    Lifting Systems

Unilift SystemsLifting Systems for Civil Engineering Applications

Unilift is the ideal lifting and handling system for a wide variety of precast concrete products, particularly in civil engineering applications. These clutches are typically used for lifting panels, pipes, pits, manholes, box culverts, road barriers, bridge beams, planks, sound walls, culverts etc.

Unilift Locking KlawThese strong, safe, lightweight clutches suit all spherical head lifting anchors. They protect against dangerous disconnection where there is a risk of fouling which is a common problem when lowering precast drainage products in confined spaces like trenches.

Cone AnchorsThis classic spherical-headed, forged foot anchors are the first choice for most applications. They are manufactured from hot-dip galvanised, forged, high impact strength construction steel. Genuine Unilift anchors are stamped with a ‘U’ on the head, as well as load class and length.

Reo (eye) AnchorsThese anchors are used with a hanger bar, also

known as a tension bar, where the concrete is too

weak for a cone anchor. They are ideal for thin

panels and other applications where the concrete

shear cone developed by the anchor is insufficient

to provide the working load limit of the anchor

e.g. low strength concrete. The bar is threaded

through the hole in the anchor and embedded

deep in the concrete. Like the cone anchors

above, they are manufactured from hot-dipped

    galvanised, forged, high impact strength

construction steel, and are stamped with a Unilift

‘U’, the load class and length.

The cut lengths for the hanger bar given in the

table are suitable for 15MPa concrete to AS 3600

    60mm cover.

Minimum precast element dimensions and reinforcement requirementsThe recommended concrete compressive strength for lifting fcm = 30MPa.Factor of Safety for Lifting = 3.The minimum precast element dimensions and required reinforcement at fcm = 30MPa is shown in the table below. The minimum spacing s between any two LinkPro loops is 2c. Refer to Figure 2.The reinforcement should be evenly distributed in the critical zone either side of a loop over a width z = 1.5hef. Refer to Figure 3.If the design shear reinforcing of the precast element As is less than As,min shown in the tables, then additional reinforcement e.g. hairpins, stirrups or hooked bars should be added to increase the area to As,min. The ties should be evenly and closely spaced around the LinkPro loop at approximately 50mm spacing while complying with bar spacing requirements of relevant design standards.Reinforcement should be designed by the lifting design engineer, detailed on the shop drawings and placed in accordance with the approved lifting design. Where additional reinforcement is required, ensure it is not in contact with the swaged ferrule.LinkPro has been designed to be used in conjunction with reinforcement details from relevant design standards. In the tranverse installation, if any bars need to be cut to install the loop, they should be replaced by bars of the same size and lapped in accordance with the relevant design standard. For applications which fall outside the scope of the table, please contact us for design guidance.

    Ancon LinkPro

Installation Carefully place LinkPro in its correctly measured position between the reinforcement, with the swaged ferrule at the bottom and the coloured section and WLL tag left exposed at the top, and tie to the reinforcement to minimise movement during casting. When using crane hooks, we recommend lifting with D/d = 3.5.

In addition, when lifting with large LinkPro sizes (LP20 and above) we recommend lifting with Ancon Thimbles so the correct radius is on the loop to ensure safe lifting.

Do not bend LinkPro to an angle greater than 30° during any lifting, handling or storage of the precast elements prior to the final installation of the precast element.

    Threaded Inserts and Chairs

Leviat provides a wide range of threaded fixing points to be used in precast panels.

QwikFoot threaded inserts provide a safe load transfer through a forged head and thus do not require a crossbar to transfer loads.

QwikFix inserts are made from solid steel and have a cross hole. The anchorage is provided by a crossbar being fed through this hole.

Ferrules are available with metric threads from M10 to M24, and Unicoil threads UC16, in either zinc plated, hot-dip galvanised G350 steel or stainless steel grade 316.

Nailing plates are provided to safely attach the inserts to the formwork and avoid ingress of concrete. Precast Chairs are available to simplify the installation and keep the inserts in place while casting.

Applications Cast-in, threaded inserts are used for two distinct applications in precast concrete elements:

The attachment of permanent structural fixtures Metric threaded inserts with M12, M16 and M20 threads are used in combination with Grade 4.6 or 8.8 bolts.

The attachment of temporary braces and strongbacks For the erection of precast concrete elements using M20 Grade 4.6 bolts or Unicoil bolts.

For more information on the design of threaded inserts for permanent and non-permanent applications please refer to the QwikFoot and QwikFix Threaded Inserts Design Guide.

QwikForm QwikForm is an innovative, modular, feature-packed, aluminium formwork system that can save significant time and labour by simplifying casting bed set up and rationalising formwork stocks. A rigid freestanding system for use on steel casting beds, QwikForm provides significant advantages over traditional timber and steel formwork.

Available in three standard heights, extension pieces simply slide on/off the top of the unit to change panel thickness. A standard steel connection plate joins units end-to-end while maintaining perfect alignment and a standard intersection piece allows right angle corners to be made at any point along the QwikForm’s length. Reversible top and bottom profiles create either square or angled panel edges. Magnets in the base locate the unit in the desired position while the QwikMag high strength clamp attaches to the side of the unit and magnetically locks to the bed to resist pressure during the concrete pour.

Keybox Reinforcement Continuity SystemsThis system is a quick and easy method of maintaining continuity of reinforcement at construction joints in concrete. It comprises a galvanised steel casing, with a dimpled surface, which houses pre-bent bars beneath a protective cover.

The unit is nailed to formwork. After pouring the concrete and striking the formwork, the cover is removed to expose the bars. The bars are straightened using a Keybox re-bending tool, ready for lapping with other reinforcement.

The following table gives details of the Keybox standard range. Many customers require purpose made units to suit their particular application. In order to meet this requirement we will manufacture according to your specific bar arrangement. For further details please contact us.

Stainless Steel ReinforcementThe Ancon range of stainless steel reinforcing bar is the most comprehensive range available. Several grades of plain and ribbed rebar, including high proof strength material, are available.

Bars are available supplied cut to length, bent to schedule, threaded and engineered as specified, please contact our Technical Department for maximum bar lengths.

Tying wire 1.2mm in diameter is available in grade 316 stainless steel.

Ancon KSN Anchors, in conjunction with BT parallel-threaded reinforcing bars, provide continuity of reinforcement at construction joints. This system is ideal for use where re-bending of bars is keen to be avoided or the continuation bar is too long to be fitted in a continuity box.

For maximum versatility, the anchors can be installed in a number of ways e.g. a metal casing, a reusable mould or individually with a nailing plate.

The HAB Anchor Bolt can be supplied as a straight or bent bar, or as a headed anchor.

Halfen HCC Column Shoe with Halfen HAB Anchor BoltsThis system is a fast and efficient means

    of connecting precast concrete columns

to foundations. It can also be used to form

continuous columns which have been prepared

    as independent precast components.

The connection between the elements is

    immediately load-bearing eliminating the need

    for assembly braces.

HAB Anchor Bolts are set into the foundation

slab using a fitting template. Concrete columns

are supplied to site ready to assemble, with

HCC Column Shoes cast into each base. The

    elements are then mechanically connected

together and the recess is sealed with mortar

    to complete the installation.

    HALFEN Anchor Channels

Details of the Halfen products most commonly used by the precast industry are shown here. For more information, please consult Halfen technical literature which is available to download from www.ancon.com.au or alternatively contact us to discuss your project needs.

When fixing to concrete, Halfen Anchor Channels provide almost unlimited adjustment along the line of the channel and can eliminate expensive site drilling. Cast-in fixings do not generate expansive forces in the concrete and can be used at close centres and closer to edges than expansion fixings. Halfen Anchor Channels are suitable for use in cracked concrete.

Headed anchors protruding from the back of the channel provide a high performance anchorage. Nail holes aid the fixing of the channels to timber formwork and an infill prevents the ingress of concrete during casting.

Fixing to channels is by ‘T’ head bolts which are inserted into the channel and turned through 90º ready for fixing any structural element.

In precast concrete construction, Anchor Channels are ideal for use with connection plates at panel-to-panel and panel-to-column intersections. They can also be used to join steelwork to concrete panels.

Halfen channels are available in hot-dipped galvanised steel or stainless steel, depending on the level of corrosion resistance required.

    Double-ended joints

    Spring Loaded Anchors

Open Grips Barrels and WedgesOpen grips should only be used at the stressing end (live end) of the bed with a hydraulic jack incorporating power lock-off. If power lock-off is not available then spring-loaded grips should be used. The wedges are made up of two segments for use with wire and three for use with strand.

Double-ended jointsDEJ/DEJ reducers can be used to connect wire/strand together midspan. Where a reducing joint is used, the pre-stressing force should never exceed 80% of the manufacturer’s specified minimum breaking load for the smallest wire or strand being used.

Spring Loaded AnchorsSpring-loaded anchors or grips should always be used at the non-stressing end of the bed. They should also be used at the stressing end where jacks without power lock-off are being used.

CCL EquipmentCCL equipment is designed, manufactured and assembled with the same attention to detail as that used in the production of its components. An experienced team, which also provides customer support on technical issues, assembles, calibrates and certifies all equipment before despatch to the customer.

CCL AccessoriesLubricationThe correct lubrication of jack wedges is essential to prolong life and ease dismantling of the grip after stressing. Two lubrication products are available. A molybdenum-based aerosol release agent dries to form a hard coating on the wedge around ten minutes after application, while Super Dippy lubricant remains in a fluid state after being liberally applied to the components of the grip.

Cleaning A range of brushes is available for the cleaning of wedges and barrels. These are designed to fit standard drill chucks. The barrel brushes are specially tapered to effectively clean the inside body of the barrel.

CCL Pumps deliver multiple pressures to accelerate the stressing operation, while maintaining control for precise stressing when needed. State-of-the-art force control systems give accurate multiple input and allow downloading of output to Laptop or Palmtop computers for storage, analysis and printing.

SR3000 pumps are of a robust design and come complete with a protection frame as standard. The high build quality and specifications of the parts used ensure a high reliability and low maintenance life. They offer rapid, reliable two speed stressing operations up to 18mm strand.

The SRX pump is designed as a compact lightweight alternative to the SR3000 unit and is capable of delivering excellent performance on small strand diameters.

    Both types of CCL

Force ControlForce control systems are available which allow the programming of the pump to automatically deliver accurate and consistent pre-stressing force. The units also allow for the download of data from the pre-stressing operation, for recording or analysis.

Calibration UnitsDigital Calibration Units can be supplied to allow Jacks and pumps to be calibrated quickly and economically on site. They feature a clear digital readout, a rechargeable battery and mains operation.

Pump come in various sizes and voltages.

Grip Release ToolsCCL Grip release tools are precision-machined alloy products used to aid the release of wedges from barrels. The tool is inserted into the bearing end of the barrel until in contact with the wedge. A sharp hammer blow is then delivered to the tool to break the contact between the wedge and barrel without damaging either component.

Replacement PartsApproved spare parts and maintenance kits are available from CCL. In order to maintain equipment in good working order, CCL recommends the carrying of a small stock of CCL replacement parts such as jack wedges and seal spares kits. This also avoids interruption in the pre-stressing process when it becomes necessary to change a jack wedge and nose.
