Light vs. Darkness

John 8:1-20

I. Light and Darkness (8:1–20)

Moses Law

• Leviticus 20:10 (ESV) “If a man commits adultery with the wife of his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

• Deuteronomy 22:22 (ESV) “If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.

What is darkness?

• Men love darkness rather than light because their deeds are evil

• The emptiness of sin

• Pleasure in sin for a season

• Darkness of the results of sin

Emptiness of soul

• Psalm 106:15 (NKJV) And He gave them their request, But sent leanness into their soul. (Other translations-wasting disease)

II. I am the Light of the world

• Jesus is that Light

• Darkness speaks of death, ignorance, sin

• Light speaks of life, knowledge, holiness

John 3:20 (ESV)

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest

his works should be exposed.

Ephesians 2:1–3 (ESV)

1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world,

following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature

children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

Ephesians 4:17–19 (ESV)

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.

18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in

them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy

to practice every kind of impurity.

Ephesians 5:8 (ESV)

for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light

Matthew 25:30 (ESV)

And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping

and gnashing of teeth.’

You can show the peace of God that passes all understanding

Philippians 4:4–9 (ESV)

4 Rejoice in the Lord always… 5 Let your reasonableness be known to everyone.

The Lord is at hand; 6 do not be anxious about anything,

but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in

Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:4–9 (ESV)

8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,

whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen

in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

The Jews,instead of submitting to Christ, argued with Him in the temple!

III. You are the Light of the World

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Matthew 5:14–16 (ESV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a

lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same

way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your

Father who is in heaven.

When God calls us to do something, He always enables

us to complete it.

Philippians 2:12–13 (ESV)

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, … work out your own

salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to

work for his good pleasure.

IV. How are you the light of the world?

John 13:34–35 (ESV)

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved

you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my

disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Are you the light of the World?

• Is Jesus the Light of your world?

• Time to choose - Light or Darkness

• You can live in darkness or in light forever
