Meet Bryan Hapke, I started

photography when I was about 8 years old and got a Kodak camera as a present. It shot 620 film (like 120 but with slightly different spools). I remember being excited when I took a photo of my dog and could recognize him in the print.

I did little photography till 1971 when I was overseas with the Navy Reserve in Scotland. I bought a cheap 35mm camera and was disappointed by the quality of the lenses. I later upgraded to a Yashica Mat 124G twin lens reflex, which took much better, clearer photos.

After the Navy I returned to college and started learning photography by reading books and magazines. I

bougt a Minolta SRT-101. I rented darkroom space at a lab in Stillwater and learned to develop and print my own film. Eventually I learned to buy bulk film and spool my own, and to compound my own developers to save money.

After college I kept doing my own darkroom work in my bathroom for several years. I acquired a Speed Graphic 4x5 camera and a Polariod back, and discovered Polariod Type 55P/N, which produced an instand photo and also a very high quality conventional negative you could enlarge later. I continued this until my circumstances changed and I could no longer find a place for the work.

I basically dropped photography for several years until digital cameras became practical. By then I was working at the Norman Water Treatment Plant, and the first digital camera I bought was for the City. It was an Olympus with a 1.3 megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom lens. Picture quality was pretty good up to about 5x7 prints.

Later I bought my own camera (a Sony point-and-shoot 5 megapixel) and started editing and printing my work. It's been that way ever since, with several camera upgrades, new lenses, flashes, etc.

Bryan Hapke will be presenting a program on Lightroom covering presets and how to stack presets, camera calibration as a way to start editing, and calibration, where to use it and how it differs from the HSL panel.

For the presentation please mute your microphone and use the chat to ask questions. If multiple people talk at the same time the audio will be distorted and not understandable. I will take breaks occasionally to answer questions from the chat, so don’t be upset if I don’t answer right away.

Bryan Hapke is the Vice President of the Metro Camera Club and as VP he

works to coordinate with individuals who bring us the monthly Programs. Here are a few words from Bryan about the current plans for Programs in these unique times.

We are trying to provide some programs for the club during this shutdown and have come up with a plan to do on-line programs until we can get back to regular meetings. We have chosen Cisco Webex as the platform for this. As of this time we have a program planned for May on “Lightroom presets calibration and color profiles” by Bryan Hapke and a program for June on “Wildlife Photography” by Don Risi.

You will receive an email invitation to the program a few hours or days before the event. The link in the invitation will want you to install the Cisco Webex software but there will be a link saying something like “can’t install software, use browser instead”. That link will let you view the presentation in your (modern) web browser. Based on using the software for a board meeting, we believe the experience will be better in the Webex software but it’s your choice.

Metro Camera Club meetings have been a big part of my life for the last few years. Not being able to get together, see everyone and participate in club activities has left an empty spot. I imagine you feel the same way. We still don’t know when meetings will resume. The outlook for the future looks better and better as time goes by. Good News: Will Rogers Garden Center of Oklahoma City has been kind enough to offer refunds for some cancelled meetings. We’ll know exactly how this will work soon. Vice President Bryan Hapke worked very hard to find a way for the board to meet on line. We met recently using the application "Cisco Webex," which is similar to Zoom. The technology worked very well and we had a successful meeting. We are now discussing the possibility of a general meeting using Webex. More on this later. Thank you very much Bryan. By the time you see this, our PDI competition will have occurred. We cannot meet in person, but thanks to John Williams and Jack DeLisle PDI judging was done remotely at home on computer. Results will be posted on our website. Thank you very much John and Jack. I hope to see you all in a regular meeting this summer. John Bowman, President

Online Workshops in May In May I'll be teaching two online workshops. The first will be a "virtual photo workshop", helping photographers improve their knowledge and creativity in photography. The other will focus on Photoshop specifically for photographers who are using Lightroom Classic as the foundation of their workflow. You can save by signing up for the bundle of both online workshops with the link below. If you're only interested in one of the two online workshops, at the bottom of the page you'll find links to the individual workshops. Today's Question A while back it became popular to create a "tilt-shift" effect for photos. Is there a way to create this type of effect in Lightroom Classic?.

Tim's Quick Answer: Yes! You can create a tilt-shift blur effect by using two (or more) Gradient Filter adjustments, using a negative value for the Sharpness slider for the Graduated Filter.

More Detail: A tilt-shift lens enables you to effectively tilt the angle at which the area of depth of field falls across an image. Among other things, this enables you to position a blur across a central area of a photo, with the top and bottom edges being out of focus. This creates a type of miniaturization effect, which can produce a unique impact in a photo where the scene almost looks like a toy model rather than an actual scene. The effect became popular as a post-processing effect, in part because a tilt-shift blur filter was added to Photoshop some time ago. It is possible, however, to create this type of effect in Lightroom Classic as well. The key is to use two (or more) Gradient Filter adjustments. Start by selecting the Gradient Filter adjustment from the toolbar below the Histogram on the right panel in the Develop module. Then drag downward from near the top of the image toward the bottom, holding the Shift key on the keyboard to make the gradient perfectly vertical. Release the mouse button to create the gradient, and then reduce the value for the Sharpness slider to the desired effect. In general I find reducing to the minimum value of -100 works well. Repeat this process for the bottom of the image, dragging from near the bottom upward, again holding the Shift key for a vertical gradient. Reduce the Sharpness setting for this edit as well. You can click on the applicable edit pin (grey circle) on the image to select one or the other adjustment. The gradients can be moved by dragging that edit pin, and you can adjust the distance of the gradient by dragging the top or bottom line associated with the center line for the edit pin. If the effect is not strong enough, you can drag on the image again to draw another gradient on top of one of the existing gradients, so that you could increase the strength of the blur with an additional application of a negative value for Sharpness.
