Folding

Caution: Keep fingers freeof folding mechanism.

1. Before folding, front wheels of chai r should be in a forward facing posi ti on. Fig. 7

Fitting GuideCorrect seating and posi ti oning encourages good posture, which in turn aids ci rculati on, breathing and digesti on.

Please take the time to properly adjust the chai r to fi t the user. If the user i s not correctly posi ti oned, check the accessori es secti on of thi s manual to see i f one or moreof our accessori es would help to faci li tate posture or consult a physi cal therapi st.

Improper seating can cause problems. Please consult a physi cal therapi st or doctor foraddi ti onal guidance.

When properly fi tted, Convaid chai rs wi ll provide years of comfortable use. As the usergrows, refer back to thi s Fi tti ng Guide to adjust the dimensions of the chai r.

Back Height The back height vari es according to chai r si ze. Headrestextensions are avai lable when extra height i s needed tosupport the head.

To determine the back height, measure from the seat to theupper part of the head. Fig. 19

Seat back height

Proper seat width enables the user to si t comfortably andprevents problems from developing. Whi le user i s seated ona flat surface, measure from hip to hip. Fig. 20

The user should have enough room to prevent hips andthighs from rubbing against the frame. However, the chai rshould not be too wide or the user wi ll sli de around andposture could be affected.

Seat Depth

Measure from the most posteri or porti on of the buttocksto the back of the knee. Subtract from that measurement1-2” to allow adequate clearance between the seat andthe back of the knee. Fig. 22

Seat Depth Adjustment

1. Push the gray detent buttons on the legrest extensions; swing them upward unti l parallel wi th the ground.Fig. 23a

2. Peel off seat upholstery from the mesh seat support. Fig. 23b

3. Remove bolt wi th a 5/32” allen wrench. Fig. 23c

4. Extend the footplate tube by matching i t wi th the holes on the seat base. Fig. 23d

5. Tighten back the bolt. Fig. 23e

6. Repeat on opposi te side.

Depth Adjustable Crotch Strap

The depth adjustable crotch strap prevents the userfrom sli ding out of the chai r. It i s connected wi ththe gray qui ck-release buckle. It can be adjusted bythreading the strap through desi red slot on the seatupholstery.

To Buckle:

Slip the metal clasp on the belt strap into the crotchstrap buckle. Fig. 24

To Release:

Press the gray button on the buckle and pull out theclasp.

Two-Piece Seat

The seat upholstery i s attached tothe mesh seat support wi th Velcro.The mesh support i s attached tothe seat frame wi th Velcro andVelcro straps. The mesh can beti ghtened or loosened from theside or rear to gi ve the seat asupporti ve contour.

H-harness shoulder strapshelp the user retainupri ght trunk posi ti on. Toadjust, i nsert the bolts onthe end of the strapthrough the grommet holeson the back upholstery, andsecure wi th the threadedknob. Choose an area inthe back upholstery thatwi ll keep the user secure,but not so ti ght that thestraps rub against the faceor neck. The area should belevel wi th or hi gher thanthe top of the shoulders.Fig. 27 & 28

H-Harness with Padded Covers

To contour the Lower Back:

1. Peel off seat upholstery. Fig. 29a

2. Contour or ti ghten the mesh support by adjusting the Velcro flap in the rear and the three Velcro straps underneath. Fig. 29b, 29c

3. Reattach seat upholstery to mesh support.

Footplate Adjustment

All Convaid footplates are height adjustable.

To determine the correct seat-to-footplateheight, measure from the back of the knee tothe bottom of the heel. Fig. 30a

Height Adjustment:The soles of the feet or heelsshould rest comfortably on topof the footplates. To achievethi s, remove detent pins onthe front of the leg tubes, sli dethe footplate to the desi redheight and reinsert the pins.When the footplate i s adjustedin i ts hi ghest posi ti on, theexcess materi al of the calf flapmay be wrapped under thefootplate and attached wi thVelcro. Angle Adjustment:To achieve comfortable footplacement, the footplate anglemay be adjusted.

Loosen the #1 bolt on eachside, and adjust to desi redposi ti on. Fig. 31

Depth Adjustment:To adjust the depth of the footplate,loosen the #2 & #3 bolts on eachside of the footplate. Sli de the foot-plate to the desi red depth, andti ghten the bolts. Fig. 32

The foot posi ti oners can also be converted to anankle strap. To convert i nto an ankle strap,remove left buckle and secure the loose end ofthe strap. Wrap the ri ght strap around theankle and fasten the buckle.

The lateral Thoraci c supports help maintain midline posi ti oning of the trunk. Toadjust the lateral Thoraci c supports:

1. Release the double sided Velcro support straps on the back of the chai r to allow for verti cal hei ght adjustment of the lateral trunk support. Fig. 36

2. Loosen the knobs on the lateral mounting bracket to adjust the lateral supports verti cally and hori zontally. Fig. 36a

3. Reposi ti on laterals to the desi red locati on. If the Thoraci c supports have to be opened wider to accommodate the user’s chest width, a new opening must be created in upholstery. Remove the back upholstery, and wi th a razor blade, sli t open the second upholstery slot. Reinstall the back upholstery onto the frame. Fig. 36b

4. Tighten the knobs and reposi ti on the double sided Velcro support straps on the backof the chai r. Fig. 36c

Note: Convaid’s chairs provide a semi-contour fit around the body. The user mustbe fitted correctly into the chair to achieve optimal posture and comfort.

Medial Thigh Support (Abductor)

Separates thi ghs to improve hip ali gn-ment and stabi li ze si tti ng posture.Degree of abducti on can be vari ed andcan favor one side.

1. Wrap the abductor flaps over the user’s thi ghs from inside to outside.

2. Wrap straps under and around the side frame, attach to buckle and adjust. Fig. 39

Pulls thi ghs together to improve hipali gnment and stabi li ze si tti ng posture.Degree of adducti on can be vari ed.

1. Cross the adductor flaps over the user’s thi ghs.

2. Wrap straps under and around the seat tube and attach wi th the buckle under seat. Fig. 40

Fold or Swing-Away Lateral Supports

To fold or swing-out the lateral trunk supports, squeeze the latch located at thebottom of Lateral Support Bar, and fold the pad inwards or outwards. Fig. 37& 38. Make sure the lateral trunk supports are folded when you fold the chai r.

The calf panel provides support for the lower legs. To attach,wrap the calf panel around legrest extensions and Velcro tothe back of the panel. Make sure i t velcros to the calf panelsupport (seat upholstery leg extension) Fig. 41, 41a & 41b

The adjustable support vest keeps the usersecurely i n place, maintains midline seatingposi ti on, and prevents forward slumping.

The vest attaches wi th Velcro straps around theback of the chai r. To attach, i nsert the shoulderstraps through the back upholstery grommetholes, and secure wi th the threaded knob. To keepthe vest from sli ding up, feed the side straps ofthe three point posi ti oning belt through the vestloops.

Adjust the side straps on the vest for proper fi taround the user’s trunk. Fig. 42

Padded Headwing The padded headwing provides fi rm support for midline posi ti oning. Fig. 43The headwing can be attached at any height by wrapping the Velcro strapsaround the back of the frame or headrest extension. Fig. 44

If the Occi Headwing i s mounted to the headrest extension, wrap the strapsaround the headrest extension and secure by lacing the threads through thegrommet holes.

The height adjustable fli p-up armrests provide added support and posi ti oning.Armrests “fli p-up” out of the way for easy access i nto the chai r, and adjust i n heightfor added comfort.

To attach or adjust the height of the armrests, remove the two screws from each brack-et, adjust bracket to the desi red height, and reinsert the screws. Fig. 53 & 54

The side panels are desi gned to keep the occupant’s arms inside the chai r and toprovide added securi ty. The side panels are attached to the chai r wi th 1 screw at thetop and 2 Velcro straps at the bottom.

The side panels wi ll adjust to accommodate varying degrees of recli ne. To adjust,loosen the Velcro strap on the front/outside of the panel, recli ne the chai r to desi redposi ti on and re-ti ghten the Velcro strap. Fig. 54a

Fitting The fi tti ng of the cushion should be done by an experi enced cli ni ci an. Whenfi tted correctly, the cushion wi ll help provide stable support and promote goodposture. Consult the cli ni ci an for questi ons regarding indi vidual needs.

Select the cushion si ze to match the seat width and depth of the chai r. Measurethe di stance between the buttocks and the back of the knees. Subtract 1-2” toallow for adequate clearance between the seat and the back of the knees.

1. Apply wheel locks. Never leave occupied chai r unattended.

2. Wi th the materi al i denti fi cati on tag towards the rear of the chai r, place the cushion onto the seat upholstery. Line up the Velcro straps to secure the cushion in place. Front end of cushion should li ne up wi th the front edge of the seat upholstery. Posi ti on the hips of the occupant to the back of the seat. The i schi als (seat bones) should be centered on the seat well of the cushion. Use posi ti oning belt to buckle occupant i nto the chai r.

3. Adjust the wheelchai r footrest hei ght so that the user’s legs rest fi rmly but comfortably on the cushion. Proper footrest adjustment wi llenhance si tti ng comfort and help lower peak si tti ng pressures. If appli cable, readjust armrest hei ght and lateral trunk supports.

Caution The height and weight of the occupant, i n conjuncti on wi th a seat cushionmay affect the center of gravi ty and cause the wheelchai r to become unstable,potenti ally resulting in i njury. Pri or to use, assess the stabi li ty of the wheel-chai r by si tti ng in i t wi th the cushion attached.

Ensure the cushion’s Velcro i s i n good condi ti on and i s ali gned properly wi ththe Velcro on the wheelchai r seat. Make sure the cushion i s fi rmly attached. Animproperly attached cushion may cause sli ding, potenti ally resulting ininjury.

Changes in the user’s condi ti on or growth, weight or changes in wheelchai requipment or accessori es may requi re reassessment by a cli ni ci an to ensureproper cushion fi t and sui tabi li ty. Skin should be constantly checked by theuser’s caregi ver for any si gns of reddened areas or skin sensi ti vi ty. Theseareas should be brought to the attenti on of a cli ni ci an. The cli ni ci an shouldalso assi st the fami ly wi th assessing the cushion for any possible areas thathave bottomed out.

2. Use only a tested, proven and compatible 4-point wheelchai r ti e-down system, and a 3-point occupant restraint system in accordance wi th SAE J2249.

3. The wheelchai r ti e-downs must be securelyattached to the four red anchor points on the chai r. See arrows in above photo for anchor points.

4. The occupant restraints must i nclude a lap and shoulder belt, secured di rectly to the Rodeo frame and side or roof of the vehi cle.

1. Waste Disposal

The shipping carton should be kept for possible return to the manufacturer/servi ce faci l-i ty for repai r or maintenance. Other paper packaging waste should be set aside forrecycling. For di sposi ti on of replaced parts or the complete chai r, the materi als shouldbe separated into: plasti c, rubber, steel, aluminum, etc., and set aside for recycling.

2. Intended Use

Thi s product i s i ntended for use by a person wi th physi cal di sabi li ti es who i s frequent-ly or permanently non-ambulatory. The chai r i s always under the control and supervi -si on of an attendant, and the occupant should never be left unattended.

3. Suitable EnvironmentThe chai r i s i ntended for both indoor and outdoor use. If the chai r i s used in the rain,the excess water should be wiped off wi th a soft cloth. If the chai r i s splashed wi th mudor corrosi ve substances li ke salt water or road salt, the chai r should be washed cleanwi th water, wiped dry and a hypoallergenic and biodegradable lubri cant reappli ed tothe moving parts. The chai r should never go into seawater, as i t wi ll corrode areas thatcannot be washed clean. When going from outside to i nside, clean any excess di rt ormud from the wheels to prevent soi li ng of i nside envi ronment.

4. Safety Instructions• Follow folding/unfolding instructi ons.

• Never leave occupied chai r unattended.

• Do not attempt to take occupied chai r up or down stai rs, escalators,

steep incli nes, or icy or sli ppery surfaces.

• To avoid ti pping, do not overload the chai r, or hang heavy i tems on the handles.

• Be aware of newly created sharp edges.

• Frequently i nspect the adjustments on the frame and the posi ti oning accessori es.

• Do not use chai r after occupant has outgrown i t.

• Do not i gnore minor malfuncti ons and maintain the chai r i n good operating

condi ti on. Moni tor the wheel locks (brakes) regularly and adjust as needed.

• When going up a curb or step, face the chai r forward and ti lt back to li ft the front wheels over the curb. Move forward and li ft the rear wheels over the curb.

• If and whenever possible and feasible, the rider should transfer out of the chair and into an approved vehicle seat and passenger restraint system.However, i f a transfer i s not possible, use only desi gnated chai rs i n a moving vehi cle which apply to the Wheelchai r Tiedown and Occupant Restrain System (WTORS) following the requi rements of SAE J2249. Follow ti e-down harness manufacturer’s i nstructi ons carefully and refer to Convaid’s ‘Transi t Guide’ for speci fi cs.

• When going up a curb or step, face forward and ti lt the chai r back to li ft the front wheels over the curb. Move forward and li ft the rear wheels over the curb.

5. User MaintenanceThe following maintenance procedures should be conducted on a regularbasi s: Examine your Convaid product vi sually from time to time for pos-sible wear and tear. Teflon spray* should be appli ed to frame and movingparts to maintain easy folding and adjustment.

a) Tire Air Pressure: The ai r pressure in your ti res should be checked WEEKLY, since low ai r pressure may affect brake abi li ty.

b) Axles and Moving Parts: Axles and moving parts should be wiped off WEEKLY wi th a sli ghtly moi st cloth, to remove dust, di rt and mud. Sparingly apply a hi gh quali ty Teflon spray* after each cleaning. Do Not use WD-40, Si li cone sprays or other lubri cant sprays as they wi ll attract dust and di rt.

c) Repair or replace loose, worn, bent, missing or damaged parts before using the chair!

• When transferring user to or from chai r, apply wheel locks.

• Maintain control of chai r at all times whi le going up/down ramp. Avoid steep slopes, parti cularly wi th a heavy occupant. If i n doubt, do not attempt a descent unless a thi rd party i s presentto help maintain control of chai r.

• When going down a curb, approach the curb backwards. Lower the rear wheels down the curb and continue backwards,taking the weight off the front wheels sothey can be gently lowered.

6. Cleaning and disinfectionClean all areas that come in contact wi th user or caregi ver wi th adi sinfectant soluti on.

To prevent the spread of germs, di sinfectant wipes should be used on aregular basi s. Keep frame dry and apply a non-toxi c, hypoallergenic andbiodegradable lubri cant to all moving parts. After longer storage periods,and before further use, the enti re chai r needs to be servi ced, cleaned anddi sinfected. Follow the guidelines of each country and region.

Cleaning of frame:

Frame i s to be kept dry and free of di rt and should be wiped off wi th anon-toxi c, hypoallergenic and biodegradable lubri cant. Lubri cant shouldbe appli ed to moving parts as needed to maintain easy folding andadjustment.

All contact wi th salt water should be avoided. If the chai r i s used in salt-water envi ronments, corrosion may occur. In the event of salt-waterexposure, the frame should be wiped off wi th a moi st towel as soon aspossible. Water and a soft cloth are suffi ci ent; lubri cant should be reap-pli ed to all moving parts.

Cleaning of wheels and brakes:

Wheels should be kept free of di rt or mud so as to not i nterfere wi th push-ing the chai r. The brakes are to be kept free of di rt or mud, so as not tointerfere wi th locking. Wipe wheels and brakes wi th a moi st cloth as need-ed and readjust brakes i f i ndi cated.

Cleaning of fabric cover:

Seat and back upholstery can be easi ly removed, washed, ai r dri ed (aPhi lli ps head screwdri ver i s requi red) and reattached to the chai r. Usestandard detergent to wash fabri c.

Cushioned parts can also be removed from chai r, washed or wiped off wi tha moi st cloth. Before reattaching them to the chai r, make sure they are completely dry. Use standard detergent to wash fabri c.

Parts that are permanently attached may be wiped vi gorously wi th amoi st cloth. Allow suffi ci ent time to dry before placing user i n chai r.

7. StorageBefore extended storage peri ods, and before reuse, the enti re chai r needs tobe servi ced, cleaned and di sinfected.

8. ReuseYour Convaid chai r should undergo a wipe-down di sinfecti on before reuse.Please use a non-toxi c, bi odegradable di sinfectant soluti on sui table forsurface di sinfecti on.

12. Functional Tests All four wheels should make contact wi th the floor. Wi th the chai r empty,push i t forward on a smooth level surface wi th enough momentum to trav-el si x feet (2 m). The chai r should not veer to the left or ri ght more thansix i nches (15 cm). Wheels should be free running and the wheel locks(brakes) adjusted to adequately secure the chai r. Following the fold/unfoldinstructi ons, the chai r should fold/unfold smoothly wi thout undue effort.All fasteners should be secure. Fasteners on moving joints should not beover ti ght. Seat fabri c should not be wide-stretched or sagging. Posi ti oningaccessori es should be correctly adjusted and secure.
