Basketball: 12 Year wait is over

Basketball is not a sport which attracts many spectators

and eyeballs in India. But a quiet revolution is undergoing

in Basketball scene in India. Recently concluded Asian

Basketball championship, recognized by FIBA is an ex-

ample of ongoing trend. Indian cagers created history

by coming 8th among 16 qualified nations from the con-

tinent. What is more heart worming is the fact that they

qualified for the Quarterfinal stage after 12 long years.

India was drawn in tough pool in first round where Iran

and Japan and Malaysia were with them. Iran was the

defending champion and has won 3 out of 5 previous

editions. Nippon squad was no way inferior. In fact both

of them reached up to the SF of this edition. So, in a

sense, Indians were hoping to defeat Malaysia in the

Group 1 stage to advance to the next round. They

achieved the feat by trouncing them by about 30 points.

Team India crossed the barrier of 100 points in this

match for the only time in this edition. They lost, as was

expected, against the other two greats but gave them a

tough fight before bowing out.

In the second round they were clubbed with Philippines,

Philistine and Hong kong. In their first match against

Philistine, they were trailing up to 3rd quarter. Team didn’t

give up and in the final quarter played like a wounded

tiger. They snatched victory with a slender margin of 70-

73 in the end. This victory proved to be an advantage in

the end as it helped them in qualifying for the QF where

despite of having equal points to Philistine in the Group,

they progressed to the next round. In next match, HK gave

them a tough time but team managed to win by 5 points.

Against Philippines, they bowed down too cheaply.

In the QF, Men in Blues played against the eventual cham-

pion and host nation China. Some were hoping for a mir-

acle again. In the previous edition, Indians have stunned

CHN. This time, they could not produce any fight and hu-

miliated by a margin of 104-58. They were succumbed to

5-8th place matches.

In first classification game, they lost ground to Korea by

a heavy margin. In 7/8th place game, Indian cagers could-

n’t produce anything and lost to Middle East nation Qatar.

Indian played loosely in last two games which cost them

respect, if not podium, in the final standings.

Punjab lad Amjyot Singh was the pick of the tournament.

Cager from the land of Punjab has been consistent since

his arrival and in the team. He finished as the top Indian

scorer. He sparked the stadium with many 3 pointers and

control over the ball. At one point of time, he was the

leading scorer of the tournament per game! Captain

Vishesh Bhriguvanshi played as per the expectation. Am-

ritpal Singh, another lad from land of five rivers earned

a lot of kudos.

In the end, young China stunned experienced old age

squad of Philipines on 3rd October in front of noisy home

supporters. Iran rescued some pride by finishing 3rd, after

defeating Japan.

Some foreign experience to basketball players and spe-

cially to coach Sat Prakash Yadav can yield rich divi-

dends. USA’s NBA is gaining and searching ground in

India. At present, two of the brightest stars of court, Am-

ritpal and Amjyot have foreign experience. Both of them

Sarbananda Sonowal said the Centre had

been trying its best to enhance the perform-

ance of Indian players in the Rio Olympics

in 2016.

"With a view to giving a boost to the prepa-

rations of Indian athletes for Rio Olympics,

2016, the ministry of sorts and youth affairs

has revised various financial parameters

under the scheme of financial assistance to

national sports federations," Sonowal told

in Guwahati.

He said according to the revised norms, the

amount earmarked for holding national

championships has been revised from Rs 2

lakh for seniors, juniors and sub-juniors to

Rs 5 lakh for seniors, Rs 7 lakh for juniors

and Rs 10 lakh for sub-juniors.

"This will help attract more young sporting

talents. In order to promote traditional tour-

naments, a new provision of financial as-

sistance of up to Rs 5 lakh each for such

events has been made. Such tournaments

will be identified by a committee of ex-

perts. Assistance of Rs 25 lakh will be

available for holding prestigious tourna-

ments in India. This will help improve the

quality of tournaments," Sonowal added.

The sports ministry has also provided bet-

ter travel facilities for coaches and players.

"It has been decided that senior players and

coaches will be allowed to travel by air in

economy class for a distance beyond 5,00

km. Similarly, junior players will be al-

lowed to travel by air in economy class for

a distance beyond 1,200 km. Sub-junior

players will be allowed to travel by AC-III

tier. This will make participation by ath-

letes less stressful and more convenient,"

the minister added.

"Medical insurance policy of Rs 5 lakh and

personal accident policy of Rs 25 lakh for

athletes has been granted. The salary of

coaches and supporting staff has also been

hiked," he added.

Empowering Female Sports Coaching

Women historically have never been given required sig-

nificance vis-a-vis man in the whole world, be it in the

field of politics, economy, education or sports not to men-

tion sports coaching. History is full with stories of sup-

pression, humiliation and exploitation of the women

across the world. Fewer women coach today, while the

majority of women's sports teams or players in India are

coached by men, only few men's and women's team

coached by women. Gender stereotypes are hard to shake

off. Some male athletes are afraid of losing to women.

From childhood, numerous female athletes have been told

that girls are supposed to play with dolls, not football,

hockey or in any sport considered unfeminine. A women's

journey from womb to womanhood is the jolting in

Haryana when compared to female children in other In-

dian states. Haryana notorious for female feticide, the

worst to sex ratio (879 women every 1000 men according

to the 2011 census) and crime against eve's. In Haryana,

women performance in sports has increased drastically

in the last decade.

Geeta Phogat of Haryana, India's first woman wrestler to qual-

ify for the Olympics in 2012. The Haryana girls who have ex-

tremely excelled in sports brought worthy name and fame and

at the same time are supporting their family financially. In

coaching Sunil Dabas of Haryana first ever Kabaddi coach to

get both Dronacharya Award and Padam Shri. Since 2005 she

has been rigorously scientific training Indian national women's

Kabaddi team for global events. Her sincere coaching efforts

reaped fruits in the form of 7 gold medals for the country.

Coaching has an important impact upon the sports perform-

ance , and it about improving performance at all stages. Sunil

Dabas of Haryana is only woman Kabaddi coach and one of

Shri in 2014 and Dronacharya Award in 2012.

Mumbai: The Royal Western Indian Turf Club (RWITC)

announced the upcoming 36th Asian Racing Conference

(ARC), to be held in

India at Mumbai, from

24th to 29th January,

2016. The conference,

organized by the Asian

Racing Federation, will

host leading turf repre-

sentatives and racing en-

thusiasts from around

the world and will be

held at the historic Ma-

halaxmi Racecourse -

home of the Indian Clas-

sics.

Asian Racing Federation

(ARF) - the peak re-

gional body for thor-

oughbred racing in Asia,

Australasia, Saudi Ara-

bia and South Africa, organizes the ARC with a vision to

provide a common international platform for racing ad-

ministrators, turf representatives and other industry play-

ers, where they can exchange ideas, network and share

experiences, and be updated about leading trends in the

industry. This initiative was conceived with the idea to

promote thoroughbred racing internationally and further

promote the sport.

The conference will start with the race day at the historic

Mahalaxmi Racecourse, while the committee meetings

and business sessions will be held in the prestigious
