My initial objective with this series was to draw on the disappearance of print as a basis for a

large collage. The strong horizontal elements suggest naturaly occuring forms.

The composition relies on a subtle tension between the deconstructed print and the white

horizontal elements.

I used inexpensive four-color newsprint from a variety of sources, in combination with oils ,

acrylics, and pencil .

As the materials were broken down and reapplied, the text and imagery in the newsprint

became disassociated, reducing into pure form, texture and color. As this process continued, the

implications of the piece seemed to expand.

The use of stark white horizontal bars in this work i l lustrates the conflict between depth and

surface, between continuity and dismemberment . It is peaceful , yet disconnected.

In the color series I am interested in the relationship between language and color, especially

the way in which these systems compliment and contradict each other.

The deconstructed materials speak to themes l ike loss, recovery, adaptation, and resurrection.

The materials are fairly common, including posters, packaging, and newsprint .

The modified and truncated words i l lustrate how easily language is corrupted, and the fragile

nature of memory.
