THE LINGUISTIC LAB IS A VALUABLE TOOL FOR

DEVELOPING LISTENING AND SPEAKING SKILLS IN

OUR STUDENTS

Objectives

• To train students on how to use headsets and microphones in order to improve self study.

• To help students focus on developing oral proficiency in the foreign language, and also to create stimulating classroom activities.

• To develop appropriate communication styles for a variety of situations. They should be able to detect opinions, attitudes, intentions of the speakers and moods in spoken and written English.

LAB USE AND POLICYGeneral Rules

The Linguistic Lab should be used with consideration for the needs of others and in ways that maintain a comfortable and functional work environment.

To that effect, users are requested:

1. Not to use the room unless specifically authorized to do so for a lab-related project directed by a Linguistics department member.

2. To share resources whenever possible.3. To refrain from eating and drinking in the

lab and to keep it clean.4. To refrain from modifying the computer

systems configurations and workstation appearance.

5. To ensure that the needs of the greatest number of users are met.

What to teach in the English Lab

• Phonetics/Phonology • Discourse Analysis • Visual Semiotics • Sociolinguistic Variation • Classroom Discourse • Idioms• Songs / Karaoke

What to teach in the English Lab

• Aspects of Language: semiotical, situational, contextual, pragmatical, cognitive, sociolinguistical, cultural.

• Types of Language: local, formal, informal, popular, usual, solemn, familiar (sayings and proverbs), related to press and television, poetical, humorous, etc.

Workshop

1. Making a list of resources we have in the English Lab by classifying them according to level and content.

- Audio- Video- Visual Aids

2. Choosing the material we’d like to use.3. Appointing a teacher in charge of keeping records of the

material being borrowed.5. Writing an overview about the functions to develop.
