THE TECHNICAL CORNER JULIAN CAY - Network Cabelling

We have different Categories of Network Cables, but we will focus on 3:Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat7 cables.

Usually the category is printed on the cable and this affects the speed of your entire network. Cat5e: 10 / 100/ 1000MBpsCat5e cable was brought into effect to better Cat5 in the speed department and to lessen interference in the cable itself. This cable is a faster, more reliable cable than Cat5. A Cat5e cable offers performance of up to 100MHz. Cat6: 1Gbps / 10GbpsCat6 cabling has even less interference within the cable itself and the speeds are steadily better. This is now the new standard in network cabling. Cat6 transmission is rated @ 10Gbps and performance of up to 250MHz.

Cat7: 1Gbps / 10GbpsCat7 features even more strict specifications for crosstalk and system noise than Cat6. Shielding has been added for individual wire pairs on the Cat7 cable. Transmission is rated @ up to 40Gbps over 50m cable which offers performance of up to 600MHz.

There is an industry standard of how these cables should be connected. Yet, often installers are not wiring their Cat cables consistently, by using different colour sequences in the middle. Yet the beginning and end remain the same colour. This means that this connection will pass a cable tester as it checks for communication on each pin. The problem arises when you are required to take over an existing network which does not have the industry standard of cabling in place (568B or 568A).

If you can keep to the industry standard, it will ultimately make things much easier. You as an installer will not have to try and decipher, trace, or figure out someone else’s wiring combinations.
