Fellow members,

Welcome back! Golf restrictions have been lifted for the state of Pennsylvania and we’re excited to welcome you back. Please practice common courtesy as we all will have a different approach to how we ease back into our social lives I want to take a moment in this newsletter to express my gratitude to many that have gone above and beyond in this crisis. There is no guidebook on leading a Board of Governors in a pandemic. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Thanks to Frank Hamschin. His experience helped us navigate through a perfect storm of problems. We wouldn’t have made it through this crisis without his expert leadership. To Chef John.. his team and Glenn Stein and Anthony. To take an idea and make it a reality in 3 days was something I didn’t think possible. We’re lucky to have you at SHCC! To Kerie Zadrozny.. whose leadership efforts actually gave us a net increase in our membership during a PANDEMIC. The scavenger hunt was a welcome ( fun) event for many of our members looking for a much needed break from the stress in their lives. To Tony Traci.. who sets the bar for club professionals in Western Pa. His calm and focused leadership has given us direction on moving forward with golf. You have proved yourself again and again. Thank you! To Bryan Flaherty. Who managed, with a skeleton crew, to maintain this course as massive amounts of changes were being made. His pride in his work and the results will be on full display for all to see this year. To the rest of my fellow Board Members. We don’t always agree on the specifics on what’s best for this club and our Members. We do, however, understand that there are nine of us. We debate, we vote, and then we ACT and speak as one voice. I’ve never been more proud of this group. I’m humbled to be among you.

Lastly, a few pieces of good news to share.

1. Our golf project renovations (Aspen) came in $26,000 under budget. 2. Our new range netting project came in well under budget.

Also.. We have raised over $50,000 for our employees with the South Hills stimulus project. This amount of generosity has brought tears to the eyes of many of our staff. I’m constantly amazed by the Members of this Club. Well done!! The Club has been sanitized and will sparkle as we welcome you back. Thank you to all that have has the patience to stay with us as Members as we navigate this crisis together.

Best

Even though the Club has been closed, there has been quite a bit happening both on the golf course and inside the clubhouse. We have completed construction of a new walk-in cooler, installed five new pieces of kitchen equipment, and began work to remodel the Junior Locker

Room. Recently, we are working to finalize plans for the new Pool Sun Deck floor, purchase several pieces of new pool furniture and replace the roof over the Dining Room, President’s Room and Kitchen. For the past several weeks, our staff has been reading, researching and benchmarking bets practices for social distancing and facility sanitization. We have received great advice from the PGA, Golf Course Superintendents Association, Club Manager’s Association and the CDC. All Members will see several noticeable physical changes in dining areas and service procedures when we receive clearance to reopen the clubhouse. As you have probably noticed, things are changing on a moment’s notice. I am proud of our staff’s responsiveness and confident we will continue our efforts to be ahead of the curve during these challenging circumstances. All of this is new for everyone so if you have good ideas or see a better way of doing things, please let us know. Later this month, Glenn Stein, Director of Food & Beverage will officially move to his new role in Golf operations. While we are happy for Glenn and know he is looking forward to his new responsibilities, there will be many Members and clubhouse staff who will miss his tireless work ethic, willingness to lend a hand, and positively hilarious sense of humor. Glenn has always been a team player who worked as long and hard as necessary to get the job done. Please join me in thanking Glenn for his outstanding service and wishing much happiness with his new position. We are one day closer to reopening and WE ARE READY! Thank you. Frank S. Hamschin, General Manager

Dear Members, The Board of Governors is pleased to announce that we have received funds from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). PPP was announced on March 31, 2020 by the U.S. Treasury and the Small Business Administration. The Board called a special meeting on April 2, 2020 to discuss the nature of the program and the possibility for SHCC to be a recipient of these funds. The Board consulted with our lender to determine SHCC’s eligibility. Our lender felt confident that under the provisions of the SBA that we would qualify for the loan. The Board unanimously approved moving forward with the application. On April 3rd, the program launched and the Club completed an application to formalize SHCC’s eligibility. The Club was notified on April 16th that we were approved for the loan and we received a deposit into our account of $602,000 on April 17th which represents our payroll and qualifying expenses for the specified period of time defined in the terms of the program. The provisions of the Paycheck Protection Program require that the money be spent for qualifying payroll and expenses. Funds spent for these purposes will be forgiven and not subject to payback. Any funds that are unused or that do not qualify under the guidelines of the program will be converted to a 1% loan. Those funds have been segregated into an account and none of those dollars have been spent to date. The SHCC Bylaws require a vote to accept this loan. The Board of Govenors will be delivering additional information along with a ballot to our equity Members in the coming days. In addition, the BOG will host a Zoom videoconference to answer your questions. This is certainly exciting news and something that we are pleased to present for your consideration. Sincerely, Christopher, S. Blass, President Frank S. Hamschin, General Manager

The first thing we would like to do is thank each and every one of our Members for their steadfast support and positive attitudes during this strange and challenging time. Everyone has been supportive of the Club, their fellow Members and our staff. We have not had any resignations due to the current situation, but instead, we have had many of our current Members recruiting new Members! We actually have enrolled four new Member Families while our Club was closed. Many of our Members have contributed to the Employee Assistance Fund which benefits our hourly employees who are facing challenges, as so many of us are during the stay-at-home order. The generosity of our Members reminds us that we are all one community at SHCC. Our staff is anxious to return to their duties and thank everyone personally. While we have been closed, things have been happening. Our new Fireplace and Entertainment Venue is well on its way to completion and will provide an excellent outdoor area to enjoy camaraderie while staying socially distant. Our carryout service has been a big success and Glenn, Anthony, Chef John and his staff have all enjoyed helping take care of our Members and their families. Each of us is looking forward to golf this month and seeing our Members enjoy the Club and we are looking forward to getting back to “normal” in whatever new form that may take.

See you at the Club!

NEW ENTERTAINMENT VENUE WITH FIREPLACE & PATIO

By the end of May construction of this new

area will be completed. The 100 Year Anniversary

Committee selected this project to “Kick-Off” the

next hundred years. An engraved brick walkway

leads from the existing patio to the new area and

putting green. The new area will be used for

events, but more often by Members wishing to

relax in front of the fireplace, viewing the sunset

over the golf course or watching golfers finish their

round on the 18th green. The commemorative wall

with 53 engraved stones looks fantastic!

THANK YOU, to SHCC Members for your

contributions which made this project possible.

All 100th Year Anniversary Events have been postponed…until next year. Except for the “Leap into the New Year” event (which was a great party), all of the 2020 Anniversary events will take place in 2021. As the Club re-opens, the Entertainment Committee will schedule events for the remainder of this year. Rather than try to guess at what this year’s social restrictions will be, the Board of Governors chose to reschedule the Gala and other 100-year events until next year. The 1st year of our second hundred years will be a huge success…ALL SHCC Members will receive a notice to “Save the Dates”. Later this month all SHCC Members will receive the 100 Year History of South Hills Country Club Book written by Frank “Rusty” Marmion. You will enjoy pages of Club history, anecdotes, story lines, photos, memories, events and much more. Happy May Ladies! Most of us are anxiously awaiting our return to the

GOLF COURSE! What a wild and crazy ride these past couple of months

have been. “Good things come to those who wait” …right? Enough

already…we want to golf!

In the meantime, …your WGA Executive Board has been strategizing

about how best to proceed with the 2020 Golf Season at SHCC, given

the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic that is still ongoing. Here are

some agenda topics we have been working on:

WGA By-laws have been reviewed and proposed changes have been

suggested. Once we can get our general membership together, we will

take a vote to make some minor revisions to current document. Thanks

to Serena Gozion for taking the lead on this project.

Our 2020 WGA Booklet has been drafted by the VP’s (MJ Simon and

Leslie Barton). Due to the uncertainty of WHEN WE CAN ACTUALLY

GOLF, the booklet will not be printed this year. A PDF file is available

for use. This file will be available via Clubster soon.

The RED TEES have been re-handicapped. Click HERE for more

information. A huge thank you to Serena Gozion for her hours of work

spent analyzing data and assisting the Pro Shop with this project.

Western matches for 2020 have been cancelled. Contact Suzan Dunn for

more information.

Interclub matches are scheduled but, of course, we must wait to see IF

and WHEN those will happen. Contact Debby Recker for information.

Sign-ups for Birdies/Chip Ins/Ringers and all

events are ON HOLD pending re-scheduling of the

season’s events due to COVID-19.

Minutes from the WGA Executive Board meetings

are available on the SHCC website.

Hope to see you soon! Things will certainly be different this season, but

as our friend MJ Simon says, “We must be FLUID and FLEXIBLE!”

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Baloh, WGA President ‘20

I am excited to announce the completion of our bunker renovation on holes five, sixteen and seventeen. The project was completed on April 16th. With the wet weather this past month, all new sod has had an opportunity to take root and is ready for play. I am confident that the modifications made to these holes will provide new and exciting look to our already unique layout. Along with the bunker renovation, we recently had our old driving range netting replaced. The old netting was starting to deteriorate and was littered with holes allowing balls to travel through. This new netting will provide a much-needed barrier for errant range shots heading towards route 51. The grounds department will be returning to full force the last week of April. The guys are extremely excited to return to the club and get the course back into championship condition. Detail work including flower bed maintenance, sand trap edging/weeding/raking, and daily mowing of all playing surfaces will return as a part of our normal routine. Over the past month and a half, we have utilized growth regulators to limit turf growth on our fairways and greens. The result of these regulators and reduction of fertilizers make the turf show characteristics of being dormant. I can assure you that our fine turf is in great health and with a “flip of a switch” we can have everything looking nice and green again. These past couple of week I have felt like a kid waiting for summer vacation to begin. We are eagerly awaiting for the return of golf in Pennsylvania and to show off all the hard work our staff has put into the course this offseason. If anyone has questions about any of the projects completed this winter, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your support, and I can’t wait to see everyone back at the club. Golf Committee Report

We hope that everyone is well and managing through this challenging time. The grounds crew has been diligently at work preparing the course for another successful season. Tony, Brian and Jeff are back and in the process of stocking the Pro Shop for our centennial year. The Governor has given the go ahead for golf in Pennsylvania and the Golf Committee is planning on a robust golf calendar.

We conducted a virtual meeting with the event chairs for the Member/Member and Men’s Invitational in order to discuss contingency plans. The conclusion from that meeting was to reschedule the Member/Member to a later date which is TBD and to retain the dates for the Invitational. We hope and believe that we will play most all of the traditional events and that we will be able to deliver an outstanding social experience. That experience will be predicated on government directives so we appreciate your flexibility as well as your creativity as we seek to deliver on your expectations with your ideas. Please feel free to share your thoughts as we endeavor to deliver a first-class golf and social experience during the upcoming golf season.

Yours in Golf,

Steve Fischetti & Paul Baroffio

Injury Prevention Strategies While the courses are temporarily closed in Pennsylvania due to the Coronavirus, strength coordinators and golf professionals stress that incorporating injury prevention strategies are a crucial aspect of preseason conditioning. Thorough conditioning and proper swing mechanics are both essential in helping to prevent golf injuries. Many injuries occur early in the season before proper conditioning has taken place. Include the following strategies before, during and after your golf game: • Always take time to warm up and stretch before playing golf, as

cold muscles are more prone to injury. • Allow for an adequate cool-down period and perform gentle

stretches after playing golf. • Include aerobic fitness training to help prevent fatigue (and

breakdown of good technique) in the later stages of the game. • Adding regular strength training for the shoulders, chest, back, core

and forearms will help avoid a breakdown of good technique. • Improving flexibility in the muscles and joints (especially around

the shoulder and core) will reduce the stress on these areas while playing.

• Stay well hydrated by drinking water every 15 minutes even if you do not feel thirsty.
