President’s Message

Fellow members: Welcome to November! Thanks to everyone who took the time to attend the Town Hall event last month. All Membership

classes were represented and our presentation on capital projects (past and future) was, by many accounts, well received. There is much to be excited for as we move closer to our 100th year Anniversary and all of its events. Please note the calendar on the back cover of this newsletter for those specific dates. 2019 at South Hills has been a rousing success. We have added and upgraded some 79 members this year! Our financial condition has never been stronger. We will be hosting the 2020 Pittsburgh Open in July and showing off our incredible golf course. Let’s keep up this incredible momentum and make next year even better. Best Regards, Christopher S. Blass

South Hills Country Club hosted a Town Hall meeting on October 23rd where all Club Members heard a summary of key accomplishments in 2019 and a preview of proposed capital projects for 2020. The meeting also included status updates on plans for the 100th anniversary celebration and the Brick Campaign. The following are a few of the highlights from the

Town Hall meeting: • The Brick Campaign has raised more than $70,000. Funds will be

used to construct a new Patio & Entertainment Area that will replace the existing fire pits. The deadline to purchase a brick or flagstone has been extended until December 1st.

• Chris Blass, Club President, reviewed the projects that were completed using proceeds from the capital fee that was initiated in 2016, including the Practice Range and Short Game area, the Men’s Locker Room, and the Family Dining Room improvements. All projects were completed within budget.

• 2019 capital projects and purchases that were completed with funds used from Club operations include new Ballroom windows, painting, carpet and wallcovering throughout the Clubhouse, HVAC improvements, new irrigation controls and Grounds equipment purchases.

• John Innocenti, Vice President, reviewed our excellent results in Membership enrollments and retention. We had growth in our primary membership classifications and will finish the year with a net gain in total membership dues for the first time in several years.

• The Board of Governors has proposed several projects for 2020 that would be funded through the existing capital fees. These projects include continuation of Forse Plan golf course improvements on Holes 5, 16 and 17, Ladies’ Locker Room renovations, Practice Range netting along Route 51, new Pool furniture, new floor on the Pool Sun Deck, an additional walk-in cooler, a new flat roof over the Dining Room, Clubhouse windows, Clubhouse entry doors, interior and exterior security cameras, and furniture for the Dining Room.

• An additional $400,000 of capital improvements will be funded through Club operations. These projects include Grounds equipment, kitchen equipment, new roofs on the Pro Shop and Ten Stand, Ballroom light fixtures, HVAC replacements and carpet for the Sam Parks Grille.

Transferable Members will receive a ballot to vote on borrowing money that will be repaid with capital fees to fund the projects described above. Ballots must be returned by November 6th. It was exciting to see so many Members attend and actively participate in the Town Hall meeting. Your enthusiasm as support is appreciated! Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin, General Manager

Dear Fellow Members, Each year during the Holiday Season our Club expresses its gratitude to our employees for their hard work, dedication and loyalty throughout the past year with a Special Christmas Bonus. Your Board of Governors has approved a fifty-dollar ($50.00) charge to appear on your October statement and feels this is a reasonable minimum contribution and may be increased simply by contacting our Club office or by remitting your check for any amount you feel is appropriate. Your contribution to our Employee Christmas Fund benefits all employees, exclusive of management, including those who do not regularly receive tips throughout the year, including Administrative Staff, Kitchen, Grounds, Clubhouse, as well as your Waite Staff and Golf Shop. The funds are distributed based on hours worked and length of service. On behalf of myself and the entire Board of Governors, we extend to each of you a HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON! Christopher S. Blass, President SHCC Board of Directors

From the Ladies’ Tee

The Women’s Golf Association closed our 2019 Season on

Tuesday, October 8. Closing Day winning team was LINDA

MARTIN, JOYCE COYLE & DEBBY RECKER. Way to go! Golf was

followed by a lunch and fall general membership meeting. We

enjoyed a delicious fall menu by Chef John. Most Improved

Golfers were recognized: Karen Evans (Over 22 HCP) and Beth

Smith (Under 22 HCP). Beth Smith was also mentioned as being

the golfer with the most rounds played for the year (66). Well

done!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest WGA

member, Maureen Jacovino. She joined us for Closing Day lunch,

at which time she agreed to take the role of Social Chair for the

upcoming season! I know Maureen is already busy at work

keeping us informed of “all things social” on Facebook. She will

also take photos, send cards, and make notifications on Clubster

for WGA. Please join me in reaching out to Maureen with

information that needs to be shared among us. Also don’t be

afraid to introduce yourself, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure

of meeting Maureen. She’s ready to play some golf with us next

Spring!

In lieu of an end-of-season survey for the year, our group

has decided to implement a suggestion box on the counter in the

locker room. If you have ideas or feedback for me but will not be

in the locker room, please reach out to me directly via email, text

or Clubster. I certainly WELCOME your opinions and wish to

approach the new year with open ears. I love to work on new

ideas for improvement and also to celebrate the successes we

have had in the past.

Hopefully everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving

celebration this month. I hope you are all blessed with good

health, good family and good friends. Gobble gobble!

Respectfully submitted,

Amy Baloh

WGA President

October has been a very good month to the golf course in terms of weather. We have had a lot of dry days and plenty of play on the course. During the month of October, the Grounds Department has been very productive preparing the course for the cold/wet winter forecasters have predicted. The following is a list of tasks that that grounds department has successfully completed and a few that remain for our final winter preparations.

Completed Tasks: • Soil amendments – Applications of dolomitic lime, potash, magnesium

and nitrogen have been made to our greens per our soil tests results. It is imperative that our greens are as healthy as possible going into winter to reduce winter injury.

• Sand Topdressing – Multiple applications of sand topdressing have been made to our greens over the past few weeks. Topdressing helps insulate the crown of the grass plant throughout the winter months. Along with protecting the crown during the winter topdressing provides other benefits such as increased firmness, reduction of disease pressure, and stabilizes the moisture of turf/prevents moisture from getting lost to the environment.

• Venting – Our greens have been vented multiple times in the past month. Venting the greens helps promote deeper roots, reduce compaction, increase gas exchange to the rootzone and helps remove surface water during the winter months.

Tasks Ahead: • Snow Mold Applications – Winter snow mold applications will be made

to our greens, approaches, tees and fairways. These applications are made right before the onset of plant dormancy (late November/early December). Pigments are also sprayed with snow mold applications to help fend off plant desiccation. Proper applications made during this time will also help aid spring green up.

• Irrigation Winterization – Before nighttime temperatures drop below freezing our irrigation system is drained and blown out using a compressor. Along with the irrigation lines our pumphouse, drinking fountains, and pond pumps are all put through a winterization process. We will look to have all our winterization completed before thanksgiving.

• Deep-Tine - We will deep-tine our greens one final time before the onset of winter. We will leave these holes open all winter to facilitate the movement of water off the putting surfaces preventing it from freezing.

It is hard to believe winter is almost here. I am very thankful to my staff as they have made my first full season at South Hills not only fun but successful. As a manager, I am only as good as the people around me. I can say the Grounds staff we have is hands down the best I have worked with during my professional career. Thank you for the opportunity to be your Golf Course Superintendent, and I am looking forward to next golf season. Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent
