1Wireless ADSL2+ Gateway

Chapter 1:Product Overview

Thank you or choosing the Linksys Wireless ADSL2+Gateway. The Gateway lets you access the Internet via a

wireless connection or through one o its our switchedports. You can also use the Gateway to share resourcessuch as computers, printers and iles. A variety o securityeatures help to protect your data and your privacy whileonline. Security eatures include WPA2 security, a StateulPacket Inspection (SPI) irewall and NAT technology.Coniguring the Gateway is easy using the providedbrowser-based utility.

Front Panel

Power (Green) The Power LED lights up andstays on while the Gateway is powered on.

Ethernet 1-4 (Green) These numbered LEDs,corresponding with the numbered ports onthe Gateways back panel, serve two purposes.I the LED is continuously lit, the Gateway issuccessully connected to a device through thatport. It lashes to indicate network activity over

that port.Wireless (Green) The Wireless LED lights upwhen the wireless eature is enabled. It lasheswhen the Gateway is actively sending orreceiving data over the network.

DSL (Green) The DSL LED lights up wheneverthere is a successul DSL connection. The LEDlashes while the Gateway is establishing theADSL connection.

Internet (Green) The Internet LED lights upand stays on when there is a connection madethrough the Internet port. It lashes to indicate

network activity over the Internet port.

DSL The DSL port connects to the ADSL line.

Ethernet 1, 2, 3, 4 These Ethernet ports (1, 2,3, 4) connect the Gateway to wired computersand other Ethernet network devices.

Reset There are two ways to reset the Gatewaysactory deaults. Either press and hold the Resetbutton or approximately ive seconds, or restorethe deaults rom the Administration > FactoryDefaults screen o the Gateways web-basedutility.

Power The Power port is where you willconnect the power adapter.

Chapter 2:Wireless Security Checklist

Wireless networks are convenient and easy to install, sohomes with high-speed Internet access are adopting them

at a rapid pace. Because wireless networking operates bysending inormation over radio waves, it can be morevulnerable to intruders than a traditional wired network.Like signals rom your cellular or cordless phones, signalsrom your wireless network can also be intercepted. Sinceyou cannot physically prevent someone rom connectingto your wireless network, you need to take some additionalsteps to keep your network secure.

1. Change the default wirelessnetwork name or SSID

Wireless devices have a deault wireless network nameor Service Set Identiier (SSID) set by the actory. Thisis the name o your wireless network, and can be upto 32 characters in length. Linksys wireless productsuse linksys as the deault wireless network name. Youshould change the wireless network name to somethingunique to distinguish your wireless network rom otherwireless networks that may exist around you, but do notuse personal inormation (such as your Social Securitynumber) because this inormation may be available oranyone to see when browsing or wireless networks.

2. Change the default password

For wireless products such as access points, routers, andgateways, you will be asked or a password when youwant to change their settings. These devices have a deaultpassword set by the actory. The Linksys deault passwordis admin. Hackers know these deaults and may try touse them to access your wireless device and change yournetwork settings. To thwart any unauthorized changes,customize the devices password so it will be hard toguess.

3. Enable MAC address filtering

Linksys routers and gateways give you the ability toenable Media Access Control (MAC) address iltering. TheMAC address is a unique series o numbers and lettersassigned to every networking device. With MAC addressiltering enabled, wireless network access is providedsolely or wireless devices with speciic MAC addresses.For example, you can speciy the MAC address o eachcomputer in your home so that only those computers canaccess your wireless network.

4. Enable encryption

Encryption protects data transmitted over a wirelessnetwork. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) and WiredEquivalency Privacy (WEP) oer dierent levels o security

or wireless communication.A network encrypted with WPA/WPA2 is more securethan a network encrypted with WEP, because WPA/WPA2uses dynamic key encryption. To protect the inormationas it passes over the airwaves, you should enable thehighest level o encryption supported by your networkequipment.

WEP is an older encryption standard and may be theonly option available on some older devices that do notsupport WPA.

General Network Security GuidelinesWireless network security is useless i the underlyingnetwork is not secure.

Password protect all computers on the network andindividually password protect sensitive iles.

Change passwords on a regular basis.

Install anti-virus sotware and personal irewallsotware.

Disable ile sharing (peer-to-peer). Some applicationsmay open ile sharing without your consent and/or

knowledge.

Additional Security Tips

Keep wireless routers, access points, or gateways awayrom exterior walls and windows.

Turn wireless routers, access points, or gatewayso when they are not being used (at night, duringvacations).

Use strong passphrases that are at least eight charactersin length. Combine letters and numbers to avoid usingstandard words that can be ound in the dictionary.

Chapter 3:Installation

Linksys strongly recommends that you run the Setup CD-ROM. I you have problems running the Setup CD-ROM,

use this chapter.

Connection

Make sure that all the devices that you are working1.with are powered down, including your computer(s)and the Gateway. I you have a modem connectedto your network, disconnect it. The Gateway replacesyour modem.

Connect one end o the provided Ethernet cable to2.your computers Ethernet adapter. Connect the otherend o the Ethernet cable to one o the Ethernet ports

on the back o the Gateway.

Connect the Computer

Repeat step 2 or every computer or device that you3.want to connect to the Gateway via Ethernet. I youconnect more than our computers to the Gateway,you also need to connect a switch to the Gateway.

NOTE: I your computers Ethernet adapteris not set up, reer to the Ethernet adaptersdocumentation or more inormation.

Connect one end o the phone cable to the DSL port4.on the back o the Gateway.

Connect the DSL

Connect the other end o the phone cable to the wall5.jack with ADSL service or microilter.

NOTE: To avoid intererence, you may need toplace a microilter or splitter between the phone

cable and wall jack. Contact your ISP to determinei one is required. (UK residents need to connectthe microilter to the wall phone jack with ADSLservice and then connect one end o the providedphone cable to the DSL port on it.) I you havemore than one phone and you experience staticon the line ater installing the Gateway, then youneed to install an additional microilter or eachphone or ax that you use. I you use ISDN, thenyou do not need a microilter.

Connect the power adapter to the Gateways power6.port and the electrical outlet.

Connect the Power

Power on the computer that you want to use to7.conigure the Gateway.

The Power, Wireless, and at least one o the numbered8.Ethernet (1, 2, 3, or 4) LEDs should light up. I not, makesure the Gateway is powered on and the cables aresecurely connected.

Connection is complete.

Continue to the Setup section.

Setup

For setup, conigure the Gateway to access the Internetthrough your ADSL Internet Service Provider (ISP). Use thesetup inormation provided by your ISP.

Access the web-based utility as described in Chapter 4:

Advanced Coniguration, and then complete the ollowingtabs within the utility:

Setup > Basic Setup

Wireless > Basic Wireless Settings

Wireless > Wireless Security

Ater completing the setup, to test it, enterwww.linksys.com/uk/registration in the web browsersAddress ield, and press Enter.

Installation is complete.

Ater setting up the Gateway with the Setup Wizard(located on the CD-ROM), the Gateway will be ready or

use. However, i youd like to change its advanced settings,use the Gateways web-based utility. You can access theutility via a web browser on a computer connected to theGateway.

NOTE: When irst installing the Gateway, youshould use the Setup Wizard on the Setup CD-ROM. I you want to conigure advanced settings,use this chapter.

NOTE: For New Zealand, ollow these instructions

ater accessing the web-based utility in theSetup > Basic Setup screen:

Select1. RFC 2364 PPPoA rom theEncapsulation drop-down menu.

For the Virtual Circuit ID, enter2. 0 or the VPIand 100 or the VCI.

Select3. VC or Multiplexing.

Select4. Multimode rom the DSL Modulationdrop-down menu.

Enter your User Name and Password details5.rom your ISP.

Click6. Save Settings.

How to Access the Web-Based Utility

To access the web-based utility, launch the web browseron your computer, and enter the Gateways deault IPaddress, 192.168.1.1, in the Address ield. Then, pressEnter.

A login screen appears. Use the deault user name andpassword, admin, unless you have changed them duringthe Setup Wizard. (You can set a new user name andpassword rom the Administration tabs Managementscreen.) ClickOK to continue.

Gateway Login

I you are unable to log in, press the Reset button on theback panel or at least 5 seconds, then wait or the deviceto reset and try again.

Appendix A:Troubleshooting

Your computer cannot connect to the Internet.

Follow the instructions until your computer can connectto the Internet:

Make sure that the Gateway is powered on. The PowerLED should be green and not lashing.

I the Power LED is lashing, then power o all oyour network devices, including the Gateway andcomputers. Then power on each device in theollowing order:

Gateway1.

Computer2.

Check the LEDs on the ront panel o the Gateway.Make sure the Power, DSL, and at least one o thenumbered LEDs are lit. I they are not, then checkthe cable connections. The computer should beconnected to one o the ports numbered 1-4 on theGateway, and the Line port o the Gateway must beconnected to the ADSL line.

When you double-click the web browser, you are

prompted for a username and password. If you want to

get rid of the prompt, follow these instructions.

Launch the web browser and perorm the ollowing steps

(these steps are speciic to Internet Explorer but are similaror other browsers):

Select1. Tools > Internet Options.

Click the2. Connections tab.

Select3. Never dial a connection.

Click4. OK.

You are using a static IP address and cannot connect.

Reer to Windows Help and change your Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) Properties to Obtain an IP address automatically.

The computer cannot connect wirelessly to the network.

Make sure the wireless network name or SSID is thesame on both the computer and the Gateway. I youhave enabled wireless security, then make sure the samesecurity method and key are used by both the computerand the Gateway.

You need to modify the basic settings on the Gateway.

Run the Setup Wizard on the Setup CD-ROM.

You need to modify the advanced settings on the

Gateway.

Open the web browser (or example, Internet Exploreror Fireox), and enter the Gateways IP address in theaddress ield (the deault IP address is 192.168.1.1). Whenprompted, complete the User name and Password ields(the deault user name and password is admin). Click theappropriate tab to change the settings

This product is designed or use with the standard, integralor dedicated (external) antenna(s) that is/are shippedtogether with the equipment. However, some applicationsmay require the antenna(s), i removable, to be separatedrom the product and installed remotely rom the deviceby using extension cables. For these applications, Linksysoers an R-SMA extension cable (AC9SMA) and an R-TNCextension cable (AC9TNC). Both o these cables are 9meters long and have a cable loss (attenuation) o 5 dB. Tocompensate or the attenuation, Linksys also oers highergain antennas, the HGA7S (with R-SMA connector) andHGA7T (with R-TNC connector). These antennas have again o 7 dBi and may only be used with either the R-SMA

or R-TNC extension cable.

License. Subject to the terms and conditions o thisAgreement, Linksys grants the original end user purchaser

o the Linksys product containing the Sotware (You)a nonexclusive license to use the Sotware solely asembedded in or (where authorized in the applicabledocumentation) or communication with such product.This license may not be sublicensed, and is not transerableexcept to a person or entity to which you transerownership o the complete Linksys product containingthe Sotware, provided you permanently transer all rightsunder this Agreement and do not retain any ull or partialcopies o the Sotware, and the recipient agrees to theterms o this Agreement.

Sotware includes, and this Agreement will apply to (a)

the sotware o Linksys or its suppliers provided in or withthe applicable Linksys product, and (b) any upgrades,updates, bug ixes or modiied versions (Upgrades) orbackup copies o the Sotware supplied to You by Linksysor an authorized reseller, provided you already hold avalid license to the original sotware and have paid anyapplicable ee or the Upgrade.

Protection of Information. The Sotware anddocumentation contain trade secrets and/or copyrightedmaterials o Linksys or its suppliers. You will not copyor modiy the Sotware or decompile, decrypt, reverseengineer or disassemble the Sotware (except to the

extent expressly permitted by law notwithstanding thisprovision), and You will not disclose or make availablesuch trade secrets or copyrighted material in any ormto any third party. Title to and ownership o the Sotwareand documentation and any portion thereo, will remainsolely with Linksys or its suppliers.

Collection and Processing of Information. You agree thatLinksys and/or its ailiates may, rom time to time, collectand process inormation about your Linksys productand/or the Sotware and/or your use o either in order(i) to enable Linksys to oer you Upgrades; (ii) to ensurethat your Linksys product and/or the Sotware is being

used in accordance with the terms o this Agreement;(iii) to provide improvements to the way Linksys deliverstechnology to you and to other Linksys customers; (iv) toenable Linksys to comply with the terms o any agreementsit has with any third parties regarding your Linksysproduct and/or Sotware and/or (v) to enable Linksys to

comply with all applicable laws and/or regulations, or therequirements o any regulatory authority or governmentagency. Linksys and/ or its ailiates may collect andprocess this inormation provided that it does not identiyyou personally. Your use o your Linksys product and/orthe Sotware constitutes this consent by you to Linksysand/or its ailiates collection and use o such inormationand, or EEA customers, to the transer o such inormationto a location outside the EEA.

Software Upgrades etc. I the Sotware enables you toreceive Upgrades, you may elect at any time to receivethese Upgrades either automatically or manually. I youelect to receive Upgrades manually or you otherwiseelect not to receive or be notiied o any Upgrades, youmay expose your Linksys product and/or the Sotwareto serious security threats and/or some eatures withinyour Linksys product and/or Sotware may becomeinaccessible. There may be circumstances where weapply an Upgrade automatically in order to comply withchanges in legislation, legal or regulatory requirementsor as a result o requirements to comply with the termso any agreements Linksys has with any third partiesregarding your Linksys product and/or the Sotware. Youwill always be notiied o any Upgrades being deliveredto you. The terms o this license will apply to any such

Upgrade unless the Upgrade in question is accompaniedby a separate license, in which event the terms o thatlicense will apply.

Open Source Software. The GPL or other open sourcecode incorporated into the Sotware and the open sourcelicense or such source code are available or ree downloadat http://www.linksys.com/gpl. I You would like a copyo the GPL or other open source code in this Sotware on aCD, Linksys will mail to You a CD with such code or $9.99plus the cost o shipping, upon request.

Term and Termination. You may terminate this Licenseat any time by destroying all copies o the Sotware

and documentation. Your rights under this License willterminate immediately without notice rom Linksys i Youail to comply with any provision o this Agreement.

Limited Warranty. The warranty terms and periodspeciied in the applicable Linksys Product User Guideshall also apply to the Sotware.

Disclaimer o Liabilities. IN NO EVENT WILL LINKSYS ORITS SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOST DATA, REVENUEOR PROFIT, OR FOR SPECIAL, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL,INCIDENTAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, REGARDLESS OFCAUSE (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), ARISING OUT OFOR RELATED TO THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE

SOFTWARE, EVEN IF LINKSYS HAS BEEN ADVISED OFTHE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. IN NO EVENT WILLLINKSYS LIABILITY EXCEED THE AMOUNT PAID BY YOUFOR THE PRODUCT. The oregoing limitations will applyeven i any warranty or remedy under this Agreement ailso its essential purpose. Some jurisdictions do not allow

the exclusion or limitation o incidental or consequentialdamages, so the above limitation or exclusion may notapply to You.

Export. Sotware, including technical data, may be subjectto U.S. export control laws and regulations and/or exportor import regulations in other countries. You agree tocomply strictly with all such laws and regulations.

U.S. Government Users. The Sotware and documentationqualiy as commercial items as deined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101and 48 C.F.R. 12.212. All Government users acquire theSotware and documentation with only those rightsherein that apply to non-governmental customers.

General Terms. This Agreement will be governed by andconstrued in accordance with the laws o the State oCaliornia, without reerence to conlict o laws principles.The United Nations Convention on Contracts or theInternational Sale o Goods will not apply. I any portiono this Agreement is ound to be void or unenorceable,the remaining provisions will remain in ull orce andeect. This Agreement constitutes the entire agreementbetween the parties with respect to the Sotware andsupersedes any conlicting or additional terms containedin any purchase order or elsewhere.
