English

Tall Tales Workshop - 5th - 7thWorkshop (Banes Hall)This is an enrichment class for students entering grades 5 and 6 who enjoy reading and writing. Students will read a selection of tall tales throughout the week in the classroom and at home. After examining the characteristics of tall tales, students will write their own story using Google Docs.

Cost: $150 plus American Tall Tales by Mary Pope Osborne

Dates: 7/9 - 7/13Meets M-F from 9am - 12noon Min. 4 Max 10

Honors English Workshop - 6th - 8th Hybrid Instruction (Banes Hall and online)This course is designed for students entering grades 6-8 who excel in reading and writing, and would benefit from enrichment in this area. There will be a focus on the mechanics of composition, and reading analysis and critical thinking.

Math

Honors Math Workshop - 6th-8thHybrid Instruction (Banes Hall and online)Available to students entering grades 6-8 who are on the accelerated track in the math course sequence. Students will use an online curriculum to assess where they are in their math ability, which will allow them to track their progress throughout the course. The teacher will guide them in this process and keep track of their progress.

Middle School OverviewClasses  for  the  middle  school  

will  focus  on  core  skills  in  English  and  math.    Available  to  students  entering  grades  5-­‐8,  there  are  opportunities  in  the  core  subjects  for  high  performing  students  who  would  like  to  continue  developing  their  skills.    Additionally,  there  are  new  electives  available  for  middle  school  students  in  a  one  week  workshop  format.    Honors  content  will  be  delivered  through  hybrid  instruction.    These  classes  will  meet  once  a  week  for  three  hours,  with  expectations  that  the  students  also  complete  work  outside  of  class  time.    For  course  work  outside  the  classroom,  support  will  be  delivered  using  an  online  course  management  system.

AnimationWorkshop (Banes Hall)This is a course to introduce students to the exciting field of animation. Students will learn about successful animation techniques, and will complete their own animation movie using Toon Boom’s 2D animation software.

Digital Production Workshop (Banes Hall)This is a course to introduce students to Photoshop, iMovie, and online production. By the end of the week students will have completed work in each of the categories and have an online portfolio of their work. Study Skills - Learning How to LearnWorkshop (Banes Hall)This course is designed to teach students note-taking and study strategies in each of the core areas – math, science, history, and language. It will help lower school students build on their current skills to prepare for the upcoming school year.

New Courses Added!

We  are  excited  to  offer  two  new  technology  courses  this  year!    During  a  week  long  workshop  students  will  learn  new  skills  through  a  project  based  approach.    By  the  end  of  the  week  they  will  have  media  to  show  for  their  efforts!

Study  Skills  is  also  offered  in  a  new  workshop  format.    Students  will  benefit  from  learning  important  study  habits  such  as  note  taking,  annotating  texts,  organization  techniques,  and  more  that  they  can  apply  to  the  upcoming  school  year.

Upper School OverviewStudents  entering  grades  9-­‐12  have  an  opportunity  to  expand  knowledge  in  the  core  areas  through  small  classes  delivered  through  classroom  

instruction  or  hybrid  instruction  (in  person  and  online).    These  courses  are  not  for  credit,  but  topics  are  designed  to  prepare  students  for  the  next  

level.    The  exception  is  that  after  taking  Concepts  in  Algebra  II,  a  student  with  prior  approval  could  be  eligible  to  take  a  placement  test  before  the  school  year  begins.  This  does  not  get  them  credit  for  the  course,  only  the  

option  of  taking  the  placement  test.

ElectivesPublic Speaking and Communication

Enhance your skills in the area of public speaking through this hands on class. Practice constructing and delivering informative, demonstrative, persuasive, and other types of speeches. By the end of the week they will have delivered each kind of speech. They will have the option to record their effort.

Civil Rights MovementExplore the civil rights movement starting in 1955

with the trial of Emmett Till. Discuss the Jim Crowe laws and become exposed to new perspectives on the movement through several pieces of literature. Recommended reading before class begins, Mississippi Trial 1955, by Chris Crowe. Through this class students will have a better understanding of civil rights and the laws shaped our history.

Leadership Academy Over the course of the week students will investigate a variety of themes within the discipline of Leadership. Students will cultivate an appreciation for a wide variety of leadership styles and add to their own unique skills in their ability to lead themselves or others. The course includes a personality-type analysis to develop self-understanding and to build awareness of the wide variety of approaches that can serve to motivate. Through this course students gain practical lessons in time management, decision-making skills, communication skills, and more!

Gender and Popular Media The term Gender Role refers to the socially constructed and culturally specific behavior and expectations for women (femininity) and men(masculinity) (Adams, Bell, Griffin 1997). Throughout this 5 day workshop, students will collaborate through shared experiences and dialogue that identify and examine the expectations they receivethrough media about who they should be as boys or girls, and eventually as men and women. Each day will focus on a specific vehicle through which gender roles are communicated: children's television,commercial advertising, print media. There is a field experience scheduled for the Thursday which will provide an opportunity for students to see gender roles at work in the Wheeling community.

MathAccelerated Concepts in Algebra II

This course is designed for students who have completed Algebra I, and want to work at an accelerated pace to learn the main Concepts in Algebra II. For a Linsly student, this course does not exempt them from taking Algebra II, but it does prepare them for a placement exam if they choose to take it. Non-Linsly students should check with their school to see if they can have the same opportunity

My daughter/son does not attend Linsly. Can he/she take a summer course?

Yes, our summer studies program is available to all students entering grades 5-12

Can my daughter/son attend summer studies and day camp?

Yes, they can attend summer studies in the morning and summer camp in the afternoon! Contact [email protected] for more info on day camp

What is the dress code?

The dress code is casual, but it is expected that students wear appropriate clothing for the classroom. Clothes that are revealing or disruptive to the educational process are strictly prohibited.

What is the course cancellation policy?

There must be a minimum number of students in each course, as listed on the course description. If the minimum number is not met the course will be cancelled.

We are out of town on vacation during one of the weeks - what is the attendance policy?

There are no make up days for summer school, but students are responsible for finding out the work they missed while they were absent. They should also communicate it to the director or teacher ahead of time. If they are absent due to illness they should call or email the day of to inform the teacher.

If a teacher misses a day of class due to illness, they will let the students know a reschedule date

Do classes meet on the 4th of July?No, classes will not meet during the week of July 2nd-6th.
