201V5 District Disaster Relief TrustWITH the recent Bushfires in the District the Trustees of the Fund are requesting your urgent support with monetary donations. DDRT reserves are becoming depleted and there is likely to be high demand in the near future.

Donations can be sent to the Secretary 201V5 DDRT at 838 Buxton Road, Marysville 3779 or anyBank of Melbourne to BSB 033 136 Account 142 930 Account name 201V5 District Disaster Relief Trust.

Club ABN RegistrationIT should be noted that all Lions Club should have an ABN Registration Number. If your Club works for another Organisation whether it is another Lions Club or any Organisation (Op Shop, Fun Run, etc.) at which that organisation is paying you for your services you require an ABN Registration. If you do not have an ABN then paying organisation is required to withhold 45% withholding tax. Your Club can register for an ABN via the net, it takes about 15 minutes to enrol. With an ABN your Club gets 100% of the money due.

Elected Officer NominationsIT IS that time of the year when the District has called for Nominations, for the following positions:District Governor (1), First Vice District Governor (1), Second Vice District Governor (1), 201V5 Disaster Relief Trust (1), ALVIF (3), VLF (1), Licola (1), Lions Cord Blood Foundation (3) and a Host for the 201V5 AGM and Convention 2017. Nominations for the above positions should be sent to the Cabinet Secretary, they will close on 12th August 2015 (late nominations will not be accepted). Nomination forms are attached to the District Statement of Rules and By-laws (pages 43-50), every Club Secretary has a copy.

LCI and District Account Payments HALF-YEARLY International Fees are due by the date appearing on your Clubs LCI Statement, LCI has advised that Clubs that have not paid their fees by the due date will face suspension, the excuse that a Club does not meet by the due date will not be accepted, Clubs are aware that payments are due by the end of January and July. Once again I would like to remind all that at a recent District Convention a motion was moved and passed that unpaid District dues would incur a 10% penalty, the District has to pay our accounts on time and it is only fair that the Clubs also pay their accounts in a timely manner.

Membership Details ALL CLUBS and members have a responsibility to keep their records up to date. It is important that Members notify the Club Secretary of any changes to their personal details, and that the Club Secretary log onto mylci and report the changes. Over the past few months the Multiple District Office has received a number of Lions Magazines returned due to incorrect V5 addresses.Once again thank you all.

WE were saddened to learn of the death of our friend and stalwart of Lions Clubs International, Ron Bromley. Ron’s 41 years of Lions service began as a Charter Member of the Vermont Lions Club in February 1974. He quickly became involved, acting as Secretary in the Club’s first year and President in the next. His appointment as Zone Chairman in 1976-1977 began an unbroken period of 37 years of service at District and Multiple District level. This included District Cabinet Secretary, Multiple District Council Cabinet Secretary, Deputy District Governor, Chairman of various District projects and 34 years as Chairman of Lions Crime Watch Committee. Letters to Father Christmas was started by the Vermont Lions Club in 1975. As Project Chairman Ron took it to a District and then a Multiple District Project, Letters to Father Christmas has become popular with Clubs throughout Australia and many thousands of children have had the thrill of a letter from Santa.Children and the disabled held particular interest for Ron. Within his Club he arranged for children to attend Licola camps each year and organised sponsorships for students at Vermont Primary and Vermont Secondary College. A favourite Club event was the Children of Courage Awards held at Cerebral Palsy Education Centre each year. Ron would conduct a small ceremony involving the children, parents and CPEC staff.Ron was an innovator who was always thinking up ways to improve the lives of those less fortunate and the Lions

organisation. He saw the need for an accessible point of contact between Lions and the general public and so he set up and, with a small band of helpers, conducted the Lions Resource and Referral Centre. More commonly known as “Ron’s

Office”, the centre fielded a wide range of inquires and offers of

help for 18 years.Ron also found time to work for organisations outside of Lions. He was chairman of several voluntary organisations including the Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Foundation and the City of Whitehorse Community

Chest. His great interest in sport was satisfied through his role as

statistician for the Carlton Football Club for which he was awarded a life membership.Ron received many awards. In 2004 his service to the community was recognised when he was presented with an Order of Australia Medal. The citation read: “For services to the community through a range of organisations particularly Lions International.” Vermont Lions presented Ron with a Melvin Jones Fellowship in 1989 and a Second Progression Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2014.To Pauline and her family we extend our heartfelt condolences and our thanks for the important part you have played in helping Ron to achieve so much.

OUR esteemed member Peter Wolfram passed away on 28th April, 2015. Peter had been a member of the Lions Club of Mitcham for several years

and will be sadly missed. He was a thorough gentleman taking part in all activities of the Club. Peter has had an interesting life and sometimes he would tell us about his life as a young man. Our Club sends his family and Lion Evelyn our deepest sympathy in the loss of Peter.

Missed by all.

Chairman’s ReportTHE amount of work done on the working bee was amazing! It can’t be underestimated what a lick of paint can do and our painting team again did a great job, really lifting the appearance of the dining hall, toilets and houses and the giant games, making the village look fresh and new. The dining hall deck also was given a couple of coats of decking oil, the garden beds were trimmed, and all the houses and buildings were de-cobwebbed, and the windows cleaned. Warragul Lions put down new flooring in their sponsored house, and Carnegie Lions and friends got their new bathroom under way. Reg was kept busy with plumbing jobs, Big Bob spent days on the slasher. Thanks again to Geoff Brick, who kept us all very well fed. Camaraderie around the fire pit in the evenings was shared. Altogether a great week. If you haven’t been to a Licola working bee, you’ve missed out! How about putting a team up for the next one. Staff Profile – Arran Flitton, Program Manager Arran was born in 1985 in London. He completed his diploma in outdoor sport

in Winchester and moved to New Zealand in 2008. Since then he gained qualifications in Mountain Biking, Kayaking, and Industrial Rope

Access and was a member of the N.Z. Urban Search and Rescue team. In this latter role he was deployed to three major disasters in N.Z. including the Christchurch Earthquake and the Nelson land slides. He came to Licola last year as a instructor for six months and at the end of the season was offered a permanent position. The rest, as they say, is history. He is recently married to Jayne (her story will follow next month) and now lives at Licola, where he fits in as a local. Arran is a valuable member of our Licola team and welcomes the opportunity to meet all Lions coming to Licola.Lions Sponsored Camps for 2015 Don’t laugh, it’s only a few months until the next LSC, so start looking for children for the September Camps. NEW MEMBERS: District Governor Alan and Members of Lions District 201 V5 have much pleasure in welcoming the following new Members to the District –

Chandra out and about at CroydonSECRETARY Lions Club Croydon Ian Atkinson (L), with President Graham Mackay (R) and an unexpected/uninvited yet welcome guest (C) at Croydon’s Business Meeting (18/5/2015). It was nice to have the Chandraman join us to meet three new prospective

members where he gave them the “inimitable Chandra side of Lions”, even though he turned-up to fine me for my long absence from the Club, just annual leave really – but Chandra swears I have two holidays a year . . . six months each!

Lions Club of Kinglake NewsTHE Club has been busy over the past several months. Our major event was the coordination of the annual Community ANZAC Day Service which held special significance this year being the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings. The weather was not kind to us but the crowd came to pay their respects in big numbers, it was estimated at 300 with a large number of children. We even had the opposition Football/Netball Club attend before the afternoon’s games. We had a large group

of freinds who setup displays in the hall and made morning tea. The students of Yea High School who with their Home Eco Teacher made lots of ANZAC biscuits to feed the masses. The armed services were represented by an Army Captain who gave the address. The Lions Club has also been busy staffing the Football/Netball gate for we think the 24th season, not a bad record. The Club recently sponsored a student from Yea High

School to attend the Y10 WOW camp in the city recently as she was unable to afford the camp cost and we have continued to run the Tool Library hiring out a range of specialised tools to the community. – Ken Aitken President – 5786 1858

Depression . . .AT a time when we, as a Lions Group, focus our thoughts on depression, this message from Marguerite Cahoon brings the story close to home indeed:“I received two messages from a young 30-year-old soldier, Michael Williams, who was briefly a member of my Club. We keep in touch with each other particularly as I sponsored him into Blackburn North Lions Club. Michael has served our country extremely well and was severely wounded in Afghanistan, so I wondered if it was okay to circulate these messages – just another way of helping those grappling with depression and particularly Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.”

Message is as follows: COULD you please show your support for the recovery and treatment of those in Ward 17 who suffer with PTSD and alike illnesses by liking our facebook page. Ward 17 assists all walks of life, especially the armed forces and emergency services by assisting them to understand and treat their symptoms. Please like our page so that we may increase our support and campaign, caring for those who have suffered trauma and protecting us and our way of life.https://www.facebook.com/Ward17PTRS See Ward 17 Song – Fred Smith Acoustic Remix: https://youtu.be/h9kd2dAuOSw

Marguerite – on a related issue:. . . WASN’T the response to the display of hand-made poppies in Federation Square fantastic? Saw them at Melbourne’s International Flower/Garden Show. Amazing number of poppies donated – even from overseas! I hear they will be travelling to various places until 2018 when they will be donated to the War Memorial in Canberra.

Would you kindly note the deadline for copy and pictures

The World’s Greatest ShaveEACH year more than 150,00 people get sponsored to shave or colour their hair to support Australians with blood Cancer and fund research. (Approximately 12,000 get diagnosed each year.)Once again Lions Club of Croydon Treasurer Lion Philip Haynes did his bit for the 'World's Biggest Shave' shave his head and beard for Leukaemia. For those who weren't there take a look at the photos! The shave was carried out at Clip and Curl in Croydon, owned by Dana. The amount raised was around $500.00, a fantastic effort by Lion Phil. The following members were present to give Phil all the support he needed, President Lion Graham Mackay, Lions Doreen, Sheryl and Lions Lady Liz.Although survival rates are improving, blood cancers like these are the third biggest cause of cancer death in Australia.

Coins For KidsCHIRNSIDE Park Shopping Centre was this year's annual setting for 'Coins for Kids' conducted by the Lions Club of Croydon with year 5 and 6 students from Yarra Valley Grammar participating, it was held on Saturday the 2nd, May.Although we had limited space the outstanding amount raised in three and half hours was $1,156.00 an amazing figure for such a short period. 50% of money raised will go to Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation – the other 50% raised goes towards a Children’s charity chosen by the students. Yarra Valley Grammar donated the 50% back to ALCCRF.The enthusiasm of the students was remarkable with their cherubic faces interacting with shoppers and store holder. The Lions Club motto ‘We Serve’ raises awareness of the enjoyment students can gain from participating in community activities.

Lest we forget Gunfire Breakfast

IN THE wee hours of ANZAC Day morning, about 4 am, the ‘Scouting Party’ met at the Lacy Street shed to pick up the barbecue trailer and supplies and headed to the Croydon RSL to set up for the Gunfire Breakfast. By 4.30 am, 16 Croydon Members were in attendance and work began to prepare for the hoards that would descend after the Dawn Service.

A breakaway from the usual way the breakfast is served was necessary as we were told to expect larger than usual numbers. A sit down service meal was deemed too hard to accomplish so bacon and egg rolls and sausages in bread was the order of the morning, all served in brown paper bags. As usual the team didn’t need any coaching as everyone slotted in where they were needed and everything ran like clockwork. Before long three barbecue’s were sizzling away with our newest recruits Geraint and Christina having their ‘baptism of fire’ perfecting the eggs and bacon. I must say they were more than up to the task. After dishes and a clean up, we all sat down and shared a well earned breakfast and fellowship together. Well done to all for a mammoth effort.

BEFORE AFTER

LET me take you back to the day when you first joined your local Lions Club. Remember, it was quite an event in your life. A new organisation was being formed and you were invited to be part of it. At that time you knew very little about Lions and what they were all about, but part of the ceremony was the presentation of your Lions Badge. You were told, “wear it with pride”, it is the one thing which shows others that you are now a member of an international organisation which takes pride in helping others. For a few days you certainly displayed your badge with pride. But after a short time you became tired of transferring the badge to the lapel of another suit or dress and often you just did not bother. Some time ago I was invited to visit a Lions Club in New Zealand and, at the dinner meeting I met some great Lions members, but I noticed that of all the members present, the President was wearing the Lions badge. I pointed this out to them and there was the usual round of excuses: ‘Came out in a hurry tonight and did not have enough time.’ ‘I came straight from work and don’t usually wear a badge on my working clothes’, etc., etc.At a time when we are trying very hard to build up our numbers we should be using the badge as a point of contact, a sign of public relations. Recently, in an elevator in town a fellow passenger spotted my badge and said that he had been asked to join his local Lions Club, but did not really know what it was all about. Over a cup of coffee, during the next few minutes we talked about Lions, and I am reasonably sure that we may have attracted a new member. All because I was wearing my Lions Badge. We need to be mindful of the opportunities which your Lions Badge can create, and be prepared to take advantage of anyone who shows even just a little interest. At the time we may be only of interest because we are cooking sausages, but please spare a moment to tell someone about the Lions, what we do in our community, and the connections we have around the world. Let them know that Lions Clubs International has an interest in local issues and need more people with a similar interest to help promote our cause to our neighbors and invite them to join us.Our Lions Badge can be a sign of the things we do, and have fun doing it. Wear it with pride.
