“Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.”
Again, it is a tool to enable us to see how well we are marshaling our resources, but the proof of the pudding is not the bottom line, but rather how the goals of the Gospel were advanced or not.
Both of these considerations touch on the same thing—the reasonable use of resources for the accomplishment of a purpose. The purpose part is the third element of being stewards who happen to use budgets to enable their spread of the Gospel. What all of the materials—budgets, giving response sheets, stewardship brochures, etc.—ought to direct us to is not themselves, but to what their ultimate purpose is. That ought to be the center of our stewardship conversation—how will people’s lives be made different, how will the Good News be recognized, how will the ministry of Saint Mark’s be advanced-this ought to be the stuff we talk about all year long. The words are especially necessary right now. X

At first glance it looks like a chicken/egg situation. Which came first? The Bible is full of calls to and examples of Steward-ship. It was/is part and parcel not only of what we owe in thanksgiving to God, but
what we owe to ourselves as well. Often we relegate stewardship to the method, or the message and not to the purpose of the stewardship. It is odd, in that
we are stewards of all that God has given us, whether we re-alize it or not. If we want to look at the ef-fectiveness of our steward-ship, we more need to look at what we have accomplished through it.
There are budgets in the Bible as well. Jesus gives us an example in the fourteenth chapter of Luke:
by Fr. Hiller
Stewardship & finance & Budgets, O My!

Our healing ministry
On most Sunday mornings when the congregation is receiving Holy Communion during the 10 AM service, there is also another sacrament being offered to us for our spiritual comfort
and nourishment. It is the rite of the laying on of hands with anointing with oil, also known as the sacrament of Healing. This sacrament is not just for our physical healing but for our emotional, spiritual and mental healing as well. Usually this sacrament is administered by a priest or bishop, but in cases of necessity a deacon or layperson may perform the anointing as long as the oil has been blessed by a priest or bishop. (Page 456, BCP)
Since we currently have a shortage of priests at the parish, this ministry is offered by trained laypersons. At the healing station we offer prayers of healing for each person who comes. Those who wish might ask prayers for family members and friends who are sick or in distress and be anointed on their behalf. You may also come to mark a special occasion such as a birthday, an anniversary or any life event. Having this sacrament within the context of the Holy Eucharist is very appropriate since Jesus is in the healing ministry.
If you would like to receive this sacrament simply come to the prayer station under the icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary either before or after you receive Holy Communion and a minister of healing will be there to pray with you. Please be assured that what is shared in prayer is confidential and is never shared with anyone else unless you give us permission. The healing ministers are also available for counsel and prayer outside the liturgy, as is Fr. Hiller, our interim rector.
There will always be healing ministers present on the first Sunday of the month. There will be a notice in the service leaflet on other Sundays when this sacrament is available. You are also invited to come join the ministers of healing in prayer and laying on of hands.
While we would like this ministry to be available every Sunday at both Masses it is not possible with the current healing ministers available. In
the future we plan to have a training class on healing which will be open to the entire parish.
Please join me in praying for the healing prayer team and our parish - that we may all be instruments of God’s healing love in our parish, our community and the world so in need of healing. X

Diana Blackwell has let us know that she needs to step down as the editor of the Lion. November will be her last issue. Diana has been Lion editor since January 2015. I doubt that many people
realize how much work it is to craft and distribute an issue of the quality that we have come to take for granted. Diana’s work is at a professional level, but it takes an enormous amount of time that she simply no longer has. Diana, thank you for the many beautiful issues that you have given us.
On 15 September, the vestry spent a large part of the meeting discussing possibilities for the future of the Lion. As you know, there have already been changes. Because of the costs of printing the Lion in color, the communications committee and the vestry decided to start sending out the Lion by email and mailing paper copies only to people without Internet access. After November, we will discontinue the weekly Cub and instead send out the Lion on a weekly basis. Constant Comment (CC) is the service
the parish currently uses to send out the Cub. CC also provides a format for a newsletter, which we will start using instead. This new version of the Lion will have the short announcements that are now in the Cub but will also have room for longer articles and pictures. Obviously this will not have the beautiful and creative formatting that Diana has done, but we hope that the increase in frequency will help to make up for that. We will also continue to put the Lion on the web site and print out copies for those without Internet access. Watch for more details in the November Lion.
During the same meeting, the vestry also decided to spend a portion of each meeting discussing one the ministries at St. Mark’s. This month we started with the Newcomers Committee. Among the questions we discussed were: How do we welcome people at St. Mark’s? What can we do to help them realize that we are glad they are here? How do we do that without being intrusive? And for those who have been coming for a while, how do we help them become more a part of our community? X

It often seems to me that the power and significance of symbols and symbolism are misunderstood or even derided and put down. But creating and reverencing symbols are part of being human, even in this so-called “rational”
and technological age. For example, what about the furor over Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand while the national anthem is being played at the ‘49s games? That anthem is a symbol of our country and reverencing it is reverencing our country; but some folks think that not reverencing the anthem can be a way of protesting the country’s failure to live up to its proclaimed mission. In either case, both anthem and action are symbols that evoke strong feelings.
We are surrounded by symbols in our churches and our faith would be impoverished without them. They differ a lot, of course. The Roman Catholic high mass was criticized by some Protestant groups during the Reformation and they reacted by building plain meeting houses devoid of colors, rich vestments, and complicated choreography. But that very plainness was itself a symbol of a faith expressed in austere simplicity.
knowing the stories
Are Symbols just symbolic?
by Alda MorganThis is the fourth part of a series exploring the richness of Bible stories and biblical themes in our worship life.
In latter years, Episcopalians have moved closer to our catholic heritage, to an enrichment of movement, church decoration and liturgy, as well as a return to some of the ancient practices. Many of these changes have enriched the symbolism of the Eucharist--think about the symbolism expressed by the Gospel procession.
Once we better understand their meaning and purpose, these symbols can deepen our faith and practice, but even without full understanding, symbols speak. Raised a Baptist, I was overcome by the palpable sense of reverence I encountered when I first attended an Episcopal liturgy. Perhaps part of what I felt was that the congregation’s reverence was given physical expression, not only attentive silence. As I came to understand what this plethora of symbols meant, my sense of experiencing or being touched by the Holy has deepened.
We take this wealth for granted at our peril and we need to continue to grow in our understanding and gratitude for it. X

The Knell
POEISISFrom Lewis Brown
The Bell doth toll:Lord help thy servant
whose perplexed SoulDoth wishly lookOn either handAnd sometimes offers,
sometimes makes a standStruggling on th’ hook.
Now is the season,Now the great combat
of our flesh and reason!O help, my God!See, they break inDisbanded humours,
sorrow, troops of Sin,Each with his rod.
Lord make they BloodConvert and colour
all the other floodAnd streams of griefThat they may beJuleps and cordials
when we call on theeFor some relief.
George Herbert(1593-1663)
Note: This serious prayerful poem could sound amusing to our 21st century ears (‘Juleps and cordials”)but that may make it more interesting to attend to its content.

After more than four months working with the city of Berkeley, American Solar got final plans approved and obtained the necessary permits for our new solar panels. The construction took place
over the summer months. The expected work time was extended, due to some requested changes by the city and normal work delays as the 60 panels (each weighing in at 42 pounds) were installed. We went on line at the first of September.
We can see the actual creation of power via graphs as it is happening on a pad that was provided by American Solar. We are working out the details about where to place this unit so it will work with our router and give everyone an opportunity to see power in the making by our very own solar panels.
Photos below, taken by drone, show our rooftop before and after the installation. X
Left: The inverter panel, which changes the DC powerfrom the panels to AC power which feds into our electrical panel from PG&E. The panel is what monitors this process as well. This panel is located on the east wall of the church in "dumpster alley.".

The Lion Looks Back
Profiling the parish,40 Years ago
Well, almost forty years ago: January 15, 1979, to be exact, as the profile’s cover specifies. This document turned up recently in a dusty folder, propitiously, it seems, since
the parish is once again in a period of transition, as it was at that time, following the untimely death of its rector, George F. Tittmann. Its sub-title states that it has been “Prepared by the people of St. Mark’s with the help of the Profile Committee,” a telling clue to its nature—and to the nature of the committee—as we shall see. It may well be of some interest, then, for us now to look at how St. Mark’s congregation looked at itself in 1979.
The cover of the mimeographed booklet of eighteen pages (with an eight-page appendix) lists the five members of the committee, whose names will be very familiar to the old-timers amongst us: Barbara Arnold, a long-time lay church worker; Marybeth Downs, very active over many years in a number of parish groups; Mary P. Harrell, the wife of John Harrell, a clergy associate; Barbara Oliver, longtime director of religious education (and the sister of Alda Morgan); and Bruce Robison, a UC graduate, then a seminarian at CDSP, who went on to earn a doctorate at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and has since 1994 been the rector of St. Andrew’s, a large Episcopal parish in Pittsburgh: clearly a well-chosen, carefully balanced group, especially when we learn that the profile’s editor was the Reverend Norman Mealy, of blessed memory!
It’s no surprise, then, that the table of contents on the first page is clearly organized into six sections framed by introduction and conclusion: St. Mark’s in the Past; St. Mark’s Today: Facts and Figures; St. Mark’s Today: Concerns of the Parish; St. Mark’s Today: Glimpses from the Outside; Priorities for the Future; Reflections about a New Rector. Though produced by
a much larger committee and presented on-line and in a much glitzier—dare one say?—lay-out, it should come as no surprise, either, that many of these same concerns were echoed in our most recent profile.
The introduction tells us that the committee “…carefully worked out a process for enlisting the largest possible contribution from the entire parish. Questionnaires were designed, one for committees and staff, the others for small house group discussions”; sounds familiar, right? That special arrangements were made for “our high school group to share its concerns” is certainly less so, as is the fact that “people outside the parish” were asked “to comment upon
their perceptions of our work.” Further, “all conversations were tape-recorded and later thoughtfully listened to and summarized by persons not present.” Interestingly, we learn that “all tapes and summaries have been saved and are available for further study.” The data thus collected became the foundation of the profile.
Your leonine columnist hopes that no faithful reader who’s been looking backwards through this column expects
us to tarry long on the section devoted to the parish’s past. On the contrary, it seems much more appealing to look over the congregational statistics unearthed through the questionnaires. The appendix presents what appear today, compared to the sleek graphics provided by our present-day word-processing programs, as quite primitive charts that paint a picture of the general age, gender, income, and pledge giving of parishioners. Before looking closely at them, it is helpful that the report informs us that in the 1977 journal of the diocese, “St. Mark’s reported 611 baptized members, 469 present communicants, and 266 households. Average attendance at four festival services was 273 [!]; 91 [!] students were registered in the church school.”

Solution to Bible Scramble:
He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he. Do they not err that devise evil? But mercy and truth shall be to them that de-vise good.

On October 22 from 10 am-3:30 pm, laypeople and clergy are invited to CDSP for a day of theological reflection, discussion and worship exploring the church's response to the
crisis of climate change. Speakers will include former Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, who is the current St. Margaret's Visiting Professor of Women in Ministry; Bishop Marc Andrus of California, CDSP President and Dean W. Mark Richardson, and Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, professor of theological and social ethics at CDSP and Pacific Lutheran Seminary of California Lutheran University.
Jefferts Schori will deliver the keynote address, titled "Creation and the Effective Word: Holy Storytelling, Creation, and God's Mission," and Moe-Lobeda will give an address titled "Truthtelling, Inequity, and Christian Action."
The day will culminate at 2:30 pm with a liturgy to bless CDSP's new installation of solar panels led by Bishops Jefferts Schori and Andrus. The panels, installed on Easton, Parsons, and Shires Halls earlier in 2016, make up the largest solar installation of any seminary in the United States.
