Over 20 golf courses can be found along Estoril and Sintra, the Oeste region, and Setúbal/Tróia. All courses are top notch – the only difficulty is selecting one.

City highlights

The historical quarters of central Lisbon are perfect for visitors to the Portuguese capital to experience for themselves. Their culture, history, architecture and the people are fundamental aspects of Lisbon’s identity, and those who explore them will discover their own personal map.

The Bairro Alto is one of the most characterful and attractive quarters of the city. Traditional restaurants nestle alongside cosy bookshops, tea rooms, funky design shops and the boutiques of the most respected Portuguese fashion designers. The Bairro Alto is a place where people meet in an eclectic and multicultural atmosphere.

From Bairro Alto, stroll down to the Chiado, the sophisticated hub for the city’s young people, artists and intellectuals. The Chiado is an area of iconic cafés including “A Brasileira”, art schools, theatres and of living history.

And strolling down again you will find the Baixa, the city’s traditional shopping district where visitors can stroll around the streets and find dozens of shops offering a wide range of temptations. Rua Augusta is the main artery of the Baixa, leading north from Terreiro do Paço (known as Black Horse Square by the English) to the beautiful square of Rossio (Praça Dom Pedro V).

Just north of Rossio, discover Avenida da Liberdade, which in the 19th century was the favourite promenade for the Lisbon élite. Today, the Avenida is home to exclusive international boutiques to tempt and inspire.

The tram is one of the most famous and typical forms of transport in Lisbon. From the Baixa to the top of the hill in Alfama, you will find typical Lisbon streets and alleys and be able to discover the unique and extraordinary views of the city and river – either take a traditional tram or explore Alfama on foot.

By tram along the riverside you can reach Belém, the neighbourhood with the most imposing symbols of the city – Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and the Torre de Belém – both classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Although these two monuments were built in the 16th century, they are located near a modern cultural centre – Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) – where you can find art exhibitions and take a walk along the gardens. Not to be missed in Belém is the “pastel de nata”, a traditional and delicious pastry.

The Parque das Nações (Nations Park) – the riverside venue for Expo98 – is ideal for all ages. Located in the eastern part of Lisbon, this extensive cultural, entertainment, residential and corporate complex is a focus of the city’s cultural life. The gardens along the river frame the facilities, including the Pavilhão Atlântico (Atlantic Pavillion), venue for concerts and major international sports events, and the new Casino de Lisboa.

The Oceanário de Lisboa (Aquarium), not to be missed, and the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (Knowledge Pavillion) are other attractions in this unique part of Lisbon. Take a ride on the cable car offering breathtaking views of the river and the city along its one kilometre circuit.

Night life

Lisbon is an extremely lively city. There is always something happening, 365 days a year. But it is at night that the main doors of entertainment open, with whole neighbourhoods dedicated to fun and partying in good company. Join in and help maintain the tradition of night life entertainment into the early morning.

The Bairro Alto – or the Bairro as locals call it – has a unique tradition in the history of Lisbon night life. Always changing, the narrow cobbled streets fill with people every night, especially to Fridays and Saturdays as everybody is taking the best possible advantage of the weekend.

The number of restaurants, venues and the highly diversified clientele make the Bairro Alto a mixed and friendly place to be. Everybody is welcome, from young people in search of lively cocktail bars, to older customers who seek out quiet bars with good music.

In Bairro Alto and Alfama you can also hear Fado, a vocal music unique to Lisbon. You can find numerous Fado houses, from the most formal to the most informal where everybody sings spontaneously.

The riverside

The riverside areas offer lively nightlife and the most well known bars, dance venues and clubs are on Avenida 24 de Julho, and in the Santos area.

In the Docas, from Alcântara to Santa Apolónia, you will find plenty of entertainment, right next to the river. These areas, which are also lively during the day, offer the perfect backdrop for an enjoyable evening.

Besides dancing and enjoying the unique atmosphere, you can also listen to concerts or to the best international DJs. In this riverside area, you will also find excellent restaurants.

Shopping

Shopping in Lisbon is really worthwhile. In addition to the many international brand boutiques, designer shops and shopping centres, you will also find best quality Portuguese articles to bring home.

Most of the shops are located in the Baixa quarter and Chiado area. But, to find the most exclusive international brands, try another traditional shopping area, Avenida da Liberdade. Antique shops are generally concentrated in Rua Dom PedroV, Rua do Alecrim and Rua de São Bento.

Gastronomy

Lisbon is the ideal destination for good food lovers. You will find restaurants with typical food and excellent service, which is no wonder since good food is widely appreciated by the Portuguese themselves.

Lisbon offers a wide range of typical dishes and excellent wines to be enjoyed at its many restaurants. Because of its location by the sea, Lisbon is ideal to try delicious fish dishes. “Bacalhau” (dried, salted cod) prepared in a 1001 ways is the national Portuguese dish. Steaks (bifes) are among the most popular dishes, “Bife à Café” being the most typical in Lisbon.

Walking through the streets in the Autumn or Winter you will find the famous and delicious roast chestnuts – sold in the streets.

Among the desserts and cakes offered everywhere, the “pasteis de Belem”, in particular, are a must. Made from a special recipe that belonged to a friar from the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, they have been a delight to Portuguese taste for over 160 years.

This area also extends into the interior, combining unforgettable beaches with two estuaries, mountains and pure vegetation on the quiet inland plains. The area boasts a mixture of colours that radiate a unique light that always has a special charm.

OesteThe Oeste is a fertile region, full of natural and cultural attractions. Its landscapes, full of colour, varying with the seasons of the year, are dominated by thousands of hills scattered with whitewashed villages and the characteristic windmills that symbolise the Oeste region.

The Oeste connects the sea and the countryside, in a land with the marks of many different cultures. With its golf courses, golfers can find here the perfect symbiosis between the sea and the countryside, in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites / historic sites

One of the most imposing symbols of the city is here – the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, the construction of which was started in 1501 by King Manuel I and finished a century later. Overlooking the magnificent Praça do Império, the monument is an outstanding example of late Gothic and Renaissance architecture and is regarded as one of Lisbon’s finest landmarks.

Royal, religious, naturalist and nautical decorative elements combine to create a building that is considered the jewel of the distinctively Portuguese Manueline style, and it has been recognised as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO.

Also in Belém, on the river bank, is another marvellous Manueline monument, again classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Torre de Belém. Designed in the 16th century by Francisco Arruda, the Torre de Belém is a square tower with a polygonal bastion facing the river Tagus.

The exterior facades, balconies and verandas are covered with abundant decoration, with Arab and Venetian influences which contrasts with the austerely decorated interior. The organic elements of the Manueline style – such as plants and animals

- are represented in many different forms and the Torre de Belém has the first sculptural portrayal of an African animal, in this case a rhinoceros.

Oeste Two of the most important National Monuments, both commemorating landmarks in Portuguese history and both recognised as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO are here: Mosteiro da Batalha and the Mosteiro de Alcobaça.

SintraSintra is an inexhaustible attraction. The perfect symbiosis between nature and its man made heritage led to its UNESCO World Heritage status in the Cultural Landscape category in 1995.

The town has been adored over the years by artists and writers from all over the world. The passion for the town reached its peak in the 19th century, in the heart of the romantic era. Poets such as Lord Byron, who called it a “Garden of the Earthly Paradise”, and Portuguese writers such as Eça de Queiroz, who described it in many passages of his works, helped create an aura of the town, which is theirs by right.
