Understanding Your Health Report: Individual Cow

ITEMS DISPLAYED ON THE REPORT

This report lists animals having health problems in your herd. It is one more tool in the decision making process. In addition to providing the estimated costs

associated with health problems, this report includes presents 305 day production information and the reproductive status of the cow.

COWS INCLUDED

You can select the time period of

the events that will appear on your

report. By choosing between test

interval, current lactation and back

a certain number of days, you will

see the events for the animals

having had a health event during

that interval. Once the animals

have been selected, you can

choose to see their health events

during their current lactation,

previous and current lactation or

during their productive lives.

Each event appears on a separate

line, with the oldest at the top.

Events having occurred during the

selected interval appear in bold.

If the animal has started a new

lactation since the last health

event on the report, you will see

her completed lactation

information and her most recent

test information.

HEALTH OR DISPOSAL EVENT

This section provides the health events, including the number of days in

milk at the event, the date, description and estimated cost. When a cost

has been established for an event, and the event contributes to the

health costs, the cost information is included. If the cow was sold or

died the date is indicated. (To learn more refer to Understanding your

Health Reports: Glossary and Definitions)

ESTIMATED PRODUCTIVE LIFE HEALTH COST

The total estimated lifetime health costs are presented for the productive life of each animal.

This information is cumulated for the productive lifetime for which the animal was present in your herd

and for the events for which the costs are included in the herd health costs. (To learn more refer to

Understanding your Health Reports: Glossary and Definitions)

MILK PRODUCTION

Given that an animal can experience more than one health event, and that these events can have an impact on

the productivity of the animal, each event is associated with the actual or projected 305 day milk at the test

following the health event. This information allows you to analyse the productivity of each animal on the

report. Additionally, if the animal has changed status since the event (ex.: dry, calved), you will see the

completed lactation information and the most recent test information. The BCA's and deviations allow you to

compare the production of the animal due to the health event(s) and to the rest of the herd.

CURRENT REPRODUCTIVE STATUS

The current reproductive status for each

animal is presented on the last line for each

animal, indicating days bred, times bred and

current reproductive status.

Understanding Your Health Report: Disease SummaryItems Displayed on the Report

This report lists the occurrence of the 8 health events identified by veterinarians as having the greatest economic importance. Animals having these problems are groupedby disease with an indication of the number of health events reported during the lactation. It is one more tool in the decision making process. In addition to grouping your

herd health problems, this report includes 305 day production information, the average somatic cell count and the reproductive status of the cow.

Milk ProductionGiven that these events can have an impact on the productivity of the animal, for each eventyou will see the DIM, number of tests and the actual or projected 305 day milk as of the dateindicated. This information allows you to analyze the productivity of each animal on the report.Additionally, the average somatic cell count for the lactation is presented.

CurrentReproductiveStatusThe currentreproductive statusfor each animal ispresented in the lastcolumn

Health EventsThis section provides the health events, including the lactation number, the number of days inmilk at the event, and the description. Additionally in the group heading the total number ofcases of that disease for the interval is displayed.

Summary of Health EventsHere you will find a cross reference of the 8 diseases. The number of events of each disease for that animal during the lactation is presented. One canquickly identify animals having experienced multiple health events within these disease groups.

Cows IncludedYou must select the maximumdate for the events appearing onyour report. You can choose themaximum date from one of thefollowing options: current test, previous test, previous test minus30 days and the end of a previousmonth. Once you have chosen themaximum date, you will choosethe number of days for which youwish to see health events on thisreport. Once the dates have beenselected, you will see the eventsfor the animals having had ahealth event in one of the eightgroups during that interval. Foryour convenience, the intervaldates are presented in the header.

Each cow with an eventwithin the group appears on aseparate line.

12 Month SummaryTo allow you to compare the current occurrence of these diseases to theoccurrence in the past year, the total number of cases reported in the pastyear for each of the 8 diseases is presented.

Understanding your Udder Health Status reportThe SCC report: Udder Health Status separates the cows into 4 categories which represent important periods in the production cycle of the animal, thus allowing for analysis of the udder health during these periods. This report presents a portrait of the herd at a specific point in time. A regular tracking of this report facilitates analysis of the herd and follow-up of the udder health management plan.

s

For each category, the percent of animals presenting the characteristics of the group is given. The first number is the affected animals, the second one the animals at risk. In this example, 6 animals have a new infection in the lactation of the 29 animals in milk that did not have an infection at the previous test. The division gives 21% of eligible animals with a new infection at this test. If no animals meet the criterion the counter will be 0 and the list blank.

Fresh Cows – New Infection: Are there a large number of animals that dried with a SCC < 200 000 and now have an SCC > 200 000 in early lactation? How may heifers calve with an SCC > 200 000?

New infection in Lactation: Do many animals seem to be doing well and then find themselves with an SCC > 200 000?

Dry Period – Failure to Cure: Do many animals having had an SCC > 200 000 when they were dried continue to experience difficulties during the dry period and start their next lactation with an SCC > 200 000?

Parameters for categories: Fresh Cows – New Infection: 1st test, DIM < 50, SCC > 200 000, SCC last test previous lactation < 200 000 or heifer 1st test, DIM < 50, SCC > 200 000 New Infection in Lactation: SCC > 200 000, SCC previous test < 200 000 or DIM 1st test > 50, SCC > 200 000 Dry Period – failure to Cure: 1st test, DIM < 50, CCS > 200 000, SCC last test previous lactation > 200 000.Chronic Infection: SCC > 200 000, SCC previous test > 200 000 or SCC > 200 000, DIM <50 at second test, SCC previous test > 200 000 GOATS: The 200 000 benchmark is to be replaced by 750 000 everywhere in this document. 2010-07-13a

Chronic Infection: Are there many animals that find themselves test after test with an SCC > 200 000?

Valacta–TransitionCowIndexTMTCI–ExplanatoryDocument20100830 1

Valacta’sTransitionCowIndex™–TCI

ExplanatoryDocumentWe know the transition period is a sensitive one that will affect the cow’s performancethroughout her upcoming lactation. The Transition Cow Index™ (TCI) is a new tool, offeredexclusivelybyValacta*,thatproducerscanusetoquicklyandobjectivelyevaluatethesuccess(orfailure)oftheircurrenttransitionmanagementstrategies.

TheTCIwasdevelopedbyDr.KenNordlund,fromtheUniversityofWisconsin,usingdatafrom500000cowsin4000herds.Themodelfirstcalculatesacow’sexpectedproductioninhernextlactationbasedonanumberoffactors,whichinclude,amongothers,thecow’slastlactation’s305dayproduction,lactationnumber,age,milkingfrequency,numberofdaysdry,andmonthofcalving.Themodelthengeneratesaprojectedproductionforthecurrentlactationusingthefirsttestmilkyieldasapointofreference.TheTransitionCowIndexisthedifferencebetweenthecow’sexpectedproductionandherprojectedproduction.

Let’slookatanexample.Acow’sexpectedproductionis10,000kg.Thiscowisinfineformatcalving,hasanexcellentfirsttestandherfirstmilkweightpredictsan11,000kglactation.Thisgives her a TCI of + 1000 kg. Her neighbour, a cow of similar level, also has an expectedproductionof10,000kg.Hertransitionismoredifficult,althoughsheissparedsomeailments(no milk fever or clinical ketosis or displaced abomasum, etc). Her firsttest yield predicts a9,000kglactation.HenceshehasaTCIof–1000kg.

The TCI can only be calculated for cows that are at their second or later lactation, since thepreviouslactationisusedtoestablishexpectedproduction.

TheTCI is calculated forcowswitha first testdatebetween the5thand39thdayof lactation.Cowtestedforthefirsttimeatmorethan39daysintotheirlactationwillnothaveaTCI.Onlythefirstmilkweightistakenintoconsideration.

Evaluatingyourherddata

Becauseyouareenrolledinthemilkrecordingprogram,Valactahasalltheinformationrequiredto calculate the TCI for the cows in your herd. As long as you have been enrolled on milkrecordingforatleast10months,wecanuseyourdatatoproducethereportsshownonpages3and 4. If your herd average TCI is clearly below zero, it means you have the opportunity toimprove the profitability of your operation by making a few changes in your transition cowmanagement. You may just need to adjust the ration. Or you might need to improve animalcomfortandreducehousingrelatedstressinthedaysbeforeandaftercalving.___________*TheTransitionCowIndexTMisatrademarkoftheWisconsinAlumniResearchFoundation.ValactahasacquiredanexclusivelicencetousethisindexinQuebecandtheAtlanticprovinces.

Valacta–TransitionCowIndexTMTCI–ExplanatoryDocument20100830 2

IfyourherdaverageTCIis+500orbetter,itmeansthatyouhavefoundtherightstrategy,sinceyour cows are performing better than expected. Your transition management is excellentbecause you manage to prevent major health problems and the cows that are afflicted arequicklyidentifiedandtreatedeffectively.

Even with a low incidence of clinical problems, like downer cow, clinical ketosis, or recurringdisplaced abomasum problems, a herd could have an average TCI of 500. This would be thecase if, forexample,a largeproportionofthecowswere, atcalving, onthevergeofaseriousproblem, such as milk fever or ketosis, that would require attention from a veterinarian.Obviously, there is good reason to look for the source of the problems and take correctiveaction.

CowswithaverynegativeTCI,intheregionof2000,aretheonesthatmostlikelyhadaserioushealthproblematcalving.

Herds with a positive TCI obviously have a better chance that cows will survive to 60 days. Astudy of nearly 200 000 cows reported that cows with a TCI of 5000 had only a 50 per centchanceofsurvival to60days inmilkwhilecowswithaTCIof0hadmore thana95percentchanceofsurvivingmorethan2monthsinlactation.

TheTransitionCowIndexcannotbeusedto identifyweaknessesthatneedtobecorrected inyour transition management. It does, however, provide an objective evaluation of theperformanceofthecowsinyourherdduringthefirstdaysoflactationandacomparisonwithexpectedproduction.Valactahasothertoolsat itsdisposal tohelpyou identify theareasyouneedtoimprove.

The arrival of the Transition Cow Index is an opportunity to offer dairy producers two newreports, whicharepresentedinthepagesthatfollow.

Thefirstiscalled:TransitionCowIndex:FreshCowList.Thisisalistofcowsthatcalvedbetweenthenexttolastandlasttestdate.

KETOLAB Measures What You Can’t See

Ketolab is an analysis service exclusive to the Valacta laboratory, providing

a measurement of the risk of ketosis for dairy cows using milk recording samples.

A Useful Tool For Early Screening

Integrated within the milk recording infrared analyzers, Ketolab has the advantage of being fast and inexpensive. It provides the dairy producer, his veterinarian and his Valacta representative with a global assessment of the risk of ketosis in the herd. In addition, Ketolab makes a preventive approach easier since it detects subclinical cases. This is why we say that Ketolab “measures what you can’t see”.

Ketosis

Ketosis is a metabolic disease that’s more widespread than you’d expect in early lactation. Close to one out of three cows may be affected. Visible signs are: rapid decline in body condition score, loss of appetite, lower milk yield, the scent of acetone in the breath or milk. Furthermore, several other cows in the herd are probably experiencing subclinical ketosis for some time after calving, unnoticeable by anyone.

Subclinical ketosis is devious, because it inhibits the immune system. It has a significant impact on milk production and reproduction, as well as on the incidence of other metabolic diseases, the incidence and severity of mastitis and the culling rate. It is estimated that for a 60-cow herd, the average cost of ketosis is over $6000 per year.

Preventing ketosis means a strict management of feeding and comfort at the barn during the dry period and early lactation. In order to know for certain if several animals are affected, you need a reliable measurement tool.

The only way to detect subclinical ketosis is by measuring the concentration of ketone bodies in blood, in urine or in milk. This is precisely what Ketolab does. The ABC of Ketone Bodies

Ketosis is characterized by the presence of excess ketone bodies in the blood. Ketone bodies are molecules that are normally found in animal tissues in small amounts. Their presence in excess indicates that the animal is in difficulty: the cow does not eat enough to meet her needs, she is losing weight and gives less milk. Her body attempts to compensate by mobilizing fat reserves. Beyond a certain point, the liver can no longer adequately metabolize the reserves mobilized, which then results in ketone bodies in excess amount. This is what we call ketosis.

Vision2000 Report

KETOLAB: Subclinical Ketosis Screening Three ketone bodies are present in the blood, urine and milk: acetone, acetoacetate and BHB (Beta-hydroxybutyrate). BHB, being more stable and less volatile, has been selected for measurement.

Thanks to major, cutting-edge research carried out by Valacta since 2010, with the valuable collaboration of the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire of Université de Montréal and of the Foss Corporation from Denmark, the most up-to-date milk analyzers used at the Valacta lab can now provide an accurate and reliable measurement of ketone bodies directly from the milk recording samples.

The KETOLAB report can cover more than one page depending on herd size.

Cows tested at 90 days or less in lactation on test day are listed to the right in three sections: Positive, Suspect, Negative, according to the measured level of BHB.

On the left, two graphs present an overview of the BHB analysis results:

1. At first test.

2. For tests in the last 90 days.

First graph:

BHB At First Test

The percentages above the graph represent the proportion (on a rolling 90-day basis) of the cows at first test after calving with a Suspect or Positive measurement (above 0.15 mmol/litre).

The percentage is based on the number of cows that calved, for which a result is available. For herds with 250 cows or more, the proportion is calculated for 30-day periods rather than for 90 days.

(Note: the left part of this example is a deliberate addition in order to present a full year of data. Added percentages left of 22% have been made up).

KETOLAB: Subclinical Ketosis Screening Second Graph:

BHB In Early Lactation For Tests in The Last 90 Days

This graph shows the result for each cow up to 90 days in milk, tested for BHB in the last 90 days. For a herd enrolled on monthly screening with Ketolab, each cow will be represented more than once.

Ketosis screening through ketone bodies measurement is specific to early lactation, so only the results for cows 90 days or less in milk are displayed.

Several factors can lead to ketosis:

Energy-deficient ration, severe stress, excessive body condition score, too much moisture in silage, etc. Nowadays, experts differentiate type I, type II and type III ketosis in order to better deal with this problem.

This graph allows your veterinarian or Valacta Advisor to pinpoint what type of ketosis could be affecting your herd, thereby facilitating the implementation of more appropriate corrective measures.

Complementary Tools

Ketolab is a very useful tool to monitor the incidence of ketosis in your herd in order to improve prevention. Furthermore, it is the ideal complement to the Transition Cow IndexTM, which gives an overall score to the performance of each cow during the critical dry period and transition phase.

Talk with your veterinarian and your farm advisors to determine the most profitable way to use the various tools available from your dairy industry partners.

The Ketolab service is currently available in Quebec only.
