TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, August 6th

The Transfiguration of the Lord

“And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.”

“Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.”

Source: “Stewardship Bulletin Reflections.” Archdiocese of Newark Call to Stewardship (Summer 2017).

“The Transfiguration is a prayer event. It displays visibly what happens when Jesus talks with his Father: the profound interpenetration of his being with God, which then becomes pure light. In his oneness with the Father, Jesus is himself ‘light from light.’”

Pope Benedict XVI

WEEKLY  RUNDOWN

“Listen to Jesus and follow him.

That’s the message of the Transfiguration.”

– Pope Francis

Men’s Cornerstone Group meets every other Wednesday at 7:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church in Closter. Our next meeting will be on August 9th, then again on August 23rd. Please call Deacon Michael Giuliano at 201-983-1591 or Bill Angresano at 201-370-2698 if you have any questions.

Are You Being Called to Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction encourages us to explore a closer relationship with God. It’s really not about being directed. Rather, it is very much about being encouraged to draw closer to God.

Spiritual Direction is carried out in the context of a one-to-one trusting and confidential relationship. The spiritual director is trained to be a guide who journeys with you and listens to your story with an ear for the movement of the Holy Spirit.

If you think that spiritual direction might be a way for you to discern God’s actions in your life, contact Deacon Lex at [email protected] or 201-568-6819.

Today we are celebrating The Transfiguration of the Lord. This celebration falls on a Sunday every six years or so. We also heard today’s story of Jesus’ Transfiguration earlier this year on the Second Sunday of Lent.

“The Gospels report that at two solemn moments, the Baptism and the Transfiguration of Christ, the voice of the Father designates Jesus his ‘beloved Son’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #444).

“The Transfiguration ‘is the sacrament of the second regeneration’: our own Resurrection. From now on we share in the Lord's Resurrection through the Spirit who acts in the sacraments of the Body of Christ. The Transfiguration gives us a foretaste of Christ's glorious coming, when he ‘will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body.’ But it also recalls that ‘it is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God’” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #556).

The following individuals were recently baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Let us welcome them into our faith community!
