TODAY’S GOSPEL MESSAGE Sunday, February 9th
Matthew 5:13-16
“Jesus said to his disciples . . . ‘You are the light of the world. . .your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.’”
“Before creating any living thing, God created light to shine forth over all. But in our world, much is hidden in the shadows, intentionally or unintentionally. In baptism, we were given a candle, lit from the Easter candle with the light of Christ. We are called to shine that light into the shadows of our world, exposing sin, injustice, poverty, and evil. In all things, let us hope the good deeds we see done truly glorify the source of love and grace.”

Monday 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13; Mark 6:53-56 Saint Scholastica, Virgin (Memorial) – “According to tradition, St. Scholastica was the twin sister of St. Benedict, the founder of Western monasticism. What little is know about her life is found in Pope St. Gregory the Great’s second Dialogue, which is an account of her brother’s miracles. She is the patroness of Benedictine nuns.”

“Faith Lights Our Way
. . .faith is a light, for once the flame of faith dies out, all other lights begin to dim. The light of faith is unique, since it is capable of illuminating every aspect of human existence. Faith, received from God as a supernatural gift, becomes a light for our way, guiding our journey through time.”

WEEKLYRUNDOWN
Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Liturgical and Catechetical ministries are assisted by parishioners who are fully-initiated in the Catholic Church.
What does it mean to be fully-initiated in the Catholic Church? It means that an individual has received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
We invite fully-initiated Catholics to become members of our liturgical and catechetical ministries—Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Adult Altar Servers, and Children’s Liturgy of the Word. Youth Altar Server ministry is for children in grades 4-8 and, therefore, the requirement to be fully-initiated does not apply.
If you are interested in serving in these ministries, please complete the Ministry Sign-Up form below.

GIVING&GRATITUDE
The monthly collection for the Office of Concern is this weekend. Non-perishable items should be placed in the elevator lobby. Thank you for supporting the Office of Concern’s outreach efforts to assist those in
“Shining the Light of Christ”
2020 Annual Appeal
The 2020 Annual Appeal “Shining the Light of Christ” has begun. By now you may have received a letter from Cardinal Tobin inviting you to make a gift to the Appeal. We encourage all of you to look it over and prayerfully consider making a pledge.
This past year’s goal was $65,532 and you raised $79,591. We recently received our 2019 rebate in the amount of $8,634.49. Congratulations on such a charitable job well done. This year our goal for the Annual Appeal is $72,279. If you have not received materials in the mail, then please pick up a brochure from the Narthex or from the kiosks. Always, thank you for allowing that light of charity to shine so well here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. —Fr. Mark
Ways to give: • Donate online at rcan.org/sharing • Make a gift over the phone at (973) 497-4129 • Fill out an envelope at your parish during collection weekends • Complete and return the pledge card you received in the mail
The 2020 Annual Appeal will kick off here at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church the weekend of March 7th – 8th.
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
The generosity of being a good steward of your gifts has a positive effect on people and it is contagious! Good works encourage more good works. Let your light shine! Be careful to recognize that God is working through you and don’t put yourself above the people you have been called to help.
The Archdiocese of Newark states that the overall goal for the 2020 Annual Appeal is $8.3 million. However, the needs of the Archdiocese of Newark far exceed this number. Gifts to the Annual Appeal will be to the benefit of the following programs and ministries: Proclaiming the Gospel ($1 million), Passing on the Faith ($2.9 million), Caring for the Poor and Vulnerable ($2.3 million) and Forming Future Priests and Supporting Retired Clergy ($2.1 million).
Recurring giving that helps plan our parish’s needs and programs.
