Recommended Tools: MARATHON® Complete Maintenance Fixture Kit FXAR0000 including special

Marathon Plus™ B-station collar (MATE01143), Flat Blade Screwdriver

Step 1:

Remove the stripper and the punch from punch holder.

Position the holder onto the threaded post on the maintenance fixture. Smaller post is for A and B stations, larger post is for all other stations. (See LIT00573 for complete use of Maintenance Fixture.)

Step 2:

Tighten the draw bolt using a hex wrench and extension bar. This

will compress the springs in the holder and relieve the pressure on the

retaining ring.

If the draw bolt is damaged, or the maintenance fixture is not

available, then use an arbor press to compress the assembly (see 2A).

Step 3:

(3A) Position the tip of the flat blade screwdriver into the notch at

the end of the retaining ring. (For B-station only insert screwdriver into the ID

vertical slot and under round wire retaining ring.)

(3B) Use the screwdriver to pry up the end of the retaining ring

until it can be removed by hand. Remove the retaining ring and set

aside. (Note: B-station wire ring may need to be tapped around with screwdriver and

hammer to get opening in the wire closer to the slot.)

Step 4:

Loosen the draw bolt using a hex wrench until the thread is disengaged from the

threaded post of the maintenance fixture, or release the pressure in the arbor press.

Step 5:

Remove the tang assembly from the holder.

Step 6

Step 6:

Check the disk springs for obvious signs of damage. If one disk

spring is cracked, then replacement of the entire stack is strongly

recommended. Note: the disc springs must be installed in the same order

in which they were removed. Refer to illustration for proper positioning.

Step 8:

Lower the new Marathon Plus™ tang assembly into the end of the holder,

ensuring that the pin on the tang lines up with the keyway in the holder.

Step 9:

Tighten the draw bolt using a hex wrench and extension bar. Alternatively, use an

arbor press. This will compress the springs in the holder and allow access to the

retaining ring groove around the inside diameter of the holder.

Step 10:

(10A) Uncoil the retaining ring slightly and position the end of

the ring into the retaining ring groove around the inside diameter of

the holder. (Note: B-station uses a round wire ring. Start one end in the ID

groove approximately as shown in picture 10A-1.)

(10B) Feed the retaining ring into the groove.

(10C) Use the tip of the flat blade screwdriver to press down on

the surface of the retaining ring. Note: the ring will not slide within

the groove. See picture 10C-1 for B-station.

Step 11:

Loosen the draw bolt using a hex wrench until the thread is

disengaged from the threaded post of the maintenance fixture,

or release the pressure in the arbor press.

Remove the holder from the maintenance fixture or arbor press.

Lightly oil using DTE-26 hydraulic oil or SAE-30 motor oil or equivalents.

Step 7

Step 7:

Check the inside diameter of the holder assembly, including the keyway, for

obvious signs of damage. Use a soft cloth to wipe away any oil and/or grease that

may be present.

For B-station only: remove the entire assembly from the post. Remove the

MARATHON B-station collar and replace with the Marathon Plus™ B-station collar

(MATE01143).

Step 12:

Reinstall punch and stripper per LIT00594 using Fixture MATE01293 to prevent

damage to holder. Also see LIT00573 for punch and stripper installation and adjustment.
