Adult learning program

Since our founding in 1974, the Adult Learning Program at Literacy Mid-South has served over 22,000 adults. The Adult Learning Program provides basic education and pre-GED preparation to adults reading at or below a sixth grade level. A dedicated team of trained volunteer tutors facilitate one-on-one tutoring and small group sessions to help low-literate adults reach their personal goals — preparing for the GED, obtaining a drivers’ license, completing a job application, or better managing their finances and health — and provide them with the tools necessary to navigate their daily tasks.

The Adult Learning Program utilizes a benchmarking system that efficiently tracks progress made by students and provides tutors with lesson plans and other suggested activities. Literacy Mid-South has also created a mobile app, which is available for free to all volunteers and adult students. The app also features a wealth of resources and a quick progress report form so tutors can easily submit information directly to Literacy Mid-South.

Read memphis project

Literacy Mid-South teamed with Agape Child & Family Services to teach Shady Grove Presbyterian to become adult tutors in Frayser.

The Read Memphis Project is a vigorous six-month certification process facilitated by Literacy Mid-South that creates new community-based adult basic education centers throughout Shelby County. Community partners in the Read Memphis Project expand Literacy Mid-South’s reach and impact by providing vital adult basic education services to at-risk individuals, meeting them where they are in the community and increasing the accessibility of adult basic education. There are currently 10 organizations that have undergone certification. Over this past year, 7 organizations received their certification. These newly certified partners include:

• East End Church of Christ

• Lemoyne-Owen College

• Shelby County Division of Correction

• Refugee Empowerment

• Raleigh Egypt Middle School

• Pretrial Services

• Shady Grove Presbyterian Church

This collaboration allows Literacy Mid-South to more realistically tackle the alarming literacy rates in Shelby County, where one in seven adults read below a third grade level.

The first Annual Mid-South Book Festival took place at the Memphis Botanic Garden on Saturday, September 26th, 2014. The Mid-South Book Festival is Memphis’ premier celebration of literary arts. Free and open to the public, this cultural festival features presentations from best-selling authors, exciting speaker panels, writing workshops, book signings, children’s activities, and much more. Almost 3,000 Mid-Southerners gathered at the Memphis Botanic Garden to partake in all of the festivities. With a healthy mix of local and national talent presenting, a wide range of community partners, and lots of fun activities, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy at the Mid-South Book Festival. Presented by Literacy Mid-South and Homewood Suites, the festival plays a major role in the organization’s mission of creating a community actively engaged in continuous learning. Stay on the look out for the 3rd annual Mid-South Book Festival to take place in the fall of 2016.

Reading Campaign

Each Spring, Literacy Mid-South promotes reading and learning through a citywide reading campaign. The goal of this annual event is to develop a community experience through the reading and discussion of a shared book. In the spring of 2015, Literacy Mid-South hosted a Reading Flash Mob in Overton Park. Also in the spring of 2015, Literacy Mid-South partnered with First Book to distribute 500,000 books to some of their community partners. The goal of the book giveaway was to ensure that children, who need the books the most, can go home with a book. Literacy Mid-South also hosted many celebrity readings throughout Shelby County Schools in the spring of 2015 to help promote the importance of literacy and reading in our schools. Thanks to the genorisity of donors and sponsors, Literacy Mid-South is able to distribute books, supplies, and the promotion of literacy to nonprofit organizations and schools across Shelby County.

Literacy Mid-South is leading a Collaborative Action Network comprised of community organizations, school districts, businesses, and nonprofits. Every year, more than 6,000 students in Shelby County leave 3rd grade incapable of reading at a 3rd grade level. Studies show that 74% of 3rd graders who read poorly still struggle in 9th grade and 3rd grade reading skills can reasonable predict a student’s likelihood to graduate. Literacy Mid-South is committed to leading organizations to improve the rates of reading proficiency at 3rd grade for every Shelby County child.

In the summer of 2015, Literacy Mid-South lead an initiative to provide local nonprofits with a literacy program for their summer programming. Literacy Mid-South also brought in the Southern College of Optometry to the network so that they could provide eye services for the participating organizations’ members. The services they provide range from free eye exams and glasses if necessary. This is pivotal as difficulty with sight is a major physiological barrier to learning.
