AUTUMN EDITION

Dear Readers

Theresa May’s recent campaign to allow for the introduction of new grammar schools into the state education system seems to be faltering, as a recent report from the Education Policy Institute revealed that the Prime Minister’s claim that new grammar schools would help social mobility and boost the life-chances of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those on free school meals, was unfounded.

Mrs May clearly means well and her argument that good comprehensive schools effectively operate a selection by house price may give us pause for thought: in other words, she argues that only wealthier parents can afford to live in the catchment areas of such schools. Wyvern is a proud comprehensive school, serving children of all abilities and families from a

Editorial wide socio-economic spectrum. Living in Wyvern’s catchment area may well have added value to your home, but we serve quite a diverse geographical district so no-one should feel excluded based on income.

As an alumnus of a grammar school myself – the last year group of my northern home town to sit the old 11+ examination – I can tell you that grammar schools in themselves are not a guarantee of academic success or social mobility, but they are potentially divisive. Parents might like the idea of their bright child being positively segregated with other bright children, but in my home county only the top 10% actually got into the available grammar schools – that would equate to only 27 children per year out of Wyvern’s annual intake, for example, whereas over a quarter of Wyvern’s GCSE grades are A/A*. There would be a lot of disappointed bright young things if we had that model here.

What is vitally important of course is a good education.

This is what we must all campaign for: a high quality curriculum and enrichment curriculum (already this term many of our students have been out on a History trip to the Black Country, an English trip to the Globe Theatre, Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions, rugby tournaments, a university taster day and Science field trip), great teaching (Mr Will Emeny received the prestigious accolade of Secondary Teacher of the Year in the UK Pearson Teaching Awards in October) and a thriving campus for young people that is also the beating heart of its community. Thank you to the scores of appreciative parents who have attended our Open Morning tours during regular working days this half-term – please spread the word and continue to support your local secondary school!

Mark Tilling: Wyvern 1988 - 1993

What is your current position?Pastry Chef, Chocolatier and Head of Squires International School.

Where did you experience your primary education? Stoke Park Junior School.

Are there any memories that you would like to share about that experience? I remember a baker (who was a father of one of my classmates) visiting the junior school and teaching us about the methods of baking and patisserie.

What subjects did you enjoy most at Wyvern? Home Economics and Pottery.

Do you have significant memories of your time at Wyvern? Being voted Head Boy which was a great honour for me.

Can you outline your career path since leaving Wyvern? I went to Southampton City College and completed a BTEC National Diploma in Hotel & Catering and NVLQ Level 3 in Pastry. After graduating, I initially worked at the Lanesbrough Hotel, Hyde Park Corner, London and then moved back to Hampshire to start work at Hotel du Vin Winchester, where I was employed on the basis that I would become the Head Pastry Chef at the soon to open Hotel du Vin Bristol. Following this I started working for a chocolate business and my love for the cocoa bean grew! I then worked as Head Pastry Chef at Lainston House Hotel, Winchester and finally

Where are they now?In this edition, we meet Mark Tilling who is a renowned pastry chef and was part of the winning team on BBC2’s Bake Off: Crème de la Crème, and Adam King, who is making a name for himself as a theatre lighting designer. In future articles, we would like to feature: l families where two generations have been Wyvern students l former students who have become teachers l an update on former staff.

If you know of anyone we can approach who fits the above categories, then please do email us at [email protected]. Thank you, Lynda Smith - Wyvern Governor

moved onto my current position at Squires Kitchen based in Farnham.

What pitfalls have you overcome or made you rethink your plans? To be honest I have never experienced any pitfalls in my career so unable to offer any experiences!

What skills, qualities and characteristics do you consider important to having a fulfilling life? Passion, determination and wanting to pass on my skills to other interested parties.

Is there any advice you would give to students today to support them in finding a niche for themselves? I would say follow your passion in a subject you excel at.

What is your current position? Freelance Lighting Designer and Assistant, most recently Assistant Lighting Designer on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (the photo was taken at the premiere) and Assistant Lighting Designer on Bend It Like Beckham.

What subjects did you enjoy most at Wyvern? Drama of course and I really enjoyed PE. I’m not the type of person who likes to just sit behind a desk, hence why I have gone for a much more active career. Though I did recognise how important subjects like Maths and English were.

Do you have significant memories of your time at Wyvern? Wyvern is where my passion for theatre first started so I remember that well. I remember doing the

Adam King:Wyvern 2001 - 2006

productions of Honk and Adrian Mole. I started off acting in them and found that wasn’t for me, so I switched to doing lighting and gave as much time as I could to pursue this.

Can you outline your career path since leaving Wyvern? After leaving Wyvern, I went on to Barton Peveril College to study Drama and Theatre, where I was employed as the Theatre Technician there as well as going to college. From this I went onto Drama school where I got a BA (Hons) in Technical Theatre specialising in Lighting. I then went into West End theatre, where I operated the lighting on the show 39 Steps for three years. I decided to go freelance and concentrate more on lighting design and that’s where I find myself today. Even though I’m out in the industry working, I still feel like I am always learning. There will always be

something you don’t know.

What critical points led to success in your chosen career/s? Passion for what I do. If it doesn’t feel like you are doing a job and you enjoy what you do, it helps immensely. It means you are easily able to put in extra time and effort without it feeling like a burden. We work long hours in theatre and you wouldn’t be able to do it if you didn’t enjoy it.

What pitfalls have you overcome or made you rethink your plans? I’m quite a shy person. I have had to grow out of that, as confidence can go a long way. When you realise you know what you are talking about and people respect that, it boosts your confidence massively.

What skills, qualities and characteristics do you

consider important to having a fulfilling life? I believe you have to be driven. Anyone who is driven can really succeed at what they want to. Being kind and polite goes a long way too, as no one will want to work with you if you are not nice to work with.

Is there any advice you would give to students today to support them in finding a niche for themselves? Find something you enjoy and pursue it whatever it may be. If you are driven enough you can succeed in what you enjoy.

Wyvern’s Annual Careers Fair was well attended again this year, providing Year 11 students with an excellent opportunity to discover a wide range of information on post-16 choices.

The College welcomed new stands from National Grid and EMCOR UK who came along to promote their Post-16 and Degree apprenticeships. In addition, all the local sixth form colleges were available to speak with students and parents, with long queues at their stands. The armed forces were busy promoting the extensive range of opportunities they offer, and Southern Universities Network had a hectic evening encouraging students to think about university options and answering questions about the wealth of courses available in the South.

Annual Careers FairWyvern’s Careers Co-ordinator, Katie Bruce, said,

“A number of the exhibitors commented on how well prepared our students were, which demonstrates how seriously they are considering their next steps in education or training.”

The Careers Fair is an integral part of the College’s careers programme for Year 11 students which includes a series of events and presentations across the year. Students who feel that they would benefit from some additional advice and guidance are encouraged to book a priority appointment with Mrs Bruce.

Thank you to our sponsors:

It is the same every year, you spend 12 months preparing for a race, several hours on the day before the “Ready, Steady, Go….” and then before you know it your first runner is back!

On a damp and/or humid day the starting “gun” was fired by special guests Sarah-Jane Davies and Luke Jones from our chosen charity the Multi Sports Club and we were delighted to welcome back Iwan Thomas again, running with us before setting off to the Rio Games.Liberty Pride Cheerleaders and our very own Steel Pans, led by Louise Parsons, provided great entertainment for our runners and supporters throughout the run.

George King (Winchester & District AC) led the field home in a time of 33:09, followed by second placed Scott Edgington (Itchen Spitfires RC) in 34:45 and third placed Dave Coak (Eastleigh RC) in 35:42. Our first placed woman is now our new course record holder; Jen Elkins (Southampton AC) finished in 37:17. Rebecca Lord (Stubbington Green Runners & AC) was second in 41:06 and third Charlotte Bunch (Eastleigh RC) just behind in 41:37. Club Winner honours were taken by Eastleigh Running Club in both the Men’s (Dave Coak, Andrew White, Jon Osman and Andy Lewis) and the Women’s (Charlotte Bunch, Sonia Rushby and Hayley Chilvers) categories. Wyvern College took the team award. Age category winners were: Senior – Jen Elkins (Southampton AC 37:17) and George King (WADAC 33:09).V40 – Karen Wilshire (Fareham Crusaders 43:49) and John Payne (36:31).V50 – Hayley Chilvers (Eastleigh RC 45:56) and Jon Osman (Eastleigh RC 37:12).V60 – Elaine Grist (Eastleigh RC 59:59) and Martyn West (WADAC 40:48). Our junior winners this year were:15-16 – Masie Truscott (1:03:42) George Kemp (43:45)17-18 – Dominic South (43:52)Masie Truscott and George Kemp are our overall Junior Champions for 2016 and their names will be added to our shield trophies.

This Wyvern 10K was particularly special as it marked the completion of our first Olympic cycle. We have made it from London 2012 to Rio 2016. We could not have reached this milestone without initial help and support from Eastleigh Running Club and then the fantastic partnership we have built with Hedge End Running Club, who have helped us develop so many aspects of the event.

The role of our sponsors has also been vital. HP Contracts, Aspire and Up & Running have supported all five events and we were delighted to have Nick Deas (HP Contracts), Luke Eddington (Aspire) and Kevin Royle (Up and Running) with us for the day. Also attending were Angela Dorrington and Johar Singh from QualitySolicitors Knight Polson whose sponsorship during the past two years allowed us to provide this year’s free race t-shirts. We were also fortunate to have Caterlink and Fyffes provide our water and bananas again.

Lastly, we need to thank our volunteers from RAYNET, Saint John Ambulance, St Thomas’ Church, The Eastleigh Lions, Hedge End Running Club and Wyvern College who have kept all our runners safe and cheered them all the way. They continue to be at the very heart of the Wyvern 10K. All the lovely pictures are courtesy of Paul Hammond, Richard Townsend and Chris Nicholls. They are available for download via our race website (personal use only).

Next year’s event will be on Sunday July 9th and entries should be open in early January.

...and that’s why half of the population hasn’t made one. However, what is often misunderstood is that a Will does a whole lot more than just state who should receive your property and money. Let’s look at exactly what a Will can do in more detail:

Appoint Executors: These are the people that look after the administration of your estate and who carry out your wishes after your death. They have a lot of responsibility, thus you want a trusted family member, friend or professional to do this job.

State Funeral Wishes: You may have a family burial plot, or want a dearly loved song sung at your funeral, and this can all be stated in your Will.

Appoint Guardians: A Will allows you to appoint guardians to look after your children if they are under 18. You can also make financial arrangements in your Will for their benefit.

Give bequests: If you have a ring which you promised your niece, or a picture which you always thought your granddaughter would love, then your Will is the place to make this bequest. You can also give certain amounts of money to, say a friend or a charity,

or even give certain investments to certain individuals.

Protect loved ones: With the modern family unit meaning that remarriages are commonplace, a Will can help you protect children from previous marriages and ensure that they get a share of your estate. It’s important to note that remarriage revokes a Will and makes it completely void so it’s important to make a new Will if you’re considering marriage or have recently got married.

Avoid unwanted beneficiaries: Without a Will your estate will pass by intestacy, meaning that it may not pass to those you wish it to. For example, if you

die with no Will and haven’t a spouse or children then your estate would automatically pass to your parents or siblings even if you’d have preferred it to go elsewhere. It is also very important to make a Will if you are not married to your partner because, by law, they would not be entitled to a share of your estate without one.

Tax planning and asset management: A Will can avoid higher than necessary tax bills for those left behind, or manage your assets on your death to, for example, protect your loved ones and maximise their inheritance.

Avoid bad feeling: Most important of all, a Will can make it easier for your loved ones and friends without the problems, arguments and bad feeling that sometimes accompany an estate administration in the absence of a Will.

YOUR

National Festival of Music for Youth

Wyvern College Arts Festival ReviewAbsolutely fabulous! That was the resounding verdict on Wyvern’s recent Arts Festival which offered something for all tastes with a superb assortment of music, drama, dance and art.

Launching the Festival were Anthony Adams, a renowned Sinatra tribute act, and professional singer Andrea-Lynette Young. They were joined by the Wyvern Community Choir, ex-student Phoebe Shepherd and current student Elijah Jeffery. The audience were treated to a wonderful medley of Sinatra favourites, alongside songs from ‘Westside Story’, Dusty Springfield and the Beach Boys.

The week continued with a step back in time to ‘Shakespeare in the Tavern’; a lively evening of musical entertainment and extracts from Shakespeare plays which were performed amongst the audience as well as on stage, and enhanced by some delicious food from the College’s Let’s Get Cooking Club.

A Performing Arts Showcase was next on the programme, featuring the Hampshire Youth Dance Company, extracts from the College’s award-winning Rock Challenge performance and its forthcoming production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, and Drama students’ work on ‘The Chrysalids’. Local primary school children were undoubtedly the stars of the show in the Primary Spectacular, playing to a packed audience following their vibrant creative Arts Day.

Complementing the evening events, a series of daytime workshops and visiting theatre companies enabled all students to experience and enjoy arts-related activities during the week. Sponsorship was provided by

Hamble Valley Rotary Club and Owton’s Butchers, and creative input from Barton Peveril College, The Point at Eastleigh, Southsea Shakespeare Actors, The

Courtiers Folk Band and Onatti Productions.

All good things must come to an end but what an end! The Summer Concert brought the best weather of the week, superb performances from the highly talented music ensembles and choirs, and Wyvern’s nationally acclaimed Concert Band following their recent success at the Music for Youth Finals. A fitting finale to a fabulous festival!

Wyvern Concert Band enjoyed considerable success recently in reaching the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth held at the Symphony Hall, Birmingham. Only 11 wind bands from across the country made it through to the finals in this category, so it was a tremendous achievement for the band.

Music for Youth is an annual event, celebrating the UK’s most inspiring young musicians. The

finals took place over five days in July, involving over 400 live performances at prestigious venues across the city of Birmingham.

After a long but enjoyable day, Bryan Postlethwaite, Head of Music, said, “This was an amazing experience for all the students involved and they should be extremely proud of their achievement.”

WyvernBook Review

‘The Morality Play’ by Barry Unsworth

The Morality Play is a great book to read at this time of the year as it is set just before Christmas at the end of the 14th century. The Church rules every aspect of life, the Black Plague is taking its toll on the whole population, and there is a mystery to be solved.

It is a brilliant story and a powerful depiction of how drama can change the way we think, about the parts we all play in life and how they can change. It also describes vividly the hardship of life during this

period of history; cold, insecure and hungry.

Nicholas Barber is a young monk who has fled from the confines of a monastery. Whilst escaping, he encounters a group of travelling players on their way to a patron’s castle to entertain the guests with seasonal plays. Nicholas is allowed to join the troupe because they are in need of another actor. As their combined funds are very low, they decide to put on some plays in a nearby village to earn some money. There they discover that a murder has been committed and the woman who has been found guilty of the crime is due to hang in a few days’ time.

The players decide to perform the story of the murder as a way of making a little more money. But as the play is acted out it evolves, and at subsequent performances the truth of what really happened emerges. It’s fascinating to witness the interaction of the audience and the players realizing that the perceived events couldn’t have happened as described by the leading characters in the village. What is also so interesting is the shared culture; the whole audience understands each dramatic gesture as well as the masked characters such as Sin, Mercy or Truth. The ending is satisfying and at the recent Wyvern Book Club everyone loved this book!

Wyvern has recently been awarded AcSEED Accreditation in recognition of its best practice in promoting and furthering emotional wellbeing and mental health support amongst its students.

AcSEED is a charitable organisation promoting the need for high-quality emotional wellbeing and mental health support in UK schools and colleges, and provides an award for organisations that can demonstrate their commitment to such support.

Cheron Macdonald, Wyvern SENCO, managed the extensive accreditation process, working with various staff across the College. To enhance its provision, the

AcSEED AccreditationCollege has trained a number of staff in emotional First Aid, developed and jointly run a Mental Health Project for 19 local schools, established a dedicated mental health and wellbeing policy, delivered assemblies on mental health stigma, and run Mental Health and Wellbeing conferences for staff and parents. In addition, the College is able to provide access to counselling and a trained Mental Health Youth Worker.

On receiving the Award from Wyvern’s Headteacher Alan Newton, Mrs Macdonald commented: “We are delighted to have achieved this award which recognises the wide range of advice and support we are now able to offer our students in this key area”.

Some great ideas for books to give as Christmas presents:

My Brother is a Superhero by David SolomonsThis funny, action-packed, award-winning book is perfect for reluctant readers as well as anyone else who wants to be a superhero. Luke is outraged when his brother Zach is made a superhero by some passing aliens, especially as, unlike Luke, Zach has never read a superhero comic in his life.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler An intriguing book with an unusual narrative style. What has made Rosemary’s family so unhappy? Rosemary reveals the whole story in a series of flashbacks, (which we guarantee you won’t guess).

Flawed by Cecelia Ahern (13+)Terrifying, pacey and thought provoking. This well-written, young adult, dystopian novel is reminiscent of The Hunger Games and is a compelling page turner. In a society where perfection is valued more than humanity, Celestine pays the price for an act of kindness and now must fight for her survival.

Monsters by Emerald Fennell (13+)Highly recommended for both boys and girls. There is a lot of dark humour. The reader really shouldn’t like the two main characters, (who have an unsavoury interest in murder), but you can’t help it.

The Road to Little Dribbling by Bill BrysonYou know what you are going to get with Bill Bryson, and this is classic Bryson. Very funny, informative and affectionate about Britain.

White Storm by M G HarrisBen Carrington is a member of an elite, top-secret rescue organisation: Gemini Force. This is the third in the series. An exciting adventure begins when Ben has to rescue a group of politicians from an avalanche.

The Benefits of Weight Training Cardiovascular exercise on machines such as treadmills and exercise bikes burns more calories than lifting weights, so is it just a waste of gym time to add strength training to your workout? The simple answer is no. Working your muscles as well as your heart and lungs can improve your health and help you drop a clothes size faster. I only exercise to lose weight and get thinner. I can burn far more calories doing light cardiovascular work than heavy lifting; shouldn’t I just stick to the treadmill? While cardiovascular exercise is a great way of burning the fat, adding a little strength training to your workouts will earn you extra calories every day. You’ll even be burning extra calories while you’re sleeping or sitting on the couch watching EastEnders.

Aerobic exercise may burn a few hundred extra calories for dinner, but for every additional pound of muscle you gain, your body burns around 50 extra calories every day of the week. Research has shown that regular resistance training can increase your Basal Metabolic Rate by up to 15%. So for someone burning 2000 calories per day, that’s a potential 300 extra calories, more than a Mars bar, burned every single day. Do not be disheartened if initially you seem to be staying at the same weight or gaining slightly. Muscle weighs more per square inch than fat, so whilst your weight might not be dropping very quickly, your clothes are feeling baggier and you are seeing a healthier, slimmer and better toned you in the mirror. That’s far more important than anything those nasty scales have to say, any time. Is weight training right for women? I loved Terminator, but being 5ft 6in and female, I’m not sure Arnie’s muscles would suit me?Weight training is just as suitable for women as it is for men. Many women are wary of taking it up for fear that increased muscle means increased masculinity, this is not the case. Testosterone is a very important factor in the development of muscle shape, so as women have very low levels of this hormone, their muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will not lead to a bulky, butch physique. I’m not getting any younger, shouldn’t I just stick to low resistance exercise to avoid injury? No, in fact building a little extra muscle

can actually reduce the risk of injury. Strong muscles, tendons and ligaments are much more capable of withstanding stress, and the improved flexibility gained by strength training also reduces the likelihood of pulled muscles and back pain. Weight training is an excellent way of combating several symptoms we all face as we get a little older. Resistance exercise can reduce bone deterioration and build bone mass, preventing osteoporosis. Working your muscles can also inhibit the affects of sarcopenia, the age related loss of muscle mass, strength and function. After the age of thirty there is a loss of 3-5% of muscle mass per decade, making day to day tasks gradually harder to perform and slowing down metabolism - increasing the risk of weight gain. How can weight training make me healthier?Recent research has shown that weight (or resistance) training can greatly reduce a number of health risks. It has been proven to have a positive affect on insulin resistance, resting metabolism, blood pressure, body fat and gastrointestinal transit time, factors that are linked to illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Why am I still reading this and not starting my new stronger, fitter, healthier and happier life right now?Good point. Research shows that just two 15-20 minute sessions a week is enough to gain all the potential health benefits of strength training.

I’m not talking about lifting 100 kilos above your head or chest pressing the weight of a bus. Start slowly and work your way up. Even using tins of baked beans as makeshift dumbbells or using light ankle weights is a good start. Over the course of your sessions, use exercises that work all the muscle groups and do 8-12 repetitions. Be sure to use a suitable weight so that the last rep really feels like hard work. Don’t overdo it and make sure that you leave a day or two to recover in between sessions. Muscles grow while resting, so pushing yourself as hard as you can seven days a week won’t do you any favours.

NutritionThe importance of combining diet and exercise is crucial to both our health and well-being. Also, combining the two successfully can propel you to achieving your goals at a much quicker rate. No matter what your goal is, you must ensure that your daily calories are tailored specifically to you and that these calories are made up of the right combination of macronutrients: proteins, fats and carbohydrates. None of these food groups should be avoided, however each individual will require a different make up of these foods within their diet depending on the individual and the goals they have. Your diet and training programme should then complement each other, with your training programme containing the right volume, exercises and training methods for you as an individual and again the goals you have. Therefore, it is highly important to ensure that you don’t let a bad diet ruin a fantastic training programme and vice versa. Wyvern Sport and Fitness have the tools available to ensure that you are on track to achieving your goals from today!

THE SCHOOL REPORTDURLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL

FAIR OAK INFANT SCHOOL

A Great Start to Durley School’s Sporting SeasonDurley School had a great sporting start to the school year with the whole school taking part in their first sponsored family fancy dress fun run. The younger children started with a fancy dress parade and photoshoot followed by a run or jog around the school field collecting a sticker for each completed lap. Children at Key Stage 2 completed a more challenging route across the fields opposite the school through a woodland area and round the golf course before returning to the school field for more laps. The children and adults looked fabulous in their fancy dress outfits and we were pleased to be joined by children staff and

families from the Durley Ladybird pre-school. As well as raising money for the new school cookery room, the accompanying cake sale alone raised nearly £200 for Macmillan Cancer care.

We were particularly thrilled with our girls’ football team this term, who won the area football tournament playing against some very large schools in the locality including Berrywood, Botley and Shamblehurst. The girls managed to win all of their group matches - not letting in a single goal even in the nail-biting penalty shoot-out final against Fair Oak. We wish them luck for the rest of the season.

Around the World in Thirteen ClassesFair Oak Infant School has just welcomed one hundred and twenty new learners into Reception; there are now four hundred children on role. As a school we aim for children to become successful learners, confident individuals and international citizens.

Internationalism is regularly promoted through the curriculum which has been recognised by the British Council through their International Schools Award. Global awareness is promoted through classes that are named after different countries. Children in Reception find out about the

United Kingdom and quickly recognise the different flags of the four countries. Year One classes are named after European countries and Year Two after countries further around the world.

At the start of each school year children research their class country by finding capital cities, recognising flags, discovering the languages that are spoken, food that is eaten as well as similarities to their own country and lives. The children have shared their learning with their parents and friends in class assemblies.

We have recently celebrated European Day of Languages. Throughout the day different languages were used, children found out how ‘hello’ was said in different European countries. Wyvern College supported their learning when Year 8 students visited as extra teachers. They

used their language skills to prepare games to play with the children teaching colours, animal names, sports and much more. The Infant School children were inspired and amazed that many of the students had been in their class when they were younger.

As a school, we will continue to promote and celebrate diversity by forming links with

other schools around the world. Currently we have made links with schools in Myanmar and the Netherlands.

FAIR OAK JUNIOR SCHOOL

THE SCHOOL REPORTUPHAM CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

At Upham, the children (and parents) always look forward to our Christmas productions but drama work is also a vital part of learning across the school year. In the Summer, children in Class 4 (Years 5 and 6) performed ‘Pandora’s Box’. Not only did this help them understand more about the Ancient Greeks, but also enabled them to apply their speaking and listening skills to re-tell the story.

Engaging Learning What a fantastic term we are having! The children settled really well into the new academic year. We are really glad to welcome our new Year 3 children (and parents) into the Fair Oak Junior School family, as well as our new members of staff. I am especially happy to be the interim Headteacher and am looking forward to continuing the work of the school, so that our children make the best possible progress, as well as

becoming confident, caring and respectful members of the community. Already this term we have enjoyed a space dome, visits from the Fire Brigade, a Victorian day, plus so much more. The engaging learning doesn’t stop there. We have visits planned to the Hindu Temple, Winchester Cathedral, the Nuffield Theatre as well as visitors coming in. This is all in addition to our exciting curriculum - shared with our parents at the recent curriculum evenings. Recently, we held our Annual Fun Run. It was great to see so many parents supporting the children, as well as many

The other classes in the school all watched these older children perform, as did their parents, grandparents and families. Everyone really enjoyed it and said how fabulous Class 4 were. We also held a charity collection

after the performance so that the children could choose how the money they had raised could be used.

In our small school, we always ensure every child takes part

and every member of the class had speaking parts on stage. This ensures that everyone is part of the production and fully involved.

members of staff (and parents) joining in too! Thanks must go to our PSA for supporting this event and for putting so much effort into organising the fundraising calendar for the year.

THE SCHOOL REPORTSTOKE PARK INFANT SCHOOL

STOKE PARK JUNIOR SCHOOL

Forest School comes to Stoke Park Infants School The benefits of outdoor learning have been recognised for many years. Forest School is inspired by a Scandinavian approach to pre-school education.

Pupils at Stoke Park Infants School will be visiting Stoke Park woods throughout the year and will notice seasonal changes, particularly observing changes in plants, trees and wildlife.

During early visits to the woods the children will familiarise themselves with the environment. Expectations and routines will be established and pupils will be taught how to manage risk and stay safe in the woods.

The range of activities will be very varied and will be related to the current season. Mid-session the children will return to the log circle for a snack and a drink. When the children are experienced ‘Forest Schoolers’ they will light a fire and cook outside.

Year 1 and 2 pupils have taken part in the first Forest School sessions with enthusiasm. They have been fascinated by the different textures they’ve found around the school grounds. Particularly the prickly sweet chestnut shells and the leathery and spiky horse chestnut shells, which surround the much enjoyed conkers. We’ve come up with Forest School names and made wooden pendants with these on. The pupils were very taken with the story of the Forest

dragon and have developed the story and made friendship bracelets out of dragon’s breath to symbolise our responsibility to look after the woods and one another.

Minibeast Explorers! In Year 4, we have been learning all about minibeasts in our school grounds. We ventured outside on a minibeast hunt, visiting different areas of our school grounds to see what we could find. We then brought them into our classrooms and sketched them using oil pastels. The grand finale of our minibeast hunt was the much

anticipated snail racing! Each table had their own snail to race against others, although none of them went anywhere fast! We also explored our school pond, to see what creatures were lurking in the depths beneath! We had a great time pond dipping off the two jetties and identifying all the different creatures that we found within the pond, even if we did need our wellies and coats to combat the weather.

Year 6Year 6 have started their year looking at the Vile Victorians. They have been comparing the life of a Victorian child to those of today. Life for the rich and poor was very different and Year 6 have looked at this in great detail. The children have had the chance to look at a range of Victorian artefacts as well as dress up in Victorian rich and poor clothing. Part of the topic included re-creating a Victorian classroom where the Year 3 children were the pupils. It’s safe to say that our Victorian teachers were terrifying while they demanded that the

children recite the alphabet and times tables. The Year 3 children also had the opportunity to write with chalk on a slate.

Wyvern is delighted that Will Emeny, Maths Curriculum Leader, has been awarded the prestigious accolade of Teacher of the Year in a Secondary School in the UK Pearson Teaching Awards 2016.

After receiving the superb Gold Plato Award from presenter Sian Lloyd, Will said, “I am so humbled and excited to have received this award. Wyvern College is a brilliant school and I am so grateful to all the colleagues who have supported and developed me as a teacher over the years. Most importantly, thank you to the students past and present; your hard work and commitment to your studies inspire me to be the best teacher I can be for you each day!”

Year 9 students certainly made the most of the opportunity to live with a host family during the annual French Exchange, where they spent a week experiencing life in the French capital. Their visit began with a trip to Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur, with fantastic views over the city. At the Musée de Montmartre, where Renoir lived for a period of time, students participated in an art workshop, painting in the Impressionist style and recreating Renoir’s painting ‘La Balançoire’. They then spent time wandering the cobbled streets, shopping, and even having their caricature

French Exchangeportraits done by modern-day French artists. Students also enjoyed visiting a traditional French market, renowned for its range of organic produce, and the Tour Montparnasse and the Arc de Triomphe. A variety of experiences were organised by the individual host families including visiting famous sites by night, attending the ballet, enjoying French cuisine, and experiencing the wonders of the Palace of Versailles. Parc Asterix was the destination for a joint visit with their exchange partners and the week finished with a tour of the impressive Stade de France.

A month later, students welcomed their exchange partners to Wyvern. As well as taking part in tutor time and assembly which they are unfamiliar with, the French students visited the New Forest, Lyndhurst, Portsmouth Historic Dockyards and the Spinnaker Tower, and spent an action-packed day with their English partners at Marwell Activity Centre. Great commitment from all the families on both sides ensured another successful exchange and some fantastic memories for all those who took part. Photos of the art workshop, the Stade de France, and the view from the 7th floor of the host school!

National Award for Wyvern TeacherSelected from thousands of nominations, Will was awarded one of just 55 Silver Awards in June and joined fellow winners for a celebratory tea at the House of Commons. He was announced as overall winner in the Secondary Teacher of the Year category at a glittering ceremony at London’s Guildhall in October.

Will is passionate about his students achieving their potential and also believes in the sharing of best practice. To this end, he developed Numeracy Ninjas, a programme of work based on extensive research, and has made it freely available so that it is now used in thousands of schools across every continent in the world.

Alan Newton, Wyvern Headteacher, said, “Will is a ‘force majeur’ in Maths teaching and his leadership of learning. Rarely have I come across someone so talented, yet so selfless and generous with his gifts. We are so proud of him and I can think of none more deserving of an Award of this kind!”

Farewell to Desborough! The Desborough Road building has been an integral part of the Eastleigh College estate for many decades, and some ex-Wyvern students may even remember it originally being part of Wyvern! In recent years, the ground floor has used been for Hair and Beauty courses and upstairs, Art and Design have made the best use of the large, airy spaces for exhibitions and studios.

Sadly, the building can no longer be maintained without major outlay, such as replacing the roof, the heating system and the windows; none of which is cost effective. The building also does not suit the range of modern courses now on offer at Eastleigh College. The land including the old school building is up for sale and the site has outline planning permission for housing. Options for converting the building to flats also proved to be cost prohibitive and so it is due to be dismantled and recycled during 2017.

Students will move across to the main Eastleigh College campus into state-of-the-art facilities. Although looking forward to the move, students and staff were also keen to mark the historic moment by including it in the Art and Design ‘Elsewhere’ exhibition.

This is especially important in the approaches to Wyvern, Fair Oak Junior School and Fair Oak Infant School to keep the community safe. There are currently 5 volunteers. With more active volunteers they would be able to be out more regularly. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer please contact us and we will be able to put you in touch with the organiser.

We would encourage you to use the “Park and Stride” schemes wherever possible, which are located at The Clock Inn, Sandy Lane and The Lapstone, Botley Road. We would also like to inform you of the following parking guidelines and remind you to be considerate of other road users, pedestrians and residents: - Do not park within 10 metres of any junction. - Do not park on corners. - Do not block driveways or public access roads - Do not block the pavement. Crime Prevention With the winter months now here, bringing with it darker evenings, we are once again promoting our “Winter Time means Lights On” campaign. Please consider the following advice:

leaving a couple of lights on in your home will help to make it look occupied.invest in some timer switches. These can turn lamps and radios on and off for you.gadgets are available which fit into bayonet light fittings which will turn your main lights on and off.help keep your energy bills down by using energy saving lightbulbs.thieves are more likely to target homes which look unnoccupied.secure your home by locking all doors and windows when you go out.only tell the people who you trust if your home will be empty for a period of time.now you have made your home more secure, please tell your family and friends!

You can find lots more crime prevention advice on our website www.hampshire.police.uk

The annual European Day of Languages celebration provided Wyvern students with a host of opportunities to explore different languages. Assemblies had an international flavour, looking at travelling abroad, alongside the richness and diversity of different cultures.

Visiting teachers, David and Diana Snuggs, engaged students with lessons on Russian and Hebrew. Year 9 students were challenged to learn a few words of Russian and also enjoyed a general knowledge quiz on Russia.

European Day of LanguagesThe Hebrew lessons included mastering traditional Hebrew dances, and coming to grips with a language that amazingly has no real vowels!

Languages teachers delivered taster sessions of different languages and students who are native speakers of a language other than English taught their peer group. Other departments also incorporated a language theme into their lessons to mark the day. Philosophy and Ethics examined the Arabic used by Muslims in Europe and its similarities with Spanish. English

explored language etymology and Maths devised activities that incorporated the language being studied by each year group. In Technology, students looked at European designers and products, and words used in their subject with a non-English origin.

The Library also contributed, with a display of books written by foreign authors or set in a different country. Year 7 students were encouraged to read one of these and write a book review, or to design a poster to mark the day, with prizes awarded for the best entries. An

international menu was on offer in the College canteen and the weekly Fountain Café served a selection of internationally inspired bakes.

The week finished with Year 8 students preparing and delivering short lessons in French to Year 1 classes at Fair Oak Infant School. This was a valuable experience for all those involved and a really positive end to an inspiring week.

Wyvern students had a fantastic insight into the world of sporting media recently, joining a number of other schools for the Hampshire Cricket Press Day at the Ageas Bowl.

Hosted in the Shaun Udal suite with stunning views across the ground, the day began with an informative opening session from Simon Walter, Daily Echo Sports Reporter. He outlined his career path into journalism and the wide range of skills needed to be an effective sports journalist, as well

Ageas Bowl Press Dayas providing some top tips on how to carry out a good interview. Following on was Hampshire Cricket’s own Press Officer, Jamie Hopkins, who summarised his role and emphasised how voluntary work experience had helped him to secure his dream job. The morning continued with practical activities where students learnt about writing for different audiences and the key elements of a press article.

Each group was then allocated a Hampshire Cricket player and worked against the clock

to research their player and compile interview questions. It was then over to the pitch to carry out the player interviews and get a few photos and autographs! During the afternoon, students started to draft their articles; the best one from all the schools attending will be selected for the Hampshire Cricket July Match Day Programme. Wyvern students will also see their work published in the College’s ‘Sporting Times’ publication. Mr Dickinson, Trip Leader, declared, “This was a great opportunity for students to meet

media professionals and to interview sports personalities. Students conducted themselves extremely well and certainly made the most of the experience”.

Concluding the day, students were treated to an impromptu behind-the-scenes tour including the VIP stand, training nets, and the control room which is the hub of the ground for any match or event.

Wyvern’s Mock Interview Day is an important part of the College’s Careers programme for Year 10 students, providing them with the chance to experience a one-to-one interview of 10-15 minutes with a member of industry. For some students, this is the first formal interview situation that they have encountered and acts as useful preparation for interviews that they will attend for post-16 college places in Year 11.

The day relies on volunteers from industry to undertake the interviews and this year the College was fortunate to welcome experienced interviewers from companies

such as British Gas, Santander, The Co-op, the NHS, Hampshire County Council, Hendy Ford, Clarke Willmott and local colleges.

Commenting on the event, one interviewer said, “The students I interviewed were of a high quality and were a credit to the College. I was impressed with their confidence and enjoyed the day immensely.”

Students’ feedback was also very good, indicating that the process had given them more confidence and also highlighted any areas that they needed to work on for future interviews.

Mock Interview Day

A group of Wyvern Year 10 gifted and talented students had the opportunity to experience a day at Oxford University last term. Part of the College’s

careers programme is to raise students’ aspirations and to increase awareness of the wide range of opportunities available post-16, and this was the first in a series of university visits.

In the City of Dreaming Spires, students were given a tour by a current undergraduate studying at the University, taking in the sights of the many colleges and the distinctive architecture such as The Bridge of Sighs and Radcliffe Camera. This was followed by an in-depth tour of St Edmund (Teddy) Hall, one of over 30 colleges within the University, including the beautiful grounds and chapel. The day continued with an

interesting and interactive psychology taster session which gave students an insight into what academic study at Oxford could be like.

Oxford University Experience Wyvern’s Careers Co-ordinator, Katie Bruce, commented, “This was an inspiring event which I hope dispelled some myths about who can apply to and study at this prestigious university.”

Sweet JarI have a jar of sweets. There are 234 red, 26 blue, 67 green and 63 yellow sweets. What chance do I have of picking a blue one with my eyes shut?

Answer: 1 in 15. Since there were 390 sweets in the jar and 26 of them were blue, the chances are 26 in 390 = 1 in 15 = 6.66%.

SSE Women’s FA Cup Final A group of Wyvern students had a superb opportunity to experience elite sport at the SSE Women’s FA Cup Final in May. Taking place at

Wembley Stadium, the match was contested between London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. A spectacular first-half goal by Arsenal’s Dan Carter resulted in them lifting the trophy for the 14th time in front of a record crowd of over 32,000.

It was a day of firsts for many of the students: the first professional football match that some had attended, the first FA Cup match for others, and a first visit to Wembley Stadium for many of them. The aim of the trip was to raise interest in women’s football

Wyvern Short Mat Bowls Club has been established since 1995 some 21 years ago from members of the Fleming Park Bowls Club. We are a friendly club and play in the Dance Studio at Wyvern College, Botley Road, Fair Oak, Eastleigh, SO50 7AN every Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and Saturdays from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

Short mat bowls is based on the outdoor sport of lawn bowls so many of the rules are adaptations of the rules of the outdoor game, with the basic aim being to deliver as many woods (bowls) as possible nearer to the smaller target bowl (the jack) than any of the opposition’s woods. We play on mats 45 long by 6 feet wide

In addition to our twice weekly meetings members can, if they

wish, play in friendly matches against other local clubs over the winter season. Annually members are invited to join us on our trip to Warners Hotel, Bembridge, IOW every April on a four-day bowling break.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced player or looking to try this form of the game for the first time, you can be sure of a warm welcome, so why not take that first step and get in touch? It is recognised as an ideal game for the older generation of which most of our members are, however we welcome anyone to join. If you are interested in joining us we offer three free trial sessions, please come along and meet us.

Or contact Eric Wright on 023 80 693 490 for more information.

A carnival spirit ran through this year’s Sports Day at Wyvern, as the whole school enjoyed a variety of colourful, Rio-themed activities linked to the 2016 Olympics, before watching the College’s young athletes taking part in the annual track and field events.

Students learnt about the original values of the Olympic and Paralympic games which include courage, determination, equality, excellence, friendship, inspiration, and respect. Some groups then researched the Rio Carnival, its costumes, music and traditions. Others discovered more about participating Olympic countries including their past successes, best events, potential stars of 2016, and the people’s celebratory traditions. There was also a creative element to the day

Rio Carnival Sports Day

as students were encouraged to make a flamboyant carnival mask or headdress, a banner of the Olympic values, or a decorative country flag. Some students also learnt samba drumming, whilst others picked up a few samba dance moves.

The culmination of their work was a multi-coloured parade, giving a vibrant feel to the trackside and spurring on the athletes taking part in the sporting events.

and to inspire those who participate in the College’s Girls’ Football Team.
