Prison Ministry Conference:

Reimagining Justice in the Age of

Mass Incarceration

Monday, Mar. 5 – Wednesday, Mar. 7. A conference sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and Prism Restorative Justice. Featured presenters: The Rev. Gregory J.

Boyle, and Sister Helen

Prejean. Mass incarcer-ation ranks high among the injustices of our day, splitting families and communities, perpetuat-

ing racism, and failing to deliver the very thing it promises: justice. What does true justice look like in our current con-text? This conference will study that question from a multifaceted

perspective, looking at diverse approaches to jus-tice. Prioritizing the voices of formerly incarcerated people, those working on the front lines, and those whose ideas challenge our preconceptions of what criminal justice looks like, this conference will bring new perspectives for those who have long been working against mass incarceration and for those new to the struggle. Fiction Fun! Reads The House of Mirth

Friday, Feb 23, 7:30 p.m. in the Guild Room. The February selection is The

House of Mirth, by Edith Wharton (1905), another of the Modern Library’s hundred best. As she would say in a preface to the book three decades later, it portrays “New York society in the nineties,” a “little hot-house of tradition and conventions”—at a time when “these traditions and conventions were unassailed, and tacitly regarded as unassailable.” Information = Jamie Hebert at 626.583.2765 or [email protected].

Jazz Vespers: Carol Robbins

Sunday, Feb. 25, 5:00 p.m. on the Chancel. Born in Chicago, Carol

Robbins grew up in Los Angeles, where piano lessons at an early age inspired her to experiment with jazz improvisation. By age eight she was studying harp and eventually became one of the handful of students ever accept-

ed by the late pioneering harpist Dorothy Ashby. One of the world’s few jazz harpists, Ms. Robbins has recorded and performed with an eclectic variety of artists including Billy Childs, Manhattan Transfer, Brian Wilson, Linda Ronstadt, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. She has performed at the Hollywood Bowl with many artists, including Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. Susan Russell offers a meditation. Childcare provided. If you would like to use the chancel elevator for accessibility, please arrive five minutes early. There is no charge. No reservations required. Validated parking is avail-able at Plaza las Fuentes. Information = Melissa Hayes, 626.583.2725 or [email protected].

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is a way of sharing the sacred journey of our lives with another person. A trained spiritual guide can assist an individual in developing a deeper relationship with God, and in helping to discern the ways in which God is leading them. If you are interested in finding a spiritual director you may leave a confidential message at 626,583.2755 and the intake coordinator will call you to schedule a meeting.

Preaching Series

All Saints Church A Season of Wisdom & Revelation

Epiphany is a season where the wisdom of sages reveals God to us in new and powerful ways. Throughout history, those sages have been found among those most marginalized and oppressed. In Epiphany, it is particularly important for us to seek out those voices, to invite them to speak their truth, to listen fearlessly and to heed their words.

At All Saints Church, we are committed to dismantling the structures of patriarchy and white supremacy that enslave us all. An important step in that direction is centering the voices of women and people of color and following their wisdom and leadership. That is why we are declaring Epiphany, 2018 ?A Season of Wisdom and Revelation? where we will only have women of color in our pulpit on Sunday mornings and we will be shaped and led by the Gospel they preach.

The lineup includes nationally-renowned preachers and theologians, members of our own congregation and youth ... prophetic voices all. Don?t miss a Sunday ? and please invite everyone you know to be a part of this life-changing season.

Sunday Book Groups:

Lenten Book Group - Los Cuatro

AcuerdosBasados en la antigua sabiduría

Tolteca, Los Cuatro Acuerdos

ofrecen un poderoso código de

conducta que puede transformar

rápidamente nuestra vida en una

nueva experiencia de libertad,

verdadera felicidad y amor. Based

on ancient Toltec wisdom, The

Four Agreements offer a powerful code of

conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a

new experience of freedom, true happiness, and

love. Sundays, 12:00 ~ 12:45 p.m. Guild Room.

Vivian Varela

Lenten Book Group - The Very Good

Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be

Made RightThrough careful exploration of

the biblical text, particularly the

first three chapters of Genesis,

Lisa Sharon Harper shows us

what “very good” can look like

today—in real time. This group,

organized for African American

women, will engage Lisa Sharon

Harper’s text The Very Good Gospel, where

she explores the deep theological concept

of Shalom. Sundays, 1:00 ~ 2:30 p.m., OCC

Conference Room. Renatta Cooper

Monday Book Groups:

Lenten Book Group - Nonviolent

Communication: A Language of LifeWhat is Violent Communication?

If “violent” means acting in ways

that result in hurt or harm, then

much of how we communicate

could indeed be called “violent

communication.” Nonviolent

Communication shows us a way

of being very honest, without any

criticism, insults, or put-downs,

and without any intellectual diagnosis implying

wrongness. Mondays, 7:00 ~ 8:30 p.m.,

Learning Center 2. Terry Moore

Lenten Book Group - Drawdown: The

Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to

Reverse Global WarmingIn the face of widespread fear and apathy,

an international coalition of researchers,

professionals, and scientists have come together

to offer a set of realistic and

bold solutions to climate

change. If deployed collectively

on a global scale over the next

thirty years, they represent a

credible path forward, not just

to slow the earth’s warming but

to reach drawdown, that point

in time when greenhouse gases

in the atmosphere peak and begin to decline.

These measures give us every reason to see this

planetary crisis as an opportunity to create a just

and livable world. Mondays, 7:00 ~ 8:30 p.m.,

Learning Center 1. Bob Whitson

Tuesday Book Group:

Lenten Book Group - The Book of Joy:

Lasting Happiness in a

Changing WorldNobel Peace Prize Laureates

the Dalai Lama and Desmond

Tutu have survived more than

fifty years of exile and the soul-

crushing violence of oppression.

Despite their hardships—or, as

they would say, because of them—they are two

of the most joyful people on the planet. This

book offers us a rare opportunity to experience

their astonishing and unprecendented week

together, from the first embrace to the final

good-bye. Tuesdays, 7:00 ~ 9:00 p.m., Scott Hall

4. Betty Cole

Wednesday Book Group:

Lenten Book Group - Seven Last Words:

An Invitation to a Deeper Friendship with

JesusFor all who have “ever felt

confused, abandoned or alone”

are the words that welcome you

to the book, Seven Last Words

Susan Adkins

Thursday Book Groups:

Lenten Book Group - Ferguson and Faith:

Sparking Leadership and Awakening

CommunityThe shooting death of Michael

Brown in Ferguson, Missouri,

reignited a long-smoldering

movement for justice. Seminary

professor Leah Gunning Francis’s

interviews with more than two

dozen faith leaders and with the

new movement’s organizers

take us behind the scenes of the continuing

protests. Ferguson and Faith demonstrates that

being called to lead a faithful life can take us to

places we never expected to go, with people

who never expected us to join hands with them.

Thursdays, 7:00 ~ 8:30 p.m., Scott Hall 5.

Mary Bucci Bush & Edna Trigg

Encounters in NatureUsing Florence Williams’ book

The Nature Fix as a jump-

ing off point, we will explore

evidence of Divine Creativity

and Intelligence in the

natural world. From trees that

communicate to plants that

have short term memory and hummingbirds

that fly 800 miles without stopping we will

seek evidence of the Great Mystery in Nature.

Our homework? To get outdoors and let nature

be revealed to us. Thursdays, 7:00 ~ 8:30 p.m.,
