Lights Set The StageThe drama of the jungle at night is enhanced by subtle moonglow lighting, designed by British consultant Simon Corder, who created the luminary mystique of The Phantom of the Opera musical in London.

A Revolution In Zoo DesignThe concept of an open safari-type park with free-ranging nocturnal animals was revolutionary at the time when Night Safari opened. Most zoos worldwide open only during the day, but our creators saw that Singapore’s climate offered the ideal opportunity for people to witness tropical mammals at night, when they are most active.

Over the years, the park has been at the forefront of wildlife conservation, adopting innovative approaches to conservation science, partnership and research.

To celebrate our 18-year anniversary, we unravel 18 intriguing facts on one of the world’s famous attractions.

In 1994, the world’s 1st Night Safari officially opened its gates, bringing people closer to the wild & wonderful world of nocturnal animals.

Our First ExhibitThe Fishing Cat Trail, featuring this wonderful wildcat as well as many of Singapore’s native animals such asthe common palm civet and slow loris, was the very first exhibit built at Night Safari.

Driving Without LightsOur tram captains drive without their headlights on so as not to disturb the animals. They rely on their excellent night vision, fine-tuned manoeuvring skills, and special road markings for a safe journey through seven different geographical zones, from the African savannah to the jungles of Southeast Asia.

Pangolin FirstsNight Safari is home to the world’s first Sunda pangolin exhibit, and is also the first zoological institution to breed a Sunda pangolin in captivity. This successful breeding effort paved the way for Night Safari to kickstart a captive breeding programme. This scaly anteater is one of the few large mammals found here in Singapore.

Wild Feast For The SensesThe Gourmet Safari Express is the first-of-its-kind tram dining experience. Modeled after the Orient Express, this award-winning dinner features fine cuisine prepared by onboard chefs and served by waiters who cater to your needs as the tram meandersthrough the park’s lush setting.

Baby BoomAs part of our conservation efforts, we have successfully bred numerous threatened and endangered species, including Malayan tigers, Asian elephants, fishing cats, red dholes, Malayan tapirs and Asian lions. In 2011 alone, the park saw more than 200 animal births.

Fostering CivetsMany common palm civets, a species native to Singapore, were rescued from the wild and brought to Night Safari. Keepers served as their foster parents, caring for them so that they could be released back into their natural habitat. The civets also inspired the creation of an exhibit at the Fishing Cat Trail to educate visitors on these native creatures.

Early AdvertisingOne of the first few advertisements for Night Safari was a simple, black and white comic illustration in The Straits Times, highlighting the park’s features. Since then, the park has grown, and its advertisements – now full-colour and elaborate – demonstrate how the Night Safari has since developed into a modern, world-class conservation facility.

Distinct Eye-dentityThe most striking feature of our highly recognizable logo is the wide blue stare that seems to peer at you from the dark. These are the familiar and friendly eyes of our nocturnal animals, hinting at the mystery of Night Safari and glowing with the promise of a moonlight adventure.

Treasure TroveNight Safari recently unveiled its new entrance with a retail space modeled after Southeast Asian “kampongs” (old villages). Under the rustic wooden and attap roofs, you’ll find a treasure trove of mementos of your Night Safari adventure, from glow-in-the-dark t-shirts to adorable plush animals.

The Winning "FLUSH"Our commitment to creativity is clear in every way – even in our toilets! Night Safari topped the Best 5-star Happy Toilet category in 2010 (awarded by Restroom Association of Singapore) with its African-themed open concept toilet in the East Lodge. This family-friendly facility blends the aesthetics of the outdoors with the practicality of baby changing tables and children’s potties.

A Fiery BeginningEnter the Night Safari and you’re immediately greeted by Thumbuakar human torches. These talented fire-blowers can exhale flames up to five metres high! Watch carefully and you’ll see how they keep the flames about six inches from their mouths to prevent getting burnt.

Star Cast Of AnimalsOur presenters keep the animals in the Creatures of the Night Show happily in line through positive reinforcement, such as food treats in association with certain behaviours. Presenters only showcase the natural behaviours of the animals, like the binturong’s (bearcat) amazing ability to balance on trees.

Frozen In TimeThe animal specimens at the entrance look so life-like because they were once alive and have been taxidermised for educational purposes.

Starry NightsUsually our visitors gaze at the stars when they come to the Night Safari, but once in a while, the stars visit us too! Since the park opened, various dignitaries and celebrities from around the world have made the Night Safari one of their must-visit destinations. These included singer Katy Perry, actor Ethan Hawke, and runner Carl Lewis.
