LIVE OUT THE GOSPEL OF MERCY Gospel of Mercy’? A consecrated one not only experiences and lives he mercy of God, but also must necessarily be merciful because this is at the centre of the Gospel. Declaring the extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy - begunon 8th December 2015 and ends by 20th November 2016- Pope Francis said, “I am convinced that the whole Churchwill be able to find in this jubilee, the joy of rediscoveringand making fruitful the mercy of God with which we are allcalled to give consolation to every manand every woman of our time.”

God’s tender loving mercy is Hisresponse to human misery. The greaterthe misery is, the more abounding themercy. God saves and redeems us notbecause of our merit, but because Heis merciful. The earth is full of the mercyof God(Ps 32:5; 118:64). God ismerciful and compassionate becauseHe is just; He keeps His word. Provincial’s Desk........ Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the closing of the II VATICAN COUNCIL, Pope Francis has gifted theChurch with an extraordinary JUBILEE OF MERCY so that we may become MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER.

Customarily known as the parable of the prodigal son – one among the three cases of being ‘lost and found’ inLk.15 - this third parable in a way expresses the essence of divine mercy. The behaviour of the prodigal son’sfather reveals to us God the Father who is “faithful to the love he has always lavished on his son.” The parabledirectly touches on every breach of the Covenant, every loss of grace, every sin. Before he returned, the prodigalson had lost not only his natural goods, but also “his dignity as a son in his father’s house.” Through this parableChrist shows us mercy as love that is “able to reach down to every prodigal son, to every human misery, andabove all, to every form of moral misery, to sin.” The person who is the object of mercy is “restored to value” andreinstated.

Through the three parables in Lk 15, Jesus defends his own position and the gesture of offering pardon to theemarginated people. At the same time he also reveals the true face of God on earth. God has revealed Himself asthe force of a love that saves and creates. In all the three parables there is great joy in finding what was lost: thelost sheep, the lost coin and the lost son. In all the three parables, the protagonists - the shepherd, the womanand the father - are not preoccupied with what was not lost, but very much with what was lost. Jesus thusteaches that God’s way of acting with sinners - His lost children - is analogous. For God, the just are not enough;in fact He is not preoccupied with them. On the other hand, He is deeply concerned with those who are in danger. This love of God justifies the attitude of Jesus and of the Church in dealing with the little ones, the emarginated, the sinners and the outsiders.

The parable expresses the dramatic situation in which human beings find themselves as a consequence of theirrejection of God’s proposal. We are not happy with the life we lead, we want to be different; we want to get outof ourselves and become someone else; we want to be free. The parable helps us to understand how these desirescan be fulfilled only by returning to God. It helps us to see more clearly what happens in our life and to discoverthe drama of our that mercy show to me!” reality: the human being is unhappy because he lives in a far away

country”, far away from God. Left to himself, he goes farther and farther, dissipating his resources: this isthe drama of sin. Human beings are incapable of solving by themselves this drama. At this point therevelation of God becomes fundamental: if the misery of man is deep, much deeper is the love and mercyof God. The history of salvation is nothing but the repetition to God’s attempt to make human beingsunderstand His love, and to snatch them away from their desperate situation.

God’s mercy to human beings means His compassion, kindness, pity, clemency, forgiveness, understanding, leniency, benevolence, gentleness, grace, mildness and meekness. Human beings shouldalso show to one another charity, compassion, mercy, kindness, pity, sympathy, clemency, forgiveness, understanding, leniency, benevolence, gentleness, mildness and meekness.

Jesus teaches us very clearly, “Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy” (Mt 5: 7). Mercywelcomes, mercy accepts, mercy respects, mercy is generous to a fault, mercy supports, mercy forgives, mercy provides, mercy does all that is urged by kindness and love. Dear Brothers: In fidelity to our call,Let’s live out the Gospel of Mercy! It is fitting, therefore, to pray with poet Alexander Pope:

“Teach me to feel another’s woe, to hide the fault I see, that mercy to others I show that mercy show to me!”

GOD OF MERCY IN JESUS OF NAZARETHthat places in evidence the universal dimension of Christianlove; it is not limited to a sublimation of love in thecircumstances in which this sentiment is expressed. The firstfocuses on the duty to love enemies; the second part is aninvitation to overcome every condemnation directed againstothers. In Christian love the boundaries constituted byfamily, friendship, race, language region, nationality, religion, etc., are no more barriers because in Christ love expandsbeyond any barrier. Christian love reaches out to welcomeand help also the enemy, the adversary.

The text contains two conclusions. The first isanthropological and is defined as the code of conduct inseeking one’s own good: “Do to others what you wouldhave others do to you”(v.31). In the second, of atheological nature, the reality of God becomes a decisivemodel: “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful”(v.36).

The passage we are considering takes centre of the messageof Jesus and reveals to us the true meaning of God and ofhuman life. Judaism taught a justice according to which eachperson has to be treated according to his or her works. Inthe dialectic of Marxist revolution is included thenecessity of overcoming (or destroying) the enemy, to reacha final harmony. In the politics of the world, the interests ofthe minority groups are often sacrificed. People in generallove others in a self-centered way, that is, only if these otherrepresent a value, a benefit or an advantage for them.

What a variance with the prevailing social norm! Incontrast to all these, the Gospel of Jesus has offered usa clear and powerful ideal: “Love your enemies!” Onlythe duty to sow the seeds of goodness, to love withoutlooking for a response, to give without expectingrecompense, to exchange good for the evil received -only this duty is absolute. The love taught by the Gospelof Jesus does not consist in the quest for personalfulfillment; it consists in the sacrifice of giving one’s lifefor others. God the Father loves people to the point ofgiving his beloved Son to them in order to save them, and that is the model for Christian love.

Nailed to the cross, Jesus cried to the Father, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what theyare doing” (Lk. 23:16). On the cross, the love of Godthe Father, which in Jesus Christ intercedes for sinners and

INTRODUCTION: Mercy is genuine love for any personwho is suffering and unhappy in any way. The eradicationof misery is the visible and essential aspect of mercy.According to St. Thomas Aquinas, when love and miserymeet, there is born mercy which is one of the essential formsof charity, situated in the very heart of Christianity (SummaTheologiae 2a, 2ae 30). Mercy is the virtue that leads aperson to make a genuine effort to relieve misfortune ofothers, whatever is its form. Mercy is the best way to fulfillthe second Commandment to love our neighbor, which is“like the first” (Mt. 22:36-39). God explicitly says, “Idesire mercy, not sacrifice”(Hos. 6:6; Mt. 9:13).

The whole purpose of the presence of Jesus among men, according to the New Testament, was to reveal God tothem. Nobody from among men has ever seen God, yetwe have a desperate need to come to know our God. It isJesus who makes Him known: “No one has ever seen God;the Son who is turned in loving union towards the Father,he has made him known”(Jn.1:18).

However, like a thunderbolt, here comes the new preceptfrom Jesus of Nazareth: “Love your enemies, do goodto those who hate you… Do to others what you wouldhave others do to you. If you love only those who love you, what credit can you claim?...No! Love your enemies anddo good to them… Be merciful, just as your Father ismerciful”(Lk. 6:27-37/Mt. 5:38-48). What a tall orderfor adherence and what an ethos for compliance …?!

A MERCIFUL FATHER REVEALED IN CHRISTAs he begins his public ministry he announces: “My food isto do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish hiswork”(Jn.4:34). At the conclusion of his ministry, speakingin the context of the Upper Room as if everything hadalready been accomplished, he prays to his Father: “I haveglorified thee on earth, having accomplished the work whichthou gavest me to do”(Jn.17:4). Just what was this ‘work’of Jesus, which he felt that he had somehow ‘accomplished’?He explains it himself as he prays to his Father: ‘Thou hastgiven (the Son) power over all flesh, to give eternal life toall whom thou hast given him. And, this is eternal life, thatthey know thee, the only true God”(Jn.17:2-3). The taskof Jesus was to make God known, or in our theologicalterminology, to reveal God.

1. A CASE OF COUNTERCULTURE: “Love yourenemies, do good to those who hate you.” Here is a passage

enemies and accomplishing gestures of goodness, we areliving as children of God who is benevolent and kind evento the ungrateful and the wicked.

Christian love is merciful to all; it does not judge or condemnanyone; it pardons all enemies and offenders. It does notharm enemies but helps them and takes trouble to turn themround and make them friends. The fact that God becameman when man was running away from God and acting asGod’s enemy, has introduced a hard, penetrating anddemanding word: love for enemies!

Love for enemies is therefore not something marginal; itis the very sense and centre of Christian love. Only whenwe give without expecting any return, when we lovewithout looking for any merit in the other, when we areready to lose so that the other may gain - only then havewe arrived at participation in the mystery of love Christhas taught us.

Love for enemies is mercy in its most challengingform. It calls for a deep conversion, for acquiring a newmentality. It demands something more than courage orgoodwill. It demands truly becoming “children of God” (Lk.6:35) who is benevolent to the ungrateful and thedisobedient. St Paul reminds us, “When we e were Hisenemies, God reconciled us to Himself through the deathof His Son” (Rom. 5:10).

CONCLUSION: We are to be merciful just as the Fatherin heaven is merciful. God comes in search of man whobecame His enemy - to seek and save him. It is theexperience of this infinite mercy of God that enables a manand his enemy to set free the living fountain of love betweenthem and to establish a healthy and happy relationship witheach other. The vital understanding and the experiencing inone’s own flesh what it means to be loved gratuitously whenone is on all fronts an “enemy” of God, can generate withinthe person the free and joyful courage to love one’s enemies,to forgive those who hurt, to pray for those who persecute,to love those who hate and to bless those who curse.

Here is a notable quotation from Gautama the Buddha:“He has outraged me and beaten me; he has deprived meof everything and defeated me: in the one who casts awaythis thought from himself, the spirit of hatred will disappear. In this world enmity cannot be overcome by enmity. Onlylove can put out hatred and this law will stay for eternity”(Dhammapaada).

loves the enemies, is free from every form of doublemeaning, surpasses every limit of blood relationship ornationality, politics or natural religion, every form of socialjustice, to reach out to all and in all. Christ conquers heartby loving, triumphs over evil by pardoning, because in lovefor enemies lies the divine promise of victory over enemies.

2. GOSPEL OF MERCY - LOVE THY ENEMY:Having been crucified with Christ, we are also called to thesupreme act of love: to love our enemies and to pray forthose who persecute us. That is how we realize in ourselvesthe justice of God and heavenly perfection.

Love for enemies is therefore not a moral act or anexaggerated affirmation of Christ; it is the ultimate, supremedemand that specifies the following of Christ; it is thenecessary characteristic of a genuine Christian. It is anextraordinary respect for others, perfectly normal for anyperson who has been clothed in the justice of God in Christ.Jesus, and Jesus crucified, is the extraordinarylove of the Father and Creator for the world. Andthe Christians, crucified with Christ in obedience tohim, live in this extraordinary love. “For God so lovedthe world that he gave his only Son, that whoeverbelieves in him should not perish but have eternal life”(Jn. 3:16).

Love for enemies, therefore, is a requirement for beingChristian. Christianity is not something ordinary orcommon. What is specifically Christian cannot be reducedor limited to love for one’s country, friendship or service toothers. Divine “justice” cannot be exhausted in civil justice(see, Mt. 5:46-47). What is ordinary is common to all anddoes not specify the Christian. The spirit of Christ differsradically from the spirit of the world. As DietrichBonhoeffer says, what is Christian is realized notwithin natural data but going beyond them.

The Christian is called to the perfection of the heavenlyFather (Mt.5:48). It is certainly impossible for anyone toarrive at such perfection through moral or asceticalcommitment because the comparison is with the “Father inheaven”. No effort however dedicated can bring a personto that height. Yet, what is impossible can become possibleif it is given; it can be received as a gift.

Luke the Evangelist rises above the problem of perfectionand speaks about goodness and mercy (Lk. 6:36). By loving

CONSECRATED LIFE TO FOLLOW CHRIST - Bro. Sleeva Reddy

In His infinite mercy, one day Jesus turned to each one ofus and asked, personally: “Come follow Me”(Mk.10;21).If we are here, we answered Him ‘Yes’. Sometimes it wasan adherence full of enthusiasm and joy. At other times areluctant one, perhaps uncertain. Nevertheless, we followedHim with generosity, letting ourselves, led on ways that wenever imagined.

We shared with Him, moments of intimacy: “Come awayand rest a while”(Mk.6:31); Moments of service and mission:“You give them something to eat”(Lk.9:13); Even His Cross: “ If any man would come after Me, let Him take up HisCross”.(Lk.9:23). He introduced us in His own relationshipwith the Father, He gave us His Spirit, He dilated our Heartto the measure of His own, teaching us to love the poorand sinners. We followed Him together, learning from Hisservice, hospitality, forgiveness and fraternal Charity. OurConsecrated life has meaning because remaining with Himand going on the roads of the Word, taking Him, confirmsus to Him, makes us, be Church, gift for humanity. Everyconsecrated person has had the possibility of having aclearer perception of one’s identity. And thus launch intothe future with renewed apostolic ardour, to write new pagesof goodness, in the wake of the charism of our founders. We are grateful to the Lord for all that He has given us tolive in this year so rich in initiatives. Remain faithful to thecall received and to grow in Love, in gift and in creativity.

Pope Francis has given us 3 important tenets to befollowed as Consecrated persons. They are : 1.Prophecy. 2. Proximity. 3. Hope:

1. Prophecy: It is your special call. What prophecy doesthe Church and the world awaits from you? You arecalled first of all to Proclaim, with your life even beforeyour words, the reality of God; to speak of God. Ifsometimes, He is rejected and marginalised or ignored,we must ask ourselves, if perhaps we haven’t beensufficiently transparent, to His Face, showing instead, our own.God’s face is that of a Father “Merciful andgracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfastlove”(Ps.103:8). One must have a personal relation withHim to make Him known and one needs the capacity toadore Him, to cultivate friendship with Him, day afterday, through heart to heart conversation in Prayer, especially in silent adoration. Prophesy is to tell peoplethat there is a way of happiness, of grandeur, a way that

fills one with joy, which is precisely the way of Jesus.Prophesy is to say, that there is something that is moretrue, more beautiful, greater, more good to which weare all called.

2. Proximity: In Jesus, God makes Himself close to everyperson. He shared in the joy of wedding at Cana inGalilee, the anguish of the woman at Nain. He took uponHimself the sicknesses and sufferings, giving His life inransom for all. To follow Christ means to go where Hewent, to take charge, as the good Samaritan, of thewounded we meet on the way, to go in search of thelost sheep, like Jesus to be close to the people, to sharetheir joys and sorrows, to show with our love, thepaternal face of the Father and the maternal cares of theChurch. May no one ever feel distant, detached, closedand hence sterile. Each one of us are called to serve theBrethren following one’s Charism: One with Prayer, onewith catechesis, one with teaching, one with care of thesick or the poor, one proclaiming the Gospel, one withcarrying out different works of Mercy. What is importantis not to live for oneself, as Jesus did not live for Himself, but for the Father and for us.

Consecrated persons must not distance themselves frompeople and have all comforts. No they must get close tounderstand the life of Christians and non-christians, thesufferings, the problems, the many things that areunderstood only if consecrated person gets close, inproximity. Consecrated life should lead to the closenesswith people: Physical, spiritual closeness to know thepeople. “Who is the first neighbour of a Consecratedperson? The Brother or the Sister of the community. Listenwell. No gossip, no terrorism of gossip, because, onewho gossips is a terrorist. He is a terrorist in his communitybecause he throws a word, like a bomb against this, against that and goes away tranquil. He destroys. In thisyear of Mercy, each one of you succeeds in never beinga gossip terrorist, it would be a success for the church, asuccess of great sanctity! Be courageous!”

3. HOPE: “Witnessing God and His merciful love with thegrace of Christ, you can infuse hope in this humanity, marked by different motives of anxiety and fear andtempted, sometimes to discouragement. You can, makefelt, the renewing strength of the Beatitudes, of honesty,of Compassion; the values of goodness, of a simple life,

full of meaning. And you can nourish hope in the Church.I confess to you that it costs much when I see the drop invocations. I ask you: In the face of this drop in vocations, does your heart, pray with this intensity? When thecongregation sees, it doesn’t have children and grand –children and begins to be ever smaller, it attaches itself tomoney. And you know that money is the devil’s dung. And thus there is no Hope! Hope is only in the Lord”!

MONTFORT – THE MYSTIC(Part - 3)

In our daily apostolate, what counts most is the capacity torepeat the initial ‘yes’ to Jesus’ call, which continues to befelt, in a new way, in every stage of life. May His call andour answer, keep our hope alive. Living this, we will havejoy in our heart, which is a distinctive sign of Jesus’ followers. And our life will be attractive for so many men and women,to the glory of God and the beauty of Christ’s bride, theChurch.

INTRODUCTION: Jesus proclaimed, “I and the Fatherare one” (Jn. 10:30) showing the world what the union ofGod and man can be. Christian mysticism is all about thistransforming union. Christ is the sole end of Christianmysticism. Whereas all Christians have Christ, call onChrist, and can (or should) know Christ, the goal for theChristian mystic is to become Christ – to become as fullypermeated with God as Christ is, thus becoming like him, fully human, and by the grace of God, also fully divine.

1. Divine Love Revealed in Christ: The mysteriouspassion that impelled God into the folly of the IncarnationMontfort recognized as love. This knowledge changed therepresentation he had of God: from the Almighty Lord to theloving Father. This became the central point of his experientialknowledge of God. With Paul and John, he discoveredthe “central factor” of the mystery of God, which isrevealed in Christ Jesus: namely the love of God.

2. Wisdom and Cross: In Wisdom and the Cross are foundthe Pauline vision of mystery. The Cross of Christ is thedefinitive revelation of the Wisdom of God, who wills thatsalvation be accomplished in Christ crucified(1Cor. 1:24).Montfort concentrates Pauline thought into this one point:WISDOM is the cross and the cross is the WISDOM(LEW 180). And after maturely reflecting on the love ofWisdom for the cross, which culminates in the “marriage inblood” on the Cross (LEW 171), he says: “Never the Crosswithout Jesus or Jesus without Cross”(LEW 172). But thisWisdom is Wisdom in mystery, accessible only to those towhom God had revealed “the greatest secret of the EternalWisdom” (LEW 167, 174; FC 26). This discovery isaccomplished in faith. To those who welcome the Word ofthe Cross in the obedience of faith, this secret of Wisdom isrevealed before their eyes as the culminating point of thelove of God(LEW 154), while human and earthly wisdomis revealed as dangerous wisdom, precisely because it strips

the Cross of its essential content(LEW 174, FC 36).

Thus Montfort describes in all its cruelty the agony of theCross - he describes even to the least details what Christ hassuffered on the Cross (LEW 154-166) - but at the sametime, he recognizes that precisely in that is reveled the excessof love of God. The Cross is no longer the expression of theanger of God but the proof of his love(LEW 176) that is whyMontfort is able to take up again the symbolism of espousals, when he has Wisdom declare: “I love the cross with all mystrengthen and I place it in the midst of my heart so that itmay be my spouse and my mistress”; and the suffering ofWisdom culminates in the marriage of blood on the Cross. The presentation of the “triumph of eternal wisdom in thecross and by the cross” (LEW 14; H 19; H 102) permits theJohannine vision of the Cross to shine through, in which theCross is the true revelation of the glory of God (LEW 170).

3. Surrender to CROSS: Surrender, abandonment, evento extremes, became for Montfort the principle of life. Forthe Cross is not only the objective reality of salvation; it isnot only and simply object of kerygma. It is the preciselythe “Word of the Cross”, which took flesh in Jesus Christ.Montfort already recognizes the mystery of the Cross inthe mystery of the Incarnation (LEW 169). It is not “nomatter which” Christ who becomes man but Christ crucified. It is the incarnation view of the agony of the Cross, andbecause of that the entire life of Christ is situated under thesign of the Cross. The only model of Christian life (LEW173; FC 19) is therefore Christ in his voluntary humblingand nothingness, the model of life that Paul presents inPhil 2 (LEW 16-17). And, Montfort makes this the themeof FC. In explaining the word of Jesus , “Whoever wishes tobe my disciple, let him renounce himself, take up his Cross, and follow me” (Mt. 16-24; Lk. 9:23), he shows howChristian life is completely situated under the mystery of theCross. To be Christian, to become like unto Christ, to be

conviction. It must become an authentic experience of faiththat leads to belief.

Today, perhaps more than ever the past, what Karl Rahnerhas pointed out as the only key to sustain our religious faithfor our times carries true relevance: “the man of tomorrowwill be a mystic, someone who has experienced God,or else he will no longer be religious.” Montfort hadsensed the importance of the mystical experience, ofincomparable importance when the faith is at stake. Iftoday the most important mission of the church mustbe that of preparing the road toward this experience, then the “little mystical way” of Montfort appears nowand always as such a path - for you and me and for alltrue believers. - (Source: Jesus Living in Mary)

In otherwords, Montfort – following Paul-says: to become a slavewe must knowingly and willingly follow the example of JesusChrist, the suffering Servant of God (TD 18, 72-73, 139).This means nothing else than to welcome the cross in ourown lives, permitting it to become the determining forceof our lives, letting ourselves be crucified with Christ(1 Cor. 1:18-31; Gal. 6:14; LEW 173; FC 19).

4. Christ in us - the Goal/Centre of Montfortspirituality: “The perfect friend of the Cross is a true Christ– bearer, or rather, another Christ” (FC 4). This is theexperience to which Paul gives witness: “If I live, it is nolonger I but Christ who lives in me”(Gal 2:20; FC 4), for,the mystery of God that has been revealed in Christ crucifiedis at the same time the mystery of “Christ in you, the hopeof glory” (Col. 1:27). This mystery of “Christ in us” isprecisely at the heart of the thought of Montfort. Whetherhe speaks to “union with Christ”(TD 120), “the acquisitionand the conservation of Wisdom”(LEW 14), “theconsecration Jesus Christ”(TD 120), or “the prefect renewalof the vows of baptism” (TD 120), it is always a matter ofChrist in us, of this Christ who has come to pitch his tentamong us, which is the fruit of the grace of Baptism. Themissionary effort of Montfort had as its object to open theentry to “Christ in us” in such a way that this living presenceof Christ in us becomes a tangible experience.

CONCLUSION: In the pluralism of ideologies in thepresent world, Christianity can no longer pretend to be theonly one presenting an absolute meaning and valid responseto the fundamental question of life. This does not contradictthe claim of having absolute truth, but it does not obligeeach Christian in particular – and the Church – to make itsreligious conviction plausible. This can only succeed whenfaith finally becomes a personal decision.

Now this is exactly the preoccupation of Montfort. Withhis spirituality of Consecration to Jesus Christ through Mary, his goal is precisely to lead the Christian in his life and hisfaith to a conscious decision, responsible and personal. Theeffects of this Consecration, as Montfort has described themon the basis of his own personal experience, can be summedup in the two key phrases “transcendence of self” and“authenticity”. They are the fruits of a faith that becomesever more profound, more conscious, and more constructiveof personality. This process can only succeed if the qualityof the sense of the faith itself becomes for the believer a

the students, alone can shape, form and mold the personality of theirwards. The biographers of St. Louis Marie de Montfort remind us thatafter establishing the Charitable Schools at La Rochelle, he used to regularlyvisit the schools in order to train the teachers to be effective educators. There is no doubt that being an educator is both a privilege and aresponsibility. As Kothari Commission of India powerfully stated, “Thedestiny of a nation is being shaped in her classrooms”. Those of us whohave been classroom teachers will vouch for the fact that a lot of learningtakes place through observation and imitation, and therefore unless weeducators and parents are role models for our youngsters, we can becomecounter witnesses. That is why Ralph Waldo Emerson warns us, “Whatyou are shouts so loud in my ears, I cannot hear what you speak!” As thehead of institutions since 1980, it had been my constant endeavor toremind the teachers about this unquestionable reality. If the love of thestudents and love of the subject are the two ingredients of a good teacher,as reiterated by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, I feel confident to say thatI did possess a good measure of these two qualities. As a Religious Educator,I had this only goal, “To train our boys and girls to be physically fit, intellectually rounded, emotionally mature, spiritually orientated and sociallyresponsible citizens of the country”. I am always indebted to all the Brothers, fellow religious, and the lay collaborators who have contributed towardsthe fulfillment of this noble goal.

A Jubilee is doubtlessly an opportunity to Recall, to Rejoice and to Renew! As Pope Francis had invited the consecrated persons to do during thecourse of the Year of Consecrated Life, it is a time “to look at the past withgratitude, to live the present with passion and to embrace the future withhope”. As I go down the memory lane, I have every reason to raise myheart in thanksgiving for the countless blessings I have received from Himthrough different persons and events and sing with the Psalmist, “Whatmarvels the Lord worked for us; indeed we are glad” (Ps. 125:3). I haveno hesitation in saying that what I am today is gratuitous gift of God.What I have become is thanks to the love and affection, care and concern Ihave received from my parents and relatives, from my confreres all throughthese 50 odd years, from my colleagues, my students and their parents, during the 30 plus years that I was engaged in the education ministry of theCongregation. At this moment, I echo the sentiments of Maya Angelou’soft repeated statement: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you madethem feel”. As I mentioned during the Golden Jubilee celebrations inHyderabad on 2nd January 2016, I owe a debt of gratitude to theCongregation of the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel for all theopportunities I was given and all the encouragement and support I hadreceived during the past half a century. For all these, with a grateful heartI say “DeoGratias”! (Rev. Bro. John Kallarackal)

50 Years in Religious Life – A Gratuitous GiftAs I sit down reminiscing the 50 golden years I have lived as a consecratedperson, I am reminded of what Albert Einstein had once said, “There aretwo ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The otheris as though everything is a miracle”. That the year of my Golden Jubileein the Congregation of the Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel coincides withthe Tercentenary of our Congregation, the Year of Consecrated Life in theChurch, the 300th Death Anniversary of St. Louis Marie de Montfort, ourFounder, and the Jubilee Year of Mercy marking the 50th anniversary ofthe closing of Vatican II, is doubtlessly a kind of miracle, offering meendless opportunities to raise my heart in thanksgiving for the gratuitousgift of my call to be a Religious. The exhortation in Art 1 of our Rule ofLife, “Rejoice, rejoice and render thanks to God your Father, for He hasdone marvels in you”, assumes greater significance in my life today thanever before!

The poet Alfred Tennyson could not be more right when he said, “You area part of all that you meet!” It is only common knowledge that thefoundation for one’s personality is laid during the first 6 years of one’s life.I had the joy of being in a family of 5 boys and 3 girls living at Elavoor, aplace close to Angamaly in Ernakulam District, Kerala and this childhoodexperience had great influence on the kind of person that I grew up into.Being the youngest in the family, I was a recipient of lots of love from myparents and siblings, which in turn contributed to my trait of being aperson who is sensitive to the feelings and needs of others. I never get tiredof repeating the words of Stephen Grellet, pregnant with wisdom: “Iexpect to pass through this world, but once. Any good thing, therefore I cando, any little act of kindness I can show to my fellow creatures, let me do itnow. Let me not defer it or neglect it; for I may not pass through this worldagain”.

Privileged to be living in a family located close to the Parish Church andwith my parents who were faithful to the daily Eucharist, I had developedclose ties with the Church activities. Being an ‘altar boy’ at a very youngage and being close to the priests and religious of the parish sowed in methe desire to be a missionary. Though I was first selected to join theSalesian Apostolic School, the then Parish Priest discouraged my parentsfrom sending me to a far off place because of my young age and relativelypuny stature! Finally, it was more by accident than by design that I joinedthe Montfort Brothers of St. Gabriel with a couple of others from myParish, all of whom subsequently abandoned Religious Life. Persons likemy Juniorate-cum-Novice-Master, Bro. Charlie Darling, Bro. Eugenius,my first Headmaster in Coonoor, did make a deep impression on me as ateenager.

Coming to my mission as a Religious Brother, I literally took to heart theideal that was placed before me in Art 63 of the Rule of Life: “Your activeshare in the evangelizing mission of the Church as a Brother of SaintGabriel, lies in the privileged field of education”. I have always carried theconviction that we, consecrated persons, are an integral part of the Churchfulfilling the triple mission of the Church, i.e. Evangelization, Witnessingand Human Promotion. Pope St. John Paul II’s exhortation that educationcontinues to be the most potent means of evangelization, even where noother means of evangelization is possible, further highlights the importanceof the education mission in the Church. Experience has reinforced myconviction that competent and conscientious teachers wield tremendousinfluence on the hearts and minds of the students.

As a young educator, I was fortunate enough to have had several rolemodels like Bros. Vincent, Paul of the Cross and Thomas Aquinas ofrevered memory, who proved to me beyond doubt that teachers of initiative, commitment and compassion, teachers who are dedicated to the welfare of

was to become a missionary. Gradually this desire grew more intensewith the passage of time as I was inspired and strengthened by the lifehistory of Saints, learned through stories heard from catechism classesand from my parents, specially that of the life of St. Francis of Assissiand St. Francis Xavier, the great missionaries..And, added to all thesewas the inspiration from the regular family prayer! My father used to bethe first one to be present for the prayer. I don’t remember a single daygoing to bed without saying the routine family prayer. This strong andstrict practice of prayer life also helped me to choose this way of life. One day I heard from my father saying a Father, a missionary had cometo recruit students to mission. I expressed my desire to join. The nextday I went with my father to meet that missionary. It was none otherthan Bro. Stanislaus. It was 11th may 1960. After a short interview heasked me to get ready soon so as to travel to Coonoor by 13th Mayinstant. My experience as as TeacherFormator/Local Superior : I enjoyedmy missionary activities as a teache,r mostly with middle school children. My favourite area of interest in the past was to be a Formator. But in thecourse of history(time) I lost the race, because the upcoming trends thenrevealed that the qualified and trained abroad could do better for thisdomain. As a Golden Jubililarian: Fifty years have passed. When I look back,I have a great feeling of satisfaction and contentment within my heart. This does not mean that those years were very smooth. But in everysituation I felt the hand of God guiding me – both in joys and sorrows. His presence made a difference in my life to carry on with my apostolateand religious life to my satisfaction. My message to Young Brothers: My message is “ Desire not, you willnot be disappointed.” Desire is the root cause of all troubles. Hard workand selfless service in the mission entrusted to us. As I mentioned aboutmy own experience within my family, let me assure you that creating aprayerful atmosphere in our communities shall be a guarantee for anauthentic, happy and joyfully life for all of us as religious.

many things and people I would like to thank. My life has been a uniquegift from God. My life journey has been a beautiful one to cherish.Having known myself with a gentle disposition, always believed thatone must accomplish and not boast. Success becomes real if achievedwithout usurpation. With the inner power empowered by God, guidedby Mother Mary, following St. Montfort’s example life has been anever forward march. With my little simplicity and the discipline, whichwas inculcated in the congregation with the age old saying ‘bloomwhere you are planted’ has helped me to do my best in every taskassigned to me.

6. Message to young Brothers: Take interest in yourself and buildyourself for the future mission. Cultivate regular reading habit andconcentrate on personal discipline. Be enthusiastic, supportive andlearn from your Brothers in the communities. Be quick to appreciateand slow to criticize. Thank You!

SHARING BY REV. BRO. HRUDAY KUMAR REDDY

1) My family, place of birth and early education: My father’sname is Thirumala Reddy Gyan Reddy and my mother’s name isThirumala Reddy Lourdu Mary. I praise and thank the Lord Jesus, forthe gift of life he has given to me, through my parents. I was born atKachenapally in Warangal district. Telangana State. I have one elderbrother by name T. George Reddy and a younger brother by name T.Jaya Mohan Reddy. I had my early and primary education up to 7th Std.in CSA Sisters’ School in my village.

2) My call/vocation and my inspiration: When I was studying in 7th

Std. Brothers came to our village and they met all the students, whowere studying in 7th Std. and spoke about the vocation camp and thesociety and took all our addresses in a piece of paper. In the month ofApril, we received a letter from St. Gabriel’s High School, Fathima Nagarto attend for the vocation camp. I attended the camp which was for threedays. We had a personal sharing with the in-charge Brother of the camp.I was very much thrilled to see the selection letter after 10 days of myarrival to home. I joined in juniorate and completed my studies in St.Gabriel’s High School, Fathima Nagar.

3) My experience as a teacher/educator: As a teacher and educator, Ilearned so many things from various groups of students. I always planmy lessons and try to explain with some activity, the important aspectsof the lesson. I learned to listen to the questions and ideas of studentsand I always think of giving opportunity for the students to explaintheir point of view and correct it, if necessary in the beginning itself.

4) My experience as a local superior / director: My experience asa local superior and director was not a bed of roses - there were so manyups and downs, as a traveler, to walk in the path of St. Montfort. EveryBrother is unique and talented in different ways, so some times it isdifficult to understand and live with, when there is a difference of opinion.I have had at times mixed experiences during my community animation, but as a Superior I should not harbour negative attitude towards othersand hence started praying more for the community members and staffmembers during such occasions.

5) As a Silver Jubilarian: My heart is overwhelmed, with gratitudeto God for giving a mission to be a brother to one and all, through thesociety of Montfort brothers of St. Gabriel. When ever I am in problemor difficulties, I always go to my brother Jesus and tell him my problem.I have felt so much of consolation with the assurance from the Bible(2quotes): “My grace is sufficient for you”; “Fear not, I am with youalways.”

6) My message to young brothers: Be strong in faith and render servicein the best of their capacity. God will definitely bless you abundantlybeyond all measures. “Seek the kingdom of God and rest of it will beadded unto you”. We need to spend more time for prayer, which is thegreatest source of inspiration, to quench the spiritual thirst of each one’sneed. Be of good cheer to all, and fervently spread the message of loveand light of Christ in and around us, with our limitations and capacities.

K.K Thomashad come to Mangalore for vocation Promotion and visited my house.I had just completed my VII Std. and was preparing to join highschool. Meanwhile my elder brother Hubert was already in ourcongregation in the initial stage of formation. I had not made anyplans until Bro. K.K. Thomas visited my house. Only then I showedsome inclination and finally reached Kazipet. When I was writing myX exams, my juniorate master Bro. N.F Joseph gave me not so happynews that my elder brother Hubert left the congregation from theNovitiate.

3. Teache /Educator: It has been my pleasure to be a teacher in differentschools that I was privileged to work. I did my teaching with realPassion. I remembered every student of my class with his / her name.I learnt a lot from my students and fellow teachers. “Whatever worthdoing at all is worth doing well” and “the last impression is the lastingimpression.” These two quotes have left an indelible impression onme so much that today whatever I do, I would like to do it well andexpect the same from my students.

4. Local Superior : As a local Superior I tried my best to do my jobwell. Certain times I found it difficult to be exemplary in spiritualmatters. Wherever I was, I found the members of my communityvery cordial and understanding. All the same religious leadership isreally challenging !

South Perú including ‘TITIKAKA’ the highest and largestlake in the world. I was staying with the CMI communitiesand also visited all their mission centers in that part of thecountry, including a few of the famous pilgrim centers. Whilereturning, our bus collided with a lorry while overtaking it.The side where I was sitting was completely damaged andmy companion, a CMI priest was very badly injured andanother passenger who was sitting in front of me got killedon the spot. Fr. Eldo is still under treatment and cannot yetwalk. By God´s grace and protection, nothing happenedto me; I am grateful to God for giving me another chance tolive and serve Him.

I have been informed by Bro. Ángel, the Provincial of Spain, that as most of the Brothers in Spain are aged and so it isvery difficult for them to continue this mission in Perú . Assuch they have decided to close down this community bythe end of this academic year i.e. December2016. The samehas been informed to the Fe y Alegria CentralAdministration. So this community will have a life of another10 months more. By January next, will end the presence ofBrothers of St. Gabriel in Fe y Alegria and also in Perú. It isa sad thing, but there is no other alternatives. I should beback in the Province by the end of next January.

Due to a natural phenomenon called ‘ EL NIÑO ’ thatoccurs once in 10 or 12 years due to the increase of thetemperature of the Pacific waters along the Peruviancoast, the world is experiencing extreme climaticconditions this year. Perú too is going through very baddays due to its effect: heavy rains, flood, mud slides, temperature rise, etc. We can see the river flowing fullwith muddy waters coming from the hills. The country isalso preparing for the election of a new President whichwill be in this April. The people do not see a proper andhonest person to this highest seat of power. Each of theaspiring candidates have their hidden motive: to rob thecountry and its people and to make as much money aspossible. Kindly pray for the people of Perú.

The community wishes all our Brothers a Happy andJoyful Easter. Just as a grain of seed has to die to bringforth new life, so also it is through suffering and death onecan experience new life/the Fullness of life. May theRisen Lord wipe away every tear from our sufferingand persecuted innocent brothers and sisters all over theworld!
