Importantly, biodiversity conservation in developing countries has its own set of challenges. Not only are there natural issues, such as climate change and climate variability effects, but many local communities rely on the natural resources they harvest and hunt in these areas. In these situations, it is especially important to ensure the management plans and technologies are considerate of community needs and capacities, and are endorsed by the affected communities. IIPMB in collaboration with Gol -GEF-UNDP India High Range Mountain Landscape Project is attempting to preserve, conserve and manage biodiversity by mainstreaming the same into the plans and practices of various production sectors in the unique High Range Mountain Landscape (HRML) of Southern Western Ghats, Kerala. The broad objective of the Gol-GEF-UNDP project is to protect biodiversity of Anchunad and adjoining landscape of the southern Western Ghats in Kerala from existing and emergent threats through building an effective collaborative governance framework for multiple use management. As a part of this, IIPMB is entrusted with the preparation of a State of Sector document which would focus on biodiversity and identifying multiple use management plans as potential strategy for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation in the major production sectors viz; tea, cardamom, coffee, oil palm and forest plantations. As a part of this initiative, IIPMB is organising this webinar with the key objective of identifying best practices and governance approaches for mainstreaming biodiversity conservation particularly in the production sectors. The key factors of success of conservation actions would be discussed to address important drivers of biodiversity loss.
