ö In Finland, the school year starts in September and ends in May.ö The school year is divided into two semesters, autumn semester and

spring semester, as well as into four periods (two periods persemester).

öCommon holidays are summer holiday, Christmas holiday (~20.12 -7.1.), Easter and "Vappu" (~30.4-1.5.). Other possible holidaysinclude skiing holiday (week 10) and autumn holiday (week 43).

ö Oulu University - just like all the Finnish universities - uses the ECTS grading system. OneECTS credit corresponds to 27 hours of work. Most of the university courses are worth 1-5ECTS credits.

ö The courses comprise of lectures, seminars, group work, experiments, presentations,conversations, independent work, homework, essays, studying diary, tests, exams.

ö Some courses allow you to be absent and study independently the whole time, othercourses require you to attend consistently and allow only 1-3 absences.

ö You can be absent more than 1-3 times due to illness, but you need a doctor’scertificate and your teacher may want you to do some extra work, like write an essay.

・And If I show my student card at some places like a museum, a station, the prices oftickets will be discounted.

The relationship between the students and the teachers in Finland is verycasual and friendly:

The teacher-student relationship in Japan is not kind of a friendly one.

Students in Japan almost always call them by their last name.

But in my Department of Humanities in Japan, there are so many particularclasses which teacheres are close to their students that the students andteachers seem friendlier than ordinary.

The funny case is as follows.

An exchange student from Japan may be too polite to Finnish teachers.An exchange student from Finland may be inpolite to Japanese teachers.

ö Every major subject has its own organization for students. Theseorganizations are called student guilds. They organize different eventsand parties and have their own guild rooms. Each guild also has itsown student overalls.

ö There are two student organizations for international andinternationally-minded students: Erasmus Student Network (ESN) andNetwork of International Students in Oulu (NISO).

ö In addition to student guilds and organizations, there are some interestsocieties or clubs, for example a roleplaying club, a radio club, musicand art clubs, and even a beer club!
