D5320’s Holistic Approach:

Creating Ethical Environments

By Patricia Brainerd

An Ethics Committee was formed in

District 5320 in 2009. Chaired by Pat

Brainerd with members Kathryn Court-

ney, Don Gonneville, Carolyn Johnson

and Allyn Lean, we are developing a

multifaceted program targeting RYLA,

Interact, Rotaract, and Rotarians. We

are using Living The Four-Way Test: The

Rotary Ethical Leadership Framework for Youth as

the basis for ethical leadership training and add-

ing materials we’ve used in our professional

teaching and business experience.

RYLA

After sharing Framework material with the

RYLA team, key components were incorpo-

rated into the RYLA programs for 2010 and

2011 with plans to continue in future programs.

Interact

We surveyed Interactors at a Quarterly Dis-

trict Meeting to ascertain their ethical issues

and concerns and began addressing them with

training modules at Rotary Family Day in May

2010 and 2011 and at a Multidistrict Interact

Symposium in October 2010. We will continue

this training at District Interact Training Work-

shops and at the next Multidistrict Interact

Symposium, both in the fall of 2011. One area

of concern that was uncovered, not surprising-

ly, was substance abuse. At a New Generations

meeting in the District last week, this was a

focus item on the agenda.

Rotaract

We’ve made presentations to Rotaractors on

The Four-Way Test as the highest level of mor-

al thought, and they have responded with great

interest, wanting additional training because

they wish to become involved in mentoring the

Interactors in the vital area of ethics. At a first-

ever Rotaract District Conference associated

with a 5320 District Conference, committee

members facilitated a workshop entitled Gearing

Up for Ethics.

Rotarians

We kicked off our program for Rotarians at the

May 2010 Presidents Meeting with (cont. p.2)

a dynamic presentation by Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J.,

former President of Gonzaga University. His topic was

Ethical Leadership, and he focused on organizational

ethics and its relationship to personal and cultural trans-

formation. At present, Committee members are prepar-

ing presentations to take to the clubs to spark dialogue

about ethics, applications in the workplace, and involve-

ment for the clubs in district-wide seminars.

The committee members are excited by the response we are receiving from all partici-

pants. Our approach is interactive and builds on rapport developed through dialogue

and sharing. People are very interested in ethical topics and are looking for an oppor-

tunity to discuss them in an open and supportive environment.

Reunion of Partner Districts - You’re Invited!

RYLA … Special Memories from our Campers. Notes from D5080. RYLA Campers are 18-25. Each year campers are encouraged to return as

Junior Staff. As part of the selection process, campers are asked to write a short letter telling

what they gained from RYLA and what they can contribute if selected to return the next year.

Here is a sampling of excerpts describing what they gained from their RYLA experience 2011.

There were so many life lessons and valuable information that also came from RYLA.

I learned about ethics, leadership, family, why people are the way they are, and so

much more that I will never forget.

This one week with Rotary has

touched me, my heart, and my

life so deeply, and it’s hard to

find the words to say exactly

how this happens in one short

week with 60 strangers. Yet

somehow, Rotary makes it pos-

sible.

I am reminded that there is so much more than meets the eye. The week was also a

great re-enforcement for certain things personally, such as confidence in myself and

what I am capable of in terms of leadership and creativity…

Rotary shows me all the time that with courage and motivation, we can accomplish

great, wonderful, and important things.

combined District RYLA for students who have just completed their junior year of high school.

Charter Board of Directors & Advisors

The Ethics Initiative Board of Governors The Rotary EI Board of Directors announces the formation of the Rotary EI Board of

Governors to be comprised of past, current and incoming District Governors from Rotary

Districts who are or will be utilizing The Ethics Initiative’s training program Living The Four-

Way Test in their clubs and/or Districts. Additionally, those who served as District

Governor in one of the 20 Pilot & Participating Districts during the development period

of the program, July 2007 through June 2011, shall be permanently recognized as Charter

Members of the Ethics Initiative Board of Governors.

In announcing this decision, PRID Paul Netzel, founder of the Rotary Ethics Initiative, said,

“This is the perfect way to recognize the spirit, courage and leadership of three years of District

Governors and their Districts.” He added, “They provided moral support, helped develop and

field test this program, and provided financial assistance to see that it was completed in a timely

manner. Without their participation from the beginning, this program would not have been

developed.”

Members of the Board of Governors are asked to encourage programs and activities within

their clubs and districts which will promote ethical practices in the vocations and personal

lives of Rotarians and, in particular, our new genera-

tions youth; to advise the EI Board of Directors on

issues and matters that may arise from time to time; to

be ambassadors of the program, assisting in creating

awareness and sharing personal experiences and

knowledge.

Letters of invitation will be sent the first week of

September. If you are interested in learning more

about the EI Board of Governors, please contact Chair Roy Massey. Email Chair Roy
