LIVORNO, ITALY
Arrive: 0800 Sunday, 21 July
Onboard: 1800 Tuesday, 23 July Brief Overview: Designed to be an “ideal town” during the Renaissance
by the Grand Duke of the Medici family, Livorno looks quite different now
than it did during its rise in the 16th Century. It was bombed during
World War II, leaving many of its chief sites in ruin. Many of its historic
buildings, including its cathedral and synagogue, were rebuilt in the 20th
century in a more modern architectural style. The Venice district in
Livorno, not to be confused with the city of the same name, is filled with
canals and waterways connecting the cities factories with the port and
still holds much of its original architecture and charm. It’s also a great
location to explore the rest of Tuscany, including the many beautiful
cities listed below.
Nearby Places to Visit:
Florence: The capital city of the Tuscan region of Italy and known as the
birthplace of the Renaissance, the historic city center is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Forbes rated the city as one
of the most beautiful cities in the world. Visit this beautiful area in many of our trips, including LIV 501-101 Gems of Italy and LIV
108-101 Florence & the Accademia.
Pisa: While the origin of the city’s name is still a mystery, this city is one that shouldn’t be missed. Its famed leaning tower,
which serves as the bell tower of the city’s cathedral, is an important site to see, but there are also plenty of museums and
other cultural sites to visit as well. See the Leaning Tower (outside view) with LIV 109-101 Splendours of Pisa.
Lucca: Known for being one of Italy’s last “walled” cities, the walls around this town originally served as a military defense. They
now act a pedestrian promenade that encircles the historic part of town. Take a stroll through the city in LIV 102-101 Lucca
and its Country Villas or explore by bike with LIV110-201 Exploring Lucca by Bike. You can also get a taste of the Montecarlo di
Pisa with LIV 113-202 Hills of Lucca & Wine Tasting.
Siena: Another city denoted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Siena is often compared to Florence by locals and tourists
alike. Siena’s gothic atmosphere and majestic buildings provides a counterpoint to many of the other cities in the Tuscan
region. Compare the rival cities of Florence and Siena yourself with LIV 201-201 Siena & Chianti Region or take a stroll through
the city’s winding lanes with LIV 103-201 Siena & San Gimignano.

Today you will visit Florence, the
capital town of Tuscany, San
Gimignano and you will learn how
to cook Italian dishes!
Botticelli, Michelangelo and
Leonardo da Vinci all left their
mark on Florence, the cradle of the
Renaissance and Tuscany’s

Ponte Vecchio bridge, silhouetting
the red rooftops and lengthening the shadows of Florence’s tangled medieval
alleyways. Before enjoying your cooking class, you will have free time in San

Gimignano has all the mystery and allure of a medieval hill town with ancient
walls which encircle the beautiful towers that once watched over the town.
Your cooking class will be a recreational and social occasion for discovering the
gastronomic and cultural roots of the area. The aim is for the “dish” to come
alive for visitors who are eager to taste the local cuisine and learn the secrets of
the basic recipes. The only requirement for participating is a love for food, places
and their inhabitants!
The next day, explore Siena. All medieval towers, piazzas and dreamy country
views – Siena is a miniature masterpiece of a city and Florence’s age-old rival.
The UNESCO-listed center brings you back to the Middle Ages at the Gothic
Duomo and vast Piazza del Campo, the backdrop for the thunderous Palio horse
race in summer.

LIV 103-201 SIENNA & SAN GIMIGNANO Full Day
Siena is a beautiful, medieval
ensemble of buildings and towers
cast in warm, brown, Siena-colored
bricks. Its skyline - dominated by the
gothic Cathedral (Duomo) and the
taut needle of the Torre del Mangia -
is its pride. Yet the shell shaped
Piazza del Campo probably captures
the most attention and fame
appearing in films, photographs and advertising campaigns. Together with your
guide, you will have a pleasant walk through the medieval streets of Siena,
starting from San Domenico before visiting the Cathedral (inside visit) and the
famous Piazza del Campo. You will have free time to stroll around and have
lunch at your leisure, before heading to San Gimignano. San Gimignano, the town
of beautiful towers, lies in a
picturesque position on a hill dominating the Val d'Elsa, inhabited since the
times of the Etruscans. Its squares are guarded by ancient buildings, its narrow
and shady alleys and its soaring slender towers all create the character of this
stunning town. You will walk along the main street until Piazza della Cisterna, to
see the Cathedral (outside visit). Your guided tour will end at St. Agostino
church where you will start enjoying some free time to explore the town.

LIV 104-301 DECORATION OF CERAMICS IN MONTELUPO FIORENTINO Full Day
Montelupo Fiorentino is a beautiful village,
located just on the outskirts of Florence. It has
been the most important center for
manufacturing Tuscan ceramics since medieval
times, thanks to the great quality and quantity
of clay in the surrounding area and to the role
of Florentine merchants during the
Renaissance. Today, Montelupo Fiorentino is one of the major ceramic centers in
Italy, dedicated to the production of raw materials and artistic majolica to be
exported. You will start your day with a visit to the Archaeology and Ceramics
Museum. After a nice walk through Montelupo historic center, you will reach your
restaurant for a typical Italian lunch with good pasta and much more. In the

LIV 111-301 WINE & PIZZA IN TUSCANY: COOKING CLASS Full Day
“Pizza” is often used as a synonym of “Italia.”
This tour will let you experience two of the
most important ingredients of Italian tables:
wine and pizza.
You will arrive at a farmhouse producing wine
in the Tuscan countryside and visit the cellars
while you learn about the wine making
process. You will be welcomed into the
farmhouse modern kitchen where you will
prepare the dough for your pizza which you will
later stuff and… eat!
The first special pizza was baked exclusively for the visit of King Umberto I
and Queen Margherita in Naples. To make the pizza a little more patriotic-
looking, red tomato sauce, white mozzarella cheese and green basil leaves
were used as toppings. Queen Margherita loved the pizza, and what
eventually became Pizza Margherita has since become an international
standard.
