Dear Visitors and Basketball Fans,

We are delighted that you have chosen to watch the matches between the old continent’s best basketball teams in our beautiful city. Being a green, clean, safe and friendly capital dedicated to sustainability, Ljubljana is simply thrilling, and while exploring it, you will be able to assure yourself that it is no coincidence that it is among the finalists for Green Capital of Europe 2015.

Throughout the championship, the city centre will be hosting a diverse accompanying programme of events, which will reach its climax in celebrations on 22 September, when the champion will be decided. Apart from a detailed programme of events, this brochure offers you a wealth of useful information to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. It includes tips on the sights to visit, cultural and social events to attend, and a host of other things you need to know to be able to look back on Ljubljana and EuroBasket 2013 with the fondest of memories.

Ljubljana is a sports city where a sound mind in a healthy body is appreciated. We cheer loudly, but in

a sportsmanlike manner, giving support to all competitors, so I feel confident that the excellent sports performances to be seen at the Tivoli Hall and Stožice Arena will be accompanied by an atmosphere of positive fan support.

I am convinced that you will love Ljubljana and that you will visit it again after you have seen for yourself that it is truly the most beautiful city in the world.

We welcome you with open arms and look forward to having you back in the future.

Ljubljana is a meeting point of cultures, nations, religions and architectural styles, and a place which brings together people

from around Europe.

Lying halfway between Vienna and Venice, between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea, it has a relaxed Mediterranean feel and a baroque, Central European soul. Given its central position in the country, it is a perfect base for exploring the beauty and diversity of Slovenia.

Ljubljana is a compact modern city full of charm and historical interest. Both locals and visitors see it as a place made to the measure of man: being the Slovenian capital, it provides big city amenities, but due to its small size, it is easily navigable and has a relaxed small-town atmosphere.

The city owes much of its character to the famous architect Jože Plečnik, its native son, and its river, the Ljubljanica, which winds through the historical city centre and is spanned by numerous picturesque bridges. Visitors are impressed by the high quality of living in Ljubljana and delighted by the city’s cultural and tourism offerings. Despite growing numbers of tourists, Ljubljana remains to be a safe green city friendly to visitors.

Ljubljana boasts a huge outdoor memorial, a 34-kilometre walking route known as The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (The Green Ring), which runs along the course of the barbed-wire fence which surrounded Ljubljana during World War II and is unique in the world. The effects of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle are increasingly noticeable and the number of those participating in major sports and recreation events is larger every year.

WHAT TO DO IN LJUBLJANA?

Here are some tips on how to get familiar with the city and enjoy what it has to offer.

• Climb to the top of Ljubljana Castle’s outlook tower and enjoy superb views of the city and beyond.

• Take a walk along the Ljubljanica and explore the riverside bars and restaurants or take a boat ride.

• Feel the pulse of the historical city centre while exploring its streets.

• Take a stroll along the Tivoli Park’s Jakopič Promenade and view an open-air photographic exhibition.

• Visit the picturesque Central Market for a snack or to get a souvenir.

• Treat yourself to a top-class cultural experience. See a classical music concert, a dance or theatre performance or an opera. Check out the numerous festival offerings.

• Get to know the city’s rich history. Visit its attractive modern museums and galleries.

• Explore Ljubljana’s vibrant coffee bar and club scene.

Kongresni trg tourist information pointDaily from 13:00 to 20:00, the Kongresni trg square will be the site of a tourist information point and ticket outlet set up in front of an open-topped double-decker, where basketball fans and other visitors to the fan entertainment zone will be able to obtain information related to Ljubljana and the EuroBasket championship, as weel as purchase tickets to city tours, boat rides along the Ljubljanica river, open-top double-decker sightseeing tours and more.

September will see the centrally located Kongresni trg square turned into a popular spot for basketball fans.

Throughout the championship, from 4 to 22 September, Kongresni trg will be hosting a vibrant fan entertainment zone, where those without tickets will be able to follow the championship action on a large screen. A stage set up in the square will host an extensive programme of music and entertainment and a lot of activity will also take place off-stage: a pleasant atmosphere will be created by the Kazina all-girl dance troupe; visitors will be entertained by performances from the Gledališče Ane Monro street theatre, the Pustotnik accordion ensemble, and many others; every now and then, a spectacular laser light projection will be beamed onto the façade of the Slovenian Philharmonic building.

Kongresni trg will also host ‘live basketball’; the ball will be slam-dunked by the members of the acrobatic basketball team Dunking Devils. The programme of events will be particularly extensive on non-match days. It will include offerings from the embassies of the countries taking part in the championship. From morning until late at night, a wide choice of drinks and snacks will be available from seven catering kiosks.

The square’s vibrant atmosphere will spill over into the neighbouring Zvezda Park, decorated to the theme of basketball by Ljubljana’s primary school pupils. From this perfect place for sitting around in the shade of trees, it will spread throughout the city so that not only basketball fans, but also other visitors and locals will be kept in a mood of excited expectation.
