Welcome

A quieter news month this month, but some interesting events to lookforward to.

This month’s front cover picture wassupplied to us by Peter Ratcliffe. Itwas taken in 1924 outside the MinersArms in Maeshafn. More details andthe article to which it relates are onpages 30 and 31.

The next whisky master class takesplace on 4th May with just a fewtickets left; these events are highly(personally) recommended!

There’s also a committee organising ajubilee event, which should be fun, more details on pages 22 and 23.

And, of course, it’s local election timein May, so don’t forget to vote! All thecandidates are listed on page 5. It alsomeans a sad farewell to Dr. Christineas County Councillor. We would liketo thank her for her contributionsover the past four years.

The Clwydian Range Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is hometo some of the finest food producers in North Wales. The newlylaunch Clwydian Range Food Trail highlights food producers com-mitted to quality, delicious & affordable food.

At CAFFI FLORENCE, locally sourced food is at the heart of our ap-proach to food. Minimising food miles, reducing packaging, max-imising freshness & quality are core to our beliefs.

This recipe is the Welsh Rarebit we use everyday at the café and isa great way to use many of the products available on the foodtrail and from other local producers.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club

The Club meeting on April 16th took us on a garden visit to the OldRectory at Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr. Although the weather recently had

been inclement, the variety of flowers was varied - not only daffodilsand tulips but a wide range of other bulbs. Advice from Mr and MrsHughes on how to grow such variety for spring colour was most

welcome. After walking around the different areas of their garden weenjoyed a friendly chat with tea and homemade cakes - most enjoyable,

even if the weather outdoors had been chilly. Our next meeting will be on Monday May 14th in the Village hall at

7.30pm when Gareth Jones - farm manager at Rhug Estate - will give atalk entitled "Organic Growing".

As always, visitors will be most welcome. Cost £1.

The season has started with a matchagainst Pwllheli tomorrow, and as I writethis my inbox is getting bombarded withworried cricketers informing me of suchuseful advice as "it's raining in Chester" or"the BBC have got showers predictedtomorrow at 11am". The match is at ourhome ground in Shotton and thegroundsman has already called to say thatit is currently hailing in Queensferry!

The joys of cricket in the springtime.

Tata Steel Maeshafn Cricket Club news - wehave our own club shirts this year - over 21ordered so far and counting. Nicknameswere suggested for printing on the back ofthem, but I decided it was not a good ideabecause some of the names would result inarrest for the wearers!

We have already played Carmel lastweekend (we lost). The Carmelgroundsman had been unable to mow theoutfield because it was coated in snow allweek, but we played (temperature wasabout 6 degrees) and various toes turnedblue. One of the Carmel players waswearing a woolly hat, 4 layers of clothingand a coat on his top half, together with apair of shorts. He explained that he doesn'tlike his knees to get too warm before theseason starts.

A new disciplinary code has been issuedthis year by the league. Some of theprevious activities of Maeshafn players arenow offences punishable with a ban. Theseinclude the following:

1. Asking the umpire if he is blind.

2. Asking the umpire if he has been on atraining course recently.3. Informing an opposition batsman that heis a cheating merchant banker.4. Ripping off your clothes during amoment of madness after being bowled.5. Setting your dogs on the tea lady whenshe forgets to make any ham sandwiches.

Rhun Jones Spotting Column

It has been suggested by Mr S.Thomas ofsomewhere in Llanferres that we have aregular Rhun Jones spotting column. Forregular readers of the News and Views,Rhun Jones lives somewhere near you, butis rarely seen out, particularly since he gavebirth to twins. However occasionalsightings are made, news of these areeagerly sought by Rhun Jones spotters.

For those who do not know who RhunJones is, I can reveal that he was describedby a lady in Llanelidan in 2007 as the 'mostattractive Maeshafn player' and (accordingto Steve Pugh) has a distinctive birthmarkon his right buttock. To join the Rhun JonesSpotting Club, please put £5 behind the barin the Miners in the name of J Fagan.

In March/April Rhun Jones has beenspotted in the following places:

1. Crewe railway station - March 21st -armed with 2 babies, a pair of binocularsand a notebook.

2. Llangollen Horseshoe Pass - March 25th- armed with a box of matches and aderanged look on his face.

3. Llangollen International Pavilion - April6th - together with Iolo Williams - being

interviewed for Radio Wales about arsonattacks.

4. Moel Fammau - April 14th - armed with2 babies in a pram, carrying a box offirelighters and being chased byFlintshire Fire and Rescue Service.

5. Toys R Us, Sealand Road - April 18th -asleep in a cot, armed with 2 babies in apram and carrying a crowbar.

If you have spotted Rhun Jones, please letme know so I can add the sighting to thecolumn. We will award a prize for theperson spotting him in the most unusualplace.

Dear All,This is to say goodbye as yourCounty Councillor.I have had a varied time over the last4 years, much of which has been apleasure, but too much has alsobeen very boring and tedious. I haveenjoyed doing things for people, butmany of the meetings have beeninterminable.

You have a very good CommunityCouncil, which has worked hard for you, they are organised, selfless, rarely argue, but discuss things well. They are not likethe other 2 community councils in thisward, who are dysfunctional and arerendered almost useless by argumentand differences of opinion. So votecarefully for your next communitycouncillors and use all your nine votes.I shall be continuing on the BetsiCadwaldr Community Health Council forthe Denbighshire. I am now a WelshGovernment appointee and I was votedin as the Chair for the whole of the 6counties of North Wales on April 19th. Ifeel I can still be useful. The CommunityHealth Council is 'the Voice of thePatient' so use it if you have a grievance.I am arranging interviews on the hospitalradios in the 3 District General Hospitalswith councillors from Wrexham and Flint,to be given as sound bites between themusic played.

I have also been continuing with my'Irritated by the Council' programmes, for Radio Wales, this time in blustery

weather on Anglesey watching roadsbeing repaired, finding out how they areprioritised. Also I talked to the N WWales coroner about the accidents anddeaths caused by elderly drivers. I knowyoungsters have accidents too but thatis because they drive too fast. There aredisproportionately more accidents fromdrivers over 75 years. I have also beenon a wonderful community bus servicefor the elderly/disabled, which starts inLlandudno Junction and goes door todoor for shopping and Hospital/GPvisits up the Vale of Conwy on the farside where there are few routine buses.Good if this could be done inDenbighshire.

I hope to continue with the Youth club ifI am voted in as a community councillorfor Llanarmon, and we welcome allyouths from Llanferres

All the best for you are the village in thefuture.

Recognise anyone? In 1900 Catherine WynneEdwards married JohnFrederick Peters in Leigh,Lancashire. Nothing special inthat you may say, butCatherine Wynne Edwards, known as Kate was a Llanferresgirl, the daughter of the villageblacksmith Robert Edwardsand his wife Mary Wynne. Shehad two brothers Thomas andEdward. Edward succeeded hisfather as Llanferres Blacksmith until hisdeath in 1925. She also had three sistersMary Ellen, Louisa and Edith Wynne whobecame the village Post Mistress.

John Frederick Peters was an agriculturalengineer living in Leigh, Lancashire. Hehad several brothers and sisters but onein particular, Edith Ann Peters whomarried Walter Flitcroft in Leigh. Theyhad three children Ethel, Elsie and Eric.Ethel was my mother and she features onseveral of the photographs associatedwith this article. John F Peters was mygreat uncle.

The Flitcroft family visited their relationsin Llanferres between 1912 and 1930 andthey stayed in the cottage Tyn-y-Wern,on the outskirts of the village, and also atthe Post Office. The family travelled fromLeigh to Llanferres by horse and trap inthe early days with my mother sitting ona three legged milking stool for thewhole journey.John Frederick and Kate had threechildren, Dorothy Mary who stayed in

Leigh, Edith Wynne who moved back toLlanferres and Edward Ernest who alsomoved back to the village to look afterthe shop and Post Office, and who wasthe proprietor of the local garage.

Recently I had a phone call from JayneHopwood who is the granddaughter ofEdward E Peters, and therefore the greatgreat granddaughter of Kate Peters, asking me if I could give her any details

of her Peters’ roots. I had done quitea lot of research some years ago butsince Jayne’s call we have been doinga joint effort into the connection ofthe Edwards’ and Peters’ families.

The point of this article andphotographs is to see whetheranyone can help us to identify any ofthe local people whom my family met.I appreciate that the period is

between 1912 and 1930 but maybesome local residents may have thesame people on their photographs.

If anyone has any informationplease contact Jayne by e-mail [email protected] or on 07900994399.Other photographs of this periodwill be added to the LoggerheadsGarage website in the near future.

The last week or so of March was sowarm that butterflies appeared. Irecorded Comma, Peacock andSmall tortoiseshell and had a reportof Red admiral and Brimstone beingseen. All these species overwinteras hibernating adults,( in ivy, treeholes, bird nest boxes, sheds, houselofts or even behind curtains inhouses), so often appear in warmspells in March. I also saw a Hollyblue butterfly at the same time. This species overwinters as a pupaand is often the first to emerge.

Chiffchaffs proliferated and on the27th March I recorded my firstWheatear and was also lucky to seeBlackcock 'lecking' even though itwas as late in the morning as eighto'clock. One usually has to be up atthe crack of dawn to see them.

Then on April 4th we woke to findthe ground covered with snow butfortunately it only lasted for a day.The butterflies disappeared. Mostwill probably have gone back intotheir hibernaculas were they willstay until the weather warms upagain but it is likely that others willhave perished and all will have usedup valuable fat reserves. Iwondered how the Chiffchaffs, being insect eaters, would survivethe cold but I went out two daysafter the snow and they weresinging everywhere, so they do notseem to have suffered.

But spring will not be denied. On12th April I saw a Small-whitebutterfly, on the 13th there was a'fall' of Willow warblers and on the15th I recorded a Blackcap.

However, what really surprised mewas the sight of a male Orange tipbutterfly on the 15th. Although itwas a sunny day there was a chillybreeze and there had been a sharpovernight frost. Many naturalistsregard the Orange tip as proof thatspring has arrived.

Visiting a National Trust property, towards the end of March, inCheshire we encountered abumblebee which was large sizedwith a tawny coloured thorax, blackbody and white tail. I did notrecognise it and it did not conformwith any in my bumblebee book andthen I realised it was a specieswhich is new to Britain. It wasBombus hypnorum also known asthe tree bumblebee. It is acontinental species which was firstrecorded in the UK in Hampshire in2001. It spread very slowly up to2005 but then began to spread upthe east coast and graduallywestwards, although it is still mostfrequent in the south-east. It iscalled the tree bumblebee becauseof its predilection for nesting inhollows in trees but in the UK it hastaken to sometimes nesting in birdnest boxes. It is a peaceful insect, like all bumblebees, but it willdefend its nest if threatened. Beinga 'short tongued' species it favoursplants with open or daisy-likeflowers. It is not thought to be athreat to any native species ofbumblebee or any other insect and,in fact, is considered to be a usefuladdition to the British fauna.
