Postal Service Previews Last of 16 Stamps Celebrating National Park Service’s Centennial: Stamp Highlights Yellowstone National Park

A stunning photograph of two bison silhouetted in Yellowstone National Park’s winter morning sun was previewed this week as the last of 16 Forever Stamp images to be revealed over a three-week period to celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary. The uniquely designed stamp pane containing all 16 stamp images will be previewed later this week. The image was captured by Art Wolfe of Seattle, WA, who described it as, “a perfectly backlit bison standing on a small rise in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley.” The June 2 first-day-of-issue ceremony for the National Parks Forever Stamps pane will take place at New York City’s Javits Center at 11 a.m. as part of the world’s largest stamp show that only takes place in the United States once a decade, World Stamp Show-NY 2016. Dedication ceremonies will also take place at or near each of the National Parks depicted on the stamps. Individuals are asked to spread the news on social me-dia by using the hashtags #NPSStamps, #FindYourPark or #NPS100.

It’s Time to Go Camping! Bozeman, MT – The summer camping season is already in full swing on the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Many campgrounds are open and being enjoyed by outdoor enthusi-asts. Some of the campgrounds near West Yellowstone, Bo-zeman, Livingston, Gardiner, Cooke City, and Red Lodge have reservable and first come first serve sites. If you would like to reserve a site please visit www.recreation.gov. “We are looking forward to a fun and busy summer camping season,” said Marna Daley, Forest Public Affairs Officer. “Our campgrounds are very popular and are filling up quickly so if you know when and where you’d like to go consider making a reservation. Otherwise, there are first come first serve sites available.” Near Livingston the Pine Creek Campground will open on May 9 and the Snowbank Campground on May 15. The West Boul-der and East Boulder Campgrounds and the campgrounds locat-ed up the Main Boulder will open on May 27th. The Half Moon Campground in the Big Timber Canyon is expected to open Memorial Day weekend if the road dries out and stabiliz-es. The Shields River Campground is likely to be closed this summer season for road and bridge work. Near Gardiner, the Canyon and Eagle Creek Campgrounds are open year round and the Tom Miner, Bear Creek and Timber Camp Campgrounds are anticipated to open on June 1st. Near Cooke City, the Colter Campground will likely open on July 1st and the Soda Butte Campground on July 14th. Please remember to stay safe in bear country by storing food and attractants appropriately, tread lightly and leave no trace. If a road or trail is still muddy try to find another place to go for a drive or walk. “A rule of thumb to keep in mind is to always leave a place better than you found it,” said Daley. Please visit us online at www.fs.usda.gov/custergallatin or give us a call to find out more information.

OFFICIALS IDENTIFY GRIZZLY KILLED IN NOVEMBER INCIDENT (Bozeman, Mont.)—Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has confirmed that the male grizzly bear shot in late November 2015 was the bear known to researchers as No. 211. No. 211 was killed in the Little Trail Creek drainage north of Gardiner, Montana on the Gallatin National Forest, an event under investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. No. 211 was recognizable because of distinctive scars on the right side of his face likely the result of typical fights with other male grizzlies for fe-males during mating season or to claim deer and elk carcasses. No. 211 was known to many photographers and wildlife watchers. For this reason, his life was often documented in the media. In his prime, No. 211 weighed approximately 600 pounds. At his last capture in 2015, he had lost nearly half of his body weight, weighing in at only 338 pounds. His body condition was probably linked to his ad-vanced age of 25 years. Less than 5 percent of male bears born in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem survive to 25 years. The grizzly bear is protected by both the federal government and the State of Montana as a threatened species. The Service routinely investi-gates incidents affecting threatened and endangered species and is con-ducting an investigation with the assistance of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Bear No. 211, known as Scarface was 25 years old.
