I suppose It’s only fIttIng that March is our first annual Women in Business edition as this is the month we celebrate Women’s History. I’ve always enjoyed hearing stories of remarkable women through time and I’m honored to be able to share a few success stories of some local ladies that are also quite impressive right here in our own community. March also signifies the beginning of Spring and I, for one, am ready for the season. The colors

begin to bloom and we ladies get to dress (and shop) accordingly! It’s also time for Spring Break which can be a much needed hiatus for many of you. Tell us where you’re going on FB! Speaking of Facebook, I’d like to personally welcome all of our new fans. We’re over 900 now, and counting! The Beautiful Baby contest has not ended by the time this went to print but all I can say is “WOW”. We have some gorgeous kiddos in our neighborhood. Thanks to all that shared. Congratulations to Dr. Cynthia English who brought the most votes for her business into our little social network. You should be proud, Doc, you have great community support.

For the boys following along with us, I know this month is all about March Madness and your sports brains are going crazy. But take a stroll through our featured article “Woman Inc.” and discover how amazing the women in your life are. Many are also moms and wives but their talents reach beyond the walls of home. Maintaining their beauty while managing a career and a home is no easy task. Yet so many in our com-munity do this daily and without the proper appreciation they so rightly deserve. So, here’s me saying to you girls: I see ya. Do your thang. You are appreciated! Next month we’re all about the home! Shoot us some ideas, tips, or best practices you’re looking for around the home and we’ll do our best to provide the answers. Now go break out those colors. Spring is upon us!

In 1970, the Current Population Survey (CPS) began tracking workforce statistics by gender. Since that time the number of employed wom-en in the United States has more than doubled and our current market is the strongest it’s ever been in terms of female presence. To go a step further we should also look at the tallies for women-owned business.

• There are over 7.8 million women-owned businesses in the United States as of last year

• Female business owner/operators contrib-uted $2.3 trillion to the American econo-my in 2011

• 18 million Americans call a woman the head-honcho and received payroll of around $217 billion

These numbers are staggering and growing ev-ery single year. I’d say we’ve come a long way since 1920 and a woman’s right to vote. With is-sues of equality in the distance and a very prom-ising future let me be the first to say, “Boys, you better watch out!” Women-owned businesses make up more than half (52%) of all businesses in health care and social assistance. Other top industries for women include: educational ser-vices (45%), administration & support, waste management, remediation services (all 37%), retail, arts, entertainment, and recreation (all over 30%, respectively). And, these are just the number for women-owned businesses. As for industries in which women are employed we can consider it almost completely integrated, including all positions of leadership. While im-pressive, it’s actually not that surprising when you think about it. Women are naturally strong communicators, which is a must in the above-

There’s an old saying: “Behind every great

man, there stands a great woman.”

While I’m positive this is very true in many cases, it’s quickly becoming evident that the background is the last place you’ll find women today.

mentioned fields. Women are also very adept at building relationships which allow them to build a solid team around them. The collab-orative ability to empower and involve the team around them is a major contributor to success. Another impressive report by the Small Busi-ness Association in recent years is that women-owned business is far out-pacing other busi-nesses in terms of growth. This is a direct result from women choosing fields that play into their strengths and passions as a whole. It’s the whole “find a job doing something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” philosophy.

For me, it certainly is a matter of loving what I do. Getting up and at ’em every day is just a whole lot easier because it’s something I want to do, not something I have to do. I’ve held sev-eral positions in my work-life at a few different companies and cannot tell you the huge dif-ference it is to know you’re in the right place. Having a clear mission of what it is you want to accomplish in both the short and long term is a refreshing way to go about your day. I’m lucky, I know. My career chose me rather than the other way around. I think that the challenge and risk for someone pursuing their dream or their dream pursuing them is equal. Some are just fortunate enough to know exactly what it is they were meant to do. I guess what I’m getting at is for those of you out there who haven’t found their calling yet – don’t give up! As my husband and I began building our family I made the de-cision to become a full-time mom. Somewhere along the road, the urge for adult interaction took hold of me and I started putting the feelers out for something I could do at my own pace and part time. Oddly enough, it was a in a field I would have never guessed was a fit for me – sales. I had never considered myself a sales per-son and certainly would not have built a resume

in that theme. However, once I took the leap I was able to adapt the field of sales into my own strengths. I put my own “Tiffany” spin on the assignment. To this day, I still don’t consider myself a salesperson.

My goal is to build a product that impacts other business owners in a positive way and try to collaborate with them to create the best repre-sentation. It’s very fulfilling for me because my success directly relies on the success of others. I discovered early on that I had a knack for it and when the opportunity arose to buy Local Life, it was a clear and easy choice. I’m not saying it wasn’t scary, just clear. My husband and I sat down and discussed how it would and could affect our family and then took the plunge. I haven’t regretted or second-guessed that deci-sion one time since that day. I definitely work harder today than I ever have before. But, I honestly get so much satisfaction from it that it hardly seems like a job. Don’t get me wrong, there are still those days when you want to pull your hair out. But, regret – never. I am fortu-nate to be involved with other successful women that challenge and encourage me daily. They are my inspiration and my drive. A few of them are featured in this month’s edition and rep-resent many different industries like: medical, salon & spa, real estate, non-profit, dental, flo-rist, dance/recreation, and insurance, to name a few. If you’re like me, the ability to dream didn’t come easy. I am more of a “focus and do the task at hand” kind of gal. That was a lim-ited way of thinking and I hope that each of you reading this is able to look beyond your current situation to find that inspiration that moves you to take action. At the very least, start on your plan. You are strong and you are competent. If you believe in yourself others will, too. For me, work falls to 3rd place behind my faith and my

family. I think it’s important to stand by your priorities when undertaking any major deci-sion. And, I don’t consider them a compromise. It’s simply a direction and road map for me to follow.

If you’re still looking for a little more to get in-spired, it’s worth looking into the bio’s online of the following great women in business:

Mary Kay AshAfter working for 25 years with that “break-ing straw” coming from being passed over for a promotion to a male co-worker who was less accomplished (and that she had trained), she decided to go at it on her own. The Texas na-tive opened her first store-front for Mary Kay cosmetics in Dallas, TX under the founding beliefs of her Christian faith. Mary aspired to build a company that would promote women in business and let’s just say she accomplished that and then some. Honored as “Most Outstand-ing Woman in Business in the 20th Century”, Mary Kay Cosmetics has over 800,000 repre-sentatives in 37 countries with total revenues of well over $2 billion in sales. Mary Kay Ash is widely considered the pioneer for leading wom-en entrepreneurialism in American history.

Barbara CorcoranIf you’ve ever watched the television series Shark Tank, then you know this woman is all business. Quoted for making straight D’s in school but attentively listening to her mother’s table-side wisdom, Barbara took a $1000 loan from her boyfriend in 1973 to start her real es-tate empire. Over the last 25 years, she’s seen that small loan turn into well over $5 billion through real estate, books, and public speaking

engagements, as well as being a nationally rec-ognized opinion in her industry. A tell-it-like-it-is attitude and refreshing approach to the busi-ness world are her driving recognitions to her well recorded success.

Oprah Winfrey OK, so maybe this one’s a no-brainer, but a fascinating story nonetheless. If hardships are staring you in the face, a quick Google of Oprah just might shed some perspective on the term “perseverance”. Born to a teenage mother and sexually molested as a child, Oprah wore her potato sack dresses to school and somehow managed to excel amidst the poverty-themed attacks from other school children. She pro-cured a job in radio and the rest is history. Launching her own media empire, Oprah was the first woman, and African American, to earn $1 billion. Let’s just say she hasn’t slowed down since. Her grandmother is quoted as say-ing, “this child was born to talk and yearns for a stage.” You got your stage, Oprah. And you certainly took advantage of the situation!

Whether it’s business ownership you’re after or charging up the corporate ladder is your speed, know that the future is bright and is wearing heels. Behold, the capable women of tomorrow - for they are fierce, they are edu-cated, and they are unstoppable! Know that it’s OK to dream. It’s even OK to make that dream a vision and go chase it. Yes, you have priorities that come before your career and you should never sacrifice that. But there is a way to accomplish your goals, be a role model to your children, and still be a loving wife. Just tell your husband to strap his boots on, be-cause Mama’s about to raise the bar! Cheers, ladies. Go take your place in history.

Dr. Cynthia EnglishBoard Certified Obstetrician Gynecologist

Dr. Cynthia English considers her ability to care for women both her calling and an enormous blessing. As a wife and mother of two, she understands the physical and emotional challenges of women today, and knows how to help them maintain health and awareness. She uses empower-ment through education, so that the wom-en she treats are partners in their health care decisions — not just patients.

Dr. English particularly wants to ensure that women have access to the most ad-vanced and up to date services. This af-fords competent care, as well as a wider range of treatment options. One of her passions is ensuring early prenatal care in every pregnancy. According to the March Of Dimes, women who obtain adequate prenatal care have a lower incidence of preterm delivery and maternal complica-tions. Dr. English’s partnership approach assures the best care for both mother and unborn child from the very beginning.

An advocate for her patients who is com-passionate about their care, Dr. English received a Patients Choice Award For Excellence for four years running. She has also been named a “Top Doctor” by Fort Worth, Texas Magazine for 2010, 2011

Local Business Spotlight

Crazy 8 MinistriesWelcome to Crazy 8 Ministries - A ministry compelled by the love of Christ to reach out and come along side others and bring healing to the body, soul and spirit; offering wholeness in yesterday and providing help in today for a victorious walk in tomorrow. C8M is a non-profit organization with a passion rooted deep in the Word of God to counsel, partner, and de-velop those in and beyond the community into the glorious soldier(s) God created them to be.

Located in Burleson, TX they call their facility the “Stomping Grounds”. Their creative and fun approach to God’s teachings is a refreshing light to follow in your own personal walk.

Lisa Schwarz, founder and CEO, leads the charge of this wonderful group of leaders and to understand the name, look no further than her own family of 8. Their educated and caring staff of both males and females works completely volunteer and offer programs for all ages.

Their ministries include: Conference, Counsel-ing, Welcome Home, Discipleship, and Prayer Ministry.

To find out exactly what their minis-tries can offer you visit them online at www.crazy8ministries.com. Check out

their online calendar of events or just contact them directly and let them begin customizing the right program for your group.

In January alone their Biblical Counseling Min-istry saw 155 clients and conducted the equiva-lent of $12,400 worth of counseling for FREE! Via the magic of Skype they ministered to a church in Pakistan, traveled to Marquette Uni-versity for a student weekend conference, and much more.

Upcoming events have trips planned to Arling-ton, El Paso, The Ozarks, Honduras, Pakistan, and possibly India. Of course there’s a ton of work to be done locally and you’ll find C8M doing plenty right here in our neighborhood.

In May you’ll find them partnering with sev-eral other local ministries for “City on a Hill” to raise local awareness and celebrate the centen-nial anniversary of Burleson.

C8M operates solely on private donations and none of the staff is paid. If you’d like to partici-pate in the wonderful life changes God is con-ducting through the love and passion of Crazy 8 Ministries, you can do so right from the web-site. All donations are secure and tax deduct-ible. You’ll also find a place to submit confiden-tial prayer requests or sign up their newsletter.

2 Corinthians 5:13 is really all you need to know about Lisa and her team: “If we are out of our mind, it is for the sake of God; if we are in our right mind it is for you.”
