There was standingroom only at theAnglican Church in

Gustavia on Sunday morn-ing, February 5, as the firstconfirmations to take placein the church in quite a longtime were held. The servicewas led by a stellar group ofreligious leaders, includingthe presiding bishop, theRight Reverend ErrolBrooks, bishop of the northeastern Caribbean and Aru-ba, who was assisted by theRight Reverend TheodoreEastman, retired Bishop ofMaryland, and ReverendCharles Vere Nicoll, the resi-dent priest of St.Bartholomew’s AnglicanChurch. Father SylvereNuma, the Parish Priest ofthe Roman Catholic Churchin Saint Barth was also inattendance, and La Choralede Bons Choeurs, under thedirection of Charles Darden,provided the musical portionof the service, includingsome of their popular gospelsongs (Philippe Laugrand,visiting from Guadeloupe,sang one of his ‘famous’Gregorian chants, and servedas the thurifer (incense bear-er) for the service). The day was a very specialoccasion for Evans Romneyand Dylan Wayne, the twoboys who were confirmed.

They were prepared for theirconfirmation by TrinetteWellesley-Wesley, and theBishop reminded them thatthis is but another step intheir spiritual lives, ratherthan a graduation ceremony.Overall, the service illustrat-ed the cultural diversity ofthe island and the strongsense of community sur-rounding the AnglicanChurch.Bishop Brooks covers 12islands in the CaribbeanAnglican diocese, from Aru-ba to Dominica. “Some ofthe islands have manyparishes,” he said, notingthat he “lives out of a bagmuch of the time.” His wife,

who had not visited SaintBarth since the 1980s, whenBishop Brooks was based inSaint Martin, accompaniedhim. “From 1978-1990, Iwas responsible for SaintMartin and Saint Barth,” hesaid. With his powerfulvoice and powerful convic-tions, Bishop Brooks wasgreatly appreciated by thecongregation, whichincludes islanders as well asmany American guests. “Mywife and I are delighted to bewith you on this wonderfuloccasion of confirmation,”Brooks said.Vere Nicoll noted that thechurch has a new non-profitfoundation in the UnitedStates: Friends of St.Bartholomew’s AnglicanChurch, and there is current-ly an endowment challengefund underway. Some of thetrustees have stated that theywill match donations, dollarfor dollar, to the level of$100,000. Donations are taxdeductible in the US. The Contre AmiralNoël should arrivein Saint Barth before

the end of February. TheSNSM station (rescue atsea) in Saint-Martin,which used this rescueboat until now, hasreceived its new boat, bap-tized The Notre Dame dela Garoupe. Formerly inservice at the station inAntibes (France), themotorboat arrived lastMonday morning in thePort of Galisbay in Saint-Martin. As for the ContreAmiral Noël, a boat that is9 meters long and 3.42meters large, it will be putinto dry dock in the nextfew days for a general

revision before it comes toSaint Barth, where it willbe the first rescue boat atthe new SNSM station onthe island. François Cel-lerier, inspector of theSNSM for the overseasdepartments, has indicated

to Ingénu Magras, presi-dent of the association forthe new local station, thatthe SNSM plans to pro-vide Saint Barth with anew boat that better corre-

sponds to tropical condi-tions that the Contre Ami-ral Noël, which, like allboats of its type, havemajor maintenance prob-lems with its hydro-jets.The new boat, currentlyunder construction at thenaval shipyard of SibirilCarantec in Bretagne,measures 10.5 meterslong, and has two 330 HPmotors which enable it toreach cruising speeds of25 knots. Co-financed bythe SNSM and the munici-pality, the new boat shouldbe delivered to Saint Barthby the end of the year.

Apalette of overripecolors, mounds ofseductive fruit,

curious cats, unmade beds,and imaginary insects: theart of Alain Le Chateliernever fails to surprise andplease the eye. The Frenchpainter returns to SaintBarth for his eleventh annu-al exhibit at Les Artisans inGustavia, where collectorsanxiously await the unveil-ing of his latest oeuvres.Inspired by his environmentas well as his own imagina-tion, Le Chatelier studied tobe a mural and frescopainter in Italy; a talent seenin his larger, more expan-sive paintings, such as land-scapes painted near hiscountry house 100 kilome-

ters from Paris. “I spendone or two days per week inParis, but the calm of the

country is essential for mywork,” he says. His 18th-century house, a former rec-tory next door to a church,is surrounded by a walledgarden where Le Chatelierdelights in planting seeds,and watching things grow.The artist also has a knackfor miniatures, and some ofhis paintings are surprisingcomplex for their smallsize. He harbors a wickedsense of humor as well,seen in this year’s collectionof fruit paintings (and in acharming little self portrait)where mounds of whippedcream turn into moustachesand beards when the paint-ings are turned upsidedown, and in a clever use oftrompe l’oeil (of which LeChatelier is a master) themounds of fruits and veg-etables suddenly have faces,with carrots as noses orberries as eyes. Other paint-ings feature a solo piece offruit in a box, perhaps a gift,or a bee buzzing around acollection of desserts thatalmost look real.

Le Chatelier describes hispalette as “slightly aggres-sive,” as seen in the boldjuxtaposition of strong,opposing colors, such as redand green, or violet and yel-low. “I like colors that lookat little synthetic,” he says,referring to an effect he cancreate with acrylics ratherthan traditional oils. “I liketo play with colors andwake up the eyes,” he notes,adding that light is alsoimportant: where it comesfrom and how it caresses theobjects, as well as the shad-ows it creates.Among the 60 new paintingLe Chatelier will unveil thisyear, he once again revealshis playful nature, as well ashis exuberant talent. From asnowy scene in winter to theripest of summer fruits,there is a common thread inthe style and sensibility ofhis work. “The paintings arenew, yet familiar,” he says.And the abundance of fruitis an optical feast that is sureto sate the appetite of evenhis hungriest collectors.

Over 500 people visited theMunicipal Museum inGustavia on Sunday, Janu-

ary 30, for the 21st annual Euro-pean Heritage Days event, held forthe second consecutive year inSaint Barth. After demonstrationsof palm weaving and the makingof cotton thread last year, thisyear’s focus was on traditionalpharmacology. This included teasmade from local plants, includingcitronella, basil, and corossol— atotal of thirty plants were on dis-

play on the long table behind the“gatherers”— a dozen people fromFlamands, Vitet, or Grand Fond,asked by the director of the muse-um, Eddy Galvani, to reveal theirsecrets in the medicinal use of theplants. Other demonstrationsduring the afternoon includedplasters, poultices, and even cup-ping jars. Even if the latter arerarely used today, natural teasmade from local plants are stillpopular for treating minor ail-ments.

The level of delinquen-cy on the public roadsin 2005 decreased by

15% over the year before,and is even lower than 2003,proving a cause and effect:there are more police on the“beat,” and fewer problemsin the street, as confirmedlast Monday by Chief Meu-riot, the commandant of thegendarmerie for the North-ern Islands, during a generalinspection of services inSaint Barth. On the otherhand, the number of thefts(breaking and entering)increased, from 24 in 2004to 36 in 2005. Is this a trueincrease or a result of thefact that people are moreprone to lock the doors totheir homes? Hard to say,

but according to Chief Meu-riot, even with this augmen-tation, the situation is betterthan the average elsewhere.“There are no organizedgangs of thieves here, and inmost cases the break in isworse than the theft itself,”he adds. There was also aslight increase in attacks onpeople and other violence,but mostly between marriedcouples, roommates oremployers/employees.More than a true increase,but more the result of achange in a French law thatmakes hitting a spouse acrime, subject to a courthearing. Stable, the numberof drug cases, not goingover seven for users andnine for affairs concerning

sale or traffic of drugs,which concern only smallquantities and primarilymarijuana. Also stable was

the number of frauds, ofwhich two-thirds werefraudulent use of creditcards: 61 cases in 2005.

police, after the fightagainst delinquency, is thatof safety on the roads, as2005 had the same numberof serious and minor acci-dents as 2004. An overallnumber that is much lowerthan accident rate from2000-2002, but marked bythe death of a young driveron a scooter (the first deathon the roads since 2002).With the exception of one,in all of the accidents thatcaused bodily injuries, eitherthe victim or the person

causing the accident was ona two-wheeled vehicle. As aresult, the police have start-ed a large campaign con-cerning anyone on motorcy-cles and scooters: this con-cerns both the wearing ofhelmets with their strapsattached and the use of vehi-cles that have been cus-tomized to go faster or makemore noise. The policehave also been crackingdown on dangerous driving,and especially driving underthe influence of alcohol, andthe wearing of seatbelts.

“Eugélie, une belle jambe,”an autobiographical account

September 1988.6:45am. A beautiful,

sunny day. Jeanne-MarieGréaux, who is now 54years old, a municipalcouncil member, anddirector of a security com-pany, set out that morning,as she did every day, withher older son, on a scooterthey shared to get to theirrespective jobs. A morninglike all the others... until,along the way, a car cuts infront of them at the bridgenear the Eden Rock andcrashes into them forceful-ly. Yannick had only a fewscratches, but Jeanne-Marie was severely

injured, including a doubleopen fracture of her leg.Over the next two years,she underwent 18 surgicalprocedures. Separatedfrom her island and herloved ones during thatperiod, it was her twosons, and the thoughts thatshe wrote down in a halfdozen notebooks (some-thing recommended by aFrench professor she metduring her hospitalization),that gave her the strengthto fight and try to save herleg that was menaced withamputation.All these years later, andthe “notes,” that Jeanne-Marie had never wanted to

reread—“I didn’t feelready,” she says— havebeen published in bookform (400 copies) by theSociété des Ecrivains,under the title “Eugélieune belle jambe.” Over-coming her apprehension,Jeanne-Marie finallydecided to try and publishher memories. “I wantedto pay tribute to JacquelineNardoux, who passedaway two years ago, andwho, in reading my notesas she typed them on hercomputer, encouraged meto publish them.” In early2005 Jeanne-Marie foundan announcement from theSociété des Ecrivains in aLions Club magazine (sheis a member of the service

club), and decided to sub-mit her manuscript: “I wasextremely surprised to geta positive response within15 days,” she recalls.Maybe she was surprised,but not the reader who dis-covered an important les-son in courage and opti-mism in this very movingaccount. The author, who chose thepseudonym ‘Marie-JeanGO’ (Marie-Jean as ananagram for Jeanne-Marie,GO for “go ahead”),signed copies of her bookon Saturday, February 4 atthe Case aux Livres inGustavia, where it is onsale. It is also available atthe Papeterie Générale inSaint-Jean.

Thanks to its geographic loca-tion, at the northern end of theAntilles, Saint Barth, like

Saint Martin, is home to the widestvariety of marine birds in the WestIndies. “Here you find all of thespecies that nest in the Antillesarchipelago, but that is not the onlyreason that the island is one of therichest in terms of ornithology, saysGilles Leblond, an ornithologist whois studying the ornithological historyof the island. “Contained urbandevelopment and the number ofsmall islets around Saint Barth helpthe island maintain its bird popula-tion. On just 8 square miles, 13species of nesting marine birds are

found. By comparison, in Guade-loupe (657.15 square miles), thereare only 11 species. In addition,Saint Barth has a larger number ofBrown Booby (Morus Bassanus)than any other French Antillesisland, and most likely the same istrue for the White-tailed Tropicbird(Phaeton lepturus).

Three nesting sitesThe islets are not the only popularnesting spots for marine birds. Theisland’s cliffs and the salt pond inSaline are also ideal locations:

✍ Saline: Threatened with extinc-tion, the Least Tern (Sterna Antil-larum), a marine bird found only inthe Antilles and the Gulf of Mexico,has found a refuge in the abandonedsalt pond. “We think there are only1500 couples of these birds left inthe Caribbean and their number con-tinues to diminish. That is becausetheir zones for reproduction are dis-appearing. In the past, the made theirnests along the beach, but develop-ment due to expanded tourism haspushed them to abandoned saltponds, such as Saline. If this unde-veloped area were to disappear, itwould also mean the disappearancein saint Barth of this endangeredspecies.” ✍ The cliffs: Their numbersdecreasing in the Antilles, the White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaeton lepturus),the Brown Noddy or Common Nod-dy (Anous Stolidus), and the BridledTern (Sterna Anaethetus) have founda perfect place to reproduce alongthe cliffs of Saint-Barth. The same istrue for the Petrel (Puffinus). Chasedaway by development along theshoreline, the increase of rats on theisland and the capture of theirchicks, the Petrel, who nest in cavi-ties, have decreased considerably in

number. “The preservation of certainsites in Saint Barth allows them toreproduce peacefully.” ✍ The islets: the same islets aroundSaint Barth host the majority of thenesting marine birds. The White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaeton lepturus),Brown Booby, Brown Pelican, Seag-ulls (Larus), Bridled Tern (SternaAnaethetus), Sooty Tern, RoyalTern (Sterna maxima), Roseate Tern(Sterna Dougalli), and Commontern (Sterna Hirundo) all make theirnests here.

Reproduction cyclesunknown

Reproduction cycles, which differfrom species to species, are not total-ly understood: “Certain species, likethe White-tailed Tropicbird have ahigh season for reproduction butseem to make nests throughout muchthe year. On the contrary, others, suchas the Sooty Tern, have a very specif-ic reproductive season,” concludesthe ornithologist.
