BARANGAY SEAL

(SYMBOLS)HOUSES – the house represents the rehabilitation of the barangay after its devastation in 1995. It also represents the main source of income of its residents, apartments and boarding houses.

BODY OF WATER – the body of water represents the historical Olea Creek which islocated in the barangay. The Olea Creek is known for its Camel Backbridge which was said to be the landing place of Simon de Anda y Salazar when they retreated from the English invaders.

LAUREL WREATH – a laurel wreath is often associated with poetry and greatness. The barangay is known to have produced prominent sons and daughters, ones of which is the father of Kampampangan Literature, Juan Crisostomo Soto.

IMAGE OF ST. AGNES – the people of Sta. Ines were known religious. They often participate in religious processions where they show off the flower-adorned carroza of their patron Saint, Sta. Ines (Sta. Agnes)

PILLARS – the pillars represent the municipality to where the barangay is located in. The seal of the municipality of Bacolor is known to have pillars with the words “non plusultra” etched on them.

(COLOURS)MAROON – the maroon is the official color representation of the barangay. The color is often as a distinction during events and competitions.

GREEN – the green represents the environment. The barangay takes part in various environment activities like clean-up drives.

YELLOW – the yellow is symbolized as sunlight or sunshine. It represents a new era, where the people of Sta. Ines will continuously try to rebuild the old glory of the barangay.

There are no natural resources found in the barangay because it is located near the

highway. However, the residents can fulfil their needs by going to the nearby cities and

municipalities.

Most of the houses in the barangay are made up of concert materials like; hallow

blocks, cements, and metals. But there are still some houses that are made up of

woods, especially the old houses before Mount Pinatubo erupted.

After Mount Pinatubo erupted some residents of the barangay relocated in different

areas within the province, some of the different resettlements areas Bulaon,

Madapdap, Sta. Lucia and Pandacaqui.

COMMUNITY HISTORY OF STA. INES(BACOLOR)

The barrio is officially named “SUBAN”. The popular name is Sta. Ines. “TINDANG MATUA”,

“DALAN A BAYO”, “SUCUL” and “CUPANG” are the names of its Sitios. Sta. Ines was believed to

have been established during the 17th century.

There were no records available for the original families, but so far, known early families were

those of Punos, Fajardos, Gutierrezes, Davids, Macapinlac, and Rodriguezes.

“Tindang Matua” (which means old market place), a Sitio of Sta. Ines, was the commercial

center of the entire community during the early Spanish Days. The marketplace was located on the

banks of a river. The river served as the main way of cascos and bancas that came from other towns

and provinces. This river is no known longer in existence.

On the place where now stands the town hall of Bacolor was palatial homes the Venturas. The

head of the family was Don Balbino Ventura, whose son of Don Honorio became a national figure. He

served as Secretary of the Interior during the time Leonardo Wood was the Governor-General of the

Philippines.

Don Balbino was much travelled man. His three daughters were all born in various places of

the world. Dona Nunilon aboard a ship; Dona Belen in Bethlehem and Dona Africa in Africa. Don

Honorio was the only one among the children who was born in the Philippines.

Don Honorio supported many poor but bright students through college among whom our

former President Diosdado Macapagal, former Congressman Filipino Emilio Cortez, the late Director

Carreon. Among the Ventura children, only Dona Belen is still living. Don Balbino suffered at the

hands of the Spaniards.

In the Sitioof “Dalan Bayo” (which means new way or road) are the ruins of the home of Don

Francisco Joven was Dr. Jose Rizal’s friend. In his house, the national hero stayed overnight

sometimes in 1887 when his family was being persecuted by the Spaniards.

During the World War II, houses were partially looted and destroyed. The buildings of the

intermediate classes of the Elementary School were razed to the ground except the shop building.

Now, the building of the Trade School was also burned. The Intermediate building of the Bacolor

Elementary School are in the Barrio.

Among prominent sons may be mentioned former Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeals and

the later Justice of the Supreme Court Jose Gutierrez David, former Representative and CFI Judge

Eduardo Gutierrez David, former UP President Vidal Tan, former Heart Director, the late Dr. Jacobo

Fajardo, the late Dr. Marciano Barrera, former acting Governor and first Representative of Tarlac. Dr.

Barrera was former Dean of the UP College of Medicine Dr. Benjamin Barrera. The foremost

Pampanga poet and writer, Juan Crisostomo Soto (Crisot) was also from this Barrio.

The eruption of Mt. Pinatubo destroyed almost the whole barangay. The devastation of the

Municipality due to nonstop lahar flows lead to the relocation of the residents to different resettlement

areas namely: Bulaon, Madapdap, Sta. Lucia and Pandacaqui.

Having to start over with their lives and pick up what was left of the calamity, the people

suffered so greatly. But after more than a decade, the lives of the people had undeniably improved.

People were starting to rebuild their homes in the barangay. Because most of the residents did not

have the capacity, some people preferred to stay in resettlement areas.

The people of Sta. Ines developed a sense of cooperation because of this tragedy. Living in

various places had not hindered them from having unity among them.
