Is it suitable?

I would like to shoot in one of the rooms in my own house. The room will have plenty of natural light, and basic furniture that will be as close as possible to the furniture in my storyboard

In terms of genre the room is neutral, as I wish to portray genre and atmosphere through sounds and props, as opposed to location or characters. The room will have plenty of light, although I may have to use supplementary light sources in order to make each shot clearer. The room will also be suitably big for me to film with the relevant detail.

Access IssuesI will not have any access issues with this location, as it is my own house.

Lighting IssuesOne of the main issues that will occur regarding lighting is that my sequence takes place at approximately 21:35pm, meaning that natural daylight will not be available. This means that unless I change the time in which my piece is set, I will have to use supplementary, lighting in order to make my piece clear. This is equipment I have access to, and is something I will have to consider when filming.

Sound IssuesThis is not something I should have a problem with, as it is a common sound effect that I could record myself in order to avoid issues of copyright. Something that I have to consider is having enough sound to cover the length of footage, and may be something that I have to manipulate during the editing stage of developing my sequence.

RISK ASSESSMENT Access Animals / Insects Audience / Public Cables CommunicationConfined Spaces Costume / make-up Derelict buildings / dangerous structures Electricity Fire / Flammable material First Aid Food hygiene Glass Heights Hostile / Remote environment Machinery Lighting Lone working Light operation Noise

Hazard: Cables

What could cause harm: I could trip on the cables of the extra lights when walking around the room

What is the likelihood of this happening: This is relatively likely to happen, as there will be wires tracing across the floor depending on where I am filming.

How much harm: The worst harm that I could come to would be that I fall over and hit my head or break a bone.

How will the risk be managed: I will make sure that all of the wires used trace along the edges of the room, so that I am less likely to trip. I will also use extensions in order to make the wire longer, and make this more achievable. (This could also be risk due to the fact that for framing purposes I will have props scattered across the floor. I will have to apply similar management techniques to this risk, in that I will have to walk slowly and carefully when on set.)

Hazard: Electricity

What could cause harm: This could potentially cause an electric shock if I spill water on it

What is the likelihood of this happening: The chances of this happening are slim, as I won’t have any open or unprotected wires on the set.

How much harm: Electric shocks can vary in severity and can have different effects on your health. For example, it can cause skin burns.

How will the risk be managed: I will check that all the wires I use, have the standard insolating layer on them, and I will minimise the amount of water/liquid that enters the room/set.

Hazard: Lighting

What could cause harm: Lighting instruments can get hot.

What is the likelihood of this happening: This is very likely as I will be filming at night, and will definitely need extra lighting on set in order to illuminate each prop.

How much harm: This could cause serious skin burns if touched for too long

How will the risk be managed: I will make sure that the lighting equipment is not on for long periods, and I will be careful not to touch it. It could potentially be a fire hazard as well, therefore I will have to make sure that nothing flammable such as paper or certain materials is not placed near this piece of equipment. I could also wear gloves when handling this lighting, in order to protect myself from burns injuries.

Hazard: Lighting Equipment

What could cause harm: As the light is very bright, it could potentially damage someone’s eyes.

What is the likelihood of this happening: This is very likely as I will be filming at night, and will definitely need extra lighting on set in order to illuminate each prop, and as I will be adjusting it for each angle and prop, I will spend time looking at it.

How much harm: If looked at for too long, it could damage the surface of the eye or the retinas.

How will the risk be managed: I will turn the light off when adjusting it, and make an effort not too look at it directly. I could also wear shaded glasses when working with the light in order to reduce the likelihood of damage.
