Technical informaTion

Shaft-hoiSting inStallationThe company CMG (Compagnie Minière de Guemassa) headquartered in Casablanca, Morocco, placed an order with SIEMAG TECBERG on the engineering, delivery, assembly and commissioning of a complete shaft-sinking and production hoist, consisting of the entire mechanical, hydraulic and electrical parts, including the automation for the new Shaft III of CMG’s Drâa Lasfar mine. SIEMAG TECBERG established the complete engineering for the shaft-sinking operations as well as for the later production phase. The hoisting tower was manufactured on the basis of SIEMAG TECBERG’s engineering and under its manufacturing supervision in Morocco.

One special particularity of this order is the fact that first this hoist was used as a 1-rope drum hoist with a drum diameter of 4 m for sinking the 1,080 m shaft. The excavation material was transported to the surface with a kibble of 4 m³ at a variable speed of 0 to 8 m/s. For this operation, SIEMAG TECBERG delivered a steel-wire rope, diameter 46 mm, coiled on a drum with a Lebus grooved sleeve.

Usually, for shaft-sinking purposes, a single-drum or double-drum hoist is installed. This hoist requires its own foundation which can only be used up to the end of the sinking operation. Hence, Drâa Lasfar III neither had expenses for an additional foundation nor for renting a sinking machine. Furthermore, there was no disassembly work at the end of the shaft-sinking process as the hoisting machine was only erected once at its final location. On completion of the shaft-sinking phase, the drum hoist was converted – mecanically only, with a minor technical effort - to a 4-rope Koepe hoist for production. In the same way, the electrical control used during the sinking period was also applied thereafter, with slight modifications, for the normal hoisting operation. Due to the fact that there was no traditional disassembly and modification work between the end of the sinking operations and the start of ore hoisting, CMG was in a position to reduce the construction period of its new shaft Drâa Lasfar III by several months.

Ore hoisting is done from a depth of 1,080 m at a capacity of 250 t/h; the layout includes reserves for a later mine extension which is planned for a depth of 1,500 m with the same hoisting capacity. This skip/counterweight installation has a payload of 19.5 t with a volume of 12 m³ (density of hoisting material 1.65 t/m³). The hoisting speed is rated at 12 m/s in the production operation. The Drâa Lasfar mine mainly hoists copper and zinc ores.

In the hoisting installation of Shaft III, SIEMAG TECBERG incorporated its completely new developed speed

controller, type STB-SC01, which is authorized by the German mining authorities under number F-24/10/1 in accordance with the BVOS regulations. The speed controller function is an integral component of SIEMAG TECBERG’s control for hoists and sinking machines. This speed controller may equally be applied for Koepe and drum hoists. The only difference is in the control and monitoring software. The encoders, shaft switches as well as the hardware remain unchanged in case of refurbishments.

as well as the distributed and centralized I/O assigned to each control section and the redundant encoders. The controller programme was developed and checked to a very large extent on SIEMAG TECBERG’s own test unit. Therefore, it was possible to cut the commissioning period, including the test runs, for the sinking operation and monitoring of current CMG operations to a total of about two months.

Furthermore, a telemonitoring module was incorporated in the machine controller system which provides for a worldwide reading access into the controller system. Should any failures occur, this module serves to communicate fault analysis, modifications or complements to the operator at short notice.

Commissioning for the production operation is accomplished. At present, SIEMAG TECBERG experts are optimizing the production process.

single-line DiagrammeThis diagramme shows the layout scheme of the Drâa Lasfar III hoisting installation. The shaft signalling system (SSA) was extended during the convertion of the speed controller STB-SC01 to STB-SC02. The brake required only some minor modifications of the parameters. The speed controller was equipped with a new, modified programme.

The shaft signalling system of the Drâa Lasfar III shaft was also realized by SIEMAG TECBERG. The signalling panels of the loading and unloading levels were equipped with stainless steel control cabinets to resist the unfavourable climatic conditions and the mechanical loads in and around the shaft. The signalling panels at the levels were made of plastics material. At the customer’s request, redundant shaft cables were provided to assure the operation of the plant even if one of the cables was interrupted. The shaft signalling system also serves to communicate the signals of the load cell and also the signals of the loading and unloading stations to the hoist control. The signalling panels are equipped with telephones for communication from the levels to the hoist operator. In addition, there are optical and acoustical signalling devices. The present operating mode of the hoist is indicated at the signalling panels, too. Furthermore, there is a voice communication to the levels by means of howl-call telephones.
