“God rest ye merry gentlefolk...”
Over the Christmas holiday a harassed mother was preparing a dinner party. As the guests sat down to eat she asked her little daughter to say grace. Searching for words the little girl remembered a prayer her mother had said in the kitchen earlier: “Dear God, why on earth did we invite all these people for dinner? Amen.”
Christmas: some people love it, some hate it and some pack up and go away only to return when it‟s all over. So, here is my check list for a sane Christmas.
Plan: don‟t be swamped, decide what you want to do, with your family if possible, and delegate, so that you‟re not overwhelmed by pressure; if you‟re having a houseful draw up an outline of what needs doing and who‟s going to do it.
Budget: you can have treats without having to spend more than you can
afford. Golden rule = don't get into debt.
Presents: you don‟t have to keep up with the proverbial “Jones‟s”. Have you thought about clubbing together to buy one big present that the receiver really wants rather than lots that they don‟t? Do they all have to
be opened on Christmas Day?
Visits: spread out visits to family and friends - isn‟t it slightly insane to belt around the country over a period of two weeks when a visit in the dullness of January/February might be appreciated more?
Peace and Quiet: plan it into the holiday, especially with children. Have a special TV programme in mind, „time out‟ when adults and children have a break, a walk to get out, play a game.
Discuss: why not ask the family/grandparents what they‟d like to do;
don‟t take on the role of Butlin‟s Red Coat and entertainer.
Christmas: make room for the message, if it means anything to you. Plan in a Carol Service, take part in Posada, go to church. If you're not a regular worshipper, try it! You may find it makes sense of your Christmas.
Après-Christmas: beware of the anticlimax. Don‟t drift, plan life after
Christmas; this can be the most valuable time of the whole holiday.
My wife Rody joins me in hoping that you have a joyful, peaceful Christmas and New Year and, if we haven't met you, we look forward to that possibility in 2011. May you know the good news of the angels; a Saviour has been born for you. Christian greetings,

FROM THE EDITOR
W elcome to the Christmas and New Year editions of „The Link‟.
You will find the Link full of useful information about activities in our villages over Christmas and the New Year.
In particular, we have included a centre page pull-out section which lists the church services and other activities taking place in the villages. You might find it useful to have this displayed so that the whole family can have a quick reference.
In the Link itself, I have included some items that our readers might find especially useful. I particularly point you to page 15 which is entitled ICE. Certainly I was not aware of its significance until just recently. There is also some up-to-date information from the Citizens Advice Bureau on Pages 22/23.
Our Sherfield Park readers have an update on progress with their community Facility (Page 24) while Sherfield readers will no doubt want to read the Village Hall news (Page 29) and the Parish Council update (Page 26)

Thoughts and Prayers for Advent, Christmas and the New Year
Isaiah 9 : 2 & 6
The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The NIV Bible
Prayer for the Month.
Loving God, it will soon be Christmas again and in December we will be busy preparing for that day, choosing presents, writing cards, buying food, planning family re-unions. Yet in all the bustle we so easily forget the most important thing of all, the gift of your Son, the knowledge that you have come to us in Christ. Forgive us for relegating Jesus to the edge of our celebrations, for turning this season into a time for material extravagance, for doing so much to prepare for Christmas on the surface yet doing so little to make ourselves ready within. You come to us in Christ; help us to be ready to receive Him. Open our hearts to hear again your word, to welcome into our lives the living Christ and to reflect on our response to his call. In the month before Christmas, which we call Advent, teach us to welcome Jesus and to rejoice in his love, not just at Christmas but always. In your name we ask it. Amen
Prayer Points for December/January
Give thanks for the joy of the Christmas message.
Pray for the world so full of anxieties and worries, uncertain of the future and unsure of the way forward.
Pray for those who could be alone at Christmas that their need of fellowship and friendship will be recognised by those around them.
Pray for the homeless and those without food or water or shelter this Christmas that the world will not forget them.
Pray that the New Year will see a solution to the bitterness and fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq and Palestine and be a time of new beginnings.

Did you know that there is, apparently, a standard procedure for all
paramedics to follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your mobile?
ICE = ‘In Case of Emergency' We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people
attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is
the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) campaign. The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As
mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who
should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they
didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a
nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel
and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you
have stored as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
Please make this known to your family and friends, so that everybody will know about it. It really could save your life, or put a
loved one's mind at rest. ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.

Special Advent Communions at St Leonard’s
Once again we will offer three short mid-week communion services
during the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Advent means ‘coming’ - especially a ‘coming’ that is awaited. It has a double focus—past and future. We affirm that Christ has come, that He is
present in the world today, and we are reminded that He will come again in power.
The rich symbolism and meanings of Advent will help us challenge, as well
as value and enjoy, the world Christ comes to save.
During the busyness of December use these brief
services to think about the why of Christmas.

Beat Officer‟s Report WPC Mandy Jewell
It is pleasing to record that very little crime has been reported in our area to date. Two cases of theft and one or two minor traffic offences. Mandy reports there have been no further calls relating to litter. In relation to crime in the area, burglary of non dwellings are still the main offence, with another five incidents this month. There was nothing stolen in three cases.
Please do report any incidents to 101 in order that all
relevant agencies are aware of the issue and, if possible,
offenders can be identified.
SOLVE (Save our Loddon Valley Environment) held a meeting last month
at Old Basing Village Hall as part of its campaign against the plans by Taylor Wimpey to build up to 9,000 homes on „Greenfield‟ land immediately adjacent to Old Basing in the Loddon Valley. The meeting, organised by SOLVE in response to Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council‟s „Public Consultation on New Homes‟, took the form of a „Question Time‟ panel.
This is the perfect time to ask direct questions of your elected representatives, said Clive Pinder of SOLVE, to ensure support for the campaign against plans to build up to 9000 homes in the Loddon Valley. SOLVE intend to continue making sure that elected representatives are aware of the overwhelming support for the campaign, and engage in a transparent and constructive dialogue with all parts of the community.
If you want to know more about SOLVE or about future meetings, contact Clive Pinder: Phone: 07718 537377

From the Citizens Advice Bureau
What is a Debt Relief Order?
A debt relief order is an insolvency procedure aimed at people with low income and very few assets, who are unable to pay their
debts and for whom the normal bankruptcy procedure is too expensive.
A debt relief order will only be available to someone who
satisfies the following criteria:-
s/he is unable to pay her/his debts
s/he has debts of £15,000 or less at the date when the
application is determined by the Official Receiver
her/his available income, after paying her/his normal
household expenses, is £50 a month or less
the gross value of her/his assets is £300 or less. Vehicles
worth under £1,000 are ignored when assets are valued
s/he lives in England or Wales, or has been resident or
carrying on business in England or Wales in the last three
years
s/he is not subject to any other formal insolvency procedure at
the time of the application for the debt relief order
s/he must not have had a debt relief order within the previous
six years.
A debt relief order costs £90. The £90 will not be refunded if the
application is rejected, for example, because the criteria for an order (above) are not met.
An application for a debt relief order has to be made through an approved intermediary. This is a specialist debt adviser who has been authorised to make applications on behalf of clients.

“Always on Christmas night there was music. An uncle played the fiddle, a cousin sang "Cherry Ripe," and
another uncle sang "Drake's Drum." It was very warm in the little house. Auntie Hannah, who had got on to the parsnip wine, sang a song about Bleeding Hearts and Death, and then another in which she said her heart was like a Bird's Nest; and then everybody laughed again; and then I went to bed. Looking through my bedroom
window, out into the moonlight and the unending smoke-coloured snow, I could see the lights in the windows of all the other houses on our hill and hear the music rising from them up the long, steady falling night. I turned the gas down, I got into bed. I said some words to the close and holy darkness, and then I slept”. Dylan Thomas

Sherfield Park Community Association
With only months to go before the new Community Centre opens the Association‘s activities are now focused on the many arrangements that will need to be in place if we are to assume responsibility for the centre‘s
operations and management.
Following the Association‘s negotiations with BDBC on the administration
of the centres outside sports facilities I am pleased to confirm that the SPCA will now be responsible for the operation and management of the football pitches and change rooms. The facilities which comprise two full
sized football pitches and changing rooms to accommodate up to 72 players, together with officials‘ changing rooms and first aid facilities, available for the beginning of the 2011/2012 football season.
A number of SPCA committee members have visited the site of the new community centre to view its progress and to assess the tasks that will
need to be completed before its opening in March/April next year. Construction is proceeding to ensure the building is weather proofed.
The entire roof is now in place, including the 16 PV panels which will
provide renewable electricity to the centre, with window installation expected to be completed in the next few days. Internally, work is
proceeding to install the heating and ventilating systems together with electrical and service wiring. The committee was impressed with both the quality of the building and the speed of its construction. Additional visits
are planned over the next few months.
After years of persistent lobbying, the first of the developments two post boxes was put in place on the 5 November. The post box is located at the
bus stop on Gaiger Avenue. The second post box will be located close to the new Community Centre following its opening.
We have received expressions of interest from people wishing to learn more about the facilities in the new centre which have been recorded in a register of interests. We are now extending this invitation to any person,
group or company who may be interested in using our facilities.

A Prisoner of War’s Christmas (Thank you to John Batt who has contributed this interesting seasonal anecdote - Editor)
In April 1945, Bert Trautmann, evading capture by the Americans, jumped
over a hedge and landed among some Brits. They offered him a cup of tea and his war was over.
In 1946, he was at a POW at Ashton in Makefield in Cheshire. The
prisoners worked locally, mostly on farms, were paid and were allowed a great deal of freedom. As Christmas approached,
the townspeople invited the POWs to have ―Christmas dinner‖. Just before Christmas, Accrington Male Voice Choir came to sing carols
in English and German to a packed audience. The POWs‘ own choir joined them, singing ―Stille
Nacht‖. Many wept.
On Christmas Day, everyone did their best to look their best and at midday they set off into town –
two per family. Bert was with his friend Egon Rameil, taking a bottle of elderberry wine as a present for their hosts – Mr. and Mrs. Benson and Phyllis, their daughter. Bert was fascinated by the ―different‖ but pleasant
homeliness of his hosts but also surprised when he got to the ―Christmas dinner‖ which was tripe (a local delicacy), followed by trifle and custard,
and then cups of tea. (Bert never got used to tea.) Phyllis then entertained on the piano and everyone joined in. At 3 o‘clock they returned to camp with an invitation to come again on New Year‘s Day.
Bert Trautmann played in goal for the POWs side and went on to play for Manchester City. They won the FA Cup in 1956. Bert played the last 15 minutes with a broken neck. He lives in Spain with his fifth wife. He says, ―You can‘t be successful at everything, can you?‖

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council New homes consultation
The Borough Council is currently carrying out a consultation exercise on future planning in the Borough and is seeking the views of residents
about the level of housing development it should be planning for over the next 20 years. The Parish Council will be pleased to welcome
Borough Councillors Ranil Jayawardena and Rhydian Vaughan to the next meeting on 8 December to talk about the Local Development Framework. This will take place in the early part of proceedings during
the open forum, about 7.30pm, and your Borough Councillors would welcome some input from residents to take back to the Borough Council. Details of the consultation can be found at www.basingstoke.gov.uk/go/
newhomes where an on-line questionnaire is available for completion. Paper copies of the questionnaire are also available from the parish clerk
(details below). The consultation will last until 14 January 2011.

The new burial ground is progressing well and a seeding operation has
recently taken place. The next step will be to provide some hard landscaping in the form of a memorial garden and paths and to plot the
layout of graves in readiness for the first burials. There will also be a natural burial area for those who don‘t want a formal grave. The ground will not be consecrated and will, therefore, welcome those from all
faiths. A fees structure has been agreed and this is available from the parish clerk.

The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 8th December 2010 at 7.30p.m. in the Liddell Hall – all

Christmas Fair Fund Raising
Maria Sewell is organising a Christmas Fair and Silent Auction at the beginning of December. It is to be held
on Saturday 4th December at 2pm, at the Cornerstone Miss Muffet Nursery, Abbey Court, Popley Way. All proceeds will be going to Charlie's Day Unit at the
North Hampshire Hospital. It is being organised in memory of Maria‘s little girl Scarlett Sewell who passed away five
years ago. There will be lots of Christmas shopping stalls, raffles, the auction, a winter BBQ and refreshments and Santa's grotto. It would be really great if our readers could spend a little time supporting this
worthy cause.
While out walking some of you may have seen the new mauve waymarking disks for the Brenda
Parker Way. This is being set up by the North Hampshire Downs Ramblers Group in memory of one of our members and the plan is to link
Aldershot with Andover with a long distance path across the interesting and attractive countryside of north Hampshire.
The route is being opened in stages with sections now open near you with a dedicated website to support walkers available at:
www.brendaparkerway.hampshire.org.uk.
Members of the public are welcome to join Ramblers walks as guests on two or three occasions, though if you walk with a group regularly you will be expected to join the Ramblers.
Details of local Ramblers walks can be found at http://www.ramblers.org.uk/areas_groups/groupswalksfinder.
The website for the North Hampshire Downs group is http://www.ramblersnhd.hampshire.org.uk/.

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles
The Business Meeting was opened by Dee Bulpitt, our President, who
welcomed everyone. Jerusalem was sung unaccompanied and the Minutes of the previous Meeting were read and signed. Lois Batting
confirmed that there had been a good response to the request for milk bottle tops for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.
Val Denny went through the correspondence and up-coming events,
Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurer‘s Report and Val mentioned two theatre trips and a visit to the pantomime were coming shortly. Tess
mentioned that our new ―tea strategy‖ was working well and passed round a list for food for the Christmas Party Meeting. Dee confirmed that there would be a walk this month on the 11th November at 11
a.m. She went on to ask Members to vote for one Resolution in the next edition of WI Life and to bring the form to the January Meeting.
It was decided that, on a show of hands, our Christmas Charity Donations would be split, half and half, between Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and Young Carers. Several other matters
were discussed and the Business Meeting closed at 3.10 p.m.
Dee opened the Annual Meeting at 3.30 p.m. The Minutes of last
year‘s Annual Meeting were read and signed. The Treasurer‘s Report was given by Evelyn Holdaway who explained the Financial Statement and Accounts which were accepted by the Members. Val gave the
Secretary‘s Report, Dee gave the President‘s Report and asked the Members to vote for a change in our accounting and Annual Meeting
timing. It was proposed, seconded and carried that we change from November to May each year but that the next Annual Meeting will be in May 2012. Therefore, the President and Committee voted for at
this Meeting would stand for 18 months. The President and Committee stood down, and as there were no nominations and all were willing to stand again, the Committee were returned ―en bloc‖
and Dee was returned as President. A vote of thanks to the President and Committee was given, from the floor, by Kathleen Gaiger. The
Annual Meeting closed at 3.55 p.m. Tea and the raffle followed.

NWR recently participated in the nationally organised NWR Telephone
Quiz. This involves arranging to take part in a particular week and choosing the evening. We have two hours from 8-10 pm to ring the
clueholders for our next clue and to check whether the answer to the current clue is correct or not. There are 23 clues and we have to get 20 right answers in a block starting with our first allocated clue which we are
given before the evening. There is also an extra web clue which can be attempted before the quiz starts. This was, ‗Academic royalty here is plural‘ which we were sure was referring to Kings‘ College, Cambridge.
With our two clues we were quite certain that the theme of the quiz was ‗Architecture‘. So armed with various books on the subject we were
confident we would sail through! How wrong could we be? We rightly identified our starter clue, ‗There is a fabulous Moorish Palace here‘ as the Alhambra in Granada, but the answer was strictly ‗Granada‘, not
‗Alhambra‘. Not a problem we thought, until we deciphered, ‗Here you will find a bridge, a palace, an abbey and a cathedral‘, which turned out to be
Westminster, followed by ‗This brand launched by Unilever in 1969 was the first of its kind in the UK‘ which we identified as ‗Comfort‘. We then were given the clue ‗One of the Grimm shoemaker‘s friends‘ and realising
that the answer was ‗Elf‘ having checked with the relevant clueholder, we also realised that we were barking up the wrong tree! Suddenly it dawned
on us that the theme was cars! Previous unanswered questions then became a lot easier! We ended up with Imp, Astra, Golf, Capri, Maestro, Cavalier, Crusader and Hunter to name a few. One member had a flash of
inspiration with the clue ‗Foot?‘ which turned out to be ‗Legend‘! The web clue answer is of course just ‗Cambridge‘, which has a Kings‘ and a Queens‘ College. Oxford only has Kings‘. I‘m sure many of you will
remember the Austin Cambridge and the Morris Oxford which were virtually the same.
We did eventually complete the quiz, although unfortunately after the phone lines had closed so could not check all our answers. However we
have posted our entry and now await the results! It was a fun evening and enjoyed by all who took part. At the time of writing we have yet to hold our book evening and in December we will be holding our annual
Christmas party when we all take a plate of food and a small gift, play some silly games and maybe sing some carols.

Our November meeting was a floral demonstration by Ilene Iles. Ilene
demonstrated small arrangements to larger arrangements using foliage and flowers with lovely Autumn
colours.
During the demonstration Ilene answered any questions and also gave some very
interesting tips and ideas for us to use when doing arrangements at home. Ilene
kindly donated the floral arrangements she made for our raffle which was held before the close of the meeting.
Our next meeting on the 6th December will be our Christmas party.
