We would like to thank everybody from the village, and those nearand far, for their participation in the Service of Thanksgiving tocelebrate Dad's life - it was really overwhelming to see so manypeople at St Leonard's and to hear all the tributes paid to Dad.

Dad's faith, the Church and Sherfield village were the cornerstonesof his life. and we are really pleased that an amazing sum of justunder 700 was raised in Dad's memory which is going to aproject very close to his heart - the St Leonard's Church ExtensionFund.

We would particularly like to thank the Revd Bob Politt for his help

and guidance during this difficult time for us all.

Special Advent Communion at St Leonards

Once again we will offer three short mid-week communionservices during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

Advent means coming especially a coming that is awaited. It has a double focus, past and future. We affirm that Christhas come, that He is present in the world today, and we arereminded that He will come again in power.

The rich symbolism and meanings of Advent will helpus challenge, as well as value and enjoy, the worldChrist comes to save.

During the business of Christmas use these briefservices to think about the whyof Christmas.

    Prayer and Reflection

    Text for the month 2 Corinthians 10 : 3 & 4

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the

world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons ofthe world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolishstrongholds

    Prayer for the Month.

Loving God, we are reminded at this time how easy it is tospeak of peace but how difficult it is to achieve it, how easy totalk of breaking down barriers, yet how demanding it is to live

as a peacemaker. We confess there are things within us whichmake for conflict; our pride, our greed, our envy, ourimpatience, our unwillingness to forgive and most of all ourselfishness. Rescue us and the world from all that keeps usapart. Put within us a new spirit of love and openness, ofacceptance and understanding, of healing and reconciliation.Help us to be instruments of peace bringing healing and

harmony in every situation. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

    Prayer Points for November

Pray for our soldiers striving to bring peace toAfghanistan and for their families living with the daily

uncertainties and anxieties of what could happen andfor all people for whom this month brings back sadmemories

Pray for our own country at this time of anxieties andworries, for those who are uncertain of what the future holds forthem and those faced with decisions who do not know the wayto go forward.

Pray for all in our villages who are unwell that they may receivethe help, support and encouragement they need and for thosewho feel isolated and lonely on the dark winter evenings.

    From Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

    Changes to bus service

There have been changes to the local number 14 bus service

with effect from 30th October involving the times androutes. One of the major changes to the route is that it no longer travelsvia the hospital so those wishing to visit there will need to change busesat the bus station. Details of the changes may be found at:www.stagecoach.comor by phoning 0871 200 2233.

    Closure of the Post Office

As many parishioners will be aware, the local post office will be closing

towards the end of December when the current postmaster retires. ThePost Office has assured the parish council that it is committed to retaininga facility in the village and is currently looking at options for this. Oneoption would be for a local retailer/business to run a Post Office Localfrom suitable premises. Any village business interested in this shouldcontact the parish clerk.

    Village Design Statement

A Village Design Statement (VDS) is a document detailing the visualcharacter of the village and demonstrates how local character anddistinctiveness can be protected and enhanced in new development. It isan important document in the planning process and is produced entirelyby local people so is representative of the views of the village as a whole. The parish council would like to invite anyone interested in taking part inthe production of a VDS to contact the clerk to register this. Although theparish council may initiate the process, it cannot produce the document

itself so, if you value the special qualities of your village, then pleasecome forward. Full details and copies of other villages VDS may be foundat: http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/browse/environment-and-planning/planning/leaflets/villagedesigns.htm

The Evergreens Club by May MacQueen Our October meeting was our Harvest Festival Service

taken by the Rev. Politt. Peggy Willson played the organ

accompanied by the vicar on his trumpet for the singing of thehymns. A collection was taken and donated towards the churchextension fund. After tea and biscuits an auction was held ofthe harvest festival gifts which included home grown produceand home baking. The members also enjoyed an outing toMillets Farm in Oxfordshire in September. On arrival we allheaded towards the restaurant for a coffee, then we explored

the other facilities which included a farm shop, garden centre, craft gallery and farm animal zoo. We also enjoyed lunch in therestaurant. The weather was rather windy with rain showers attimes but despite this it was an enjoyable outing.

    Running for the Loos!

    by Claire and Guy Osborne

There we were, back in February, wondering how we could partakein the Talents Scheme that St. Leonards Church was running.

The idea being that you take 10 and grow it as a fundraisingeffort for the Extension Project to build a hall and toilet facilities forthe church. We decided we would give ourselves a challenge andtake part in the first ever Basingstoke Half Marathon and askfriends and family to sponsor us. Signing up was easy enough butthen came the realisation that, with neither of us being runners oreven particularly fit, we would need to do some serious training. What followed was seven long months of pounding the pavementsof Chineham at silly hours of the day and night to fit around ourjobs and the schedules of our three children. As the date drewnearer we began to feel reasonably confident that we had a chanceof completing this 13.1 mile run. Then our running numbersarrived in the post along with the course details. Our hearts sankwhen we saw the numerous hills we would be facing. At leastAutumn is suitably cool, we thought to ourselves but as we were to

discover, the British summer decided to finally arrive that weekendand it was the hottest day ever recorded in October! Just our luck.

So we found ourselves joining the throng of 1300 nervous andexcited participants at the starting line in Memorial Park on Sunday3rd October, telling each other wed be fine despite the look ofworry and concern on both our parents and kids faces as wewaved them goodbye. At 11am our 13.1 mile run for the loos

commenced and unseasonable heat wave and several long hillyclimbs aside, it turned out to be a spectacular adventure.

The spectators along the way were fantastic, not only cheering usall on but handing out cups of water, waving flags, playing musicand spraying us with garden hoses and water guns to cool usdown. Their support was incredible and made an enormousdifference keeping us all going. There was a great atmosphere andan amazing sense of community spirit. We felt really proud ofBasingstoke. The camaraderie amongst the runners was alsowonderful. There was a strong sense of encouraging and looking

    25/48

    Page 25

out for one another, particularly as the race drew on and a fewpeople struggled in the heat. It was also lovely to see that so manydifferent charities were being supported on the day, there was a realsense of running for many good causes. There were endlessvolunteers and marshals along the way too, all who deserved

medals as much as the runners and we have to take our hats off toall those behind-the-scenes as this really was a brilliantly organisedevent. For example, all runners were equipped with their own shoechips to gain accurate race times and there was even a free post-race massage for all participants!

The course was particularly challenging even for the moreexperienced runners but the silver lining had to be the stunning

scenery as we ran through Cliddesden, Ellisfield and FarleighWallop. The view across Basingstoke at the 10 mile mark at thetop of Farleigh Hill was absolutely spectacular.

Finally, after two and a half hours we were very relieved, to say theleast, to arrive back in Memorial Park and across the finish line. Itstrue to say that we could barely walk back to the car but we feltsuch an immense sense of achievement at finishing the race and al-so of being part of a very special local event. Wed like to thank allthose who have been kindenough to spend a penny andsponsor us on our Half Marathonadventure. The figure we haveraised is close to 1500 for whichwe are absolutely delighted.

So the question is, will we do itagain next year? Watch thisspace.

    Percy Sims - 6th Sept 1919 - 6th Sept 2011A part of Sherfields History

Percys long involvement with St. Leonards Church started as aschoolboy in the choir, when for 11 years, he sang a solo eachEaster Sunday. At the age of 18 he was elected to the ParochialChurch Council, which he served for the next 70 years. He waschurch warden for 20 years and treasurer for a further 10 years. His time as church warden coincided with an ongoing restorationprogramme, starting in 1953 with the electric lights and over thefollowing 12 years involved repairs to the roof, electric heating, drainage, floors, walls and ceiling. In 1972 the shingles on the spire

were replaced, using Canadian red cedar (oak shingles were notavailable at the time) and Percys sponsored and signed tile was putin place with many others. This tile was handed back to Percy in2006 when the shingles had to be replaced once more.

As treasurer, Percy saw the PCC through some challenging times andskilfully looked after the finances and kept spending under control.

He saw the future growth of the church with

more involvement of the young families, andfully supported the service changes to makethe church more user friendly to the youngergeneration. He was involved with the LoddonValley Link right from the start with Revd.James Anderson in 1971, and during the1980s kept the magazine going almost single

handed as editor, printer, collator andtreasurer.

Always an active fundraiser Percys PlantSale typified his love of the garden and hisdesire to raise money for the church.

Outside of his church activities, Percy was equally involved withvillage life. At the age of 17 he arranged a fete to raise money for a

new roof for the Village hall. He later served on the Village HallCommittee as vice-chairman and chairman, and on the Parish Councilas Parish Clerk, vice-chairman and chairman. His long and tireless

work was recognised by the presentation of the Basingstoke LongService Award.

It is unlikely the village or the church will ever again see suchdevotion and dedication of service over such a long time. Hisknowledge of the village over the last 100 years was unsurpassed. He served God, the Church and the Community for over 80 years.

We send our sincere condolences to his widow Daisy and all hisfamily, and we give thanks to God for his service to the community.

    Donald Dawson

ROY BESTRoy took on the role of Church warden in 2000. It was out of hislove and concern for Stratfield Saye that he committed himself yetanother task.

He took on the role in spite of knowing that he was facing a hugeduty and, in typical Roy fashion, he did it with his usual enthusiasmand determination.

He strove to raise money for the churchby organising a variety of fund raisingevents, in particular the clay pigeonshoots and the walk in the park.

He was always ready to introducechange if he thought it would bring more

people to the services. One example wasthe choir from Yateley Manor School whoaccompanied our Matins service inOctober of last year, an event which hegreatly enjoyed.

However, his greatest pleasure wasseeing the success of the Family Service, which he persuaded us to

hold on the first Sunday of the month. His own family played alarge part in the service and he was always proud of them,

particularly Matt and Nick, one of whom he would persuade to readthe lesson for the day. He delighted in watching the faces of thechildren as they responded to the speaker. His delight in what hesaw made him ask me to give the talks with the children facing the

congregation and me with my back to it. We compromised with ahalf and half situation and each Sunday as long as he was fitenough to do so, Roy would stand next to his pew watching overthe children like a farmer guarding his chicks.

THE WOMENS INSTITUTEReported by Ilene Iles

Dee Bulpitt started our October Meeting by welcoming everyone andintroducing Natalie Larner who encouraged us to attend the fund-raisingevent for the Village Hall on the 21st October Music from the Shows

    with a light supper.

Jerusalem was sung, the Minutes of the previous Meeting read by IleneIles and signed by Dee, followed by Val Denny with thecorrespondence. Evelyn Holdaway gave the Treasurers Report and Valasked those going to Bletchley Park to be at the White Hart at 9.30 a.m.on the 11th October. She suggested people wear sensible footwear and

clothing to cope with sites inside and out. Dee mentioned that, as thereis so little support for the monthly walk, this will be discontinued and

Val mentioned that she had 3 tickets for the Autumn Council Meeting at

the Anvil on the 18th October to hand out. If anyone needed a lift theywere to contact Val or Dee after our Speaker. Dee advised thosepresent that she and Tess had attended the Village Hall CommitteeMeeting and gave those present a report on the proceedings. Several

other matters were discussed and the Business Meeting closed at 3 p.m.Dee then introduced our Speaker for the afternoon Mrs Jina IrelandM.B.E.whose subject was Women in Prison. Mrs Ireland started hertalk by advising us that she was an ex-Prison Officer and joined theService at the age of 45. She trained at Holloway and served for 17years. The first 5 or 6 years were with male prisoners in Winchesterand then she was involved with female prisoners. Mrs Ireland said thatthe best advice she was given was to forget why the prisoners werethere; they had already been judged; and to treat them as you wouldexpect to be treated. Out of 140 prisons in the U.K. there are 14 forfemales. At the 30th September there were 86751 persons in prison82495 men and 4256 women, at a cost of 40,000 per person per yearplus families on benefits. We were given lots of facts and figures

concerning prisoners and details of 3 quite harrowing cases. whichseemed to stem from abuse in childhood. Mrs Ireland also advised us

that she had met Myra Hindley and Rosemary West. Mrs Irelandanswered several questions at the end of her talk and the vote ofthanks was given by Helen Rolton. It was a very interesting andrevealing talk about a difficult subject.

    Report by Gill Fearon

In November we have two meetings our book evening and thetelephone quiz. Our October meeting has become (owing to its

popularity) our annual music evening. We try to keep to our theme, soas this year it is Around the World, we tried to choose internationalmusic, or music which reminded us of being in other countries.

One of the first was from France, Francoise Hardys All Over TheWorld, a lovely song from the 60s and very apt! From South Americawe had Missa Criolla and some music from the film The Mission called

On Earth as it is in Heaven, a beautiful piece. We also listened tosome panpipe music called Condor, from Voices of the Andes. From

Africa, or with an African theme, was Paul Simons Homeless, MissaLuba and some pieces from Mauritius and Madagascar.

Some of us had memories to accompany our choices and one memberwho had lived in Malta in the late 50s explained that they were notallowed radios, so had piped music to listen to and one song inparticular that she remembers is Volari which we listened to sung byDean Martin. Another member said that she dreamed of driving down

the Californian coast in a Cadillac which inspired California Dreamin! We preferred the Mamas and Papas version to the Beach Boys! On thissame note we enjoyed San Francisco by Scott McKenzie. Scotland andWales featured in our choices too. From Scotland we listened to LochLomand by Runrig and from Wales, the lovely Treorchy Male Voice

Choir singing Calon Lan. Football fans might remember that Italyhosted the World Cup in 1990 and that the signature tune to the

matches was Pavorottis Nessun Dorma which almost coincided withone members honeymoon in Italy. Another wedding connectioninspired Zorba the Greek by Mikis Theodorakis.

From Spain we listened to La Bamba by Los Lobos and a trip to theCaribbean inspired Island in the Sun by Harry Belafonte. A Polish

childhood was remembered by Poppies in Monte Casino which wasperformed by the Polish National Philharmonic. Whilst we enjoyedlistening, we also liked to join in (with apologies to the local cats!) and

Que Sera Sera by Doris Day was a particular favourite! There are fartoo many songs to note them all, but some artists included FrankSinatra, John Lennon, Neil Diamond and Matt Monro.

    SCAM LETTERS

Letters are being received by residents in Sherfield on Loddonwhich are a scam aimed at obtaining peoples bank details.Similar scams are also occurring by way of e-mail.

One such scam asks for money to be sent, suggesting that afamily member has been taken ill and funds are required forhospital treatment. Another informs the recipient that they maybe related to someone who has died intestate and could be duesome money. They request bank details in order for theinheritance to be transferred.

These scams have been in existence for some time and it isstrongly suggested that people check any correspondence theyreceive, either by letter or by e-mail, VERY CAREFULLY, and donot send their bank details to any previously unknown source.
