Welcome to the June edition. I’m squinting in the sunshine writing this on the summer solstice, the year has flown by. There have been lots of events in June and we’ve had a great response from all you photographers out there. You can see some of

them on pages 9, 15 and 16.

Coming up there’s a central Sherfield garden open under the NGS scheme on the 5th (p11), followed later that day by the Summer Barn Dance (p53). Alternatively that day you could hit

Sherfest at Sherfield Park (p47).

The new St Leonard’s extension is

due to open on the 27th July (p23).

Our feature central article this month is all about Stratfield Saye House

and the 1st Duke of Wellington.

“Pastoral Letter” 'Out of the mouths of babes...' Uppermost in my mind as I write this letter are tough decisions that I need to make. Of course, not on the scale of those facing politicians and world leaders about the best response to worsening crises in Iraq, Syria or the Ukraine or even that facing members of the Church of England's General Synod who this month will debate once again the legislation enabling women to become bishops, but nevertheless my decisions continue to occupy much of my waking and what should

be my sleeping hours.

Of course, we make decisions every day of our lives, probably every hour, so I say to myself 'what's the difference here?' So how do we make decisions? By ourselves or talking options out with others? By logically weighing up the pros and cons or simply by listening to instinct? As a Christian my natural response is to pray - in St Matthew's Gospel he quotes Jesus who says 'do not worry about your life, about what you will eat or drink, look at the birds of the air.. Yet your Father feeds them. Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?'. It all sounds so simple, but alas God doesn't send email messages saying 'Karen, what you need to do here is x or y...' and so I

continue to struggle to make the best choice.

What Christians believe is that when we pray for help God provides answers in other ways, that he doesn't abandon us. I'm surrounded by friends who love, support and advise me - alas, sometimes offering opposing views - and a wise counsellor who simply says to go with the decision that feels right, that gives me peace in my heart. Help! I think I'm getting there now, but on reflection the most comforting words of all are those that have come from a completely unexpected source - a card in childish handwriting, left on my seat in Chapel where I'd come for Morning Prayer, which said simply 'God says you're doing it right. He loves you no matter what you do and He will never leave you'. All I know is that this and other cards around the Chapel originated from a group calling itself 'Children Changing Nations' - talk about 'out of the mouths of babes'- which got me thinking, if children can be that helpful to me, what

bigger scale challenges could they solve?

COUCH TO 5K (C25K) - NEW RUNNING COURSE COMING SOON

Due to the success of Sherfield Park Runners'

first C25K course earlier this year, we are

running another one!

Dependent on numbers, the 9 week course will

start in a few weeks every Thursday at 7pm

and each session will last between 30-40 minutes. No previous

running experience is necessary - just a decent pair of trainers and

the willingness and determination to want to run and get fit.

Course cost will be £20.

Almighty and loving God, we thank you for the assurance we have that you are always with us, that in you we will find help and strength in times of trouble, that whatever we face, you will always be there to reach out and save us. We thank you to hold firmly to us, even when we try and struggle from your grasp. We thank you that your mercy never runs dry despite our repeated faithlessness. We thank you that your patience is never exhausted no matter how many times we let you down. Almighty and loving God take our faith, weak though it is. Kindle the sparks of life within us and fan a new flame of love within our hearts; and so may we set out into another month with renewed purpose resolved to live and work for you, in the assurance that you are with us now and always. Great is your faithfulness now and always. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Give thanks for the success of all the village events of the last month and for the joy of the fellowship experienced by all who attended them.

Pray for all the very many Scripture Union and other Christian camps for children organised all over the country. May those who attend feel the touch of your Holy Spirit.

Pray for those who have recently married and for those who are to be married in the next two months.

Pray for an end to the continuous violence in the Afghanistan and Syria, pray especially for our troops as they look forward to an end to their service In Afghanistan.

Hartley Wespall Regatta

The 15th June was a huge success with about 250 people coming along. We had loads of young children who thoroughly enjoyed splashing around in the water entering the very varied homemade boats in the different categories, including buying a duck or a tennis ball and having a go at the various side shows. It was a very happy and friendly atmosphere. Philip Van-Grutten won the overall winner's cup. The regatta was held at the beautiful home and garden of John and Jane Malarkey who live at the Mill, which made a perfect setting

for the occasion, so huge thanks to them both.

The Friends of Hartlley Wespall are very grateful to their sponsors, Tescos, Tylney Hall, Tylney Golf, Scats, The Coach and Horses and The Shop in Sherfield on Loddon, who all help to keep our

Churchyard in good order for at least a year.

Songs of Praise June 2014

This year’s post fete Songs of Praise on the Green was a big success, with 126 in attendance, and although the sun didn’t

shine it did stay dry.

Big thanks go to Tadley Concert Brass who

once again kindly played for us.

The collection was for Mercy Ships to help them in the important medical aid they give to poorer countries particularly in Africa. There was also a fantastic display about the soldiers who are named

on the village War Memorial.

We have just celebrated Pentecost. In the Bible we read that 3,000 new and young Christians were starting something new on that day. Pentecost is often called the church's birthday. We in our church are looking forward to the completion of our new extension which will allow us to welcome the wider village community. The village, the Parish Council, the Shop and hundreds of individuals, have supported and continue to support, our church project by helping us raise money and attending our events. We are very grateful for the villages help and support. We are nearly there and the new building will be opened on the 27th of July (see P16) and look out for the publicity material. The

Songs of Praise was followed by the rededication of the war memorial.

Loddon Sports Junior F.C.

With the season 2013/2014 now behind us we can reflect on the events of the past nine months. Following an atrocious spell of wet weather, we, like so many other sports clubs suffered from block cancellations of fixtures, with a complete lack of football from mid December until the end of February. Thanks to the dedication of the Cub’s Team Managers and the players, many of whom were playing a minimum of two matches a week during the latter

part of April and into May our fixture list was completed.

Sadly we were not amongst the honours at the end of the season but the spirit of the players never let the club down. Our playing season ended with our annual ‘In House’ Tournament on May 18th when the sun actually shone for us. This friendly tournament is when every club member take part playing against each other. Our ‘Lods Tods’ age group continues to flourish for children in the 31/2 to 6 age group, these children both boys and girls are the future of the club and the Saturday morning sessions are well attended. Nevertheless we are always looking for more new players and we never turn a child away, the emphasis is on coaching fun & enjoyment.

Parents pass the word around, we would love to have more young blood.

Two of our age groups have been using the fine facilities offered in Stratfield Saye Recreation Ground, visiting clubs are very envious of us when they play. The club would like to thank Stratfield Saye Parish Council for allowing us to use these facilities and a special thanks to Richard

Gregory, our saviour with the mower, in keeping the playing area perfect.

The Club’s Presentation Day will be on Sunday July 20th in Sherfield School Sports Hall and will be divided into three sections, morning , mid-day & afternoon, the exact timings will be available nearer the date. This will be followed during the week by the Club’s AGM. We are always looking

for new members for the Committee so please, give it some thought.

Training sessions for Season 2014/2015 will begin in early August and the new season will kick off with the clubs Invitation Tournament to be held over the weekend of August 30/31st on the village green when Loddon

Sports will play host to visiting clubs in the County.

On behalf of Loddon Sports I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all of the committee and staff for the hard work during the past year and to the parents for their support in our aim to offer football, enjoyment and

entertainment for boys and girls of all ages in the area .

Church Extension News. St. Leonard’s Church.

There will be a special service lead by the Rt. Rev. Tim Dakin, Bishop of Winchester to dedicate the extension on

Sunday 27th July at 10.00 am. All are welcome.

Progress has been good recently helped by the fine weather. By the time this is published the flint work should be complete and the connection between the church and the extension in place.

By the opening on 27th July the toilets will be completed and the flooring and interior paintwork done. A new oak door has been fitted at the entrance to the church as the old one was in very poor

condition.

The bishop will unveil a brass plaque to commemorate the opening. The trees on the right of the picture, which are in a poor state of health and are a potential danger, are due to come down, subject to Faculty approval from the Diocese, (we have already received approval from Basingstoke and Deane Council for this

to be done).

There seems to be no doubt that this extension lies in total harmony with the church and churchyard

itself.

The 1st Duke of Wellington and Stratfield Saye House

Stratfield Saye House has been home to the Dukes of Wellington for

nearly 200 years.

It was bought in December 1817 for

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of

Wellington, with the money that had

been voted to him by Parliament, in

gratitude and recognition of his

outstanding service in the war

against Napoleon, culminating in the

decisive victory at Waterloo.

The young Arthur had joined the

army in 1787, aged 17. At that time

he was an awkward lad, with no

obvious military potential- his

mother commented on his chances

of success, “he is food for powder

and nothing more”. But Arthur had unexpected reserves of energy,

determination and focus and he proceeded to dedicate himself to military

service for the next 28 years, first in India and then in Portugal and Spain,

becoming the most successful General of the Age.

He was created Duke of Wellington in May 1814. Following the battle of

Waterloo, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Army of

Occupation and so lived in Paris for the next three years. The Duke’s

former secretary, now an architect, Benjamin Dean Wyatt was instructed

to look for a suitable country estate in England.

At least ten other Houses were considered, such as Bramshill House and

Uppark, before Wyatt drew Stratfield Saye to the Duke’s attention, writing,

“I feel no hesitation in saying, that the estate possesses great beauty and

dignity and is capable of being made a princely Place”.

The Duke of Wellington approved the estate on his first visit in September

1817. He liked the park, with the river Loddon flowing through it, the (Continued on page 30)

woods and its relatively easy access to London and Windsor. He

planted a Cedar across the river from the house, which has now grown

into a magnificent tree.

Stratfield Saye House had originally been built in the 1630s, on the site

of an even older house, when Sir William Pitt, Comptroller of the

Household to James I, had acquired the estate from the Dabridgecourt

family. Sir William’s

made many

improvements to the

house and park,

planting trees and

dredging the

Loddon to create a

Broadwater to look like a lake in front of the house. It was his son, the

2nd Lord Rivers who sold the house and estate to the 1st Duke of

Wellington.

Wyatt had envisaged demolishing the existing house and building a

splendid new ducal Palace, as a more suitable setting for a Hero.

Magnificent plans were drawn up, but Wellington soon decided against

building a new house- he was pleased enough with the existing one

and more importantly, so were his wife and children.

The Duke had married Kitty Pakenham, daughter of Lord Longford, in

1806, and she had swiftly borne him two sons before he departed for

the Peninsular war. He did not return to England for six whole years,

whilst his family lived in a succession of rented houses. Stratfield Saye

was the first family home he had ever owned.

The Duke’s friends were very surprised at his choice of home. Robert

Peel described it as a “wretched house, wretchedly furnished”. Mrs

Arbuthnot, a long-term friend and correspondent, wrote in her journal, “It

is not a nice place, seems damp and low, and the house is an

indifferent one for him”.

But the Duke’s reply was

always “it is good enough

for me”.

In the 34 years he lived

there he did much to

improve the house,

making it practical and, by

contemporary standards,

very comfortable. He

added a Bath stone porch

at the front door, to keep

draughts from the hall and he installed water closets, hidden inside

bespoke corner cabinets, in most bedrooms. During a trip to St

Petersburg in 1826, he was so impressed with the heating of houses in

Russia, that on his return he installed an early form of double glazing

and central heating at Stratfield Saye. The Duke wrote with pride to

Princess Lieven during the winter,

“I have just seen the thermometers on my stairs and in the corridors

and hall. They remain at 64º Fahrenheit throughout”.

In 1845 Queen Victoria indicated that she would like to come and stay.

The Duke was well aware that whilst his house was a comfortable

residence for himself, his family and friends, entertaining the Sovereign

and Her Court was a very different matter. He described his

predicament to his friend, Lady Wilton:

“Alas, it is but true! The Queen is coming to pay me a visit at Stratfield

Saye. I did everything I could to avoid the subject, never mentioned the

word Stratfield Saye and kept out of her way. Poor Mrs Apostles, the

Housekeeper. I thought she would have burst out crying while I was

talking to her of the Honour intended and the preparations to be made”.

But the visit passed very successfully, with the Queen and Prince Albert

very pleased with their stay. The Queen recorded in her journal,

“Stratfield Saye is a low and not very large house, but warm and

comfortable…. The Duke fetched us for luncheon at 2. He helped us

himself- rather funnily, giving such large portions, and mixing up tarts

and puddings together, but he is so kind and attentive about it”.

The Duke died at Walmer Castle in September 1852 and is buried in the

crypt of St Paul’s cathedral. But all these years later, nowhere holds a

stronger impression of Wellington the man, than Stratfield Saye.

48th Sherfield Show Saturday 6th September

Now is the time to start preparing! Last year saw entries increase and the judges were impressed by their quality. Building on this success, we have again made a number of

changes to the classes to keep them lively and pose new challenges. We have also changed some of the mechanisms by

which awards are made, to give more people a chance of winning a trophy!

We do hope you will take part, even if just for fun, and

help show what incredible skills and talent there are in the Sherfield district.

BREATHLESS? Breathe Easy Basingstoke is a local support group for those living with a lung condition. One of over 200 groups across the country, we

are part of the British Lung Foundation’s network ‘BreatheEasy’.

We are open to all those who fight for breath as a result of conditions such as COPD, Bronchiectasis, Fibrosing Alveolitis, IPF and Asthma. We offer friendship and support invite a selection of interesting Speakers on many different subjects and have Respiratory Experts on hand to provide expert advice and guidance to

those living with a lung condition and their families, friends and carers.

The group meets on the last Tuesday of the month at The Shaftsbury Room, Christ Church, Reading Road, Chineham, RG24 8LT, 2pm-4pm. We would be delighted to see you

Proceeds from this year’s fete will be used to support Hampshire and

Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and village charities including the Village

Hall and St Leonard’s Church.

10% of the proceeds from this year’s Fete has been put aside for

NEW CROCKERY

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We have two garden visits to look forward to in July. Our first visit on the 7th is to ‘Whispers’ near Dogmersfield. Visitors to this garden say you could spend all day discovering new

plants in these 2 acres of manicured lawns surrounded by large borders of colourful shrubs, trees and long-flowering perennials. Alstroemerias and salvias are a particular specialty of the owners, John and Sally Selfe. There is also a wild flower area, a water storage system, a greenhouse, a kitchen garden and living

sculptures. A focal point of the garden is a spectacular waterfall which cascades over large rock slabs and magically disappears below the terrace. A garden not to be missed. If you can’t make the 7th, the garden

is open under the NGS scheme on Sun 13th July (12-5).

Our second garden visit is on 21st July to Lower Lovetts Farm at Knowl

Hill. More details to follow. There is no meeting or garden visit in August.

STRATFIELD SAYE JULY PARISH REPORT

The summer is now hopefully upon us.

The Parish Council meetings for the rest of the year will be held on Mondays in the Village Hall starting at 7.30p.m. on 14th July, 6th October and 1st December

(when the precept for 2015/6 will be set).

The regular monthly coffee mornings will be on Mondays at 11.0a.m on 7th July, 4th August (Barbecue on 25th of the month), 1st September, 6th October, 3rd November and 1st December. The Christmas lunch will hopefully be held again this year (date to be confirmed). We look forward to seeing as many

parishioners for coffee and a chat as possible.

The Parish Council hope to hold a small barbecue event at the Village Hall on 25th August from noon for all the regular members of the monthly coffee mornings. So when you come along to the next coffee morning on 7th July do let either Suzanne, Linda or Penny know if you can come along (other

halves and children very welcome!! ) cost £5.00 to cover all the food.

Many parishioners know that Mr James Welch, born in Stratfield Saye, was awarded the VC in 1917 for his bravery during WW1. The parish will be receiving a plaque on the 100th anniversary of the award in 1917 in commemoration so if you have any suggestions on where it should be placed for everyone to see please let me know.

Borough Councillor’s view from Chris Tomblin

Once again we had an excellent Sherfield fete, which seemed well attended despite a couple of sharp showers. It was good to see the village out and about having fun

amongst all the demonstrations and displays.

It hasn’t been quite such fun back in the Borough Chambers, where the “change” in the council following the elections was more a case of meet the new boss – same as the old boss; still under Conservative control albeit with a minority. Even UKIP continued to cause upset even though they did not bother to show up. So I hope that as we move through the year we will see less political

manoeuvring and better outcomes for our electors.

I am still a member of Development Control and expect to see applications for Minchen’s Lane and Strawberry Fields in Bramley before long (a total of 400 homes). As a member of this committee I must be seen to not pre-judge an application and whilst I welcome and encourage you to let me have your views on the impacts to Sherfield, I am unable to form an opinion before we debate the matter at the meeting. Rest assured, however, that I will do my best to evaluate the plans in detail such that I can be certain that the impacts on the area

do not outweigh the potential gains of any development.

The closing date for comments to the changes to the Local Plan has now passed and I hope that as many of you as possible took the opportunity to respond. All comments will be collated and passed to the Government planning inspector as he reviews the entire plan. Subject to any changes recommended then the plan is due for adoption by the end of the year. Once in place the Borough should have some protection from developers trying to take advantage of us not having the plan adopted and the situation that we cannot

demonstrate a, 5 year, forward housing supply.

We witnessed the destruction of the small tree plantation along the A33, just north of the Taylor’s Farm roundabout in early June. It is not yet totally clear of the new owners’ intentions but the trees were felled without a licence, the works paid little respect to HSE guidelines and deliveries of hardcore suggested breaches of planning were in progress. To that end your local borough councillors requested the Borough act to stop the works. Tree preservation orders have been placed on the remaining trees and an injunction served. Whether this

will prove to be effective will been seen during the next few weeks.

By now all homes in the Parish will have received consultation on the Governance review for Taylor’s Farm; to decide whether it should become independent of Sherfield Parish Council, run it’s own Parish Council or join with Chineham. The borough council need as much feedback as possible to be able to make a recommendation from what the majority of resident’s wish for. I hope that if the view is to be an independent Parish Council, there will be at least 5 to 6 resident’s who would be prepared to volunteer as Parish Councillors and they could

also find a clerk.

NWR held their annual evening ramble recently. The route was a 3 mile circular walk around Rotherwick which most people agreed was just the right distance. It took us across fields with gorgeous views and large flocks of sheep with their lambs, so the accompanying dogs had to be kept under close control. Some were surprised at the lovely countryside which cannot be seen from the roads and were inspired to return to discover other paths. The final destination was the Coach and Horses where a welcome pint and home-cooked food awaited us. It was decided to repeat the walk during the daytime for those who could not make it. At the recent Sherfield Fete NWR ran the gift stall. We sell donated unwanted gifts or nearly new items. The newly purchased gazebo was very useful in protecting us from the elements when there were three or four heavy showers and customers found it handy too! We made a satisfying profit of £96 which was donated to the fete charities. Thanks to all who helped and everyone who bought something! Owing to fete preparations, our June meeting was postponed. It is about researching our names. Later in June we are inviting our husbands/partners and Bramley NWR on a barge trip on the John Pinkerton on the Basingstoke Canal and in July we are talking about white things, from snowdrops and lily of the valley to white goods. Evergreens by May McQueen

This month we went on an outing to Millets Farm Centre Oxfordshire

instead of meeting in the village hall. We were joined by some friends

of the members and also members from the Women's Institute. There

is a very large garden centre, farm shop with a large selection of

produce, restaurants and children's play area and seasonal activities

during the year. The weather was quite good and everyone seemed to

enjoy themselves.

Our June Meeting was opened by one of our new Presidents, Glenda Holder, who welcomed everyone and introduced Evelyn Holdaway and

Doris L’Enfant, our other joint President.

The Business Meeting followed after Jerusalem had been sung with enthusiasm. Our new Treasurer, Jill Sygrove, gave her first Treasurer’s Report and other reports and matters were dealt with. Those providing cakes and produce for the WI stall at the Sherfield

Fete were reminded to bring them to the stall before 12 noon.

Glenda then introduced us to our Speaker – Linda MacDonald – whose subject was “Shapes and Styles to flatter you Figure”. Linda gave us a very interesting, helpful, and at times, most amusing talk. She gave us lots of tips on what and what not to wear to suit our “shapes” and illustrated these with items from her own wardrobe. Glenda gave the vote of thanks, a lovely tea followed and the raffle was drawn.

The summer term has been a rich and enjoyable time. It is a term that has a full range of activities from national testing to performances of Shakespeare at the Haymarket. At the time of writing we have been blessed with sunshine, something enjoyed by us all in one way or

another.

Are you a computer whiz? Age Concern Hampshire is appealing for volunteer tutors and co-ordinators to deliver basic computer skills training for people aged 50 and over in Basingstoke. The charity’s eight week courses are tailored to individual needs and focus on de-mystifying technology, providing experience of computer applications that are becoming essential to everyday life. They include the use of Laptop, Desktop, IPad and Tablet computers, as well as popular social applications such as Skype, email, online banking and

internet shopping.

Volunteers operate on a one-to-one basis with clients, giving them an

hour’s tuition per week at Chineham Library.
