new horizonsDear friends, partners and clients! I am glad to present you the first issue of our brand new Rovaniemi Log House News Maga-zine. Our goal is to be at the forefront of log house construction and continuously seek for new opportunities to spread the word about our quality product. This magazine will tell you about our international projects and events, our partners, natural raw ma-terials, as well as life on the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. Russia is one of our key markets. Last year 45% of our export went to our east neighbour. we now have a strong business partner in Russia with sales offices in St. Petersburg and Moscow. we have also completed our new sales office and show room in Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. It has proved to be an excel-lent location as the Village attracts over 400.000 visitors yearly. Among them we have found new partners and leads for our sales teams around the world.

Chinese markets look promising. Our company has been doing groundwork in China for over 4 years now. The Chinese people have discovered Finland but this is not enough. Maintaining business relations and organizing mutual visits between busi-ness partners continue to be our top priority. ecological housing is emerging in China and high-quality Finnish houses are highly coveted. Last year Rovaniemi Log House was a market leader in log house imports to China, and more and more of Chinese peo-ple are enjoying healthy living in log houses, produced in Lapland. New horizons are revealing incredible business opportunities for us and we will make sure that we will succeed at pursuing them.

See you in Rovaniemi!

In 2014 we came to the conclusion to hire new personnel for our Chinese markets to keep contact with our representatives and clients. with help from Mr. Oliver Zhou we have found a right company for the task and since Spring 2015 their two employees, Shan Xiaoping (named by us by a Finnish name Maija) and Fu Yang (Satu) have been taking care of Rovaniemi Log House business in Beijing. After a dynamic start, which included spending a week in Finland in order to familiarize with the product, sales techniques as well as visiting the log house factory in Pudasjärvi, new recruits took part in Beijing exhibition. Satu and Maija have quickly embraced the log houses and even started to dream of living in one. Rovaniemi has organized training for its representatives almost on a yearly basis. An important part of the training seminar in Finnish Lapland is,

of course, bonding with our team. Lapland's nature is a unique experience for them and also for our clients. Indeed many of them have payed us a visit at our Kieppi Head Office in Rovaniemi, as well as seen the factory, where their dream house was produced. we do not only provide log houses, but wellbeing and good feeling: dreams come true in a log house made by Rovaniemi!

Rovaniemi Log House took part in a Snowmobile / ATV competition in China. The event happened on February 7th 2015 at Heping Ski Resort at Changbai Mountain. Rovaniemi was not only the main sponsor of the event, but also brought its own team from the city of Rovaniemi to compete in the race. The team succeeded as our Jyri Keskiaho became victorious in the event.

Heping Ski Resort is one of top tourist attractions in North-eastern China. Providing quality services is top priority here and comfortable log houses are built to pro-vide the maximum level of comfort to the most demand-

ing guests. Management of the resort chose Rovaniemi to be the supplier of the log houses for its VIP-guests.

Rovaniemi has delivered 15 log houses, based on the projects Scandinavia with a pool, Prestige, Swedish Home and Lapland to a place called ‘Santa Village’. It received its name after the location of Rovaniemi Head Office. In February 2015 the houses were finished and Santa Vil-lage opened for visitors. Rovaniemi has been officially represented in China since the end of 2010. Finnish log houses are becoming increasingly popular in China and the sales in the country look promising.

In Summer 2015 not one, but two Rovaniemi log houses will be ready in a mountain village of Johnbach, Austria. The village’s population consists of only 150 inhabitants, however, legendary gesäuse National Park, situated nearby, attracts thousands of hikers, skiers, climbers and sports enthusiasts. gesäuse is famous for its beautiful limestone peaks, green forests, mountain pastures and turbulent, foaming river rapids. Although gesäuse is rich in forests, the buildings here were mostly built in stone. Two new log buildings are a feature that you do not often see in the valley, however, bright fresh pinewood blends perfectly into the breathtaking views of the mountains.

New log houses are being built by Finnland Block, a Rovaniemi representative in germany, Austria, Switzer-land, Slovenia and Italy. The houses will provide home for two young local families. One house project under the name of Xeis is an individually planned log house with

The company has been present in Japan since 2013 and at the moment there are five dealers that offer Rovaniemi log houses here. Customers in Japan choose Rovaniemi log houses for their high quality and clean ecological materials. Finnish design is well known in Japan: Finnish brands, such as textile maker Marimekko and producer of modern tableware Iittala, are highly popular in the country.

The second house belongs to the Triebental project and is constructed out of 23 cm thick glued round log. Situ-ated only a hundred meters away from its bigger brother, Triebental sits on a stress-laminated deck plate basement and provides a comfortable living area of almost 100 m2.

The foundations of the houses were completed late 2014, and early 2015 two log house packages arrived from Finnish Lapland. By the Summer 2015 the houses will be ready for living. Potential clients, interested in buy-ing a Finnish log house, will be able to visit the houses, as well as smell the scent of the freshly cut Lappish pine!

Rovaniemi Log House participated in Beijing log house exhibition for the third time (The Fifth Beijing Inter-national wooden Structure Building and Decoration). Rovaniemi was the only Finnish supplier of wooden cot-tages at the event. Other foreign suppliers were repre-sented by Canadian companies. Rovaniemi shined with its fresh exhibition stand, designed by our very own Margarita Morozova. Our new reinforcements, Fu Yang

ja Shan Xiaoping from Beijing (named Satu and Maija by their “Finnish” names) also took part in the event and communi-cated in Chinese with po-tential clients. Managing Director Timo Kähkönen

and export Director Martti Kyyrönen were also present, supporting the team, as well as taking a closer look at the market. Rovaniemi presence at the exhibition was strong, serving as a proof of company’s urge to expand to the market. There were plenty of old clients, visiting the exhibition, but we have also managed to acquire new contacts. we have also gained some valuable infor-mation about the key criteria that Chinese clients con-sider when choosing a log house. China’s large market looks promising, in spite of challenging circumstances of global economy. Consequently, our participation in Autumn Beijing exhibition was already confirmed.

Moscow Log House exhibition has firmly secured its place in the calendar of the largest log house suppliers. Rovaniemi took part in all Moscow Log House exhibi-tions so far. After rouble’s value diminished at the end of 2014, expectations were cautious, however, in spite of that the exhibition attracted a lot of visitors.

Finland was represented by six companies, however Russian companies were able to present the largest ex-hibition stands. Rovaniemi stand, designed by Margar-ita Morozova, was visually the most attractive among the Finnish companies. Our Finnish partners, Puumerkki and Profin, were also represented at the stand.— Our Moscow team has handled all the arrangements well, noticed Timo and Martti, when they have arrived to exhibition opening straight from Beijing. After the exhibition was finished we were able to lay out detailed plans of our future projects.

inspiration

finding inspiRationInspiration is the name of the new Finnish cottage, assembled in ekat-erinburg, Russia. The architect of the project is Darya Pokrovskaya and the project was executed by our repre-sentative in ekaterinburg — ‘Lapland Stroy’ company. Designing of the cottage began in 2011 and in July 2012 the cottage was delivered to ekaterinburg from Lapland. Assem-bly and interior design works took almost a year, but by the summer 2013 the cottage was ready to be occupied. Since then it has served as a home for a happy family of three.

Light & spaceThe design of the house was well thought down to the smallest details and combines functionality with co-siness and comfort. A crucial part of the design consists of large windows of the living room, as well as open spaces of the interior, ensuring that a lot of light enters the house. Follow-ing that approach the central part of the house combines a living room, a kitchen and a dining room into one large space where the dwellers and guests of the house come together for social activities. On the first floor

of the house there are also a spacious office and a vacant guest bedroom. Second floor holds three bedrooms, one of the parents, another for the child, as well as a spare bedroom for a possible addition to the family!

A particular feature of the house is an elevated tower-like structure, that serves as a studio and a hobby room for the lady of the house. It is a per-fect place to do some handicrafts, as well as become inspired for different art and work projects.

fiRe & waRmthAt the center of kitchen stands a large chimney that provides warmth on cold winter days. Designed by Finnish brand Tuulikivi, it features large glass doors that do not ob-struct the view of the flames, as well as a cooking oven. The kitchen has access to the garden where ingredi-ents for a salad can be freshly picked during warm summer months. The interior design of the house is based on the French Provence style. Matte colors of the interior are pleasing to the eye and include a slightly desatu-rated tint of Asparagus green and a purple tint of Lavender.

Kieppi — eneRgy efficiency fRom natuReOpened in 2013, the Kieppi building is new, but its roots can be found deep within the history of Lapland. The birds, overwintering in Lapland, have learned to survive the harsh Arctic conditions by digging out dense snow burrows to protect themselves from cold. The temperature in the bur-row would remain warmer than outside, which would help the birds to save their energy. These burrows are called kieppi in Finnish and this concept of natural energy effi-ciency formed the idea behind the Kieppi building.

tRaditionaL mateRiaLs. modeRn way.For centuries the rugged nature of Lapland gave liveli-hood and living environment for local people. Cabins, huts and houses were made from logs that provided insulation against the winter cold. Today Rovaniemi Log House build-ings are made from densely grained Lappish pine trees, using the modern technology and designs, but in respect with the snow burrow idea. Over the centuries, no other material has been capable of providing similar protection as log. It has always lived around us. And it still does.

h elios is a luxurious Finnish cottage with a majestic appearance. It is designed for a modern dweller who

doesn't want to compromise even at his rural retreat. In spite of an impres-sive total house area of 657 m2 it still has a compact appearance and fits nicely into the landscape. This par-ticular Helios cottage is constructed in the middle of the pine forest out-side St. Petersburg, Russia. A gentle but effective lacquer finish provides protection for the wooden surface, while still retaining the natural texture of the wood. This helps the cottage blend well into the scenery. It is a spa-cious residence that will fit up to 12 guests simultaneously, as the design allows for the construction of up to 6 bedrooms. The living space is used with maximum efficiency, while still enabling room for comfortable relax-ation. gReen goLdFinnish Lapland is covered by vast, green forests. Large part of it is pine. Laplanders proudly call forests their ‘green gold’. Forest occupies a spe-cial place in Finnish folklore and Finns even like to joke that they come from the forest. Nature and forests are re-spected and cherished. Such attitude towards the forest is passed on from one generation to another, and mod-ern finns are still passionate about the forest and nature activities.

Long Live the pine!Northern pine, known as Scott’s pine, is an important tree for Finnish for-estry industry. In the old days North-ern pine was used for construct-ing wooden houses and making tar. Nowadays pine is used for pulp and sawn timber products, as well as making log houses and furniture. Pine is a versatile ecological mate-rial, suitable for a variety of prod-ucts. Normally pine can live up to 250 years, however, in the Northern regions, where the growth is slow, a pine can live up to 500-600 years. In fact, the oldes species of pine, found in Lapland, was about 800 years old!

RenewabLe mateRiaLOne of the strongest reasons to use pine wood is its renewability. while there are other competing non-wooden materials on the market, such as metal, plastics, concrete or glass, they are non-renewable. They are achieved through exploitation and processing of limited resourc-es: oil, minerals, and soil. Availability of wood, in turn, can be increased through cultivation and forest man-agement. The usage of non-renew-able materials should be decreased when possible, and the use of renew-able materials, such as wood, should instead be promoted. In spite of ac-tive use of the pine by the forestry in-dustry, the growing stock of pine has been steadily increasing in Finland since the 1970s. Currently the pine stock is approximately 1000 million cubic meters with annual growth of 47 million cubic meters.

eneRgy efficiencyProcessing wooden raw-materialsrequires significantly less energy, compared to other materials. The en-ergy consumption, needed for alumi-num production is 100 times greater

Northern pine grows in abundance in Finnish and Lappish forests. Due to moderate climate pine’s growth is slow, which makes it an excellent material for construction of quality log houses.

scots pinePinus sylvestris L.

…is a species of pine that is native to Europe and Asia, ranging from western Europe to eastern Siberia, south to the Caucasus Mountains and Anatolia, and north to well inside the Arctic Circle in Scandi-navia. In the north of its range, it occurs from sea level to 1,000 m.

and steel approximately 30 times greater, compared to pine wood. This contributes to global warming and build up of CO2 levels in the at-mosphere. One must not forget that when wood is processed, wood fuel can be also obtained from forest by-products which includes branches and residues from timber harvesting. Burning wood for fuel is largely car-bon neutral as CO2 gets absorbed by the young trees in their first years of growth. Most importantly, northern pine has outstanding thermal insula-tion properties and thus energy con-sumption of wooden houses is much lower than steel and concrete. And it also feels warm and cosy!

Rovaniemi pine mateRiaLsTraditions of log house construc-

tion are strong in Finland, so it comes as no surprise

that Finns have excelled in it. Rovaniemi offers a wide range of pine materials, such as rounded log, chinked square log, laminated

square log and lami-nated round log. The

choice of the material generally depends on the

personal preferences of the fu-ture owner of the house. Rovaniemi also offers two exclusive pine materi-als, the famous golden pine, named after its special warm golden color, and dry ‘dead standing’ pine called ‘Kelo’. golden pine is achieved when only the top level of bark is removed and the timber preserves all of its natural protective properties. ‘Kelo’ is a special material: this tree comes exclusively from Lapland. Due to slow growth, when pine reaches a certain

age, its needles and branches fall off and the root system stops receiving the necessary nutrition. If the tree re-mains vertically standing, it dries out and can be used for building pur-poses. The main advantage of ‘Kelo’ pine is the fact that its appearance changes very little over time because it has minimal moisture content. ‘Kelo’ also has an appealing silver color and a unique texture.

Rovaniemi’s wooden houses are pro-duced in modern factories in Finland. we have a large collection of beauti-ful house projects! They are prefab-ricated and can be transported and easily installed on the spot. One of our greatest strengths is our individ-ual approach and ability to create a house design, suitable for the needs of particular owner, who has chosen to live in an ecological Finnish house.

unique noRtheRn pineNorthern pine that grows in North-ern Finland has several unique prop-erties. Climatic conditions are very demanding in Lapland. winter lasts for 6 months in this region and due to low temperatures all life processes are slowed down here. Due to such conditions the pine’s growth is also slow. Its annual rings are thin and situated very close to each oth-er, which results in higher density of the mate-rial. The amount of technically and me-chanically low qual-ity juvenile wood, which forms during 10 to 25 first years of life, is limited and the share of better quality heartwood is higher. This particular fea-ture gives Northern pine higher resistance against humidity varia-tions and weather stresses. Due to the special structure of the wood, the moisture content and the oxygen level are balanced at the right level in the house. Timber also interacts with the environment in a very spe-cial way: it has the ability to purify the air which makes breathing easy and comfortable. It is also an ecologically friendly material and therefore does not cause any allergic reactions.

“Northern pine is a highly ecological ma-terial which brings excellence and image to the project.”

every summer in Lapland we can enjoy severeal weeks when the sun does not set below horizon and several months of white nights. This natural phenomenon is called the Midnight Sun.

how does it happen?Midnight sun is caused by the fact that the earth’s axis is tilted in its orbit around the Sun. It only occurs North of Arctic Circle or South of the Ant-arctic Circle. In summer the nights in Lapland are white for several months and for a period of several weeks the sun does not set below the horizon at all. The effect is stronger the closer you get to the North Pole. Lapland’s capital, Rovaniemi, is situated right on the Arctic Circle. The Midnight Sun is seen here from 7th of June until the 7th of July. However, in the Lapland’s northernmost point the sun stays up for 70 days, almost all summer! There is a downside to such proxim-ity to the North Pole as the effect is reversed in winter when the days are short. There is also period of dark-ness called ‘Kaamos’ when the sun does not rise at all and only casts a little bit of light over the horizon.

how do you sLeep?with vast amounts of light at night often it’s difficult to catch sleep. It can be a problem not only for guests, but also for local people. A good tip is to use heavy curtains and blinds. However, one can also sleep in winter and use summer time to the fullest!

enjoying summeR24 hours of sunlight per day provide some perfect opportunities to enjoy summer. Many Finnish people do just that, because Summer is known to be short and cold in Finland, so you have to cherish every moment of it! One of the best ways to do that is at the summer cottage by the lake. Here one can enjoy a variety of relax-ing activities, such as fishing, boat-ing, swimming, picking berries and mushrooms. However, Midnight Sun also has an energizing effect on na-ture and people. when you need less sleep, you have more time to enjoy your favourite activities even throughout the night. Lapland of-fers brilliant opportunities for active sports, such as hiking, canoeing our mountainbiking. There are also many engaging events in Lapland, such as The Midnight Sun Film Festival in Sodankylä and Pyhä unplugged mu-sic festival, organized in the rugged surroundings of the fells. every June, around summer solstice, Finland cel-ebrates the Midsummer day. The whole country takes several days off and heads to the countryside in order to enjoy the company of friends, visit Finnish sauna and light a big bonfire when the clock strikes midnight.
