Ranger Report LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL

2021 Fall/Winter Edition

Administration Principal: Wally Gnewikow Assoc. Princ.: Tony DePaolo Dean of Students: Beth Forde Activities Dir: Jordan Gilge

Hello Logan Family,

As I write this, we have two weeks left before our winter break. I hope you are able to find time for family, friends and yourself. Often, our thoughts go towards giving, but please remember to give yourself the gift of recharging and reflection. I truly hope that the end of the calendar year goes well for you and your family!

Friday, December 3rd marked mid quarter 2 and before you know it, the end of the first semester will be here. Semester Finals will be held January 11th, 12th, and 13th and immediately after the end of first semester, we will begin the registration process for the 22-23 school year. Please take an ac-tive role with your student in the registration process and feel free to ask questions of your student, teachers, counselors, administrators, and the future center. We will hand out registration sheets on the 19th, 20th and 21st of January and register on Tuesday, February 1st.

As I walk through the halls and classrooms each day at Logan HS, I am proud to say that we are doing everything we can to keep Logan HS an opti-mal learning environment. I am humbled each day to see the effort and compassion that our teachers and support staff give to our students. They are truly selfless people who care about educating our youth, holding them accountable, and teaching them to treat all people with dignity and respect.

With gratitude,

Wally Gnewikow

Band and Orchestra News

The bands and orchestras have had a great fall of music making. The "Pride of the North

Side" Marching Band had wonderful performances at home football games and the Maple Leaf

Parades. The orchestra just hosted the WSMA orchestra Festival in the Logan High School

MPR. Orchestras from Logan Middle, Holmen and Central High Schools participated, and the guest

clinician was Dr. Justin Davis from UWL.

Winter concerts are upon us! The Concert Band and Wind Symphony will be presenting a

concert on Sunday, December 12 at 7:30pm in the Logan Middle School Auditorium. The orches-

tras will be presenting a concert on Sunday, December 19 at 1:00pm in the Logan High School Mul-

tipurpose Room. Both concerts are free and open to the public. Please come and enjoy the music

of the season!

We have two very big events happening second semester. On Saturday, February 19th the

music department will host the WSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival at Logan High School. High

school band choir and orchestra students from La Crosse, Holmen, La Crescent and Onalaska will

perform solos and ensembles for judges.

Finally, students from the band and orchestra departments will be combining to perform

on a tour to New Orleans, LA March 15-20. Students will receive a clinic at a local university and

perform a public concert. They will also have some great sightseeing and tours of the iconic

French Quarter and Preservation Hall. In addition, students will get to enjoy local ethnic cuisine

and entertainment.

La Crosse Engineering Academy students kicked off the year with a two-day training camp

on Aug 18-19. Students went through a math/science review and were introduced to robot-

ics, electronics and soldering with a culminating field trip to Inland Printing to see their

manufacturing center.

The Engineering Academy has 26 students enrolled for the 2021-22 school year. Western

Technical College partners with our district by providing the generous use of their facilities

and state of the art equipment.

The training camp is designed to prepare incoming 11th-grade students for a robust and

successful experience in our math, science, and engineering courses. Our students will

have the opportunity to meet their fellow classmates, instructors, and partners, tour the

Western Technical College campus, and preview learning opportunities and pathways for

success.

On Friday, October 22nd, 2nd year students in the La Crosse En-

gineering Academy traveled to the Kwik Trip Bakery to see their

production facility. Students viewed robotics, programmable log-

ic controllers, and modern automation at the plant on the tour.

We are very grateful to Kwik Trip for providing this opportunity

for our students. The La Crosse Engineering Academy is a 2-

year program for Juniors and Seniors in the School District of

La Crosse.

It was a murder (mystery dinner) at Logan on October 28. LaCrossroads English 11 held the din-

ner as the wrap up to reading One of Us Is Lying, a murder mystery geared to teens. The novel

had been selected as an engaging read as well as to teach argumentative writing. Students had to

write arguments for or against the guilt of characters, providing supporting evidence from the sto-

ry. Direct and indirect characterization was taught as well, as the suspects in the book were devel-

oped layer by layer. The central role played by a gossip blog in the book lead to a meaningful dis-

cussion of cyberbullying and the effects of social media. Students found both the book and the

assignments fun and relevant. In addition to being a fun conclusion to the unit, the dinner pro-

vided an opportunity to practice social skills. Principals Gnewikow and DePaolo as well as Dean of

Students Markos Forde were guests. This provided an opportunity for students to interact with the

administrators in a different context. As the mystery unfolded, students had to use critical

thinking skills to unravel the clues. The novels, as well as the dinner, were funded by a Gold

Standard Grant from the La Crosse Public Education Foundation to Dorothy Hart and Hayley

McMullen.

Employee Testimonials:

“This is the most rewarding career I have ever had. Seeing the kids every day and know-

ing I am making a difference in their lives fills my heart.” -Kinsey Gibbs, Nutrition Manager,

North Woods Elementary

“One of the biggest benefits when I started in school nutrition is that my schedule matched

my own children's schedules. If it was a snow day, I did not have to scramble to find child-

care as I would also be off. That convenience was a huge benefit. That was over 20 years

ago. Now I love it because it is always something new every day.” -Faye Kielley, Nutrition

Manager Northside/Coulee Montessori

“24 years ago, a friend of mine said you should work for the School Nutrition program and

be home with your kids in the summer. I have been at Central this whole time and can hon-

estly say I STILL LOVE MY JOB.” -Jeannette Wuensch, Nutrition Manager, Central High School
