INTRODUCTION

A UTEM 3 survey was carried out east of Savant, Ontario for Noranda Explorations Ltd. during October and December 1988. The a im of the survey was to use a deeply penetrating EM technique to search for any bedrock conductors that might be associated with concentrations of economic mineralization in a particular target.

When mineralization is present as massive sulphides, EM techniques show a characteristic slowly decaying response which can be interpreted to derive geometrical parameters of the source. When the source is disseminated, its EM response lasts a much shorter time, and in these cases there are a number of other common geological conductors which can produce similar responses. These are contacts, fault/shear zones and overburden (clay) conductors. Identification and interpretation of poor conductors is thus often difficult and ambiguous, due to overlapping background responses.

FIELD WORK

Two crews were mobilized to ca~ry out the survey. The first crew consisted of Brent Felix and Christophe Hyde (geophysicists), B.Khamseh, C.Morin, and B.Peterson (field assistants). This crew was first mobilized to the property on October 17. After laying out the first transmitter loop, the crew was directed by the Noranda representative to demobilize and carry out a UTEM survey at the Mattabi Mine site. The crew mobilized the second time on October 26. After delays caused by insufficient grid preparation, the survey commenced October 28 and continued until November 6.

Due to poor data quality, portions of the grid were resurveyed at a later date. A second crew consisting of Brent Felix and Teresa Myrfield (geophysicists) and B.Khamseh remobilized to the grid on December 12. Surveying commenced on December 13 and was completed two days later.

Both crews were based out of the town of Savant for the duration of the surveys. A total of 16.7 kilometers were surveyed from three loops.

The production obtained during the survey is summarized in

SURVEY DESIGN

Page 5: LOGISTICAL RPT ON UTEM SUR...BRENT FELIX RECEIVED j [H 1 1989 MINING IANDS SECTION l i i i i INTRODUCTION A UTEM 3 survey was carried out east of Savant, Ontario for Noranda Explorations

A total of three loops, were laid out to obtain adequate survey coverage over the grid as shown on the accompanying grid/interpretation map. As the loop edges were not cut, the loops shown were laid out by chain and compass. Their exact shape was influenced by the waterways and flooded areas. The loops were of the approximate size 2000m x 1000m and 1500m x 1000m

Line spacings were nominally 200 m extending from 600N to 5200S, with the exception of lines 2800S to 3800S due to Evans lake. Two components, namely the vertical (Hz) and the horizontal (ilx) was surveyed, with 10 time channels of data collected at station intervals of 50m with detailing stations spaced 25m near anomalies. The average line length was 800m, with some shorter line lengths caused by lakes and impassible streams.

Each station surveyed was stacked for a minimum of 1024 cycles to ensure that adequate precision for interpretation of any deep features was obtained. At the ends of the lines away from the transmitter loop, longer averages were used to improve data quality.

DATA PRESENTATION

The data are plottted in "channel l normalized" form whereby a different reduction formula is used for channel l and the rest of the channels.

The channel l data are reduced before plotting according to the formula:

Rlc ^ (Chic - Hpc) / ( Hp) x 1001

The other cnannels or reduced using a slightly different formula:

Rnc = (Chnc -Chic) / ( Chic) x 100%

In these expressions, Chnc is the raw component c value for channel n, Hp is the computed primary field, and the index c indicates any field component. The format used in plotting the data is called "continuously normalized" where Hp in the formulae above is the total primary field at each respective survey point.

- 5 -

The data are plotted on three axes. On the bottom axis channel l (latest time) is plotted alone, normalized to the calculated primary field. The intermediate to late time channels (ch5 - ch2) are plotted on the center axis. The early time channels (Chid - ch6) along with a repeat of channel 5 for comparison are plotted at the top on a reduced sea]e.The Y axis on each plot represents the difference from 100^1 of channel l (or calculated primary field in the case of channel l).

DATA REPORT

Data Quality

The quality of the original data collected in this survey was on many of the lines below acceptable standards. However, corrections have been applied to the data where needed and in some cases the data points were removed altogether. This proved successful for a majority of the lines, however lines 6N through 8S and lines 40S, 48S, SOS and 52S were ultimately not of sufficient quality to permit confident interpretation of low amplitude, late time anomalies as would be associated with deep, good conductors. Lines 6N through 8N were subsequently resurveyed at no additional charge to Noranda. The data from the other lines remain unacceptable.

The Cause

The problem originated with the DC bucking circuit of one of the receiver coils. The problem was intermittent and only a few stations on the lines were involved. This problem was very subtle and only affected late time amplitudes. The effect was also more pronounced in the Hz data; Hx data were largely unaffected. Normally, the data would have been reviewed at the end of each day, this subtle effect noticed and the problem corrected sooner than it was. However, the downloading computer was not functional over a two week period. As a result the problem was not identified until after completion of the survey.

Correcting the Data

The nature of the DC bucking circuit is such that if the circuit is saturated, the amplitudes are more or less scaled by a constant factor. A program was devised to determine this factor from affected points near the loop, where the secondary field represents only a fraction of the measured response. At these calibration points the known (calculated) primary field could be used to determine the scaling factor. Therefore, for many of the affected points, the data could be

- 6 -

corrected with confidence. However, in several instances, the DC bucking circuit was not at saturation and the correction was not possible. If these points could not be deleted without seriously affecting the continuity of the profile, the point was deleted, otherwise the line was deemed unacceptable .

Dear Mr. Cowan:

RE: W8903-074

We received your notice of intent to reduce assessment credits. An error on our part resulted in additional claims listed which were not covered by the submitted work.

Please note that the total man day credits of 876.6 when distributed over the smaller claim number should have resulted in an increase in credit for the approved claims. Please also note that claims PA 863136 and 863137 were partially covered and should not have been excluded from work credits (maps attached) . In total, the credits should be 54 man days on each of the 16 claims.

If there are any further problems, please contact me at your convenience.

Sincerely,

NORANDA EXPIDRATION COMPANY, TJMITED (no personal liability)
