Due to its remoteness, stable fast-speed internet can’t be guaranteed in Sauce. Organizers will provide WiFi routers with limited internet capacity to share among delegates.

To ensure more stable internet connection it is suggested to purchase a prepaid Bitel SIM card and purchase a data package. This will provide a more reliable internet source.

An unlocked smartphone with SIM card capability is required. Purchase a Bitel prepaid SIM card at the airport or a local store in Lima. Purchase a 30 Peruvian soles (≈$9) refill card and send an SMS to the number 164 with the text “ti30” for a 6GB data package. Most smartphones can be used as WiFi routers, this allows delegates to connect their computers. This cellphone prepaid plan also comes with unlimited calls to the US, Canada and China.

General Information

Peru

Peru is a country in western South America. It is bordered in the north by Ecuador and Colombia, in the east by Brazil, in the southeast by Bolivia, in the south by Chile, and in the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Peru is a megadiverse country with habitats ranging from the arid plains of the Pacific coastal region in the west to the peaks of the Andes mountains vertically extending from the north to the southeast of the country to the tropical Amazon Basin rainforest in the east with the Amazon river.

The sovereign state of Peru is a representative democratic republic divided into 25 regions. It is classified as an emerging market with a high level of human development and an upper middle-income level with a poverty rate around 19 percent. It is one of the region's most prosperous economies with an average growth rate of 5.9% and it has one of the world's fastest industrial growth rates at an average of 9.6%. Its main economic activities include mining, manufacturing, agriculture and fishing; along with other growing sectors such as telecommunications and biotechnology.

Peru has a population of 32 million, which includes Amerindians, Europeans, Africans and Asians. The main spoken language is Spanish, although a significant number of Peruvians speak Quechua or other native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music.

Sauce

The Peruvian district of Sauce is one of the fourteen districts of the Province of San Martin in the Department of San Martin, belonging to the San Martin Region in Peru.

It is the home of around 15000 people and is located in the foothills of the eastern mountain range, the capital is located at 614 meters above sea level and 51 km south of the city of Tarapoto, crossing the Huallaga River.

The Blue Lake is a body of water of mastic type, of tectonic subsidence, with an extension of 430 ha.

Language

Peru is a multilingual nation. Its official language is Spanish. In the zones in which they are predominant, Quechua, Aymara and other aboriginal languages also have co-official status. In addition to Spanish, Quechua and Aymara, there are many Amazonian languages such as Urarina, Aguaruna and Peruvian Sign Language.

Weather

Despite its location in the tropics and in a desert, Lima's proximity to the cool waters of the Pacific Ocean leads to temperatures much lower than those expected for a tropical desert and thus Lima can be classified as a desert climate with subtropical temperature ranges. Temperatures in May rarely fall below 15 °C (54 °F) or rise above 24 °C (84 °F).

In the time we are in Sauce, temperatures can range between 20° C and 30°. Hotel rooms are equipped with air conditioning. It is suggested to bring light business casual clothing.

Time Zone

Peru has only one time zone throughout the country: UTC -5 hours

Electricity & Water Supply

The supply voltage in Peru is 220 volts at 60 hertz (in the USA, electricity is supplied at between 110 and 120 volts). Before you plug in any appliance that you've brought from home, make sure it can handle it.

Tap water in Peru is not safe to drink. Delegates are encouraged to buy water bottles to prevent any inconveniences.
