TRANSCRIPT

We have decided that the main feature of our music video is going to be focused on a girl going through a breakup. We will have flashbacks of her and the boy together and then some close up shots to show her emotions. The use of photographs will play a strong role to show the previous relationship between the two individuals, whilst defacing them will help portray the pain she is going through inside.

Synopsis

For our music video we have decided that we would like our actress to look around the age of 19 years old. We thought using an older person would make it easier for the audience to connect with the video and sympathise for her. We also wanted someone with brown hair as in our example videos we studied they all have brown hair. These are all explained further down in our ‘influences’ section. Another aspect that we considered was that they were not too pale, simply because they would be wearing a white dress and it would wash them out. We wanted someone who is happy to have make-up done, but doesn’t need too much on so they look ‘fake’. As we are going to be using a lot of close up shots we decided that make-up has to be a strong part and will play an important role in portraying feelings. Whilst knowing these characteristics we were looking for, we thought it would be best to recruit an actress. This was because our age group at school is 16-18 and we needed someone slightly older looking. Due to wanting to film and edit in free periods of sixth form this changed our decision greatly as we needed someone who would be able to help us as soon as we needed them without much notice. This led to us asking our friend, Emily Barrett- 17 years of age. We think by using her we can make her look slightly older with the use of makeup and she fitted all the other features perfectly. As for the male, we have decided to use Joe Durrant as they are in a relationship so revealing emotion should be easier.

Characters

There are a number of locations we will need to film this music video. Therefore there will be no main setting. This is because we are going to have a collection of memories which are all going to be set at different places to portray the different times they have had together. During the shoots for the photographs there will be normal household scenes being shown whilst during the reminiscing scenes there may be various sites. Some of our examples include walking in a field or down a road. We do not have an exact location where we want to film however we are still looking around.

Setting

Our genre, being pop has many conventions, the first being lyrics portraying love or breakups. They always have a boy and a girl and when the girl is the artist they focus on the girl and what she is going through. They also mainly wear a white dress, to represent simplicity, purity and vulnerability.

Codes and Conventions

We had a look at some example music videos and found some that were beneficial to us. We looked at music videos from artists such as Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne. They all followed the codes and conventions that we mentioned above, which is how we have decided on a lot of our features.

Our Influences

• Love• Hate• Relationships• Break-up

Themes

By having the artist as the main focus in our music video it allows us to promote them, as how they would want their audience to view them. There will be a lot of close up shots to portray emotion, allowing a direct link with the viewer. The boy will not be a main focus, just a side character to flash back to as he is not the person we are trying to represent.

Star Identity – Representation of Artist

We have done a lot of research into the male gaze, which has been posted below. This portrays the artist as a vulnerable figure, allowing them to be taken advantage of. It also shows how females are viewed by males, other females and themselves. We have taken this into consideration for our video and although we are not planning on making sexual references in our video, she will still be portrayed as vulnerable.

Theory

Within our video, props are going to be vital to get our point across to the audience. Our main prop we were thinking of using was photographs of the couple previously as a form of flashback, to show the connection between both of them. We were also thinking of using a phone to show previous text messages.

Props

The main aim of the editing is to make sure we edit to the beat of the music. To a certain extent we will be using continuity editing however we will be having flashbacks which break this.

Editing

Shot Types

The majority of our shot types are going to be close-ups and mid shots as it is easier to convey a sense of emotion by using direct contact with the audience. Strong facial expressions and using hands on her head helps show her pain she is going through. In Miley Cyrus ‘Wrecking Ball’ she uses many of these shots, which is where a lot of our inspiration has come from. The blank backgrounds also help the audience only focus on her rather than what else is going on around her, especially if the background has a lot of focus within it.
