Lone Star College-CyFair Branch LIBRARY TEEN ROOM RENOVATIONS

INCLUDING LSC-CF STUDENT ART WORK, JANUARY 2015

The Lone Star College CyFair Library Teen Room has been undergoing a complete renovation and

transformation. Our goal is to provide a more attractive and comfortable place for teens in the library.

This fall the blinds were removed to reveal the big window and outside cactus garden. All the book

shelves were taken down and the audio and nonfiction volumes were placed outside the room, the

nonfiction filed among the adult nonfiction collection.

The walls have been painted a light celery green color and all new furniture, including eight new desktop

computers and chairs, have been purchased and for the most part installed. There are two long bar type

tables along the walls with four desktop computers on each side. There is also plenty of room on these

tables for personal laptops and doing homework. The computers are from Harris County Public Library

System. Just like the seven desktops outside the Teen Room, the new ones inside the room are for one

hour usage. Login requires either an activated Harris County Public or LSCS library card number and 4

digit pin or temporary pass received from librarians at the Reference Desk. The new computers inside

the Teen Room are reserved for teens only from 4pm till closing on weekdays and all day Saturday and

Sunday.

Plush comfortable fabric chairs and matching wood coffee tables are next to the window. In the center

of the room there will be a large table and chairs for group projects, activities or study.

Six new paintings have just been purchased by the library from our very talented Lone Star College-

CyFair art students. The paintings were all part of the 2014 Fall Student Art Exhibition in the Bosque

Gallery, http://www.lonestar.edu/news/24192.htm. These paintings will be hung above the desktop

computers.

The student artists, all in Professor Laura Fisher’s Painting II courses, and their work purchased for the

Teen Room are:

Sandra Haubein: Best of Show for “Waves at Sea” Diptych, acrylic

A professional graphic designer, Sandra has been taking painting and a few photography classes at LSC-

CF since 2005. She says that her painting classes enabled her to learn and define her technique. Her

painting “Waves at Sea” that the LSC-CF Library acquired was inspired by the power of the Atlantic

Ocean that she observed during her family’s vacation last summer at the beach on Bald Head Island,

North Carolina.

Al Nash: First Place Painting for “Family,” mixed media on canvas; “Expressions,” acrylic and oil;

“Vacquera,” acrylic on wood; “La Vida,” acrylic, oil, holographic crystals on wood

Al has been taking primarily painting classes at LSC-CF since 2012, although he’s been painting since

childhood. In addition to exhibiting many pieces in the 2014 Fall Student Art Exhibition, he has an

upcoming solo show “American Icons” in the LSC-CF Bosque Gallery the end of January 2015.

Teen book clubs, free tutoring and other activities have already been taking place in the Teen Room.

Although the room is not reservable by the public, we encourage the teens to use the room and feel at

home in a space created just for them in the library. Renovations will be completed in the spring.
