Becarefull • Acrylic on wood • 100 x 100 cm - 39.4 x 39.4 in.

Born in Paris in 1961.Lives and works in Paris.

He was one of the pioneers of the French “Street art” movement alongside others like Jérôme Mesnager, Miss Tic…By imposing a powerful, innovative style in the early 80s, Speedy has left his mark on the collective memory of a whole generation. And he hasn’t stopped evolving since, always in step with his times, by inventing pictorial languages and codes that are iconoclastic and satirical of our society. His art is part of life itself. His canvasses recount his own story, his encounters, his questioning of a world that he invents for himself as he constructs it. His style telescopes graphic universes drawn from popular culture. His work has today become a reference. He is generally looked on as an icon, and his influence on the new generations of artists and current cultural landscape is no longer in doubt. He takes part in a great many events, like Jean-Michel Jarre’s concert at la Défense, the graphic identity of the Halle Saint Pierre, and the logo for the Altair space mission. His works are to be found in private and public collections, and are present in France, Belgium, Los Angeles - USA, and Dubai, among others.

Gabriel Anastassios is a French painter of Greek origins. He was born in Lille, in France in 1952. In 1972, he entered the ENSAD, National School of Decorative Arts in Paris and studied oil works in the Georges Rohner workshop. In 1977, he started to work on his own in the South of France in Ramatuelle and traveled to Venice, Italy. From 1978 to 1983, he settled down and worked in Paris under the mentorship of two patrons. In 1983, he went to Africa and visited the Yoruba ethnic group. Between 1984 and 1987, he participated in various exhibitions of art both in France and overseas. He then traveled to Nigeria in Africa. From 1993-1998, he contributed to the elaboration of a movie for the SNECMA. He took up apprenticeship in 3D art imagery and ventured into art video, than traveled to New York and Egypt as well.Back to Paris in 2000, he followed his pictorial and geometrical works. In the same period, he began to exhibit at Opera Gallery the “Metaxu” series (from the Greek concept, referring to bridges, mediators, the “between”) and the metamorphoses works. His interest in symbolism and esotericism has led him progressively to create an ensemble of recurring figures. After having worked on the theme of metamorphosis, he discovered the depths of the aesthetic of the “drape” and started to thus “cover” his subjects – heart shapes, guns and currency symbols in the present exhibition at Opera Gallery London – in a systematic manner.

Gabriel Anastassios body of work is a work of the imagination and of the imaginary. He transforms things and beings and by means of their illusion and the depth of his thinking, he has safeguarded the essential: the poetry of life. His works are to be found in private and public collections on various continents.

Artist’s statementTo drape is to cover up a form with a cloth. To paint is to cover a canvas with paint. It is creating a shape by means of folds. Each shape holds its own arrangement of folds.A very same shape can undergo an infinity of arrangements.

The fold embraces the shape, caresses it, draws it.The light moulds the fold, and thus the shape. The fold here becomes a line of light.

The fold, in this concealing and revealing process, discloses the evocative power of the archetypal figures and the strength of the Logo.
