    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank tlast years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners a

supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learni

and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meetithe needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and loo

forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looki

forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken

this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teacheare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and pl

the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positi

challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holist

    needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of t

opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us this path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

The Society of Apothecaries of London:Trade in drugs and spices was lucrative in the Middle Ages. In theBritish Isles, it was monopolized by the Guild of Grocers, whichhad jurisdiction over the apothecaries. After years of effort, theapothecaries found allies among court physicians. King James I,flanked by two "Beefeaters" wore heavily padded attire because offear of stabbing. Upon persuasion by the philosopher-politician,Francis Bacon, the King granted a charter in 1617 which formed aseparate company known as the "Master, Wardens and Society ofthe Art and Mystery of the Apothecaries of the City of London"over vigorous protests of the grocers. This was the firstorganization of pharmacists in the Anglo-Saxon world.NEWS UPDATE

Ebola Vaccine DevelopedAn experimental vaccine to prevent Ebola virus disease was well-tolerated and produced immune system responses in all 20 healthyadults who received it in a Phase 1 clinical trial conducted byresearchers from the National Institutes of Health. The candidatevaccine, which was co-developed by the NIH's National Institute

of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and GlaxoSmithKline(GSK), was tested at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda,Maryland. The interim results are reported online in advance ofprint in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"The unprecedented scale of the current Ebola outbreak in WestAfrica has intensified efforts to develop safe and effective vaccines, which may play a role in bringing this epidemic to an end andundoubtedly will be critically important in preventing future large

outbreaks," said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. "Based onthese positive results from the first human trial of this candidatevaccine, we are continuing our accelerated plan for larger trials todetermine if the vaccine is efficacious in preventing Ebolainfection."The candidate NIAID/GSK Ebola vaccine was developedcollaboratively by scientists at the NIAID Vaccine Research Center(VRC) and at Okairos, a biotechnology company acquired by GSK.

It contains segments of Ebola virus genetic material from two virusspecies, Sudan and Zaire. The Ebola virus genetic material isdelivered by a carrier virus (chimpanzee-derived adenovirus 3 orcAd 3) that causes a common cold in chimpanzees but causes noillness in humans. The candidate vaccine does not contain Ebolavirus and cannot cause Ebola virus disease. The trial enrolled volunteers between the ages of 18 and 50. Tenvolunteers received an intramuscular injection of vaccine at alower dose and 10 received the same vaccine at a higher dose. At

two weeks and four weeks following vaccination, the researcherstested the volunteers' blood to determine if anti-Ebola antibodieswere generated. All 20 volunteers developed such antibodieswithin four weeks of receiving the vaccine. Antibody levels werehigher in those who received the higher dose vaccine. The investigators also analyzed the research participants' blood tolearn whether the vaccine prompted production of immune systemcells called T cells. A recent study by VRC scientist Nancy J.

Sullivan, Ph.D., and colleagues showed that non-human primatesinoculated with the candidate NIAID/GSK vaccine developed bothantibody and T-cell responses, and that these were sufficient toprotect vaccinated animals from disease when they were laterexposed to high levels of Ebola virus.

The experimental NIAID/GSK vaccine did induce a T-cell responsein many of the volunteers, including production of CD8 T cells, which may be an important part of immune protection againstEbola viruses. Four weeks after vaccination, CD8 T cells were

detected in two volunteers who had received the lower dosevaccine and in seven of those who had received the higher dose."We know from previous studies in non-human primates that CD8T cells played a crucial role in protecting animals that had beenvaccinated with this NIAID/GSK vaccine and then exposed tootherwise lethal amounts of Ebola virus," said Julie E. Ledgerwood,D.O., a VRC researcher and the trial's principal investigator. "Thesize and quality of the CD8 T cell response we saw in this trial are

similar to that observed in non-human primates vaccinated withthe candidate vaccine."There were no serious adverse effects observed in any of thevolunteers, although two people who received the higher dosevaccine did develop a briefly lasting fever within a day ofvaccination.
