    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    Andreas Vesalius

    1514 1564

Andreas Vesalius founded modern anatomy. His remarkable 1543book De humini corporus fabricawas a fully illustrated anatomy of thehuman body. Based on observations he had made during dissections, the book overthrew misconceptions in anatomy that had persistedfor over a thousand years.

Vesalius was an anatomy professor at the University of Padua and aphysician to Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V.

    Beginnings

Andreas Vesalius was born on December 31, 1514 in the city ofBrussels. The city was then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Today itis the capital of Belgium. Vesalius was one of four children he hadtwo brothers and a sister.

His father, Andries van Wesele, was personal pharmacist to thecourt of Margaret of Austria. His mother, Isabel Crabbe, raised herchildren in a prosperous home situated in a respectableneighborhood near the Coudenberg Palace, convenient for Andries

van Weseles work.Vesalius started school aged six, possibly attending the CatholicBrothers of Common Life School in Brussels for nine years. There hewould have learned arithmetic, Latin, and other languages, and hewould have been given a thorough grounding in the tenets of thecatholic religion. His father was often absent on imperial business

and, encouraged by his mother to follow in his fathers footsteps, theyoung Vesalius made full use of his familys well-stocked library.

    Vesalius the Royal Physician

Having brought himself to the notice of the emperor, Vesalius wasappointed as physician to the imperial household. He resigned fromhis professorship in Padua, becoming the fifth generation of theWesele/Vesalius family to be in imperial service.

As an imperial physician, he was expected to serve the imperial army. When war broke out he was sent to the battlefield as a surgeon.Accustomed to dissecting dead bodies, at first he struggled to copewith operating on living patients. An experienced surgeon by the

name of Daza Chacon helped him learn how to perform amputationsquickly.

In the winter of 1543 Vesalius returned to Italy to perform anatomydemonstrations and then returned to military service in spring 1544.He became a fine surgeon.

One of his imperial duties was to embalm the bodies of wealthynoblemen who died in battle. Doing so enabled him to carry out more

anatomical research, making notes and observations.Peace was declared in mid-1544 and Vesalius then returned to caringfor the emperor and his court in more comfortable surroundings.

Vesalius reputation continued to grow, to the extent that hereceived mail from physicians all over Europe asking for his advice intheir most baffling cases.

In 1556 Emperor Charles V handed power over to his son, Philip.

Grateful to Vesalius, who was now 41, for his loyal service, Charlesgranted his physician a lifelong pension and gave him the aristocratictitle of Count Palentine.

Vesalius continued working, now in the service of Philip rather thanCharles.

Some Personal Details and the End

In 1544 Vesalius had married Anne Van Hamme. She was thedaughter of a wealthy counsellor of Brussels. They had one child, adaughter, born in 1545. They named her Anne.

The family stayed together most of the time, but when Vesalius setout on his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, his wife and daughter returned toBrussels.

Vesalius reached Jerusalem, where he received a letter from Paduainviting him to accept the chair of anatomy and surgery.Unfortunately, Vesalius would never return to Padua.

His return trip from Jerusalem was marred by violent storms. By thetime the ship reached port at the Greek island of Zakynthos, Vesaliuswas desperately ill. He died within a few days.

Andreas Vesalius died aged 49 on October 15, 1564. He was buried onZakynthos.

consumers. This effort was part of Operation Pangea IX, the NinthAnnual International Internet Week of Action (IIWA), a globalcooperative effort, led by INTERPOL, to combat the unlawful saleand distribution of illegal and potentially counterfeit medical

    products on the internet.

Preventing illegal internet sales of dangerous unapproved drugs iscritical to protecting consumers health, said George Karavetsos, director of the FDAs Office of Criminal Investigations. OperationPangea IX demonstrates the FDAs continuing commitment to standunited with our international partners to protect consumers in theUnited States and throughout the world from criminals who putprofit above the health and safety of consumers.

The goal of Operation Pangea IX was to identify the makers anddistributors of illegal prescription drug products and to remove theseproducts from the supply chain.

The FDAs Office of Criminal Investigations, Office of RegulatoryAffairs, and Center for Drug Evaluation and Research participated inthe enforcement action, which ran from May 31 to June 7, 2016. TheFDA conducted extensive inspections at International Mail Facilities

(IMFs) in coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and sent formal complaints to domain registrars requesting thesuspension of the 4,402 websites. Included are 110 websites that sellthe chemical 2,4-Dinitrophenol (DNP) as a weight-lossproduct. DNP is most often used as a dye, wood preserver, andherbicide and has never been approved by the FDA for use as a drug.

A recent FDA task force investigation into the distribution of DNPresulted in a May 9, 2016guilty plea from Adam Alden of Bakersfield,California, for introducing an unapproved drug into interstatecommerce. A Rhode Island customer who purchased DNP via theinternet from Alden, among other sources, died in October 2013 as aresult of DNP ingestion.

During the IIWA, the FDA, in addition to requesting the suspensionof 4,402 websites, issued warning letters to the operators of 53websites illegally offering unapproved and misbranded prescriptiondrug products for sale to U.S. consumers. FDA inspectors, in

collaboration with other federal agencies, screened and seized illegaldrug products received through IMFs in San Francisco, Chicago, andNew York. These screenings resulted in the detention of 797 parcelswhich, if found in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and CosmeticAct, will be refused entry into the country and destroyed.

Preliminary findings from drug products screened at the IMFs showthat U.S. consumers had purchased certain unapproved drugproducts from abroad to treat depression, narcolepsy, highcholesterol, glaucoma, and asthma, among other diseases. Consumersshould be cautious when buying prescription drugs online. In addition to health risks, illegal online pharmacies pose other risksto consumers, including credit card fraud, identity theft and

computer viruses. The FDA encourages consumers to reportsuspected criminal activity atwww.fda.gov/oci.

The IIWA is a collaborative effort between the FDA, the U.S.Department of Homeland Security, National Intellectual PropertyRights Coordination Center, INTERPOL, the World CustomsOrganization, the Permanent Forum of International PharmaceuticalCrime, Heads of Medicines Agencies Working Group ofEnforcement Officers, the pharmaceutical industry and national

health and law enforcement agencies from 115 participatingcountries.
