    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on this path.

    My best wishes to all.

    Dr. A. Sengupta

    EDITORIAL BOARD

CHIEF EDITOR DR. ABHIJIT SENGUPTA EDITOR MS. JEENATARA BEGUM ASSOCIATE EDITOR MR. DIPANJAN MANDAL

    HISTORICAL ARTICLEStephanie Kwolek (1923 2014)

Stephanie Kwolek was an organic chemist, best known for inventing Kevlar in 1965. Kevlar is an immensely strong plastic, which was first used as a replacement for steel reinforcing strips in racing car tires and has gone on to be used in a large number of applications where high strength is required without high weight. Stephanie Louise Kwolek was born in 1923 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Her father died when she was only 10 years old, but he passed on his interest in science, particularly natural science to his daughter.

Aged 23, Kwolek graduated with a degree in chemistry from Margaret Morrison Carnegie College of Carnegie Mellon University. She was quickly recruited to work as a chemist at Dupont Chemicals in Buffalo, NY. Four years later, she moved to Wilmington, Delaware where she spent the remainder of her career with DuPont.

After nine years of research work, Kwolek made her major breakthrough, discovering Kevlar. Her pathway to discovery began a year earlier, when she began looking for a new, lightweight plastic to be used in car tires. The idea was that lighter tires would allow vehicles to enjoy better fuel economy.

Not only did Kevlar find use in tires, its combination of lightness and strength has seen it used in a large variety of protective clothing applications, such as bulletproof vests, which have saved the lives of countless police officers and other people.

Speaking about her discovery, Stephanie Kwolek, I dont think theres anything like saving someones life to bring you satisfaction and happiness.

Stephanie Kwolek died on June 18, 2014, at the age of 90.

    Awards

Stephanie Louise Kwolek was awarded the National Medal of Technology; the Perkin Medal, which is seen as the highest award in American industrial chemistry; the Chemical Pioneer Award of the American Institute of Chemists; and the Howard N. Potts Medal for Engineering. In 1994, she was admitted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

    Kevlar and its Uses

Today, Kevlar is used in a great number of different ways, including armor, gloves, tires, yacht sails, shoes, ropes and tennis racquet strings.

Kevlar is an example of a type of chemicals called polymers. Polymers are long molecules, which are made by joining smaller molecules together into a chain.

The chemicals on the left are reacted together to form a larger molecule on the right. The larger molecule is Kevlar. The chain within the square brackets is called the repeat unit. The chain can be grown to different lengths, with more or fewer repeat units in the chain depending on the precise reaction conditions. Different reaction conditions allow the manufacture of Kevlar to be fine-tuned depending on its desired end use, resulting in a variety of different Kevlar grades that can be purchased.

In precise chemical terms, 1,4-phenylene-diamine reacts with terephthaloyl chloride in a condensation polymerization producing Kevlar and eliminating hydrogen chloride.

The raw Kevlar polymer is then spun to produce very strong, stiff fibers. When this was first done, Kwolek was astonished when she

discovered, that weight-for-weight, the polymer she had made was five times stronger than steel.

NEWS UPDATE 'Big data' helps to discover key factors driving

blood cell specification: (25th February, 2016) New research has identified key factors that drive blood cell development by recapitulating this process in a culture dish. Cells with the ability to give rise to blood are normally specified in the early embryo over a number of developmental stages and eventually form blood stem cells that are maintained for life and generate trillions of blood cells every day.

Unveiling the maturation mechanism of germline genome guardians: (25th February, 2016)

A research group has identified a Pac-Man-like enzyme called 'Trimmer' involved in the generation of a class of small RNAs, which protect the genome of germ cells from unwanted genetic rewriting.

Proofreading molecules tug on RNA to ensure protein production accuracy: (25th February, 2016)

Scientists have discovered how two enzymes play a critical role in ensuring quality control during splicing. In a new study, they found these molecules most likely apply physical tension to RNA to keep wrong sites from being cut. This action not only prevents splicing errors, it also enables the selection of alternative splicing sites.

Combination therapy may be better than radiotherapy alone to treat aggressive brain cancer: (26th February, 2016) Radiotherapy effectively damages brain tumors but the cancer cells can repair themselves in order to live on. Now, researchers have tested a strategy that combines radiotherapy with a drug that shuts down the ability of tumor to mend themselves.

Researchers find association between oral bacteria and esophageal cancer: (26th February, 2016) Researchers have found a bacterial species responsible for gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis, is present in 61 percent of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Determining the structures of nanocrystalline pharmaceuticals by electron diffraction: (26th February, 2016) Reliable information about the structure of pharmaceutical compounds is important for patient safety, for the development of related drugs and for patenting purposes. However, working out the structures of pharmaceuticals can be tough.

KNOWLEDGE BASED ARTICLE Immune cell 'switch' discovery raises hopes in

cancer fight A team led by Dr Nick Huntington, from the institute's Molecular Immunology division, has found for the first time how the 'switch' that turns on these natural killer cells works.

The team found that the switch, a protein called ID2, works by allowing natural killer cells to become responsive to growth factors in the blood.

Dr Huntington said a growth factor called IL-15 keeps natural killer cells active and alive -- if it is taken away these cells die.

"This is an exciting discovery because previous research has shown that these natural killer cells are really potent in killing tumours: breast and colon cancer and melanoma cells," Dr Huntington said.

"We knew this switch -- or master regulator -- was essential for the natural killer cell development but we had no idea how this worked."

Dr Huntington said the research allowed scientists to think of new strategies to regulate the activity of natural killer cells by targeting the switch and could lead to new treatments.

"If we can give an advantage to natural killer cells by boosting their activity or numbers or survival in the body then we can try to win that fight against cancer," he said.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and illness in Australia.

Natural killer cells, a type of white blood cell prevalent in the body, deliver lethal toxic granules into cells that have become cancerous or infected, causing them to explode.

Dr Huntington said the switch that controls them could also be manipulated to fight viral infections or to help patients whose immune systems have not developed properly because their bodies lack natural killer cells.

"We've basically identified how natural killer cells are born and how they're maintained in our body," Dr Huntington said. "Now we know how to best keep them fit and healthy to keep us healthy," he said.

"The real paradigm shift is that we can now make natural killer cells appear even when this switch is missing, purely by supplying more growth factor to the specific environment -- we can push cells to become natural killer cells. It's a really novel biological discovery."

Dr Huntington said the findings, made with Dr Sebastian Carotta and Dr Gabrielle Belz and to be published in the January edition of the leading Immunology journal Immunity, marked the first time scientists could overcome immune deficiencies in cells that are missing the switch by 'tricking' the cells into becoming natural killer cells using growth factor.

Conversely, the natural killer cell switch could potentially be turned off in instances in which these cells proved damaging, such as when they prompt the rejection of donor stem cells in bone marrow transplants or produce signals that result in the potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome.

The current research was funded by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council, The Menzies Foundation and the Victorian Government Operational Infrastructure Support Scheme.
