    MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

" It can happen. It does happen. But it can't happen if you quit ." Lauren Dane.

‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit .’ Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank thelast year’s editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academicexcellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners aresupported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learningand instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meetingthe needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order toachieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and lookforward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is lookingforward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken inthis direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachersare committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and playthe role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positivechallenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holisticneeds of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of theopportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us onthis path.

    My best wishes to all.

    HISTORICAL ARTICLE

    Emmy Noether1882 – 1935

Emmy Noether is probably the greatest female mathematician whohas ever lived. She transformed our understanding of the universewith Noether’s theorem and then transformed mathematics with herfounding work in abstract algebra.

    Beginnings

Amalie Emmy Noether was born in the small university city ofErlangen in Germany on March 23, 1882. Her father, Max Noether, was an eminent professor of mathematics at the University ofErlangen. Her mother was Ida Amalia Kaufmann, whose family were

wealthy wholesalers.Young Emmy was brought up as a typical girl of her era: helping withcooking and running the house – she admitted later that she hadlittle aptitude for these sorts of things. Her mother was a skilledpianist, but Emmy did not enjoy piano lessons. Her main passion wasdancing.

She also loved mathematics, but she knew that the rules of the time

meant she would not be allowed to follow in her father’s footsteps tobecome a university academic.

After completing high school – she attended the Municipal Schoolfor Higher Education of Daughters in Erlangen – she trained tobecome a school teacher, qualifying in 1900, aged 18, to teach Englishand French in girls’ schools.

Although a career in teaching offered her financial security, her loveof mathematics proved to be too strong. She decided to abandonteaching and apply to the University of Erlangen to observemathematics lectures there. She could only observe lectures, becausewomen were not permitted to enroll officially at the university.Between 1900 and 1902 Emmy studied mathematics at Erlangen. In July 1903 she traveled to the city of Nürnberg and passed thematriculation examination allowing her to study mathematics (butnot officially enroll) at any German university.

    Noether’s Theorem

Hilbert, Einstein, Noether, and the General Theory of Relativity

    Einstein visits Göttingen

In 1915 Albert Einstein had been struggling to formulate his GeneralTheory of Relativity mathematically. He visited David Hilbert inGöttingen and discussed the issues. The result was that Einsteinovercame his issues and published his theory before the year end.Hilbert published his own version of the theory, in a differentmathematical form.

Einstein’s General Relativity Breaks the LawHilbert now discussed one particular problem with Noether. He wasdeeply concerned that, despite its attractions, Relativity Theory wasbreaking one of the ‘unbreakable’ conservation laws of physics. Hebelieved that her expertise in invariant theory could be helpful.

Certain quantities in physics may not be created or destroyed, suchas energy. Energy can change its form – such as kinetic to thermal –

but the total energy stays constant – energy is said to be conserved. In General Relativity Theory however, there was a problem: it waspossible for an object which lost energy by emitting gravity waves tospeed up. An object with less energy should slow down, not speedup! It seemed that the conservation of energy law was being broken.

A Problem Archimedes Would Have Loved

In the end, the problem was one of symmetry. Over 2000 years earlierthe greatest mathematician of antiquity – perhaps ever – had been

buried with a carving of a sphere within a cylinder on his tomb. Thiswas Archimedes, who believed his greatest achievement had beendiscovering and proving the formula for the volume of a sphere.

A perfect sphere is highly symmetrical. Whichever way you rotate it,and from whichever angle you view it, it always looks the same. Acylinder, on the other hand, is less symmetrical; but there is stillsome symmetry. If you turn it upside down, for example, it looks thesame.

Physicists need to use equations whose symmetry is as sphere-like aspossible. They last thing they want is equations that changedepending on where you are viewing the universe from. In physics jargon we say that we need the laws of the universe to be spaceinvariant . We don’t want them to look different in one city fromanother or in one galaxy from another.

We also need these laws to be time invariant. We don’t want thelaws of physics in an hour’s time to be different from the laws rightnow.

    Noether to the Rescue

Noether hit the ground running in Göttingen. In the year she arrivedshe proved something remarkable – something so beautiful andprofound that it changed the face of physics forever –Noether’sTheorem, which she eventually published in 1918.

Her famous theorem was born when Noether considered Hilbert andEinstein’s problem: that General Relativity Theory seemed to breakthe law of conservation of energy.

Noether discovered that for every invariant (i.e. symmetry) in theuniverse there is a conservation law. Equally, for every conservation

law in physics, there is an invariant. This is calledNoether’sTheorem and it describes a fundamental property of our universe.

For example, Noether’s Theorem shows that the law of conservation

of energy is actually a consequence of time invariance in classicalphysics. Or alternatively that time invariance is caused by the law ofconservation of energy.

Another example is that the law of conservation of electric charge isa consequence of the global gauge invariance of the electromagneticfield. And vice versa.

    Opening up Strange New Worlds

With Noether’s Theorem, physicists now owned a very powerfulnew concept. They could propose abstract symmetries, knowingthere must be a conservation law attached to each of them. Theycould then figure out the conservation law.

Noether’s Theorem has the power to answer questions others cannot– particularly in particle physics. It is important on two levels:

    • it allows practical calculations to be made, and •

when physicists theorize about any new system they can imagine,Noether’s theorem allows them to gain an insight into theproperties of that system and determine if that system is possibleor should be discarded.

Einstein’s Problem SolvedNoether’s Theorem also solved the worrying puzzle in GeneralRelativity that Emmy Noether had initially set out to solve. Hertheorem shows that if matter and gravity are considered to be one

unified quantity rather than separate quantities, then there is noviolation of any conservation law.

    At last: some career progress

With the end of World War 1, in which so many men had died orbeen badly injured, came a change in German society. It became

acceptable for women to work in occupations previously reserved formen. Combined with Noether publishing her brilliant theorem, heracademic progress could no longer be blocked.

At the age of 37 she became a tenured lecturer at Göttingen. However, she still received no pay from a now war-impoverishedGermany. Her father died when she was 39, leaving her a smallinheritance.

It was only when she reached the age of 40 that Noether finallybegan to receive a salary.

Some Personal Details and The End

Noether was totally devoted to mathematics and talked of little else. She never married and had no children. She cared little for herappearance and less for social conventions; she was not a shrinkingviolet – she spoke loudly and forcibly. She could be very blunt whenshe disagreed with anyone on a mathematical issue, and people withwhom she disagreed could feel rather bruised mentally.

On the other hand, she was very kind, considerate, and unselfishwith everyone, and would go out of her way to ensure her Ph.D.

students got full credit for their work, even when she hadcontributed significantly to it herself.

Only students who were very bright and fully prepared benefitedfrom her rather disorganized lectures – rather like Willard Gibbs‘sstudents.

To her advanced students, she would present ideas at the forefront ofmodern mathematics – concepts that she herself was currentlyworking on. This was of great benefit to her best students, who wereable to publish research papers based on new, entirely original ideasNoether had been discussing in her lectures. Her best lessons weredelivered informally, in conversations, or when out walking with herstudents, for whom she always had time.

    • Repeated injury or usage (such as from typing, playing the piano, orheavy use of hand tools)

    • Smoking• Frostbite• Thoracic outlet syndrome

SymptomsExposure to the cold or strong emotions bring on the changes.

    • First, the fingers, toes, ears, or nose become white, and then turnblue.

    • When blood flow returns, the area becomes red and then laterreturns to normal color.

    • The attacks may last from minutes to hours.

People with primary Raynaud phenomenon have problems in thesame fingers on both sides. Most people do not have much pain.

People with secondary Raynaud phenomenon are more likely to havepain or tingling in the fingers. The pain is rarely severe. However, painful ulcers may form on the affected fingers if the attacks are verybad.

Exams and TestsTests that may be done to confirm the diagnosis include:

    • Examination of the blood vessels in the fingertips using a special lenscalled nailfold capillary microscopy

    • Vascular ultrasound • Blood tests to look for arthritic and autoimmune conditions that may

    cause Raynaud phenomenon

TreatmentTaking these steps may help control Raynaud phenomenon:

    • Keep the body warm. Avoid exposure to cold in any form. Wearmittens or gloves outdoors and when handling ice or frozen food.Avoid getting chilled, which may happen after any active recreationalsport.

    • Stop smoking. Smoking causes blood vessels to narrow even more.• Avoid caffeine.• Avoid taking medicines that cause blood vessels to tighten or spasm.

Wear comfortable, roomy shoes and wool socks. When outside, always wear shoes.

Your provider may prescribe medicines to relax the walls of theblood vessels. These include topical nitroglycerin cream that you rubon your skin, calcium channel blockers, sildenafil (Viagra), and ACEinhibitors.

It is vital to treat the condition causing Raynaud phenomenon.
